#MAGFAB: Serena Williams for Insider - April 2022

Serena Williams made her entrance at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, California, so quickly and quietly that some didn’t even realize she’d come in until she was tucked away in her dressing room. Rocking a faded baseball cap, with her assistant and her Yorkie, Christopher Chip Rafael Nadal, in tow, she arrived almost to the minute of her 9 a.m. call time — a feat so rare for celebrities of her stature that she even beat some of her hair and makeup team.

You don’t become one of the greatest athletes of your lifetime without self-control. And that March day, Williams’ discipline was evident in everything she did.

Awards season was in full swing, and “King Richard” — a biographical film about their father, Richard Williams, that Serena and her older sister Venus produced — had been nominated multiple times across all the major ceremonies. Despite numerous warnings from her team that she was tired, Williams never once complained. She photographed four looks in under three hours to a playlist that helped set the tempo. At one point the infamous beat drop of Mya’s “Case of the Ex” sent the room into a fever pitch, with everyone singing along like they were putting on for the 99s and 2000s. By 12:30 p.m., Williams was back in cozy clothes, ready to knock out our interview two hours ahead of schedule.

Williams is clearly a master at time management — except when it comes to herself. “I'm really bad at self-care,” she told me. “I was just telling my chief of staff that I need to get a pedicure because it's been two years since I sat in a chair and had one. Maybe I could do that while I'm multitasking and taking calls.”

Before you panic like I did, Williams’ cuticles are fine. She’s been sticking to at-home treatments as of late, but she could use a proper spa day. The issue is not that she hasn’t figured out work-life balance, but, like many mothers, that she struggles not to give all her personal time to her 4-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia.

“Mom guilt is real. I always feel so guilty when I'm doing something on my own,” she said. “I don't know if I'm a good mom, and I don't know if my method works, but I'm very hands-on with my daughter, and it was the same with our parents. So I've set really good boundaries, but then after work, I'm going right to my daughter. And that's amazing and good, but now it's like, ‘Okay, what happens to Serena?'”

I didn’t expect to hear Williams ask herself the question of the hour, albeit in a different context. At 40, she’s been a champion for most of her life (she won her first Grand Slam title 22 years ago), and this season feels like an inflection point. Since suffering a hamstring injury at Wimbledon last year, she’s been forced to sit out most of the recent major tournaments, meaning fans have had to adjust to seeing her off the court more than on. But Williams has always been prepared for the inevitable moment when her body undermines her. She’s spent a lot of her recovery time diversifying her already thick business portfolio and pouring devotion into other parts of her life. This chapter doesn’t seem to be the end of anything, but rather a chance for Williams to again show the world why she’s never one to be counted out.

Williams’s rise from underdog to winning the most Grand Slam singles titles of any player in tennis’ open era is one of the greatest sports stories in history. She has dominated tennis for so long now that it’s hard to remember those first few years when we watched her fight to beat the greats, including her big sister, Venus. But it was in that pocket of time that I became a fan. Her determination to become No. 1 was so palpable that it felt impossible not to root for her. You could practically see her fire and passion bubbling to the surface as she competed. I knew it would only be a matter of time before she reached full boil — and what a rumble she made when she did.

Watching her win every title and break countless records has brought me a level of joy I’ve never experienced from any team sport. Because, unlike many of the men Williams is often compared to in debates about the greatest athlete of all time, she has won the majority of these matches on her own. And she has done so loudly, whether roaring in a way that forced everyone to feel the power she was exerting; exuberantly leaping or pointing her finger in the air to signal she’s No. 1 after a win; wearing bold tennis outfits despite how uncomfortable curvy Black bodies can make others feel; or standing up for herself during press conferences. Williams has become the antidote to the notion that Black girls needed to be meek or submissive to succeed. Each one of her victories felt not only like a win for us, but a challenge to take up space in our own respective passions, too.

But the more I grew to understand the racism that separates Black excellence from white, the more I wondered how she dealt with it all on such a grand scale.

Stevie J Officially Dropped By Lawyers In Ongoing Divorce Battle W/ Faith Evans

It looks like Stevie J is in need of a new lawyer if he plans on following through with a divorce from his estranged wife Faith Evans

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted a motion brought by Stevie J’s (real name Steven Jordan) former representation Kimia Klein from the law firm Fox Rothschild LLP. In the court documents, Klein wrote the breakdown in their “attorney-client relationship” was due to a “genuine conflict”  between the firm and Stevie J, 50. She said,

“Despite several attempts by my office to informally resolve the issues with Steven, we have been unsuccessful in resolving the issues.”

