The Daily Buzz For July 18

Dave Chappelle Interviews Kendrick Lamar for Interview Magazine
In 2003, Chappelle’s Show made its debut and Kendrick Lamar (then known as K-Dot) released his debut mixtape Y.H.N.I.C. Fourteen years later, Chappelle has interviewed Lamar for Interview magazine. The conversation finds them touching on the few things they have in common, including their love of hip-hop, being black and famous, and that revelatory trip to Africa. Lamar specifically points to his trip to South Africa as his I made it moment.

“I went to South Africa—Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg—and those were definitely the ‘I’ve arrived’ shows,” Lamar says. “Outside of the money, the success, the accolades … This is a place that we, in urban communities, never dream of. We never dream of Africa. Like, ‘Damn, this is the motherland.'”
Lamar isn’t as candid as he was in his interview with Big Boy last month, but seeing two geniuses exchange words are worth the read. Catch the interview here. Lamar is still on his DAMN. tour while Chappelle is preparing for his 14-night residency at Radio City Music Hall next month.

#RHoA: Kandi Burruss Can't Wait for NeNe Leakes to Make Her 'RHOA' Comeback
NeNe Leakes is making her big comeback on the The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast — and Kandi Burruss has a good reason to be excited.
The mother-of-two was unwillingly the center of attention last season, and with the return of NeNe along with former foe Kim Zolciak, Kandi is more than willing to share the drama with the ladies.

"Bringing the blasts from the past back into the future, it's going to be crazy, I'm sure. I'm just hoping that the craziness is not on me," she told Life & Style exclusively at the Babypalooza at Blogger Bash in NYC. "C'mon now, give me a break this year. Hopefully, it won't be so over the top dealing with me."
Last season, Kandi, 41, was wrongly accused by co-star Porsha Williams of planning to drug her to bring her home to her "sex dungeon" for a rendezvous with husband Todd Tucker. However, during the explosive reunion episode, it came to light that Southern belle Phaedra Parks was the one behind the malicious rumor.

"Since NeNe's been gone, I was the one that took a lot of the heat, different drama, you know, and I can not wait for her to help relieve some of this," she said with a laugh. "Relieve the pressure."

Alledgly NeNe is returning to RHOA with the biggest paycheck in network history — a whopping $2.5 million.
"The suits at Bravo are willing to pay big money to get the best cast,” said the insider. “NeNe has already declared that she expects to be making more money than Kim and would absolutely not come back otherwise.”
And with Kenya Moore's surprise new husband, we have a feeling Season 10 is going to be the best season ever!

#HIPHOPNEWS: Lauryn Hill Says There Is No Fugees Reunion in spite of unreleased Track!
The Fugees are back? SIKE…NOT!

On Saturday (July 15), Hot 97 premiered “The Ish,” claiming it was a new song from the trio of Lauryn Hill, Pras, and Wyclef Jean. Since the group hasn’t released a new album in over two decades, fans were thrilled with the prospects.
But shortly after the song made its rounds, L-Boogie fired off a tweet to dispel the reunion rumors. “The ‘new’ Fugees song is indeed an old track played around with back in the day in the lab,” she wrote. “Not sure who leaked it, but I have my suspicions.”

It’s unclear when the song was made, but Pras’ verse likely came after 2014. In the song, he raps about a 2014 interview that he conducted with CNN: “Did an interview with CNN, North Korea crisis / I be speaking the truth so they ain’t advertise it.”
The Fugees have not released a new album since 1996’s multi-platinum project, The Score. Since then, there have been on-again-off-again rumors of a reunion.
In 2007, Pras said that a reunion was off the table due to Hill. “We went in the studio and recorded a couple records that were incredible,” he said at the time. “But, to put it nicely, it’s dead. Me and [Wyclef Jean], we on the same page, but Lauryn [Hill] is in her zone, and I’m fed up with that shit. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give, and she’s running on some bullshit? I’m a fan of Lauryn’s, but I can’t respect that.”
That same year, Pras said that he would likely never work with Hill again. “Before I work with Lauryn Hill again, you will have a better chance of seeing Osama Bin Laden and [George W.] Bush in Starbucks having a latte, discussing foreign policies, before there will be a Fugees reunion,” he told AllHipHop. “At this point I really think it will take an act of God to change her, because she is that far out there.”

However, in 2011, Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis told Rap-Up that he still thought a reunion could happen. “I believe there will be a day when the Fugees get together, but everyone in the group’s gotta be ready,” he said. “The Fugees are definitely going to get back together. The time will come. You’ve gotta wait, man.”

Until that time comes, listen to “The Ish” HERE

The model, 31, and the "Surefire" singer, 38, shared a series of stunning photos from their getaway on Instagram on Saturday, July 15. "We had the most beautiful, wonderful time in Bali," Teigen captioned one shot of herself and Legend dressed in traditional Balinese garb. "Como Shambhala, my body and mind have never felt so clear. Thank you for getting me to move again (first time since I was 8 months pregnant and Luna is ummmm 15 months old) and giving me some much-needed body and nutrition schooling! Wendy Williams says she Won't Be To Returning To Radio: "I don’t have the strength."
Wendy Williams has made it very clear that she is not a fan of dallying or being lazy. The 53-year-old conversationalist has been working diligently to push her riveting talk show, The Wendy Williams Show, to the next level, but some may be unaware that she originally received her start in radio!

Williams has been featured in National Radio Hall of Fame, been nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards, has had the opportunity of meeting/interviewing a plethora of celebrities/entertainers, launched a clothing line via HSN, and much more. As Williams approaches the ninth season of her syndicated talk show, the entertainer thought it would be the right time to get digital. The wife and mother introduced two mobile apps back in June. One app called WenMoji features Williams, but in interactive emoji form. While the other, Wendy Digital features the latest news in pop culture, and doing regular things.

