The definition of a gamechanger. Since emerging on our screen in TV comedy Black-ish seven years ago, Yara Shahidi has continuously used her voice for change – raising awareness of everything from racism to female education. As she adds another award to her list of achievements: GLAMOUR’s Women of the Year New Gen Gamechanger, she opens up to Josh Smith about a year like no other for social change.
Sitting down with 21-year-old Yara Shahidi is like having an audience with Yoda – she is that wise; it’s not everyday you hear Einstein quotes being dropped into conversation.
When I first met her she was 19, in New York promoting her debut movie in a leading role The Sun Is Also A Star – the story of a girl attempting to fight her unjust deportation. Then, she spoke powerfully about the racist micro-agressions she experienced every day. This commitment to using her platform to discuss the ‘difficult’ topics (she has 5.7 million Instagram followers) has continued to fuel Yara, and has been ever present in her life – both on and off screen – since she made her debut aged 13 in the Golden Globe winning comedy, Black-ish, playing Zoey, the eldest daughter of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Rainbow Johnson. Now with her own spin-off Grown-ish in its third season, the shows have continually navigated discussing race-related topics with a balance of humour, too.
Alongside Yara’s acting career – she recently landed the role of Tinker Bell in Disney’s remake of Peter Pan – she has enrolled at Harvard University after Michelle Obama sent a letter of recommendation (they have continuously appeared together promoting girls’ education), founded her own platform, Eighteen x 18, that seeks to uplift a new generation of voters to ensure their voices are heard, and in collaboration with Young Women's Leadership Network of New York, she has also created Yara’s Club, providing online mentorship in the hope of eradicating poverty. It’s no wonder Oprah touts her as a future president.
And her family have been alongside her every step of the way. Her mother Keri Salter Shahidi was a model before she became Yara’s business partner in 2020 when the pair launched their own production company 7th Sun and signed a deal with ABC to produce new shows, steeped in her cause to change the television landscape. Her Iranian-American father, Afshin Shahidi is a photographer who even shot Yara’s GLAMOUR UK cover from their home.
Here, Yara reflects on how far she has come and how much further we need to go as a society we need to go in the pursuit of equality…
From the moment you won your role in Black-ish aged 13 to now at 21, how different do you feel? How has growing up on a public platform shaped you?
It's really a matter of just seven years of growing up. What is really markedly different and so special about the people behind Black-ish is they have embraced my growing up and into different spaces creatively, which I feel very lucky.
Starting in panels at the age of 14 because Black-ish was covering topics of police brutality, and the election and so many other cultural touch points, I don't think many 14-year-olds are given the space to really be heard on these large topics. That was instrumental to me then, being able to say, ‘I love the fact that I have a voice and a platform,’ and now I want to be able to use it to have conversations that I'm extremely passionate about.

Porsha Williams and her ex-fiancé Dennis McKinley are still learning how to navigate their non-romantic relationship.
On Sunday's episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Porsha and Dennis got together after Cynthia Bailey's wedding, which the former couple attended separately, to discuss where they were at.
As viewers recall, Porsha and Dennis dated for a year before getting engaged in September 2018, just two months after she learned she was expecting.
Though they appeared happily in love, even landing their own Bravo spinoff, Dennis cheated on Porsha while she was pregnant with daughter Pilar Jhena, and the affair drove a wedge between them. On RHOA in 2019, Dennis admitted to being unfaithful and said it was because he was sexually turned off by Porsha during her pregnancy and after, as she battled postpartum depression.
Fast-forward to Cynthia and Mike Hill's nuptials last October, Porsha, 39, didn't want her ex to be there. "I tried to tell Dennis that I didn't want him to be invited," she explained to cameras. But "him finding out that I didn't necessarily want him to be at the wedding, he felt like I was going to bring a date."
Dennis then proceeded to say he was "SINGLE ASFK" on his Instagram Story. "I thought the timing was poor. Why are you saying that now? We've been broken up," Porsha said.
"This all is messy because people are going to automatically assume, 'Oh, you believe the blogs and you're upset with me,'" Porsha told cameras, referencing the rumors that she and Tanya Sam had gotten intimate with a stripper at Cynthia's bachelorette party.
"Now, since we've argued, I'm really uncomfortable with him coming to the wedding," she said in a confessional.
