Shea Serrano’s best-selling book The Rap Yearbook will be expanded into a six-part docu-series event as part of AMC’s original nonfiction programming in 2018 as announced earlier this morning in New York. The project’s executive producers include Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter of The Roots fame, alongside Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney.
The working title of the documentary series thus far is AMC Visionaries: Rap Yearbook, and will add to a slate of similar offerings from the cable network.
From today’s press announcement:
One of the first installments of “AMC Visionaries: Rap Yearbook” (working title) is to be executive produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter (Passyunk Productions), Shawn Gee (Philly Films), Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney and Stacey Offman (Jigsaw Productions). The six-part series is slated to premiere on AMC in 2018. This is an expansion of the network’s nonfiction programming slate, which includes the previously announced projects “AMC Visionaries: Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics,” featuring interviews with Stan Lee, Patty Jenkins, Lynda Carter, Kevin Smith and Todd McFarlane, and “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” featuring interviews with Paul W. Anderson, Roland Emmerich, Paul Verhoeven, Bryan Singer, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sigourney Weaver, Keanu Reeves and Zoe Saldana, among many others.
“AMC Visionaries: Rap Year Book,” based on Shea Serrano’s New York Times best-selling book The Rap Yearbook, debates, deconstructs and illuminates the most important moments and songs from the biggest years in the history of hip=hop. Each episode is centered on the story of one key song and features a special guest MC as well as a select group of core contributors including legendary rap artists, acclaimed music experts and other fresh voices. The series gives viewers a deeper understanding of what hip-hop is all about by diving into the music and its history. It’s a multi-layered exploration of what was going on in the streets, on the airwaves, and in the lives of the people who created the songs that made hip-hop one of the most important music genres in the world.
An official date for the documentary series has yet to be announced.

Trump ousts Scaramucci as Communications director
President Donald Trump has removed Anthony Scaramucci as communications director, a little more than a week after the former financier was named to the post, the White House said on Monday.
The change came at the request of new chief of staff John Kelly, who started Monday, two White House officials said. It was not clear whether Scaramucci would take on a new role after leaving the communications job, nor was it immediately apparent who would take over the position.
“Anthony Scaramucci will be leaving his role as White House Communications Director,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. “Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best.”
Sanders told reporters Monday afternoon that Scaramucci has no role in the administration “at this time,” but she refused to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his departure.
“I’m not going to get into the process tick-tock,” Sanders said at the press briefing. “Look, as we’ve said several times before, what matters most to us is not who’s employed in the White House but who’s employed in the rest of the country.”
Scaramucci was expected to announce his new communications team Monday afternoon, but he was instead informed of the decision to remove him that morning in Kelly’s office. Scaramucci was not present when senior staff were told of the change, a White House official said. Another senior aide said the move came after discussions over the weekend. There was “no way” Scaramucci could work with Kelly, the senior aide said.
“Kelly is already changing the culture here,” said another White House aide. As the news broke, Kelly was spotted in the White House’s East Room for a ceremony, chatting with other senior officials.
Scaramucci’s brief tenure brought turmoil to the West Wing, including the exits of press secretary Sean Spicer and former chief of staff Reince Priebus. Scaramucci had tried unsuccessfully to get a White House job earlier in the year, but he settled temporarily for a position at the U.S. Export-Import Bank.
His time as communications director seemed to start smoothly, with a friendly on-camera appearance in the White House briefing room on July 21, the day his new position was announced. Spicer’s tenure had been marked by combative exchanges with reporters, and the briefings were largely moved off camera until Scaramucci took over.
But Scaramucci quickly ramped up the drama by threatening to fire “everybody” in the White House press office if leaks to reporters did not stop. On Tuesday, he told POLITICO he planned to fire a press aide — but after he made the move public, it was delayed until the aide, Michael Short, resigned later that day.
Scaramucci also was widely criticized for a profanity-laced tirade last week in a conversation with a New Yorker reporter.
VMAs Moonman Goes Gender Neutral!
MTV is completely doing away with gender at this year’s VMAs (Video Music Awards).
First, they dropped gender specific categories like “Best Female” and “Best Male” to make it the “Best” whoever.
Now, they’ve gone a step further to erase gender by making their signature Moonman award the “Moon Person” award.
Via Rolling Stone: “Why should it be a man?” MTV president Chris McCarthy told theNew York Times. “It could be a man, it could be a woman, it could be transgender, it could be nonconformist.”
The move comes after MTV eliminated gender-specific categories at both their refurbished MTV Movie & TV Awards and the upcoming Video Music Awards; the network replaced Best Male Video and Best Female Video with the new Artist of the Year award.
At the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the Best Actor in a Show and Best Actor in a Movie categories included both male and female nominees, with Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown and Beauty and the Beast‘s Emma Watson winning the awards.
“The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience,” Watson said during her acceptance speech. “Acting is about the ability to put yourself into someone else’s shoes – and that doesn’t have to be separated into two different categories.”
