#MAGFAB: Tracee Ellis Ross for InStyle US - Spring 2022

Tracee Ellis Ross is covering InStyle’s Spring Digital Issue! And right now she’s saying goodbye to ‘Black-ish,’ recalling bygone fashion eras, and being her own dream come true.

On her role on Girlfriends: “Then I was on Girlfriends, and then I was on Girlfriends, and then I was… yep… on Girlfriends,” Ross says. For most of the aughts, she played attorney Joan Clayton, the stylish and oft unlucky-in-love glue of her friend group. “I felt like I entered that show as a decently talented person who thought she was silly and cute and I became a seasoned, vetted comedic actress after we did 170-some-odd episodes.”

On Girlfriends: “It’s really important to me that it’s recognized mostly because it was a great show,” she says. “It was so representative of who we are as Black women. The fashion was great; the storylines were ahead of the time. People always say, ‘Oh, Black-ish deals with such heavy issues.’ I’m like, so did Girlfriends. We dealt with chlamydia, we dealt with colorism … all those things, and we were four Black women leading a show.”

On roles in Hollywood: “I really thought the pearly gates of Hollywood were going to open,” she says of the months after. “They did not. I thought there would be stacks of scripts at my door. There were not.” And she wanted — and needed — to work. “I had done decently well in terms of my salary, but keep in mind the landscape of television and Hollywood: I was a Black actress on a show that was on UPN and CW. It was a very nice living, but it’s not like I could stop working and be fine for the rest of my life.”

On Black-ish: “We have the best crew, we have the best cast, and we had a ball,” she says. “I’m so proud of the work we did, and we got an end. The combination of those two things allows me to leave with a lot of joy and pride, and a really full heart.”

On her relationship status and childhood dreams: “Culturally, young girls are taught to dream of their wedding and not the life they want to be living or the people they want to become,” Ross says, “and I was not spared that messaging as a child — not from my mom or my dad, but from the world that we lived in. I spent a lot of time dreaming of my wedding. I can only imagine how much more I would’ve dreamt of — or how much sooner I would’ve got to some of my dreams — had we been in the conversation that we’re in now, had I had people like myself and others to hear from as different examples of how to cultivate happiness and joy and a life that matches you.”

Do You Agree? Former RHOA Producer Carlos King Says NeNe Leakes Is ‘The Greatest Housewife Of All Time’.

The King has spoken! Former ‘Real Housewives Of Atlanta’ producer Carlos King has named Nene Leakes the greatest housewife of all time!

During Wednesday’s (Apr.13) episode of his new podcast Reality with The King, the 42-year-old reality tv producer dished on his top five favorite housewives from the Bravo franchise. Carlos King named NeNe Leakes for the #1 spot, giving her the title as the greatest housewife of all time.

The self proclaimed “King of Reality Tv” worked closely with Nene Leakes during a fundamental time for the show. King produced eight seasons of the hit Bravo show, which many fans refer to it as the “golden years” of the franchise.

While Nene Leakes has always been considered an ‘OG’ of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, things took a rocky turn after her departure from the franchise for season 13. Leakes had a major fall out with the Bravo network and accused them of being racist. Last week, NeNe posted a cryptic message to her instagram page about supporting black women, restricting any comments.

According to Black America Web, NeNe believes her turbulent relationship with Bravo and Andy Cohen has left her blacklisted. The reality star even inserted “BLACKLISTED” as part of her Instagram and Twitter bio.

Since his departure from RHOA, Carlos King has taken his talents to The OWN Network, producing reality tv show, “Love & Marriage: Huntsville”, which quickly became the highest rated unscripted show on the OWN network since 2019.

Carlos King is the founder and CEO of Kingdom Reign Entertainment, which is also behind Lifetime’s My Killer Body with K. Michelle, Netflix’s Styling Hollywood and BET’s Gucci Mane & Keyshia Ka’Oir and has a first-look deal with the OWN network.

#NewMusic from Mike Phillips ‘Under The ‘City Lights’

Big things are happening for Mike Phillips in 2022. This year the celebrated saxophonist will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of his classic debut album You Have Reached Mike Phillips. Back in February, it was announced that he created a new jazz label named Keep It Moving Music (or KIMM for short) in partnership with SRG-ILS Group. Phillips now gives fans a sample of what to expect from his label with his new single “City Lights.”

Mike Philly is in his jazz bag on “City Lights.” The song was written by Claude Villani, who is the CEO of SRG-ILS Group and himself a musician, over 40 years ago, and Phillips literally breathed life into it alongside producer Hamilton Hardin. “City Lights” showcases Mike’s virtuosic saxophone playing over percussion and guitar on the melodic bop.