Reportedly, the attorney told the court she did not wish to provide any further details on the matter unless they spoke privately.

She also said the situation with the reality tv star has escalated to the point where none of her coworkers want to be involved with the case. She explained,

“I feel compelled to articulate that the relationship has broken down sufficiently so that my colleagues and I cannot continue to represent Steven, and that conflicts have risen.”

Although Stevie J did not object to his former lawyer’s move, he has yet to notify the court of new representation.

As previously reported, ‘Love & Hip Hop’ star, Stevie J filed for divorce from his wife, R&B singer Faith Evans, 48, on November 8, 2021. The pair tied the knot in 2018 and have dealt with a number of marital issues throughout their union–including Faith Evans getting arrested for domestic violence in 2020.

Things got even more complicated when Stevie J filed to receive spousal support from Faith Evans in December. It’s also worth noting that the pair had a disagreement on when exactly they separated. Reportedly, Stevie J says they were together until Oct. 2021, while Faith Evans claims they separated back in May 2020.

With Stevie J currently without a lawyer, there is no telling when this divorce will be over.

Florida Department of Education Announced State Rejected New Math Textbooks Over Critical Race Theory

The Florida Department of Education recently announced that the state rejected over 50 math textbooks from the 2022-2023 school year curriculum due to critical race theory and other reasons.

The department stated that 54 out of 132 of the textbook options would not be accepted to the state’s adopted list because they did not meet Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics, CNN reported.

The list of rejected books makes up close to 41% of submissions, which is the most in Florida’s history.

Reasons for rejecting the 54 textbooks included references to critical race theory, “inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics,” the release stated.

Critical race theory has become a highly politicized topic in recent years, with those against it claiming the area of study is based on Marxism and should be seen as a threat to the American way of life.

However, scholars who study the theory say critical race theory looks at how a history of inequality and racism in America continues to impact American society today.

The sunshine state banned the subject from being taught in schools in June 2021. Gov. Ron DeSantis said that allowing critical race theory to be taught would teach children that “the country is rotten and that our institutions are illegitimate.”

According to the ban, instruction in schools must be “factual and objective,” and it specifically prohibits “theories that distort historical events” — including “the teaching of Critical Race Theory, meaning the theory that racism is not merely the product of prejudice, but that racism is embedded in American society and its legal systems in order to uphold the supremacy of white persons.”

Florida has also prohibited the teaching of material from the 1619 Project, which is the New York Times’ Pulitzer Prize-winning project that reframes American history around the date of August 1619-when the first slave ship arrived on America’s shores.

The highest number of books thrown out was for grades K-5. Apparently, an “alarming” 71% were not aligned with Florida standards, or the books included prohibited topics.

Despite rejecting 41% of materials submitted, every core math course and grade is covered with at least one book, the release said.

DeSantis said he is grateful for the department’s thorough review of the books to see if they comply with the law.

“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” the governor said.

The ‘Verzuz’ Between Mary Mary And BeBe & CeCe Winans Was A Perfect Black Easter Service

Late near the midnight hour on Easter Sunday (April 17), saints gathered from far and wide to the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, formally known as Vibiana, for the Verzuz between gospel legends, Mary Mary and BeBe & CeCe Winans—hosted by KevOnStage.

Though Tina Campbell from the sister duo was the only one present with her church hat to complete her Easter fit, Erica Campbell matched her sibling with a pink suit set while BeBe Winans rocked all black and CeCe wore a shimmering red/gold ensemble and gold platform heels. The looks are only one portion of Easter Sunday traditions we’re accustomed to, so this was worth mentioning.

When the face-off begin, it quickly became obvious that BeBe thought this was an actual battle because his commentary about Mary Mary’s lack of hits and such was awkwardly unwarranted. CeCe, on the other hand, remained impartial and gracious.

As both duos breezed through their hits dating back decades including “Thankful,” “Close To You,” “Can’t Give Up Now,” “Walking,” “Lost Without You,” and “I’ll Take You There,” the night did not proceed without a bit of shade and, of course, some technical difficulties.

As CeCe began singing her Whitney Houston-assisted ballad, “Count On Me,” the livestream was suspended across platforms—potentially due to copyright issues—but the feed picked back up briefly as Mary Mary belted out with their praise-worthy tune, “Yesterday.” However, for the first time in Verzuz history, there was an encore performance of “Yesterday” since the feed cut out and not everyone got to witness the greatness bestowed upon us.