Recently, Williams stopped by Sway’s Universe dishing on her two new apps, her relationship with Diddy, and why she’s not returning to radio. Check out a few excerpts below.

On the drugs people do today:
"I think the kids these days take worse stuff than we did."

On of her new apps:
"So I have two apps. One, WenMoji. It’s my image, doing things. There are several of them on there. I literally designed them so that you can have a conversation with somebody without using words. It’s all original. Now, the Wendy Digital is when you get the reporters reporting the hot topics. But one of the things particularly endeared to me is my “Suddenly Wendy” area. Suddenly you hit the button and you see something you wouldn’t expect."
"I’m in the backyard playing with my dogs, next thing you know, I’m in the basement digging in the crates. Looking in old school things like that. Personal videos that have nothing to do with a show bra and some eyelashes. You can go to the Apple iOS store and Android Play store."

On how she feels about the apps overall:
"I’m really proud of it because my son thinks we’re cool. He told me, ‘Mom, Facebook? Really? Nobody uses Facebook anymore. That’s why you’re corny.’”"

On how she became a business woman:
"Well, who’s going to pay my bills? Who grew up rich in this room? I don’t regret the 20’s. Those were very important years. Those years need to be out of your system in order to manage business as an adult. And so for me, no, when I got into radio I figured I’d be a mid-day radio personality."

On her relationship with Diddy:
"For me, Puff coming and representing the height of the Forbes list. The number one entertainer, not rapper entertainer. He beat Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt. He is number one. That’s my era. I helped him do Bad Boy. We were all in the trenches together at a particular time. Somebody can try to do you in, but the power of forgiveness, and the power of going on and making it. I’ve always been motivated by haters, including my parents. I appreciate Puff. And I appreciate that I don’t have to call him Diddy."

On if she would return to radio:
"I don’t have the strength. Even though the show [The Wendy Williams Show] is only one hour, my clothing line at HSN, I got my production company. And now I’m with Live Nation."

On what she loves about The Wendy Williams Show:
"I enjoy the various artists and entertainers that we have on our show. It’s one of the things that make us special from all the other talk shows – with all respect to my peers. You’re not going to see Billy Ray [Cyrus] one day then Lamar [Odom] the next day. And then LaLa [Anthony] talking about Melo and what all is transpiring in her life. You’re not going to see a man in a full wig on any other show, but my show. It’s a ridiculous show and it is the ride of my life. I love it!"

OH NO! Parents: R. Kelly Holding Our Daughters in Sex-Obsessed, Abusive ‘Cult’
A bombshell BuzzFeed News report quotes several sets of parents claiming their daughters are being held against their will in a sex-obsessed, abusive “cult" by legendary R&B singer R. Kelly. Three former members of Kelly’s entourage also spoke to the outlet, confirming the parents’ claims of the singer’s cult-like and predatory behavior—one is quoted as saying “[Kelly] is a master at mind control.... He is a puppet master.”

According to parents and the former crew members, Kelly: keeps a collection of young women at his homes in Atlanta and Chicago; replaces their cell phones with ones specifically used to communicate with him; requires they call him “daddy” and ask permission to leave their residence; films their sexual encounters with him; and punishes them verbally and physically when they break his “rules” such as appearing remotely flirtatious towards other men. The daughter of one set of parents have attempted to contact their child—now 21 years old—for two years but have been rebuffed by her claims that she is in a consenting relationship and is not being held against her will.

IM MEMORIAM: Horror Master George A. Romero and Oscar-Winning Actor Martin Landau Have Died
Film fans are reeling tonight from the losses of two certified Hollywood legends: beloved horror filmmaker George A. Romero and Oscar-winning character actor Martin Landau.

Romero all but single-handedly created modern zombie horror via his iconic 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. An error in the film’s copyright filing put it into the public domain, doing wonders for its visibility but not for Romero’s pocketbook. However, he turned that influential film into a series of “Dead” stories, including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Land of the Dead; in between those films, he directed the cult faves The Crazies, Martin, Knightriders, and Monkey Shines, as well as the Stephen King collaborations Creepshow and The Dark Half. King tweeted Sunday night:

Sad to hear my favorite collaborator–and good old friend–George Romero has died. George, there will never be another like you.
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) July 16, 2017

Filmmaker Jordan Peele, who frequently acknowledged the echoes of Night of the Living Dead’s mixture of social commentary and horror in his recent hit Get Out, also paid tribute on Twitter:

Romero started it. pic.twitter.com/i4dnxi8EFV
— Jordan Peele (@JordanPeele) July 16, 2017

Romero died Sunday, according to a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times, following a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.” He was 77.

Martin Landau was one of the last remaining veterans of Hollywood’s Golden Age, a consummate professional who cut his teeth on the stage and live television before bowing on the silver screen in 1959, with the one-two punch of Lewis Milestone’s Pork Chop Hill and Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. He worked steadily, mostly in supporting roles, in all three mediums through the next three decades, becoming best known for his work on the original television version of Mission: Impossible.

But Landau (rather unexpectedly) flourished in his later years, beginning with an Oscar-nominated supporting performance in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1988 film Tucker: The Man and His Dream. He scored another nomination the following year, for his brilliant and complex turn as a morally challenged adulterer in Woody Allen’s masterpiece Crimes and Misdemeanors; he finally won the award five years later, for his wonderful turn as Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.

Landau died Saturday at 89, according to Variety. He recently appeared on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast for a wide-ranging talk about his career on stage and screen.
