Rosario Dawson for Backstage Magazine!

It happened during a street shoot for a Vibe commercial in 1994. Rosario Dawson, while batting her eyes at a long-haired grip from her East Village stoop, was approached by Larry Clark and his 21-year-old screenwriter, Harmony Korine, enthusing that they had the perfect role for her.

The character of Ruby was one of the young, promiscuous teens in “Kids,” Clark’s explosive 1995 indie that went on to be an official selection for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The 15-year-old Dawson wasn’t cast as the lead of the film, but with scene-stealing charisma, she became one of the poster girls for the feature alongside fellow New York wunderkind ChloΓ« Sevigny. When you factor in Dawson’s career longevity, it’s a plucked-from-obscurity discovery not often seen today in Hollywood.

“I got the role after I auditioned, and I really worked, like, four days on it,” she says by phone. “We all got paid $1,000. My family immediately took that $1,000, and we went on a road trip that summer and moved to Texas.”

The scene in Garland, Texas, where her father grew up, didn’t exactly foster a passion for the performing arts the way lower Manhattan might. Luckily, a year after the move, Dawson remembers, “I got a call saying, ‘Hey, we’ve been trying to find you. Where have you been? We’ve got the film edited. [We’re hosting] a midnight screening.’ Everyone lost their mind over it. Harper’s Bazaar was doing a piece, so I got flown out, and it was my first time being back in New York.”

After watching herself on the big screen, Dawson finally understood what Clark and Korine likely saw in her that day in the Village: unfakeable, innate talent and magnetism.

“I was really proud of [myself], because I knew I was a really nerdy, boring kid who was still very much a virgin and would be for several more years, but I really believed that I was this highly sexually promiscuous, wild street kid—you know, latchkey kid,” she says. “And I was a latchkey kid, but I was not behaving like her. I grew up around her. My mom was a teenage mom. I wasn’t protected from those realities; it just wasn’t my personal reality. I was able to take all of that information that I knew and channel it into this character in a really convincing way. I wanted to keep doing it.”

She decided she was going to stay in New York and sign with an agent. She called her family back in Texas to say she was planning on finding roommates and finishing high school there. “My mom and everyone were like, ‘Absolutely. We trust in you, believe in you; go for your dream.’ ” At the behest and generosity of her paternal grandmother, Dawson took a semester of acting classes at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, where she rubbed elbows with a young Hayden Christensen and Scarlett Johansson. “I’ll never forget Scarlett at 10 years old in overalls with that same exact raspy voice, and everyone going: ‘She’s one to watch.’ Same thing with Hayden.” The classes were a turning point.

“I was never able to go to acting class before because it was too expensive, but it was a very, very perfect and incredible time,” she says. “And from that, I started reading all the different books about acting, the different methods, and then had my kind of inroads into how to be serious about it.”

Dawson also credits that semester with introducing her to classmate-turned–friend and collaborator Talia Lugacy—an example of just how paramount those early years as an artist are for finding people who will grow with you from beginning to end. “You literally never know who that person is going to be in 10 or 20 years, and how those relationships that you created, just doing it for the love of it, could turn into something really valuable down the line,” she says. “All of those relationships are important.” (Dawson and Lugacy’s collaborations include the 2005 short film “Little Black Dress” and “Descent” in 2007. Next up is feature film “This Is Not a War Story,” which Lugacy wrote, directed, and stars in, with Dawson serving as an executive producer.)

“She’s an Israeli-Moroccan who was wearing this big Stanley Kubrick T-shirt, and I was like, ‘Who’s that girl?’ ” Dawson remembers. “We would sit there and we’d make little short films. And it was so great, because I got this opportunity to really get into the filmmaking process and do research and get history on different amazing directors.

“We started making a list then about who I wanted to work with—which, during that time in independent film, the people who were really shining [were] Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Danny Boyle, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau, Spike Lee—like, the dawning of independent film.”