As both parties sang their respective versions of “Heaven” in what many presumed to be the end of the sanctified event, Erica Campbell came through with her trap-gospel jam, “I Luh God.” Moments later, Stevie Wonder made his way to the stage for the benediction where he offered his remarks and discussed the state of the world, voting rights, the anti-lynching law, and how “America has so much possibility [and needs to] grow up and get the job done.”

Following this Easter Sunday special, Verzuz returns with a Mother’s Day special on May 8, a boxing “Fight Night Music” special on May 14 featuring Cypress Hill vs. Onyx, and a Memorial Day weekend special.

The Mary Mary and BeBe/CeCe Winans Verzuz is available for replay on FITE and Triller.

‘Superfly’ Actor Kaalan Walker Convicted of Serial Rape

Kaalan Walker, an actor and rapper best known for his role in “Superfly,” was convicted of raping six people and sexually assaulting another.

His attorney, Andrew Flier, confirmed the news to TheWrap, adding that he plans to appeal the decision.

“Mr. Walker maintains his complete innocence to the charges and allegations,” Flier wrote in an email. “The defense is very confidant [sic] that the convictions will be reversed.”

A Los Angeles County jury found Walker, 27, guilty of the charges on Monday. He was acquitted of an additional three charges, including two charges of forcible rape, according to media reports.

Walker faces a maximum sentence of 100 years to life in prison. He is due back in court on May 27.

Walker also reportedly maintained his innocence in the court room on Monday. According to Rolling Stone, as he was led away in handcuffs, he yelled: “I didn’t rape anybody, your honor.”

Prosecutors said the attacks occurred between 2013 and 2018. Three of the victims were underage.

Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Wallace told Rolling Stone that Walker “name-dropped Drake and used his connection to Halle Berry” in order to gain access to women.

“We feel that with this verdict, the jury gave these victims back their voices. This was very sophisticated,” Wallace told the outlet, adding: “Once they were there, it wasn’t about doing photo shoots, it was about assaulting them.”

The LA County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Mac Miller's drug dealer sentenced to 11 years in prison

Just under four years since the untimely death of Mac Miller, the drug dealer involved in supplying fentanyl-laced pills to the rapper has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison.

Ryan Reavis will be in prison for 10 years and 11 months following his guilty plea in November to one count of distributing fentanyl according to reports from TMZ. Initially, he asked to serve 5 years for the crime, but the time given is still under the 12.5 years that prosecutors were hoping for.

According to reports, federal agents reveal that Reavis equipped Miller’s alleged drug dealer, Cameron Pettit with the laced oxycodone pills. The call to do so was led by Stephen Walter who also recently pled guilty to distributing fentanyl. Reavis still doubles down on the fact that he was “just the middle man.”

Reavis’ initial arrest was in 2019 when authorities confirmed the discovery of a fake doctor’s notepad which sources allege was used to fill prescriptions. It is also reported that they found firearms and drugs on the suspect while in Arizona.

He also claims negligence in knowing that the pills he was distributing were counterfeit, however, Miller’s mother, Karen Meyers, provided a statement during the sentencing suggesting that everyone involved was responsible for the death of her son.

“He would never knowingly take a pill with fentanyl, ever. He wanted to live and was excited about the future,” said Karen Meyers. “The hole in my heart will always be there.”

At this time Reavis, who has also been named as the supplier in the case, is just one out of three men who have reached sentencing in the case. Pettit and Walter are currently still awaiting a decision on their involvement in Miller’s death.

Mac Miller died on September 7, 2018, following an overdose caused by fentanyl-laced drugs

Tyga Sued By Vans Over ‘Wavy Baby’ Sneaker Design

Looks like Tyga has himself wrapped up in another lawsuit, but this time it’s over his “Wavy Baby” sneaker design that collaborated with MSCHF.

Vans is claiming the rapper stole their signature sneaker silhouette. The Tyga-designed skate sneaker made was released on Monday (April 18) priced at $220. Tyga recently took to Twitter to let fans know the shoes sold out in just 10 minutes.

Before the release, a lawsuit was already sent out last week from Vans alleging MSCHF stole components of their classic Old Skool silhouette.

The colorways are related but the MSCHF pair uses wavy white lines that match more of a reading of someone’s heartbeat on an EKG scan.