Rihanna AND A$AP Rocky Escape To Barbados Amid False Breakup Rumors

And The Person Who Started The Rumor Has Issues An Apology

Amid the erroneous reports of a breakup and cheating allegations, the couple headed to Barbados.

The singer, 34, and rapper, 33, were seen arriving at Grantly Adams International Airport in Rihanna’s native island on Friday night. In footage, obtained by The Shade Room, the two walked out of the airport and got into a sprinter van.

Their getaway comes amid rumors that Rocky cheated on his pregnant girlfriend with designer Amina Muaddi. But Muaddi–who designed shoes for Rihanna’s Fenty collection–denied the “unfounded” allegations in a statement.

“I’ve always believed that an unfounded lie spread on social media doesn’t deserve any response or clarification, especially one that is so vile,” Muaddi wrote on her Instagram Story Friday. “I initially assumed that this fake gossip — fabricated with such malicious intent — would not be taken seriously.”

“However in the last 24h I’ve been reminded that we live in a society that is so quick to speak on topics regardless of factual basis and that nothing is off limits,” she continued. “Not even during what should be one of the most beautiful and celebrated times in one’s life.”

The person who started the rumor, writer Louis Pisano, has since apologized. “Last night I made a dumb decision to tweet some information I had received,” he tweeted. “I’d like to formally apologize to all parties I involved with my actions and for my reckless tweets.”

Rihanna and Rocky, who are expecting their first child, previously vacationed in Barbados for Christmas in 2020 when Rihanna introduced her boyfriend to her family.

“My mother has a really good read on people. She observes first and then she’ll move slowly. I guess I’m like that too,” she told Vogue. “There are some guys that I’ve dated that she won’t even look at to this day. But she was charmed by him from the jump.”...

Tasha Smith Joins Lee Daniels on His Untitled Horror Netflix Movie

“Empire’s” Tasha Smith is returning to work with Lee Daniels on his Netflix untitled exorcism thriller, reports Deadline.

There was a massive bidding war for the star-studded exorcism movie package that will also reunite Daniels with his Oscar-nominated The United States Vs Billie Holiday star Andra Day, who’ll star with Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water, Ma), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Rob Morgan (Don’t Look Up), Caleb McLaughlin (“Stranger Things”) and Aunjanue Ellis.

“Day will play the mother of an Indiana family whose children purportedly became demonically possessed in a thriller inspired by an actual case.”

Here’s the site’s breakdown of the true story that’s inspiring this mega-exorcism project:

“In a case widely covered at the time, Latoya Ammons and her three children experienced strange incidents in their Gary, Indiana home that grew progressively worse, with the children levitating, becoming violent with each other, and speaking in growls and deep voices with no recollection afterwards.

“Skeptics abounded, but the Gary Police Department, Department of Child Services and the local church and hospital all became involved, filing reports that took the supernatural occurrences seriously — officers, doctors and social workers said they witnessed many of the incidents, including one in which her 9-year old son walked backwards up a wall.

“The Indianapolis Star covered it closely, as the Department of Child Services investigated it.”

Dave Coggeshall wrote drafts as did Elijah Bynum. Then Daniels rewrote it himself and that is the script that buyers read. It uses the case to frame a fictional thriller, as was done with The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, The Conjuring and other franchises purported to be based on or inspired by actual events, adds the site.

Steph Curry stars in teaser for Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’

Steph Curry stars in the latest promo clip for Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror flick Nope.

Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions company released the brief visual featuring the NBA sharpshooter on Saturday (April 16).

Within the clip, Curry appears to walk into a barn equipped with a basketball court to put up some shots. Before he shoots, he turns on a record player and a song featuring KeKe Palmer doing a call and response begins to play.

Curry dribbles and throws up a rare miss from just inside the three point line. The lights dim, the record stops, and Curry realizes something ominous is taking place.

Outside, a gust of wind is blowing tumbleweeds as Curry notices the ball is now in front of the barn. Before he can pick it up it’s sucked up into the sky. “Nope,” Curry says before throwing on his hoodie and walking off.

“It’s a NOPE for @StephenCurry,” Monkeypaw captioned the 30 second clip.

In February, Universal Pictures unleashed the first trailer for Peele’s next horror film.

Nope reunites Peele — who wrote, directed, and produced the movie — with Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya.

KeKe Palmer, Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott, and Steven Yeun also appear in the creepy flick that not much is known about at the moment.