But Dennis' decision to attend didn't stop Porsha from going to the wedding herself. "At the wedding, I really was really irritated with Dennis because he dropped this 'single as f---' the same time that Kenya had dropped this stuff in the blogs. So it was almost like, 'Oh, is he in his feelings about this and that? Was that the reason?' You're sending all kinds of crazy signals. Like, don't do that," she said to cameras.
After Cynthia's big day, Porsha and Dennis met up at a restaurant for a meal, where the exes discussed their past.
Though the conversation began with some arguing back-and-forth, they shifted gears to revisit their breakup.
"I just felt like little issues started getting bigger and bigger and bigger for me," Porsha told Dennis. "I kept telling everybody that we were fine. You know, I have my place, you living there but you also have this place in the city and I'm okay with it. Even though I was saying it, for some reason, for me as a woman, it just started to not really sit with me well."
Dennis, though, felt there were "a lot of reasons" for them to not live in a house together, pointing out that she had kicked him out multiple times. He also felt that Porsha's mom took her side on things, including when it came to a "PJ issue."
Knowing what it was like to not spend the majority of her time with her dad growing up, Porsha wanted the opposite for her own daughter, who will turn 2 this month.
"Out of everything we go through, I would never want it to affect your relationship with PJ," she said. "I did not have my dad my whole life. So I would never want her to grow up and have f---ing daddy issues because we are going back and forth all the time."
"I'm not a bitch, it's just like, [I] have to act this way sometimes to protect myself," she continued, getting emotional.
After Dennis said he didn't know what Porsha was "afraid of," she denied that she was feeling that way. "Dennis, it's not that I'm afraid. If we didn't have a baby, you and me probably wouldn't even be talking anymore, because you'd be f---ing over me and I'd be over you," she said.
He then told her that he wasn't going to "allow" himself to be "as vulnerable" as he was the entirety of their relationship.
"Just move on then! And I just move on. I'm sure you're tired," she replied, wiping away tears. "I'm tired."
Despite their fractured past, Dennis expressed that he ultimately wanted the best for his ex. "I want you to be happy," he told her before they raised a toast.
As for Porsha, her hope was that they would learn to better communicate, and that she would be able to move on.
"It's very hard for me and uncomfortable for me sometimes to find that balance between loving him and then also having to let the relationship go," she said in a confessional. "My hope moving forward with Dennis and I is that we will have better communication and that we will heal from the romantic side of our relationship."

At the 63rd Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé made history as she earned her 28th win, making her the show's most-decorated female artist. She beat Alison Krauss' previously held record of 27 wins. Beyoncé is now tied with Quincy Jones for the second-most Grammy wins, while conductor Georg Stolti holds the record with 31 Grammys.
While accepting the award for best R&B performance for "Black Parade," Beyoncé said she was "honored" and "so excited" to get her 28th award.
"Thank you guys. As an artist, I believe it's my job and all of our jobs to reflect the times," she said. "I wanted to uplift and encourage all of the Black kings and queens who inspire me and inspire the whole world ... I can't believe this happened, it's such a magical night."
She then shouted out her 9-year-old daughter Blue, who also took home her first Grammy for "Brown Skin Girl" with her mom, as well as her 3-year-old twins Rumi and Sir, whom she shares with husband JAY-Z.
"I know my daughter is watching, two daughters and my son are watching," she said. "Blue, congratulations you won a Grammy tonight. I'm so proud. I love you so much, my rock."
While accepting the award for best rap song for "Savage Remix" with Megan Thee Stallion earlier in the night, Beyoncé told the rapper: "I have so much respect for you. I'm honored that you asked me to be a part of this song."
She also picked up the award for best rap performance for "Savage" with Megan, 26. At this year's show, Beyoncé was the most-nominated artist with a total of nine nods.

And the Grammy goes to…Megan Thee Stallion! The Hot Girl took home multiple awards including Best New Artist at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (March 14), becoming the first female rapper to win the award since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Lizzo, who won Best New Artist last year, presented her with the trophy at Sunday’s show in Los Angeles.
Megan, who stunned in an orange Dolce & Gabbana gown, looked shocked as Lizzo read her name aloud. “It’s been a hell of a year but we made it,” said an emotional Megan while accepting the award.
She also paid tribute to her late mother Holly Thomas, who passed away in March 2019. “She’s not here with me today but I know she’s here with me in spirit, and she always believed I could do it,” said Meg.