According to Hypebeast, the lawsuit alleges Tyga/MSCHF committed “trademark infringement, false designation of origin, unfair competition and trademark dilution.”

“MSCHF, in collaboration with [Tyga], has shamelessly marketed the Wavy Baby shoe in a direct effort to confuse consumers, unlawfully siphon sales from Vans, and intentionally damage Vans’ valuable intellectual property rights,” the lawsuit allegedly states. “The Wavy Baby shoe blatantly and unmistakably incorporates Vans’ iconic trademarks and trade dress.”

HighSnobiety spoke to MSCHF who argued that Vans was “stabbing” them in the back and wanted half of their earnings from the collab.

“Vans reached out to settle with us proactively,” MSCHF relayed. “Turns out that they were shaking our hand at the same time they were stabbing us in the back.”

Lizzo Confirms She’s in a Relationship

Lizzo finally confirmed she has a boyfriend during a candid interview with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM Radio Andy show on April 18.

When the host asked whether she was still with the mystery man she was spotted with at Craig's restaurant in West Hollywood back in February, the "Good as Hell" rapper laughed before answering, "Yeah, whatever yeah."

The duo was also photographed together at Crustacean restaurant in Beverly Hills last October.

Andy suggested it must be hard for her to date being such a superstar, but Lizzo shrugged it off, saying her fame is "not even a factor" in her relationship.

"If you have the right person, no, not at all," she shared. "It should be mutually supportive no matter what that person does."

Lizzo, 33, didn't reveal her boyfriend's identity, but she did say he was on hand to support her during her April 16 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, where she joked about the rumors of her "dating every little white boy in Hollywood."

"They think I'm collecting members of One Direction like Infinity Stones," she said during her opening monologue. "I even heard a rumor that I'm pregnant with Chris Evans' baby. I have no idea where that one started."

She added, "It could be the TikTok I did where I said, ‘I'm pregnant with Chris Evans' baby, y'all. It's called manifesting."

Back in February, Lizzo admitted she was "a little bit" in love during a conversation with Variety and teased that her forthcoming project was inspired by romance.

"It is a love album," she revealed. "I'm shocked."

In March 2021, Lizzo was photographed sharing PDA with the same mystery man on a balcony in Malibu, Calif., but remained coy on the nature of their relationship. Days later she posted a thirst trap to Instagram with the caption, "SINGLE" and a winking tongue-out emoji.

Dwayne Johnson Celebrates Daughter Tiana's 4th Birthday: 'My Greatest Joy Is Being Your Daddy'

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson celebrated his youngest daughter's fourth birthday over the weekend, marking the celebration with a post shared on Instagram Sunday.

"Big Easter/Tia's birthday weekend!!!🐰❤🥳 🎂🧜🏾‍♀️🐇," Johnson, 49, wrote alongside a series of images of Tiana's birthday festivities.

"She runs around NON-STOP like the little tornado she is and when it comes to eating her birthday cake, it all comes to a hard stop - meaning I have to stop doing what I'm doing when she says… 'Daddy feed me' 😂🙋🏽‍♂️👍🏾," the proud dad continued.

Concluding the caption of his post, Johnson wrote, "Happy 4th Birthday & Happy Easter, my love! My greatest joy is being your daddy."

The Jumanji star also added two hashtags to describe the father-daughter pair: "#LittleTornado" and "#BigDinosaur."

In addition to Tiana, Johnson is also dad to daughter Jasmine, 6, with wife Lauren Hashian, as well as daughter Simone, 20, whom he shares with his ex-wife Dany Garcia.

Johnson often shares footage on social media of his time at home with his daughters. Last March, the wrestler-turned-actor posted an adorable throwback video with Tiana, in which he taught her to tell herself a variety of positive affirmations in honor of International Women's Day.

While holding Tiana close to his chest, Johnson asked her, "Can you say I'm a pretty girl?" which prompted her to adorably mumbled back, "I'm a pretty girl."

"That's right, and even more importantly than that can you say 'I'm an awesome girl?'" Johnson then asked, to which Tiana replied with a smile, "Awesome girl." The father of three also taught his little one how to say that she is a "very smart girl."

Johnson previously opened up about having all daughters in a candid Instagram post shared in February 2021 that featured a photo of the star walking hand-in-hand with Tiana.

"Every man wants a son, but every man needs a daughter," Johnson wrote at the time. "All my girls have become the great equalizers in my life - I'm surrounded by estrogen and wouldn't have it any other way 😊. And man I hope she never gets tired of holding these big ol' dinosaur hands, though I suspect one day she will 🦖🤚🏾☺️."

