PARKLAND — A suspected shooter is in custody and as many as 17 people are dead in a school shooting at a Parkland high school.
Authorities have taken a person into custody in connection a deadly school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
BSO confirmed the suspected shooter has been taken into custody and at least 17 people have been injured in the shooting.
Sources have confirmed that as many as 17 people are dead.
A senior official said the shooter used a rifle. Officers could be seen handling someone in handcuffs at a community at 11735 NW 47th Drive, near the school just before 4 p.m.
A source briefed on the events said the shooter “is possibly a former student.”
named Nicholas Cruz. The father of a student at the school says the shooter was allegedly “wearing a black vest with a red shirt…and supposedly he pulled the fire alarm and planned it,” according to CBS This Morning.
Margate Fire Dept. said earlier that anywhere from 20 to 50 people might be injured. A number of people could be seen being loaded into ambulances on a stretcher around 3 p.m.
The school was place on lockdown, but students were trickling out in the last couple of hours, many with their hands up and tears in their eyes.
President Donald Trump has been made aware of the school shooting.
“We are monitoring the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” wrote White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement on the shooting. At last check, he was on his way to Parkland.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI are responding.