Megan, who was nominated for four awards, also took home her first Grammy for Best Rap Performance for her “Savage” collaboration with Beyoncé during the pre-ceremony.

There will be no celebrity selfies at the Oscars this year. The ceremony itself will be split between two locations: the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard—where the Oscars have been held since 2002—and a new spot, Los Angeles’ Union Station, chosen for its “cavernous” size. Festivities at both venues will be socially distanced, meaning that cramming a dozen famous faces onto one iPhone screen is out of the question.
This year’s Oscars are also taking place two months later than normal thanks to COVID-19, with an expanded eligibility window that has benefitted frontrunners like Minari and Judas And The Black Messiah. One digital innovation we’ve seen before, however, is the announcement of nominees live on Oscars.com, which come this year courtesy of Hollywood power couple Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

'The Talk' is going on hiatus while it reviews Sharon Osbourne's outburst at Sheryl Underwood over Piers Morgan!
"The Talk" is having a two-day hiatus pending a CBS investigation, according to E News.
It came after a tense exchange Wednesday between the hosts Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood.
The dispute was triggered by Osbourne defending Piers Morgan over his treatment of Meghan Markle.
The daytime show "The Talk" is going on a two-day hiatus while it investigates a tense exchange between Sharon Osbourne and her cohosts over Piers Morgan's treatment of Meghan Markle, E News reported.
Staff was notified that Monday and Tuesday's shows - which were to feature the guests Elizabeth Vargas and Carly Pearce - would be canceled. The show is expected to return to live taping Wednesday, according to Deadline.
"Several employees reached out to HR after Wednesday's show because of the way Sharon Osbourne handled the conversation," a source told E News. "Sharon's defense of Piers Morgan felt like a triggering moment, and it was very difficult for many of the staff to watch."
On Friday, CBS announced it would be launching an internal review of the episode.
"We are committed to a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace," a statement from the network to People magazine said. "All matters related to the Wednesday episode of 'The Talk' are currently under internal review."
The exchange in question was in last Wednesday's episode. Osbourne defended Morgan against accusations by her fellow castmates that his treatment of Meghan Markle was racist.
Morgan repeatedly attacked Markle after the March 7 premiere of her interview with Oprah Winfrey. On Tuesday, he left his job as host of "Good Morning Britain" after being questioned over his attitude toward Markle.
Morgan has been a longtime critic of the duchess, saying, "I wouldn't believe her if she read me a weather report, and the fact that she's fired up this onslaught against our royal family, I think is contemptible."
After his firing, Osbourne tweeted in defense of Morgan, which prompted her "Talk" cohosts to question her judgment.
Her cohost Sheryl Underwood said she felt that Morgan's attacks on Markle were rooted in racism.
She told Osbourne her defense of Morgan gave "validation and a safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist."
Underwood said that while Morgan may not have said anything explicitly racist, it was "the implication and the reaction" to the interview with Winfrey that upset many.
In a tense exchange, Osbourne lashed out at Underwood.
"I will ask you again, Sheryl," she said. "I've been asking you during the break. And don't try and cry because if anyone should be crying, it should be me. This is the situation: You tell me where you have heard him say racist things. Educate me."
Underwood replied: "I have felt that Piers was racist in his stance against Meghan Markle, and the last time he was on this show I said as much."
Two days later, Osbourne offered a Notes-app apology and said: "To anyone of color that I offended and/or to anyone that feels confused or let down by what I said, I am truly sorry."
She added that the outburst was because she "panicked, felt blindsided, got defensive & allowed my fear & horror of being accused of being racist take over."
Morgan has argued Osbourne was "bullied" into her apology. He's demanded that "The Talk" offer him an apology in response.
New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees Retires From NFL After 20 Seasons!
One of the most prolific careers in NFL history has come to an end, as New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced Sunday on Instagram he has decided to retire after 20 seasons.
Brees' four children, Baylen, Bowen, Callen and Rylen, announced in a video: "After 15 years with the Saints and 20 years in the NFL, our dad is finally gonna retire. So he can spend more time with us! Yeah!!" Brees added a message to the post that read:
"After 20 years as a player in the NFL and 15 years as a Saint, it is time I retire from the game of football. Each day, I poured my heart & soul into being your Quarterback. Til the very end, I exhausted myself to give everything I had to the Saints organization, my team, and the great city of New Orleans. We shared some amazing moments together, many of which are emblazoned in our hearts and minds and will forever be a part of us.