Johnson has long been open about being a dad to all girls, even previously joking that he's unable to "make" boys. Back in December 2017, ahead of his third daughter's arrival, he told The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon all about his excitement for raising a third daughter.

"I've got strong swimmers, Jimmy," he told the host at the time. "I feel good. I was raised by women all my life, basically. And this is my third daughter. [I'm] surrounded by estrogen. Bring on the estrogen!"

Anthony Anderson Says He ‘Lost It’ When Filming Final Episode of “Black-ish”

Tracee Ellis Ross recently opened up about how she had to give herself “permission to cry.” And not Anderson is feeling the tears as well. However, he didn’t expect it.

“Actually the last day, I think I cried a little bit more than [Ross] did, and I didn’t think it was going to hit me the way that it did,” he said. “Because we had been working up to that moment — we knew what the last day was. I had been prepping myself for it, and in the last scene on the last day is when I lost it, and it was unexpected for me. I didn’t expect to lose it the way that I did, but that just goes to show how much I love what I do [and] love doing it with the people that I did it with for the last eight years.”

Ellen then commented that he should be “proud” to have such a successful groundbreaking show. He responds, “We are, we are — from my partner in crime with this who created the show, Kenya Barris, to our writers to our directors to everyone.”

“When Kenya and I sat down almost ten years ago now, we looked at what was missing from the landscape of television for us — he and I as viewers — and we wanted to make an important show that had an impact,” he said. “We took a page from Norman Lear’s book with The Jeffersons, Good Times, All in the Family, and we wanted to do a show like that — a show that had social commentary, with unapologetic lead characters — and I believe we were successful.”

Brandon Bills No Longer Cooperating with Police in Bowling Alley Brawl Case Involving Dababy,

The investigation into the bowling alley fight with Dababy and DaniLeigh’s Brother Brandon Bills has halted.

Source tells TMZ that the investigation is at a standstill because the victim allegedly refuses to cooperate with the police.

According to investigators, even though there is a video of much of the fight, it is tough to move forward without a victim.

In February, it was reported that Dababy and crew got into a fight with Brandon at a CA bowling alley.

Police decided to pursue the case after video footage appeared to show the rapper throwing the first punch before his crew jumped in.

The beef between DaBaby and Brandon started after Brandon’s sister, DaniLeigh, the rapper’s baby mama, had a public outburst on Instagram live. During another incident, DaniLeigh was arrested for assault after she was involved in a blowout fight with the rapper at his home.

The bowling alley investigation is still active but won’t move forward because Brandon isn’t cooperating.

So far, it’s unclear why Brandon isn’t cooperating with police in this investigation.

Minnesota teacher cuts Black boy's hair without parents' permission

Minnesota mothers are demanding answers after their 12-year-old Black son’s hair was cut off by a teacher last week without their permission.

Daetney McReynolds appeared on her local CBS affiliate’s station, WCCO 4, to discuss what happened to her child. Because he is a minor, the station withheld his identity.

“It was actually growing pretty well. He was thinking about all the kinds of styles he wanted to do with it,” McReynolds said as she described her son’s afro.

The boy’s parents were “shocked” and blindsided as he returned home from school as no officials had notified them of the incident.

“Are you guys going to be mad?” the boy asked once at home. When his parents asked him why they would be angry, that is when the child removed his hat to reveal an uneven and unauthorized haircut.

“My teacher and me cut my hair,” the boy said.

After pressing the issue of how this situation occurred, the child told his parents that he had been upset about his hair. He went on to say that he didn’t like his “lining.” That’s when the teacher — whose identity has also been withheld — grabbed some scissors and began to cut the boy’s hair off, offering to “fix it.”

The boy’s mother Tadow McReynolds did not understand why she nor her wife were notified. Tadow asked, “What made her think that this is OK? If you were going to help my child why wouldn’t you do it the proper way, [the] common-sense way, the helpful way? By getting him some real help?”

The McReynolds shared photos and videos online and say that their “village” came to their rescue.

William Baker — an on-air personality at KMOJ Radio — told WCCO 4 that in the Black community, a person’s hair is their crown.

“It just demoralized him, just take his pride away. And now his hair is being put in a situation where people are dictating how he should look,” Baker said of the situation.

The radio host reached out to Barber Big Lew who showed up with his mobile barber business and fixed the boy’s haircut in time for him to get a fresh start at a new school.