Within the official trailer, ominous dark clouds seem to bring trouble to a Black-owned ranch in Hollywood, California. “What’s a bad miracle?” Kaluuya asks in the two-minute teaser.

At one point in the preview, Palmer’s character gets hurled into the air but it’s unclear who or what is causing the disturbance.

The description on IDMB reads: “Residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.”

Check out the new teaser HERE and look out for Nope to hit theaters on July 22.

Lil Kim’s Supreme collection sells out within minutes

Lil Kim’s capsule collection with Supreme sold out out within minutes.

“Wowwww! Everything sold out in 2 and a half minutes! God is Good! Thank U so much for your support,” Kim shared via Instagram.

The items, which include a T-shirt, a short sleeve button down, and a skateboard, all feature a piece of the classic image of Kim on her ‘96 Hard Core promotional poster.

The T-shirt comes in black and shows the full poster of the “Big Momma Thang” rapper squatting in a leopard print bikini and high-heel sandals. “To Supreme, Love Lil Kim” is written on the front of the shirt and Kim’s Quiet Storm ( remix) lyrics “Hot Damn Ho Here We Go Again” is printed across the back.

Both the skateboard and the button down are decorated with an all-over print of Kim’s face from her Hard Core shoot. Select colorways have already sold out but Supreme has restocked, as of Saturday (April 16), and some pieces are still available.

In a recent interview with Essence, the Queen Bee said the collaboration with the streetwear company began years ago during the quarantine.

“I was just at home in the office because everyone’s office was in their home at that time. They reached out, and I was like, ‘Let’s make it happen,’ and we made it happen,” Kim recalled.

The Brooklyn native told the Black women’s lifestyle outlet “it’s an honor” that her Hard Core poster is still being celebrated 25 years later.

“It still gives me chills that it’s an iconic photo, like a Marilyn Monroe kind of poster,” she said.

Supreme was able to get approval to use the legendary photo, shot by Michael Lavine, from Kim’s initial record company.

“It’s Inspired generations,” Kim told Essence. So, it’s cool that they’re open to sharing it. It’s a real blessing to still have that kind of impact with the world, the fans, and everyone who’s been riding with Lil’ Kim, the brand.”

As for her style legacy, which has often been imitated throughout hip hop, Kim said that she just wants people to think of her as a “fly ass bitch.”

Jon Batiste to Make Acting Debut in New Musical Adaptation of ‘The Color Purple’

Grammy winner Jon Batiste is set to make his acting debut in Warner Bros.’ upcoming adaptation of The Color Purple.

The film, which is being directed by Blitz Bazawule (Black Is King), is based on the Tony-winning musical from Marsha Norman, Brenda Lee, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, which was itself adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker.

Joining a cast that includes Aunjanue Ellis, H.E.R., Corey Hawkins, and Taraji P. Henson, Batiste will play Grady, a marijuana-loving womanizer married to jazz and blues singer Shug Avery (who was played by Jennifer Hudson on Broadway and will be portrayed here by Henson).

With a screenplay by The Chi’s Marcus Gardley and music by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, the film’s story centers on Celie (Fantasia Barrino, reprising her Broadway role), a poor Black woman living in the early-1900s South who must find her way to self-love and acceptance after suffering years of horrific abuse at the hands of her father and other figures in her life.

Production on the musical is underway in Georgia. Oprah Winfrey, who played the character of Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation of Walker’s book, is producing alongside Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. (Sanders and Jones also produced the Broadway show.) Walker is executive producing the film, which Warner Bros. will release on Dec. 20, 2023.

Batiste won an Oscar in 2020 for the musical score of Pixar’s Soul. Though he has appeared in films before, it was as an interview subject in documentaries like Oscar Peterson: Black + White. The Color Purple marks the 35-year-old musician’s first acting gig. The five-time Grammy winner, who took home Album of the Year this year for We Are. is represented by CAA and attorneys Dan Shulman and Evan Krauss

Garcelle Beauvais Speaks on Dating Will Smith and Why It Ended, Claims She Once Turned Down

Garcelle Beauvais, who is soon set to return to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills for its upcoming twelfth season, has provided fans with some insight on the moment she decided to “exit stage left” with regards to her and Will Smith’s brief relationship in the ‘90s.

On a recent episode of the Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang podcast, Beauvais looked back on what she described as a relationship that wasn’t of the “long-lasting” variety. As detailed in a subsequent report from MadameNoire, Beauvais first met Smith on the set of Fresh Prince.