In addition to performing his chart-topping hit “Way 2 Sexy” with Future, Drake paid homage to Cole. “I don’t know how the f**k you pulled it off, but thank you for being the first person to bring us back to arenas so we could do some shows for these people,” he told his “In the Morning” collaborator.

Earlier in the week, Cole dropped “Heaven’s EP.” On his freestyle to Drake’s “Pipe Down,” he raps, “Some people say that I’m running third / They threw the bronze at me / Behind Drake and Dot / Yeah, them ni**as is superstars to me.”

Drake addressed the lyrics, telling Cole that he is one of the greatest to ever do it. “I gotta say this just ’cause, I don’t always wanna have like a heartfelt moment when we’re on stage together,” he said. “I just want you to understand something—you are genuinely, without a doubt, one of the greatest rappers to ever touch the mic. Michael K. Williams's Cause Of Death Was 'Acute Intoxication,' Medical Examiner Says!

The unexpected death this month of actor Michael K. Williams, best known for his roles in HBO series The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and Lovecraft Country, was caused by drugs, the New York City medical examiner said Friday.

The 54-year-old Williams, who was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment on Sept. 6, died from "acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine." The office ruled that the manner of death was accidental.

A rep for Williams did not immediately respond to Yahoo Entertainment's request for comment.

Over the years, Williams had noted his struggles with drug use, particularly during the time when he was playing his breakthrough role of Omar Little in HBO's critically acclaimed crime drama The Wire, from 2002 to 2008. He described this period as one of doing drugs "in scary places with scary people."

"I was playing with fire," Williams told the New Jersey Star-Ledger in August 2012. "It was just a matter of time before I got caught and my business ended up on the cover of a tabloid or I went to jail or, worse, I ended up dead. When I look back on it now, I don't know how I didn’t end up in a body bag."

He said that he "got so sick and tired of this charade," of hiding his drug use.

"No one who was in my circle, who knew me as Mike, was allowing me to get high. I had to slip away to do drugs," he said. "I had to hide it. I'd be gone for days at a time. I was lonely in that part of my life. I was broke, broken and beat up. Exhausted. Empty. I finally said, 'I can't do this no more.' I didn't want to end up dead."

In a July 2016 episode of Fresh Air, he told NPR's Terry Gross that he eventually turned to a New Jersey church for help. He said that he had learned to turn to prayer and meditation when he needed to separate himself from his character — something that hadn't always been easy for him.

"[When] The Wire and the character of Omar ended, I had zero tools, personally speaking, in how to deal with letting that go," he said. "I wasn't going around robbing people or anything stupid like that, but I definitely wore that dark energy that Omar was — he was a dark soul, a tortured soul — and I just ... lived in that and that's what people was attracted to. ... The lines got blurred."

Following Williams's death, some of the many people he'd worked with over his more than 25 years in the entertainment industry, such as Kerry Washington and Jurnee Smollett, paid tribute.

Obama Presidential Center Groundbreaking Ceremony Finally Set For Next Week!

Construction is finally set to commence at the site of former President Barack Obama’s Presidential Center in Chicago. The Chicago Tribune reports both Barack and Michelle Obama will join Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Mayor Lori Lightfoot and others at the ceremonial groundbreaking event Tuesday (Sept. 29).

Obama specifically selected the South Side’s Jackson Park as the site of his presidential center to reinvigorate the neighborhood and as a nod to where his rise in politics began. It’s been five years, however, since he chose the area for the ambitious venue. Setbacks and a federal regulatory review process pushed back its opening.

Barack Obama to celebrate 60th birthday with scaled-back party

“Michelle and I could not be more excited to break ground on the Obama Presidential Center in the community that we love,” Barack Obama said in a video posted Friday (Sept. 24). “With your help, we can make the center a catalyst for economic opportunity, a new world-class destination on the South Side and a platform for young people to drive change. So let’s celebrate Chicago.”

