History is Made as Dean Baquet, becomes The First African American named editor of New York Times
Dean Baquet as been named the executive editor of the New York Times, the paper announced Wednesday, replacing Jill Abramson in an unexpected change.
He will become the first African-American executive editor at what is the nation's highest-profile newspaper. Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. made the surprise announcement to editors and reporters Wednesday afternoon. The company didn't give a reason for the change, according to The Associated Press.
In his announcement, Sulzberger said Abramson's departure was related to "an issue with management in the newsroom," according to Politico, and had nothing to do with the quality of the paper's journalism during her tenure. Abramson was not present for the newsroom announcement, Politico noted.
Baquet is "a consummate journalist whose reputation as a fierce advocate for his reporters and editors is well-deserved," Sulzberger said in a memo. "And importantly, he is an enthusiastic supporter of our push toward further creativity in how we approach the digital expression of our journalism."
Baquet, 57, began his newspaper career in New Orleans at the The States-Item and later worked for the The Times-Picayune.
He had been the managing editor for news at the New York Times, replacing Abramson in that role in September 2011.
As a reporter at the Chicago Tribune, Baquet won a the Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism in 1988 for coverage of corruption at the Chicago City Council. He also served as editor of the Los Angeles Times.
Baquet made national headlines when he landed the Los Angeles position as the first African-American editor of a major newspaper. But he resigned the job a short time after when he and and the then-publisher of the paper refused to make job cuts.
Abramson, 60, was The New York Times' first female executive editor. She joined the newspaper in 1997 and was managing editor for eight years before she took the top editing position.

Black AIDS Groups Says Magic Johnson is A Role Model
Group Says Magic Johnson is a Role Model in the HIV/AIDS Community
Bishop Carl Bean, founder of the Minority AIDS Project, the first community based HIV/AIDS organization established and managed by people of color in the United States issued the following statement today regarding the repeatedly disparaging comments made about NBA great Magic Johnson’s HIV-positive status by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
“The Magic Johnson Foundation was one of the first donors to the Minority AIDS Project organization when we opened in 1985.
It is because of the philanthropic support of role models like Magic Johnson that 29 years later, we are still in the community of South Los Angeles addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis among African-Americans and Latinos.
While Mr. Sterling is entitled to his opinion, his comments are what feeds into the stigma and fear of people living with HIV and AIDS and keeps those possibly infected with the virus from getting tested and seeking help.
In referencing Magic Johnson, Mr. Sterling asked the question, “Is that someone we want to respect, and tell our kids about?”
Our answer is yes.
Magic Johnson took a courageous and bold step when he publicly disclosed his HIV-positive status at a time when it was unpopular to do so. He single-handedly helped to peel back several layers of shame associated with the virus and gave a voice and a face to the image of HIV and AIDS in America.
From an organization who works in the trenches of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Los Angeles County, Mr. Johnson has earned our respect and gratitude not only for giving back to the community, but for being one of the persons the newly infected could look up to as being HIV-positive and leading a long successful life. Mr. Johnson through his career and charity has proven that HIV and AIDS is not an automatic death sentence and that with the proper healthcare, that starts with getting tested, you could live a long and productive life.
Thank you Magic Johnson.”
About the Minority AIDS Project
Founded in 1985 by Carl Bean and member of the Unity Fellowship Church, the Minority AIDS Project (MAP) is the first community based HIV/AIDS organization established and managed by people of color in the United States.
MAP’s primary focus of services and outreach is the African-American and Latino communities in Central and South Central Los Angeles, who at the time of MAP’s opening, had little or no real access to preventive education and essential health care services.
Today, MAP serves the needs of more than 1,200 clients living with HIV/AIDS per month. MAP also provides prevention services to over 12,000 individuals per year in Los Angeles County.

LeBron Puts NBA on Notice: He will Boycott Next Season if Sterling is Still an Owner
*OK NBA, it’s like this. Your number one star player … your money maker if you will, is laying down the gauntlet. And in case you need help, his name is LeBron James.
It’s real simple. James, along with other players won’t play next season if Donald Sterling still is an NBA owner, according to Roger Mason Jr., vice president of the NBA Players Association.
On the “Jim Rome on Showtime” show this week he said that the players are united in boycotting the league next season if Sterling isn’t removed as Clippers owner. The NBA owners committee met for the third time this week to discuss ousting Sterling.
“If it’s not handled by … the start of next season, I don’t see how we’re playing basketball,” Mason said. “I was just in the locker room with LeBron … At the end of the day, you know we have leaders. We have player reps, we’ve got executive committee members … Leaders of the teams, they’re all saying the same thing, ‘If this man is still in place, we ain’t playing.’”
Rome went on to ask: “So your guy LeBron, you think he would not play if Sterling were still in there when the [next] season started?”
“I was just in the locker room three or four days ago. LeBron and I talked about it,” Mason added. “He ain’t playing if Sterling is still an owner.”
When asked about how players would react if Sterling’s wife is kept on as an owner, Mason said: “There’s no place for that family in the NBA.”
And of course we don’t have to remind you that the two Dodo birds known as Donald and Shelly Sterling have said that they will do everything in thier legal rights to fight being removed as owners, and if either of them sues — or if they both do — what will happen if next season comes around and the Sterling saga still isn’t settled? Will the players actually sit out? Well, we shall see won’t we?
Somebody Wanted Waka Flocka’s Fiance Tammy Rivera To Know Where He Was Last Night
Girl, see this is the mess I’m talking about…. He cheat once and you accept it, he will continue and this is a prime example…. Now Joining the Love & Hip Hop cast has him as fair game, especially when it comes to the groupies that he decides to step out with while engaged to his longtime boo Tammy!
Somebody wanted Tammy to know Waka is out here creeping and this is beyond sad… The bird who took this picture is equally ridiculous for thinking she accomplished something! Like, what kind of validation do you get from “stealing” community penis? How does one’s self-esteem get so low?