According to Beauvais, her decision to “exit” came about after realizing that things were getting serious between Will and Jada, who would go on to marry in 1997 and remain a couple to this day.

“I remember one day calling [Will] and he was in the car. And his son, with Sheree, [they] were in the back,” Beauvais said on the podcast, referencing Sheree Zampino and Will’s son, Trey. “So you know, he picked up on the car or Bluetooth or whatever it was back in the day, or speakerphone—whatever it was—and he said, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ And I said, ‘I’m great.’”

From there, Beauvais said she heard “this little voice in the background” ask Will if it was “Miss Jada” on the phone. “And that’s when I was like okay—I’m not the only one. Exit stage left,” she said, laughing. Hear the full episode below.

As Real Housewives enthusiasts will note, both Garcelle and Sheree (who’s now also a star on the reality franchise) previously discussed the Oscar-winning King Richard actor during a 2020 episode of the series.

Beauvais this week released her new book, titled Love Me As I Am. In it, per an excerpts-filled piece from Us Weekly, she also gave fans some Michael Jordan intel. While reflecting on her earlier modeling days, Beauvais recalled meeting the legendary NBA star and being “impressed” with him. When Jordan offered to have her join him on a trip to Hawaii, however, Beauvais declined.

“I was impressed by how tall and handsome he was,” Beauvais said. “He took me on a golf date after the shoot and showed me how to hold a club properly and swing. Like a naive little girl, I was ‘clutching my pearls’ and shocked by the idea of going to Hawaii with a man I had just met.” Further addressing this moment, Beauvais added, “I blew that one!”

12 People Injured, Three Arrested in South Carolina Mall Shooting

Three armed suspects have been arrested in connection to a South Carolina mall shooting.

The Columbia Police Department said it’s unclear which individual fired the shots, and the incident didn’t appear to be a random attack.

“We believe the individuals that were armed knew each other, and there was some type of conflict that occurred which resulted in gunfire,” Columbia Police Chief William H. “Skip” Holbrook told reporters Saturday. “This was not a situation where we had some random person show up at a mall to discharge a firearm and injure people.”

According to CNN, the youngest shooting victim is 15, while the oldest is 73.

Multiple injuries have been confirmed in connection to a Saturday mall shooting in South Carolina.

The Columbia Police Department say officers responded to reports of “shots fired” at around 2:30 p.m. at the Columbiana Centre Mall near Harbison Boulevard. Officers have since started evacuating the building, while emergency personnel provide medical aid to victims.

CPD Chief William H. “Skip” Holbrook told reporters at least 12 individuals were injured during the incident. Holbrook said 10 of those victims sustained gunshot wounds; two of them are in critical but stable condition, while the others are stable. The chief said the remaining victims suffered non-gun-related injuries in a stampede that broke out after the shots.

Law enforcement told mall employees to shelter in place while authorities assess the situation. Kelly said authorities are “now going store to store and closet to closet searching for someone with a weapon.”

“Officers will come to you as a protected escort,” the department tweeted. “DO NOT leave a store until told to do so by proper authorities.”

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department announced a reunification site was set up at a nearby Fairfield Inn, located at 320 Columbiana Drive. Authorities urged the public to be cautious when driving around the area, as the expect high-volume traffic.

CPD have not made any arrests in connection to the reported shooting. Stay tuned as more details become available.

Thandiwe Newton Reportedly Headed To Rehab Following Dramatic ‘Magic Mike’ Exit

Thandiwe Newton is “likely heading to rehab,” just days after bowing out of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, it has been reported. The 49-year-old was alleged to have left film staffers concerned about her behavior during the taping of recently shot scenes in London.

But by Tuesday, The Pursuit of Happyness star hopped back on a plane to the US, where she’s now hoping to check into a rehab facility, a source told the publication.

She seemed so stressed, she even brought her two pet rabbits to her hotel for emotional support.”

The couple also shares three children: Ripley, 21, Nico, 17, and Booker, 8.

Dababy Addresses Home Intruder Shooting

DaBaby is speaking out after he allegedly shot an intruder during a home invasion.

Officers responded to a shooting at the rapper’s $2.3 million home in Troutman, North Carolina on Wednesday evening (April 13) after a man reportedly came onto the property without permission. According to law enforcement, DaBaby exchanged words with the intruder and shot him in the leg. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby medical facility.

On Friday, DaBaby took to Instagram to address the incident, seemingly acknowledging his involvement while claiming that he used restraint against the home intruder.