In an interview with The Tribune, Obama Foundation President Valerie Jarrett said next week’s ceremony also represents a milestone for Chicago’s South Side. “I spent my entire childhood and adulthood seeing the South Side overlooked,” Jarrett said. “For generations now, the South Side of Chicago hasn’t seen the kind of investment and attention that I think it deserves. So, long overdue, and I couldn’t be more proud that it is President and Mrs. Obama who decided to make this major investment in the South Side of Chicago.”

Barack Obama says “white resistance” stopped him from pursuing reparations during presidency

The Obama Foundation estimates the presidential center will generate $3.1 billion in economic impact for Cook County and bring nearly 700,000 visitors to the South Side each year to stimulate economic growth. There will be a museum, a library, a lawn for social gatherings and a children’s play area within the space.

The groundbreaking event will be livestreamed at 1:30 p.m. ET Tuesday (Sept. 29) via obama.org.

Body Found In LaSalle County Is Jelani Day!

Illinois State University graduate student Jelani Day went missing Aug. 24. His body was discovered Sept. 4 in Peru, Ill.

Authorities said Thursday the body found three weeks ago near Peru, Ill., is that of missing Illinois State University graduate student Jelani Day of Bloomington.

Day, 25, had been missing since Aug. 24, after last being spotted that morning at ISU and at a store in Bloomington. His car was found two days later in Peru, about an hour north of Bloomington-Normal. The body was found Sept. 4 in the Illinois River floating just east of the Illinois 251 bridge, about a mile from where the car was found.

It took nearly three weeks for authorities to identify the body. The LaSalle County coroner did that Thursday, through forensic dental identification and DNA testing and comparison.

Bloomington Police public information officer John Fermon said during a virtual news conference the cause of Day’s death is still unknown. He did not say whether police had any persons of interest in the case.

“We can all agree that it was very suspicious, just unlike him,” Fermon said. “It was one of those things, was it foul play or not?”

Fermon said the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t determined whether it is a homicide investigation at this point. The sheriff’s office has not responded to a request for comment.

Day's case has received extensive coverage in central Illinois, and recently went national when Day's mother protested that her son's death was not receiving enough resources compared to another missing person case that drew national attention.

The FBI is now listed among the agencies investigating the matter. Fermon said he didn’t have a specific date when the FBI was brought in, but he indicated many people in the community pushed for more information on the case.

“Jelani was such a great person and had so many great friends that people were reaching out wanting to help,” he said.

Fermon did not discuss evidence in the case, but he confirmed police received a tip that brought them to the Illinois River where his body was found.

“Imagine searching an entire city is difficult, but we got some information to give us that second search,” he said, adding he hopes Thursday's identification can provide some closure for the family.

“I couldn’t put myself in their shoes. It was just tough,” Fermon said. “I’d want to know the answers, good or bad, to start the grieving process, so I think it’s good in that aspect.”

Fermon said he understands the Day family’s frustration that the case didn’t get much attention at first.

“A lot of our high-risk missing persons just here in the city don’t get the attention (they) deserve either,” Fermon said. “I’m happy this got out there. We’ll take the criticism.”

Fermon could not address the reasons why it took nearly three weeks for a positive identification, but he indicated there is a backlog at the Illinois State Police crime lab. The State Police Division of Forensic Services has declined to comment, citing its policy on open cases.

Day's family issued a statement Thursday afternoon on social media. They said "now we need to find out (what happened to Jelani Day)." The family said it's hired a private investigator to assist the police.

"This week we learned new evidence has been discovered and police are working new leads related to Jelani’s disappearance. This case is not closed and the investigation is not over," the family wrote.

ISU president Terri Goss Kinzy said she is deeply saddened by the news and details, adding details of how the campus community comes together to celebrate Jelani's life will be forthcoming.

"His family and friends are foremost in our thoughts during this difficult time and we extend our deepest condolences," said Kinzy. "Let us remember to take care of one another, check in on one another, and convey our feelings of love or loss to those close to us."

Kinzy thanked everyone who helped raise awareness of the case.

"As members of the Redbird family, please remember that you are not alone. Students seeking support should not hesitate to reach out at any time to Student Counseling Services," said Kinzy.

Fermon said he understands this case has the ISU community on high alert.

“Are there any specific dangers that we can notify ISU PD or the university specific steps to take? No, but of course always be vigilant, always be aware of your surroundings,” he said.

Anyone with any information about Day’s case should contact the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office at (815) 433-2161

Rihanna's Savage x Fenty fashion show called out for featuring non-Black women with braids!

Social media users are questioning why Rihanna’s fashion show chose to style these stars in braids.

The third Savage x Fenty fashion show dropped on Amazon on Friday, September 24. While many people have praised Rihanna’s lingerie show for its celebration of all kinds of bodies, as well as the show’s creative direction, some people wondered why the show had Vanessa Hudgens and Emily Ratajkowski sport braids during their scenes. Neither Hudgens nor Ratajkowski are Black women, and many believe the choice of hairstyle is an appropriation of Black culture.

One user tweeted, “Loving everything about this show except why are white women in braids??? Rihanna?? What’s good!? I need answers.”

Another added, “Rihanna really loves putting non black ppl in braids for her fenty whatever show and then call it ‘mad ethnic right now,’” while a third wrote, “Not Rihanna letting nonblack ppl wear braids for her lil underwear line fashion show.”

A TikToker who made a video review of the show even joked of the braids, “I’m not even going to say anything because I know what’s going to be said.”

Over the years, many stars — from Shay Mitchell to the Kardashians — have been called out for appropriating Black culture with their hairstyles. The controversy stems from the fact that non-Black celebrities are celebrated for a choice of hairstyle created by and typically worn by Black people, while the Black community has not received the same accolades or credit for the look — and is sometimes even criticized for the same style choices. (For example, when Zendaya wore dreadlocks on the red carpet in 2015, a fashion commenter said it looked like her hair smelled “like weed.”)

However, what’s unique about this situation is the fact that Rihanna — a Black woman — likely had the final creative word in how these women were styled, which is part of the reason why the internet is so perplexed.

Rihanna, Hudgens, and Ratajkowski have not responded to the controversy.

Friday night, Jordan was at a bar in Arizona when he slipped and fell inside the bar hitting his head. They say Jordan was becoming combative towards bar workers and security after the fall because they were trying to escort him out of the bar to revive medical attention. 'Jagged Little Pill' Broadway Stars Accuse Producers of Transphobia'to the Trans and Non-Binary Community'!

Two former cast members of the Broadway jukebox musical Jagged Little Pillhave accused the show’s producers of harm “to the trans and non-binary community.”

via Vulture:

Producers released a statement on September 17 addressing the long controversy around the role of Jo — who was clearly a nonbinary character in the show’s Boston previews, but whose gender became ambiguous on Broadway, with the cisgender actor who played the role telling Vulture in 2020 that “Jo never was written as anything other than cis.” In the statement confirming that Jo is a nonbinary character, the producers wrote, “We want to recognize the reasonable and deeply felt upset around the issues of transparency and accountability and the character of Jo,” and outlined a plan to improve the show’s portrayal of trans and nonbinary identity. Yet in the days following that statement, trans actors involved with the Alanis Morissette jukebox musical have further criticized their interactions with the transgender community. “They don’t see the absolute PAIN this causes! i have PTSD!!!!!!,” Iris Menas, a nonbinary actor who was formerly the understudy for Jo, tweeted after producers released their statement. “Be aware that this is NOT enough,” zie added in another tweet. “We are asking for basic care and we are gaslit.”

Nora Schell, another nonbinary actor formerly involved in the production, tweeted that the production “failed me, and perpetuated violence against a mentally ill black femme” on September 7, after attending the Transgender March on Broadway. Then, days after the production statement, on September 24, Schell tweeted that they were “intimidated, coerced and forced by multiple higher ups to put off CRITICAL AND NECESSARY surgery to remove growths from my vagina that were making me anemic” when the show was in previews.

In a lengthy statement, Schell claimed that they had issues communicating with the stage-management team around their polycystic ovary syndrome diagnosis, and that the stage manager never told the creative team about Schell’s diagnosis, after previously saying they would. Schell also said after they fainted from anemia due to the condition, the stage manager and a “main higher-up” pressured them to perform that night; they later collapsed on their way to a dressing room and were allowed to leave. Schell said their gynecologist recommended a surgery after that day, but they were “effectively coerced” to wait for the surgery, even performing on Good Morning America the day before. The management team also, according to Schell, said they would not be able to take paid leave to recover from the surgery. “It is certainly the most alarming, fundamentally wrong, and DANGEROUS incident I experienced,” Schell wrote of the event. “I’m still dealing with the consequences of waiting to get this surgery.” Schell later added on Twitter that the stage manager involved was an Actors’ Equity Association vice-president.

Representatives for Jagged Little Pill and Actors’ Equity did not reply to requests for comment, nor did the apparent stage manager at the time, Ira Mont. But shortly after Schell’s statement, Tony-nominated actor Celia R. Gooding, who played Frankie, tweeted that the show’s issues with the trans community played into their decision to leave the production. “I cannot ignore the harm Jagged has done to the trans and non-binary community, including cast members on stage, off stage, and behind the scenes in the production-making process,” Gooding wrote, adding that they will perform for the final time at the Tonys. “I believe it will be in my best personal interest to focus more on work that I can align myself with emotionally and morally, just as Frankie would.”

The controversy comes amid focus on Jagged Little Pill ahead of September 26’s Tony Awards, where the musical is the most-nominated show and likely to be among the most-awarded. Weeks after, on October 21, the show will formally return to Broadway. The actions outlined in the producers’ statement on the role of Jo include hiring a new dramaturgical team that includes transgender members and members of color “to revisit and deepen the script,” and promising to “prioritize auditioning actors for the role [of Jo] who are on gender journeys or understand that experience personally” in the future. Yet Lauren Patten, who originated the role on Broadway, plans to return in the role in October. “I am profoundly sorry for the harm I caused,” she wrote on Instagram following the production statement, alongside a video conversation with Shakina Nayfack, a trans actor. Patten continued, “It is my deepest hope for Jo to be a character that can be claimed and owned by folks of many queer identities — butch and masc women, nonbinary and genderqueer folks, trans men, and many more.” When Nayfack asked Patten why she didn’t leave the role, Patten cited the “closure” of performing in the role again after the COVID-19 shutdown, along with Jo’s identity not being “cut and dried.”

In the days since the production statement, trans people have continued to criticize Patten’s involvement as Jo. “Though she talks about being a masc of center queer woman, Lauren very explicitly says ‘I am not trans’ and calls herself ‘a cis person.’ Therefore, in my opinion, there is no justification for her continuing to play the role of Jo. Period,” Christian Lewis, a theater critic, tweeted. “This discredits so much of the statement from yesterday,” they added in another tweet. Gooding also seemed to reference the casting decision in her own statement, writing that trans cast members “are owed space to exist and perform free of transphobia and the opportunity to tell their own stories, just as I have over the years.”

Vicki Gunvalson Reportedly Told ‘Housewives’ They Would ‘Die’ from COVID-19 Vaccine!

Vicki Gunvalson is reportedly a staunch anti-vaxxer and made her stance against the COVID-19 vaccine known while filming Season 2 of “The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.”

via Page Six:

We’re told that the “Real Housewives of Orange County” alum, 59, shocked her castmates by constantly fighting with them about the jab — and got into particularly heated arguments with former “Real Housewives of New York City” star Dorinda Medley, a noted vaccine advocate.

“She wouldn’t stop fighting about the shot and really got into it with Dorinda. Vicki told Dorinda that everyone who got the vaccine is going to die,” said an insider, adding that Gunvalson’s point of view has “nothing to do with religious reasons.”

“She just kept saying, ‘Everyone who got the vaccine is going to die!’”

According to the CDC, FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines are safe and known to maximize protection from emerging variants — including Delta — while possibly preventing the virus from spreading to others.

Season 2 of the “Real Housewives” all-stars spin-off, which took place at Medley’s Blue Stone Manor estate in The Berkshires, took a total of eight days to shoot and wrapped just days ago, a second source close to production told Page Six.

The sophomore season — which stars Gunvalson, Medley, 56, Tamra Judge, Phaedra Parks, Brandi Glanville, Taylor Armstrong, Eva Marcille and Jill Zarin — is expected to premiere on NBC’s Peacock streaming service in 2022.

Of all the fracas that took place in “The Berzerkshires,” Gunvalson’s verbal tussles with Medley about the vaccine “certainly stood out the most,” a third insider said. “It will likely be a big storyline. The show is going to be incredible. They captured great stuff.”

Another source said that “Real Housewives of Atlanta” alum Marcille, 36, did her best to mediate the drama — though it’s unclear if she was successful in brokering peace between Gunvalson and Medley.

Page Six has reached out to Bravo for comment, while a rep for Gunvalson could not immediately be reached.

Prior to filming “RHUGT,” Gunvalson shut down a Daily Mail report that she had contracted COVID-19.

“You’re not writing a story about an unknown cold I have,” she told the outlet earlier this month. “My medical information is not public.”

Gunvalson also seemingly dodged New York City’s vaccine mandate while dining indoors with fellow “RHOC” alum Judge, 54, this week. Despite a citywide rule that patrons must provide vaccination cards with proof of ID, the two were seen drinking mask-less inside a Big Apple establishment.

Gunvalson previously told the Daily Mail that she has not gotten the vaccine due to “underlying issues.”

“I cannot get the vaccine,” she elaborated. “I’ve got blood clots. I have a health exemption.”

The second installment of the anticipated “Real Housewives” mashup will mark Gunvalson’s return to reality TV after exiting “Orange County” in 2019 following 14 seasons. The self-proclaimed “OG of the OC” left the franchise as a “friend of” but originated the show in 2006 alongside Kimberly Bryant, Jo De La Rosa, Jeana Keough and Lauri Peterson.

‘Completely Drunk’ Nicholas Cage Tossed Out Of Upscale Vegas Restaurant!

Completely drunk? Leaving Las Vegas part 2? Is Nicholas Cage preparing for a sequel to his Oscar-winning movie?

Last Monday, Nicholas Cage was seen at Lawry’s Prime Rib in Las Vegas ‘completely drunk,’ according to an eyewitness. In a video clip, a man is heard saying, “Nicolas Cage here is a little f—ked up.”

Cage is seen sitting on a couch, barefoot and unshaved, wearing leopard-print pants and a black shirt.

A guest at the restaurant says that initially, everyone thought Nicholas was “a homeless man completely drunk and being rowdy.”

“He was in a really bad state and was walking around shoeless. Staff told us he had been downing shots of tequila and 1980 Macallan whiskey, another witness said.

The clip ends with Nicholas seemingly trying to make his way back into the bar trying to confront the staff member who tossed him out.

This behavior comes as no surprise as Cage, who lost his mother earlier this year, has previously dealt with issues pertaining to alcohol. In March 2019, the actor had his marriage annulled. According to Nick, “he was too drunk to understand the full impact of his actions.” And in a 2018 interview, Nicholas admits throwing himself into his work to not “self-destruct.”

“Then I’m just going to sit and order two bottles of red wine and dissolve, and I don’t want to be that person, so I have to work,” he said
