#MAGFAB: Pen茅lope Cruz Covers W Magazine’s Directors Issue

W Magazine Volume 2, The Directors Issue, on stands on March 8th features Academy Award winning actor Pen茅lope Cruz in “The Carmen Auditions”, directed and photographed by Spanish film director, Pedro Almod贸var. Now in its fourth iteration, The Directors Issue celebrates some of the greatest and most talked about directors in film this year. Shot at Almod贸var’s offices in Madrid, the director pays tribute to his longtime muse Pen茅lope Cruz, who has starred in seven of his films, and also makes a cameo as himself in the cover story. In the first of four covers, Pen茅lope Cruz and Pedro Almod贸var discuss the reinvention of Carmen for the shoot and their work together over the years.

Pen茅lope Cruz on channeling Carmen for the W Magazine shoot: “I have wanted to play Carmen since I was 4,”… “I was a ballet dancer, and Carmen is one of the great roles in ballet. When Pedro told me that we were reimagining Carmen, I was so happy.”

Pedro Almod贸var on turning down Brokeback Mountain: “I was really sad that I didn’t say yes.” “Sad in the sense that I loved the short story by Annie Proulx and also the script. But I know myself, and I knew that I needed much more of a sexual sequence than they had in the movie. Even though I was given assurances that they would let me do whatever I wanted to do, the way that I understood the sex between the characters was almost like this animalistic lovemaking. I would have added a lot of sex scenes, and I don’t think they truly would have let me. I love the Ang Lee movie, but in my version, the two men were not in love—it was something completely physical.”

Pedro Almod贸var touches on Pen茅lope and wardrobe: “It’s interesting with Pen茅lope and clothes: In her first film with me, all the clothes were secondhand, but Pen茅lope just turns everything into fashion. I say, ‘You’re a whore coming from a small village,’ but it doesn’t matter. It’s nearly impossible, because Pen茅lope looks great even with a poor outfit.”

Pedro Almod贸var on the power of the color Red: “It’s such a strong color that it just absorbs everything that’s near it.”… “In Spanish culture, red represents passion, and fire, and blood, and death—all of that.”

Pedro Almod贸var discusses Parallel Mothers and Pen茅lope’s role: “If I can tell the story of Spain through anyone, it would be Pen茅lope,”… “Her character has always been maternal in the best possible way. Even when she was so young, she always had that capacity, that generosity, that gift.”

Jaciu 100% Pure Silk Pillowcase- Set of 2

"Keep that good moisture in your hair. You want to retain it. The one thing people do that's a huge mistake is that they sleep on cotton pillowcases. It's the worst thing in the world because cotton against your hair and skin will absorb moisture. The fibers can rub against you in the wrong way and create damage. I found this beautiful silk pillowcase. Silk is smooth and it doesn't pull moisture out from your hair. It is one of the best things you can do for your hair when you go to sleep. I love this one. It's Amazon's bestseller in beauty. It's 100% pure silk. It comes in different colors."

50 has a series of shows currently airing on Starz, including "Power Book II: Ghost," "Power Book III: Raising Kanan," and "BMF," which have scored big ratings.

Estee Lauder Executive Forced Out Over Racist Instagram Post

Makeup company Estee Lauder has fired a senior executive over an Instagram post that contained the n-word.

In a statement on Monday, Estee Lauder confirmed the firing of senior executive John Demsey, who served as the Executive Group President.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Demsey posted a spoof book cover of the children’s TV show "Sesame Street" which contained the “n-word” with some letters replaced with asterisks. The post has since been deleted.

“Inclusion, diversity and equity are core to our company’s values and priorities globally. Furthermore, over the past two years, we have worked together as an organization to advance our approach to racial equity and have taken a hard look at where we can and should do better. Together we are making progress against our commitments to our employees, our partners, and consumers,” Estee Lauder said in a statement.

“Our employees, and especially our senior leaders, are accountable to continue driving our progress and to respect the values of this company for the long term.”

Demsey’s Instagram account, which has more than 73,000 followers and nearly 51,000 posts, contains high fashion images and memes that range from jokes about heiresses and poorly applied eyeliner to ones about being unmotivated and depressed, the Journal reported.

The New York-based cosmetic company had previously placed Demsey without pay indefinitely on Tuesday, the Journal noted.

Demsey, who has worked with entertainment stars such as Mary J. Blige,  Rihanna, and rapper Saweetie, has apologized for his remarks.

“Not only did I hurt many people whom I respect, the terrible mistake that I made has undermined everything I have been working for since I began my career 31 years ago,” Dempsey said. “I hope that in time people will judge me, not for this awful mistake, but for my lifetime of words and actions, which demonstrate my respect for all people.”

Jesse Williams Settles Child Custody Dispute With Ex-Wife Aryn Drake-Lee

Jesse Williams has reached a new child custody agreement with his ex-wife, Aryn Drake-Lee.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, the Grey's Anatomy star and the real estate broker will continue to share legal custody of their daughter Sadie, 8, and son Maceo, 6, though Williams will have "tie-breaking authority over COVID-19 protocols" for the year if they cannot agree on things like vaccinations for their children.

A judge with the Los Angeles County Superior Court also granted Williams' request to modify his custodial schedule so it aligns with his work in the Broadway production of Take Me Out this spring. Per the judge's ruling, the 40-year-old actor will now have four consecutive days per month with his children in New York, with two of those days being weekends.

Though Drake-Lee's initial ask to reduce Williams' custodial time was denied, the judge did approve her request that when her ex "cancels some parenting time, he cannot later 'uncancel'" unless there is a mutual agreement in writing, according to the documents. As a result, the two parents must "meet and confer" about extracurricular activities for their children, per the docs.

"Mother should appreciate that father cannot share with her certain schedules as far in advance as she would like, and that he may not always want his time with the children to be filled up with extracurriculars," the judge's ruling read, "and father should appreciate that mother is adapting her own schedule to meet his needs, and the children deserve to have extracurricular activities that they engage in on a regular basis, not just when mom is in charge."

If the parents cannot agree, Drake-Lee holds "tie-breaking authority for one extracurricular activity at a time for each of the children" this year and can use it provided that it doesn't impede on Williams' holidays or time with the kids in New York, per the ruling.

"The parties both seek a great deal of fine-tuning in their custody and visitation orders, much of which a court is not as well equipped to handle as the parents themselves through a third party coordinator or counselor," the judge noted in court documents. "Of course, if the parties cannot agree they can come back to court."

Williams filed for divorce from Drake-Lee in April 2017 after more than four years of marriage. Later that year, a judge ruled that the pair would share joint legal custody of their children and ordered Williams to pay his ex $160,000—$100,000 of which served as an advance towards spousal and child support and $60,000 served as an advance toward her attorney fees.

In January 2018, Williams was ordered to pay Drake-Lee over $50,000 per month in spousal support, as well as split the residuals he had earned in the span of their marriage. In addition, he was also held responsible for her attorney and accounting fees. Though Williams was awarded joint physical custody of their children in March 2018, he hit back at Drake-Lee's request for more money that summer and claimed that he was already paying her too much.

Since then, the two have continued to contend over finances in court. Per People, they finalized their divorce in October 2020, agreeing to joint and legal custody of their children and that they must consult with each other before posting photos of the kids on social media.

NYC Mayor will not lift vaccine mandate for Kyrie Irving

Eric Adam‘s plan to amend New York City’s vaccine mandates will not apply to Kyrie Irving…or other city employees. According to the mayor, lifting the vaccine requirement for the Brooklyn Nets star would “send the wrong message” as he hasn’t done the same for other workers in the city.

“Listen, I want Kyrie on the court. I would do anything to get that ring,” Adams said in an interview with CNBC. “But there’s so much at stake here.”

“We want to find a way to get Kyrie on the court, but this is a bigger issue. I can’t have my city closed down again,” he continued. “It would send the wrong message just to have an exception for one player when we’re telling countless number of New York City employees, ‘If you don’t follow the rules, you won’t be able to be employed.’”

According to multiple news outlets, daily COVID-19 cases have dropped steeply within the last month. If numbers continue to decrease, Adams’ plan to remove vaccination requirements for “indoor dining, fitness and entertainment venues” in New York City will go into effect on Monday (March 7.) The mandates, however, will still apply in other cases, including the work authorization process for city employees. “All other vaccine mandates in New York City will remain in place at this time as they are, and have been, vital to protecting New Yorkers,” he said. Unfortunately, Irving, who is unvaccinated, is still not exempt from the mandate.

As fans know, Irving has been banned from home games because of his non-compliance with NYC’s vaccine mandate. While Adams agrees that the ban “doesn’t quite make sense,” he’s been leery about sending the wrong message.

“Having this city close down again keeps me up at night and the message was put in place, the rule was put in place… to start changing it now I think it would send mixed messages,” he explained. “I’m struggling with this, just to be honest with you.”

Kanye West Fires Another Divorce Attorney Ahead Of Court Hearing Against Kim

Kanye West is now onto his fourth divorce attorney, as he’s reportedly fired lawyer Chris Melcher ahead of his Wednesday court hearing against estranged wife Kim Kardashian.

According to TMZ, West, 44, let go of Melcher after their relationship “had become extremely difficult, with little communication.”

Sources told the outlet that West kept changing his mind on whether he wanted to settle things amicably with Kardashian, 41, or put up a fight – much like he did when he objected to her initial divorce demands.

West will instead be repped by attorney Samantha Spector, who recently represented Nicole Young in her divorce from producer Dr. Dre, TMZ reports.

A hearing for West and Kardashian’s ongoing divorce battle has been scheduled for Wednesday, where a judge is expected to make a decision on the reality star’s request to be declared legally single.

TMZ reports that while Kardashian is expected to call in or video chat for the hearing, it’s “highly unlikely” her rapper ex will show up in person.

Kardashian filed for divorce from West in February 2021. They share four children: North, 8, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2.

The Skims founder – who has since moved on with “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson – previously slammed West and his inability to keep a lawyer in a statement posted to her Instagram Story last month.

“Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all,” she wrote at the time, in response to West’s since-deleted IG posts.

“It saddens me that Kanye continues to make it impossible every step of the way. I wish to handle all matters regarding our children privately and hopefully he can finally respond to the third attorney he has had in the last year to resolve any issues amicably.”

Sam Elliott Rips Gay Themes In ‘Power Of The Dog,’ Calls It A ‘Piece Of S – – T’

Western film icon Sam Elliott is being spit-roasted online after railing on Jane Campion’s 12-time Oscar-nominated drama “The Power of the Dog” for including “allusions to homosexuality” and other LGBTQ themes.

The “1883” actor dropped the shocking bombshell during a recent appearance on Marc Maron’s “WTF Podcast,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

“You want to talk about that piece of s – – t?” the 77-year-old “Tombstone” star sputtered when asked for his thoughts about the provocative Netflix movie, which is a contender for the Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards.

For the uninitiated, the much-praised “The Power of the Dog” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a closeted gay rancher in 1925 Montana who’s abusive toward his new sister-in-law and her son.

Nonetheless, Elliott took umbrage with the film’s characters, who he analogized to Chippendales dancers “who wear bowties and not much else.”

“That’s what all these f – – king cowboys in that movie looked like,” the Oscar nominee ranted. “They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f – – king movie.”

At that point, Maron informed Elliott that those themes are “what the movie is about,” whereupon the “Road House” actor doubled down on his remarks.

“Where’s the Western in this Western?” Elliott asked. “I mean, Cumberbatch never got out of his f – – king chaps.

“He had two pairs of chaps — a woolly pair and a leather pair. And every f – – king time he would walk in from somewhere — he never was on a horse, maybe once — he’d walk into the f – – king house, storm up the f – – king stairs, go lay in his bed in his chaps and play his banjo,” he said. “It’s like, what the f – – k?”

The “Big Lebowski” narrator added that despite being a “brilliant director,” the New Zealand-born Campion was unfit to direct a flick set in Montana in the early 20th century.

“I love her previous work, but what the f – – k does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?” Elliott fumed, further criticizing her decision to shoot the Western in her home country.

“I just came from Texas where I was hanging out with families — not men — but families,” Elliott continued in an attempt to bolster his case that she got the cowboy lifestyle completely wrong.

“Big, long, extended, multiple-generation families that made their living and their lives were all about being cowboys,” the actor said. “And, boy, when I f – – king saw that [movie], I thought, ‘What the f – – k? Where are we in this world today?’ ”

Benedict Cumberbatch plays a sexually-conflicted rancher in the Oscar-nominated anti-Western.

Suffice it to say, Elliott’s comments didn’t sit well with progressive cinemaphiles on social media, with one tweeting, “Holy s – – t do I like Sam Elliott a lot less now.”

“This is some barely even trying to hide it homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic s – – t,” they added.

“Just in! Sam Elliott reinforces the whole message of the film in accidental endorsement of Power of the Dog,” another wrote. “Which is that cowboy culture hasn’t changed one bit and is still rife with toxic masculinity/homophobia.”

“I like Sam Elliott but someone probably needs to remind him he’s an actor from Sacramento who lives in Malibu, not an actual cowboy,” quipped one critic.

One film buff found his criticism of the movie’s New Zealand filming location hypocritical given US audiences’ love of Spaghetti Westerns — low-budget cowboy flicks filmed in Italy in the 1960s and ’70s.

“The whole homosexual thing was interesting — they stepped over the line — but Katharine and I both looked at it and thought, ‘What’s the big deal?’ ” he added.

When asked if he thought it denigrated the cowboy, Elliott responded, “I do not think it’s anti-cowboy. I have tremendous respect for Ang as a filmmaker.”

Atlanta Transwoman Wins $1.5M Lawsuit Against Cops Who Wrongly Accused Her of Selling Drugs

*A transwoman in Atlanta has won a million-dollar lawsuit against two police officers who wrongly acused her of drug trafficking.

A federal jury ordered one of the officers accused of profiling Ju’Zema Goldring to pay her $1.5 million. The case stems from Goldring’s arrest in October 2015. Her attorneys said she was walking across the street when APD officers stopped her and accused her of jaywalking.

Here’s more from 11 Alive:

As officers took her into custody, they searched her belongings and found a stress ball in her purse, according to Goldring’s attorneys. An APD officer then cut open the stress ball and tested it for cocaine, attorneys representing Goldring said. The test came back negative, however, APD still filed a charge against Goldring accusing her of trafficking cocaine, her attorneys said, alleging that officers lied about the presence of drugs.

“She consented to them cutting it (the stress ball) open because she knew it wasn’t a substance — and even that wasn’t enough,” Goldring’s attorney said.

Goldring spent nearly six months in jail. Further repeated tests for cocaine came back negative. She was later released and her charges were dismissed.

The police department insisted that the tests were false negatives.

“It was clear these officers were lying,” Goldring’s lawyer Miguel Dominguez said. “The best they were able to come with at trial is maybe they needed more training.”

Goldring took legal action against the police department and last week, a federal jury awarded her a $1.5 million verdict.

Judge William M. Ray II noted that the point system within the police department could have contributed to Goldring’s arrest.

The point system, per MadameNoire, “gives officers a certain number of points for taking different actions, like an arrest or writing a traffic ticket.”

Officer and supervisors face consequences for not getting an adequate number of points.

“The Court is concerned that such a system may create perverse incentives for officers,” Ray said in a statement.

He added, “As it turns out, it wasn’t drugs at all, but she spent nearly 6 months in the Fulton County jail based on this seemingly bogus charge. The Court hopes the APD and the City of Atlanta might consider reforming these practices.”