“I chose not to take a n*gga life the other day & it felt great,” he wrote alongside a clip of Cam’ron from Paid in Full, whose character Rico says, “Ni**as get shot everyday. You be alright, ni**a.”

“Buddy ain’t deserve to go, I step righteously,” DaBaby added before warning the intruder not to return. “Heal up & live my boy! Just don’t bring ya ass back.”

In the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, the trespasser can be heard screaming in pain while DaBaby tells the dispatcher that he acted in self defense.

“I shot him in his leg,” he said. “He’s trespassing on my property. … He’s neutralized until you guys get here.”

DaBaby appeared to be standing next to the man and confirmed that he was bleeding. When the dispatcher asked if the shooting victim was “completely alert,” DaBaby responded, “Do you not hear this man, bro?”

The dispatcher asked DaBaby to secure his weapon and the rapper confirmed, but he refused to put it down out of concern for his safety. Cops eventually arrived and DaBaby was cooperative.

Back in November 2018, DaBaby shot and killed a teenager while shopping with his family at a Walmart in Charlotte, claiming he acted in self defense. The 30-year-old rapper was originally charged with murder, but the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor for carrying a weapon.

Rapper Smokepurpp claims Kanye West still owes him money after writing his song with Lil Pump.

On Wednesday, the Florida rapper took to his Instagram account to express his grievances with Kanye. Smokepurpp called Kanye out says he owes him $9 million for helping write Ye’s “I Love It” song. The track snagged the number 6 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and was certified two-times platinum.

“And Kanye, n*gha, you owe me like $9 million, n*gga. Hit my line n*gga or my lawyer’s gonna hit your lawyer,” the rapper says in a video.

Smokepurpp also shared receipts with a screenshot from Wikipedia showing his writing credit on the song. “Receipts ion gotta cap for the internet,” he wrote alongside the photo with a laughing emoji.

In 2019, Smokepurpp told Adam22 of No Jumper, that he helped write the collaborative track.

“Basically, it was on Pump’s birthday,” Smokepurpp explained. “Basically, this n*gga called Pump, blah, blah, blah, he wanted to make a song ’bout this and I just wrote a song…it randomly came out.”

When asked, the rapper did say he received credit for the song saying “Yeah man, I get money.” However, that may not be all true seeing as he’s requesting his payment from Kanye.

Joseline Hernandez Sued For $25 Million For Assaulting Four Dancers On Her Reality Show

Four women who were a part of Joseline Hernandez’s reality show are suing her for assault.

According to TMZ, four dancers who starred in the show “Joseline’s Cabaret” claim Joseline attacked them on the reunion show. The ladies have filed a $25 million lawsuit against Joseline for ambushing them behind the scenes. In the court documents, the ladies state that they arrived at the set in heels but were met by Joseline wearing hard-bottom boots.

One of the dancers says Joseline kicked her in her ribs, while another one claims she was dragged and kicked in her back. The third woman alleges she was grabbed by her neck and thrown to the ground by the Puerto Rican princess. However, the last dancer seemingly got off easy and didn’t suffer from injuries like the others. According to the lawsuit, she claims Joseline only pushed her but continued to make violent threats.

The four women also claim that Joseline bragged about the altercation on social media. Apparently, during the brawl, she yelled out “Gucci gang” continuously, which the ladies say was a signal for the planned attack. The women even brought up Joseline using the phrase again when she posted a picture of the alleged boots she wore during the fight.

Joseline has yet to comment on the incident.

Las Vegas Man Fatally Shot Ex-Girlfriend’s Brother and Called Her To Taunt Her About It: ‘Ha Ha, I Got Him’

A Las Vegas man was arrested on April 8 for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend’s brother and then calling her on the phone to taunt her about it.

Byron Manning, 24, is accused of fatally shooting Ronald Moore, 34, at an apartment in North Las Vegas. According to a criminal complaint, Moore’s sister had ended her four-year relationship with Manning. The woman asked her brother to be present at the apartment due to threatening messages Manning had sent.

“The threats stated Byron was going to hurt somebody important in her life,” the report read.

It’s unclear how many people fired weapons, but Moore was gunned down at an apartment on April 7. Multiple shell casings from a .223-caliber rifle were recovered from the scene.

“Byron later called her and laughed, ‘haha, I got him,’” detectives said in the report.

Manning fled the scene and was located with his family in Jean less than two hours after the shooting.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Manning’s brothers, who were present at the apartment for the shooting, told police that he was the gunman. Manning has denied the accusations. The suspect was “evasive” during questioning and gave police “misleading answers.”

Manning was taken into custody and charged with a single count of murder. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday
