The Daily Buzz For Jan 16

Janelle Monáe Takes One Giant Leap for GQ Magazine
(GQ) Janelle Monáe’s music was already out of this world. But now, after taking one small step into Hollywood with a role in Oscar favorite Moonlight, she’s taken the next big jump forward with Hidden Figures, playing a bold Space Age pioneer.
Not much about Janelle Monáe says “Homo sapiens.” The tailored intergalactic-butler uniform. The massive voice in the maybe-five-foot frame. Even her skin looks airbrushed. So it isn't surprising that when asked how old she is, she replies, “I'm timeless.” Maybe she's an android. “I look at androids as the future Other,” she says, her empathy for the marginalized extending to A.I. “I feel a responsibility to speak out for the Other.” In her new film, Hidden Figures, about a different kind of Other—badass black women working for NASA in the 1960s—Monáe actually plays a computer. (NASA called its mathematicians “computers.”)
Her character doesn't take shit. Neither does Monáe. “I want to redefine what it means to be young, black, wild, and free in America,” she says. It's jarring to see someone so in control of her image submit herself to the demands of a studio and director. But Monáe doesn't flinch at temporarily shelving monochromatic space diva for important movies like the awards-season hit Moonlight. Of course, she also has bigger ideas: “I want to see more black people. Not just in films like Moonlight. Big-budget films, too.” And since the life span of an android is probably, like, 500 years, Monáe will have plenty of time to give the Hollywood muckety-mucks a run for their money.

#R.H.o.A: Kandi Burruss Hits Back At Phaedra Parks; Shares Thoughts On Johnnie Mess
Clearly there is no love lost between Kandi Burruss and Phaedra Parks. The Real Housewives of Atlanta co-stars and former besties haven’t been exactly tip-toeing around their true feelings for one another this season and Kandi‘s new blog confirms that. She addresses the Johnnie situation/lawsuit and blasts Phaedra.

On Johnnie‘s Instagram slam, Kandi confesses she was floored he was referring to her. “I was wondering who he was talking about, because there were a lot of people in the picture, other friends of ours. I was really baffled, because we had just paid his event company to do our convention and as far as I knew we were on good terms.”
On confronting Johnnie about the public dig, “Why did he all of a sudden have a problem with me seven months after he no longer was a part of the team? He let it be known that he wanted to come back before, but all of a sudden he says I didn’t pay him enough and he haHid a problem with me. I can’t really say too much because this is an ongoing lawsuit, but I just think it’s sad when you try to help a person build their business, support them, refer them jobs, and promote their business so that they can be successful on their own, but then they try to tear you down and discredit you. It really sucks and makes me hesitant about helping anybody else.”
On the shadiness of Johnnie paying a visit to Phaedra Parks, Kandi bristles.  “When has she ever been excited to see somebody from the ‘Kandi Koated Clique’ come around? Clearly she knew he was no longer with us and happy to encourage him to sue me. Her comment about the slave wages was funny to me, because she was the person I talked to when I was first trying to figure out fair payment for different positions… Side bar: I hope you all don’t believe that 80 hours a week mess. Johnnie had his own event planning business that constantly planned events. How was he with us for 80 hours and also at his events building his own business?”

Kandi blasts in her blog, “Also, Phaedra has constantly taken jabs at my husband for the past few years. She said she has never worked with me, but she worked with him and she wouldn’t recommend him… Well, that’s a lie. She has worked with me before. And after my experience with Phaedra, I wouldn’t recommend her either… Let’s not take career jabs, m’am. That would not be a good idea.”

#EMPIRE: Taraji P. Henson Scores Role As A Bada** Hit Woman In ‘Proud Mary’
Since taking over the box office with Hidden Figures this past weekend, Taraji P. Henson has closed a deal to star in the upcoming Screen Gems’ thriller Proud Mary.
According to Variety, the award-winning actress is set to deliver a chilling performance as a hit woman whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a young boy that awakens her maternal instinct. While no director has signed onto the film penned by John Stewart Newman and Christian Swegal as yet, production is slated to begin in April under Paul Schiff and Tai Duncan.