“If you’re going to police the citizens this way, you’ve got to be ready to compensate them when it goes wrong, and so this is the city’s first chance to make right on,” Goldring’s attorney said.

‘West Side Story’ Star Ariana DeBose to Play Calypso in Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’

“West Side Story” star Ariana DeBose has joined the cast of Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter,” an upcoming superhero action-adventure featuring Aaron Taylor Johnson as one of Spider-Man’s most deadly antagonists.

She will play Calypso, a voodoo priestess who is the on-and-off lover of Kraven. The character first appeared in “Spider-Man” comics in the early 1980s as an adversary of Marvel’s teen web-slinger. In the comics, she has the power of mind control and a costume that barely covers her body.

J.C. Chandor, who previously tackled “All Is Lost” and “Triple Frontier,” is directing “Kraven the Hunter.” The film, which also stars Russell Crowe, will be released theatrically on Jan. 13, 2023.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing, with the screenplay written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk.

DeBose is currently the favorite to win best supporting actress at this year’s Oscars, for her captivating turn as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.” Over the weekend, she took home the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role.

“It’s taken a long time for me to feel comfortable calling myself an actor. My roots come from the dance world and the Broadway stage,” she said onstage at the SAG Awards while accepting the trophy.

Prior to her big-screen breakout in “West Side Story,” DeBose was a member of the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” and landed a Tony nomination for playing the lead role in “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.” She later starred in Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of “The Prom” for Netflix, as well as the Apple TV Plus musical comedy series “Schmigadoon!”

Before immersing herself in the Spiderverse, DeBose will be seen in Matthew Vaughn’s action film “Argylle” from Apple, in which she will star opposite Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson and Dua Lipa. She will also star in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s space thriller “I.S.S.” with Chris Messina and Pilou Asbaek.

DeBose is repped by CAA, AC Management, The Lede Company and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news of DeBose’s casting

Cardi B And Offset Left A $1,400 Tip On A $3,000 Bill At An NYC Dinner

Cardi B and Offset dined at Brooklyn Chop House Monday night with their entire team and left the staff a very generous tip.

via: Uproxx: When it comes to tipping etiquette, more often than not, we hear stories about celebrities going out to dinner and tipping like crap. There’s the football player who left a meager 75 cents on a $128 bill because he didn’t get enough refills on his water, or another who thought leaving 20 cents was a good way to “make a statement.” There are also stories about when Kendall Jenner didn’t tip on a round of drinks and Tiger Woods pulling back a $5 tip to a blackjack dealer when he realized he had already tipped (on a $10,000 bet!) But you know who doesn’t suck at tipping? Cardi B and Offset.

The hip-hop power couple apparently had a kick-ass meal at NYC’s Brooklyn Chop House. They left a massive $1,400 tip on a sizable $3,000 tab, which is generous, awesome, and exemplary to say the least.

Despite its name, the restaurant is in Lower Manhattan, in between the Financial District and Chinatown. Cardi and Offset treated their team to a dinner out which according to gossip site Page Six, included dumplings and dessert. A Black-owned establishment, the couple took a photo with owner Robert “Don Pooh” Cummins, who posted it on the restaurant’s Instagram account with the clever caption “Chopping it up with @iamcardib and @offsetyrn tonight at @brooklynchophouse thank you.” Wonder how many times he uses that same pun?

Cartier Accuses Tiffany & Co. of ‘Stealing Trade Secrets’ in New Lawsuit

Cartier has sued Tiffany & Co. for allegedly “stealing trade secrets” about its jewelry.

In the suit, which the Guardian reports was filed in New York on Monday, Cartier accuses Tiffany of stealing the trade secrets in question by way of a former employee. Tiffany, specifically, is alleged to have “hired away” junior manager Megan Marino as part of a larger effort to embolden their high jewelry-focused division.

Per a separate report from Bloomberg, the suit also names Marino, who’s accused of downloading confidential Cartier info and later sharing it with fellow Tiffany employees. Marino is reported to have been fired from her new Tiffany job after the brand’s legal team was made aware of the situation. Meanwhile, Marino said in an affidavit that Tiffany was allegedly “more interested” in bringing her aboard the team as an info source than as a legitimate manager.

Complex has reached out to reps for Cartier and Tiffany & Co. for comment and will update this post accordingly. In a statement shared with Bloomberg on Monday, a Tiffany rep denied what they described as a “baseless allegation.”

As frequenters of such news may recall, Cartier and Tiffany last appeared in lawsuit-focused headlines together back in 2014. At the time, Cartier was reported to have filed a suit alleging that a former advertising director had attempted to get an employee to download confidential info, only to later (allegedly) make efforts at convincing that employee to join them at Tiffany. The former employee at the center of those allegations, however, later argued that the case should be dismissed due to the fact that no such information had been obtained or used.

Civil Rights Groups Sue Texas Governor for Criminalizing Care for Transgender Kids

Civil rights groups have sued Texas Governor Greg Abbott for allegedly violating the constitutional rights of transgender children and their parents after trying to criminalize the treatment of adolescents with gender dysphoria.

Abbott’s letter sent to the state’s child-welfare agency directed it to investigate families for child abuse if they are suspected of seeking gender-affirming care, saying it is an illegal attempt to “legislate by press release” after state lawmakers didn’t pass such a law, a pair of civil rights groups said in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Austin, Texas.

The governor “trampled on the constitutional rights of transgender children, their parents, and professionals who provide vital care to transgender children,” the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal stated in its complaint.

Abbott, who is Republican campaigning for reelection, ordered the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to look into cases of “sex change” procedures for minors, which included surgeries and puberty-blocking drugs. He also said licensed professionals who have contact with kids, including doctors, nurses, and teachers, could face criminal penalties for “failure to report such child abuse.”

Abbott posted on Twitter on Feb. 22 that his directive would be enforced, Bloomberg reported.

“They are joining a politically-motivated misinformation campaign with no consideration of medical science,” Lambda Legal Senior Counsel Paul Castillo said in a statement.

The groups filed the lawsuit on behalf of three Texas residents who are using pseudonyms to conceal their identities for protection, as well Megan Mooney, who is a Houston-based clinical psychologist, Megan Mooney.

“No family should have to fear being torn apart because they are supporting their trans child,” said Adri Perez, a policy and advocacy strategist at the ACLU of Texas.

Abbott and Paxton face challengers in the upcoming state primary vote, and limiting transgender rights is a popular topic with the committed conservatives being the ones most likely to vote.

The House of Representatives Passes Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Bill in 422 – 3 Vote

The House of Representatives has finally passed Emmett Till Antilynching Act, which would make lynching a federal hate crime.

Since 1900, lawmakers have failed to pass anti-lynching laws more than 200 times. On Monday, in a 422 – 3 vote, the Emmett Till Antilynching Act was officiated passed in the House. The Emmett Till Antilynching Act was named after 14-year-old Emmett Till was kidnapped, brutally beaten, tortured and shot in the head by white supremacists in 1955 after being accused of offending a white woman.

NBC News reports that a crime can now be prosecuted as lynching when a person tries to commit a hate crime that results in death or serious bodily injury. If found guilty, a person could serve up to 30 years in prison. Three legislators voted against the bill’s passing; those individuals include Republican Reps. Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Thomas Massie of Kentucky; and Chip Roy of Texas.

In a statement on Monday, Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., who introduced the bill, said he was just eight years old when he saw the image of Emmett’s “brutalized body.”

“That photograph shaped my consciousness as a Black man in America, changed the course of my life, and changed our nation,” said Rush. “But modern-day lynchings like the murder of Ahmaud Arbery make abundantly clear that the racist hatred and terror that fueled the lynching of Emmett Till lynching are far too prevalent in America to this day.”

Of those that have been recorded, Rush says there have been nearly 6,500 lynchings in the U.S. between 1865 and 1950. The bill now goes to to the Senate.