Crowned Best Actress at the BET Awards last year, Henson will make a grand return to the small screen as the fiery Cookie Lyons when Empire resumes in March–and once more when the hip-hop drama delivers additional episodes for the fourth season.

New Music Video from Trey Songz & Fabolous Team Up In “Keys To The Street”
Trey Songz and Fabolous head out to sea on a yacht to uncover life’s greatest keys in the video for “Keys to the Street” off their collaborative mixtape Trappy New Years.
Pouring champagne and drinking mimosas, Trigga and Loso remix YFN Lucci’s Migos and Trouble-assisted banger. With palm trees, a curvaceous friend, and water all around, the Trappy bros celebrate their collaborative effort in style.

Released on New Year’s Eve, Trappy New Years allowed Fab and Trey to trade vocals over trap cuts like Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” and Future’s “Used to This.”
Since then, Trigga has already dropped another project. Earlier this week, he released Anticipation III with his artist MIKExANGEL.

New Hip Hop from Fabolous & Jadakiss Feat. Tory Lanez – ‘Rapture’
Fabolous and Jadakiss have transformed into Freddy vs. Jason.
On Friday the 13th, the frightening duo dropped “Rapture,” the Tory Lanez-assisted single off their long-awaited joint EP, set to arrive this year.

With Tory on the hook, Fab kicks things off over Vinylz and Cam Obi’s hard-hitting production, which samples Anita Baker’s 1986 classic “Caught Up in the Rapture.” “Caught up in the rapture of love,” he raps. “Rock the 7s in Toronto, show the Raptors some love / Take a picture with my ni**as, try to capture the love / We from the bottom, but we trying to adapt to above.”
After his trademark laugh, J to the Muah carries this theme over. “Caught up in the rapture of love,” he rhymes. “From where they shoot it out, slap box, and scrap with the thugs / Went through all different cities on the map with the drugs / Instead of re-ing up, we just came back with the plugs.”

Along with the new track, Freddy and Jason also dropped a fear-inducing trailer for their joint project. It’s a blend of Blair Witch Project, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. Viewers see a young woman running for her life, only to be disappointed, in tears, and haunted by a familiar yet frightening tune.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus Closing After 146 Years
After nearly a century and a half, the Greatest Show on Earth is closing its doors, the Associated Press reports. Kenneth Feld, the chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, which purchased the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1967, told the AP that declining attendance and revenues were to blame, as were high-profile battles with animal-rights activists over the circus’ treatment of animal attractions, particularly elephants.
In a letter on the company website, Feld wrote that ticket sales declined dramatically after the company made the decision to retire their elephants in 2015. The ex-circus elephants were sent to an elephant conservation center in Florida after years of pressure from activists; this decision lost them the support of at least one high-profile jerk:

Feld also blamed declining attention spans, noting that the show’s longest act—a 12-minute tiger routine—was a tough sell to modern children. Ringling Bros. currently has two circuses on tour, “Out of This World” and “Circus Extreme,” which will perform in 30 more locations between now and May. West-coasters will never get the chance to see the Greatest Show on Earth again, but “Out of this World” will be in Brooklyn from Feb. 23 to March 3 and the D.C. area (Richmond, Washington D.C., Fairfax, and Baltimore) between March 23 and April 30.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was created in 1919 when the Ringling Bros. World’s Greatest Shows merged with Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth. Its roots go back to the 1870 creation of “P.T. Barnum’s Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, & Hippodrome.”
Most of the circus’ 500 employees will be out of work; the remaining circus animals will be given to “suitable homes,” according to the AP.  No word yet as to the fate of the company’s various Wheels of Death.

‘Kinky Boots’ star Billy Porter marries ‘soul mate’ Adam Smith
Congrats are in order for Broadway star Billy Porter and his longtime partner Adam Smith.

Draped in Thom Browne and Prada suits, the grooms jumped the broom on Saturday, Jan. 14, in an intimate ceremony consisting of 45 guests in Manhattan — marked with platinum Cartier bands — at a friend’s Chelsea penthouse, People reports. Afterward, the happy couple and their guests reportedly popped bottles of champagne and enjoyed sweet treats from Empire Cakes.
“We’re looking forward to understanding and learning how to share your life with somebody,” Porter, 47, told People ahead of the wedding, on Friday, Jan. 13. “I’m really thrilled to figure out what that means — together, with my soul mate!”

The magical milestone comes just two weeks after the Tony-winning star got down on bended knee during a romantic dinner in London on Dec. 29. In other words, the pair whipped up their big day in less than one month.
“We were discussing, and Billy had actually brought up to me that it’s important for us to get married [Barack] Obama is still President and before January 20,” 35-year-old Smith said of their impromptu union. “So we sat down and figured out when we could make it work before the 20th.”

“This is an extension of our activist side. It’s still important to show the world what our love looks like; it’s important for us to take that stand,” Porter continued of the urgency to wed prior to Donald Trump’s Inauguration. “I think about when I grew up and when I came out in the ’80s: As a black gay man, there were no examples to validate my existence. So I vowed at that age to try to be that for the generations behind me if I had the chance.”
In 2009, the newlyweds found love by way of mutual friends. After dating for one year, they split only to rekindle their flame in 2015. Meanwhile, the grooms shared their disbelief over the nuptials they never saw becoming a reality, coming from two conservative homes.

“We both grew up in households where who we are is labeled an ‘abomination,’” Porter said. “The thought of marriage, there was no context for it — there was no dreaming about it because there was no context to dream; it was unspoken and very clear that the sanctity of marriage was not for us. So to see that come around, to see that tide turned, it still takes my breath away; I’m still trying to find the words to describe it. I didn’t think I needed it. I lived with this idea that it just wasn’t for us. So when we went to get our marriage license the other day, the act of that was so powerful in a way that crept up on the both of us, and it just grounded that moment.

“I finally found — we finally found — the thing that has been so elusive, and I’m so excited to share that.”

Smith added, “To get to marry the person that you love more than anything is an extraordinary thing, and I finally realized what everyone else has been able to do, I now am able to do myself. And that’s an incredible feeling.”

Congrats to the couple on entering a new chapter in their life.

Teen defends woman who kidnapped her from hospital at birth and raised her
Kamiyah Mobley, now 18, has been missing since she was a newborn. Kamiya, who was raised as Alexis Manigo, was snatched from her birth mother Shanara Mobley’s arms at the University Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, in July 1998. The abductor was dressed as a nurse and told Mobley, who was 16 at the time, that Kamiyah had a fever and needed to be examined.
Gloria Williams, 51, was arrested and charged with kidnapping at her home at 5 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, 2017. Williams, a week before the crime, had suffered a miscarriage. She drove to Florida and abducted the 8-hour-old newborn whom she raised in Walterboro, South Carolina, with two of her biological children.
At the time of the kidnapping, the video footage at the hospital was of low quality and there were no photos of Kamiyah to reference. Within the first year, the kidnapping received national attention, appeared on “America’s Most Wanted” and a reward reached up to a quarter of a million dollars. The case went cold after the police investigated over 2,000 leads.

Kamiyah, is obviously devastated, but she’s defending the only mother she’s ever known saying in a Facebook post, “My mother raised me with everything I needed and most of all everything I wanted. My mother is no felon.”
Court records show that Williams has an extensive criminal record. She’s been found guilty of writing fraudulent checks and welfare fraud. She was also charged with a minor crime for disturbing the peace two months after Kamiyah was abducted.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams says Gloria Williams will be extradited back to Florida and is being held without bond.
Kamiyah’s biological father and grandmother, Craig and Velma Aiken, have spoken to her on FaceTime, as did Kamiyah’s mother Shanara, who has since had three more children.
Velma Aiken, 66, said her granddaughter chatted with the family as if they had known each other her whole life.
“She looks just like her daddy,” she tells the Associated Press. “She act[s] like she been talking to us all the time. She told us she’d be here soon to see us. We lost her for 18 years. We don’t want to lose her again.”
Craig Aiken says, “It’s been 18 years. I can’t wait no [sic] longer.” Williams could face up to life in prison if convicted.

Kamiyah’s birth family, father and grandmother, Craig and Velma Aiken, are excited about reuniting with their loved one.