"You have molded me, strengthened me, inspired me, and given me a lifetime of memories. My goal for the last 15 years was striving to give to you everything you had given to me and more. I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans. This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. Now my real life's work begins!"
What Taysom Hill's new deal means, and why he and Jameis Winston are Saints' best QB bets
Brees, 42, retires as the NFL's all-time leader in career passing yards (80,358) and ranks second all time in touchdown passes (571) and completion percentage (67.7%). More than that, though, Brees will always be revered for helping to revive the Saints franchise and the city of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when he and coach Sean Payton arrived together in 2006.
They led the Saints to the NFC Championship Game in that first year and won the only Super Bowl in franchise history three years later, with Brees being named the game's MVP.
"When I was hired by the Saints as head coach in 2006, the very first goal was to establish a functional and winning culture," Payton said in a statement. "In doing so, it was vital to know what we were looking for in a player, talent, work ethic, makeup, intelligence and leadership are all qualities we found in Drew Brees. ... I am forever grateful for what he has done for our team, our community and for me personally."
Brees never got back to a second Super Bowl despite leading the Saints to four straight NFC South titles over the past four years. His final game was a disappointing 30-20 loss to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round of the playoffs -- the first time Brees ever threw three interceptions in a playoff game.
His decision to retire leaves an enormous void for the Saints to fill with either Taysom Hill, Jameis Winston or a quarterback to be named later.
Brees' legacy has long been secured as one of the game's all-time greats.
On top of all the gaudy numbers and historic accomplishments, Brees also will be remembered as a great underdog story. At just 6 feet tall, Brees was recruited by only two colleges before a record-breaking career at Purdue. He fell to the second round of the draft in 2001, where he began his career with the San Diego Chargers.
In his final game with the Chargers in 2005, Brees suffered a devastating shoulder injury -- a 360-degree labrum tear and some rotator cuff damage, which required 12 anchors to repair. Renowned surgeon James Andrews later said Brees' recovery was the most remarkable of any athlete he ever treated, and Brees was back on the field with the Saints in Week 1 of that unforgettable 2006 season.
"Drew is so much more valuable than all the records, awards and accolades that he amassed through a 15-year career with the New Orleans Saints and 20-year NFL playing career, one of the greatest in our league's history," Saints owner Gayle Benson said in a statement. "When Drew first joined the Saints in 2006, my late husband Tom was determined to deliver a team to New Orleans that would win a championship on the field and become a leader in the community following the setbacks that Hurricane Katrina dealt our region. Over and above his outstanding performance, Drew came to represent the resolve, passion and drive that resonates not only with Saints fans and football fans, but our entire community."
Brees finished his career with a record of 172-114 as a starting quarterback in the regular season and 9-9 in the postseason. He was 142-86 and 9-8 in 15 years with the Saints, with whom his partnership with Payton produced some of the most spectacular offensive teams the game has ever seen.
Brees threw for more than 5,000 yards in a season five different times; no other quarterback has done it more than once. He holds the top three single-season completion percentages in NFL history and six of the top nine.
Brees has ranked among the NFL's top 10 passers in ESPN's Total QBR metric in all 15 seasons since it was created in 2006; it's a streak six years longer than that of any other quarterback during that span.
Though he never won a regular-season MVP award, Brees finished second a record four times.
Brees has long said he believed he could play at a high level until the age of 45 -- as long as he wanted to keep playing. But starting in 2017, he also said he started taking each season one year at a time -- treating each like it could be his last -- and that he would take some time after each season to reflect with wife, Brittany, and their kids about whether he wanted to keep playing.
Brees had already lined up his "next chapter" last year, when he agreed to become an analyst for NBC after his playing days were over.
He officially confirmed those plans during his first interview with NBC's "Today" show on Monday morning.
"You don't just wake up one day and say, 'Hey, I'm gonna retire,'" Brees told "Today," confirming that he went into this past season thinking it would be his last. "It's definitely a process. And listen, I'm 42 years old, I've had a chance to play this game for 20 years in the NFL. And I think for the last few years I've felt like this moment was coming. And it just made me so laser-focused on staying in the moment each and every day, enjoying the moment ... and knowing that I gave it my absolute best."
Brees also expressed his gratitude to several people in a detailed letter to The New Orleans Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate on Monday morning that was nearly 1,800 words long.
He separately thanked the city of New Orleans and "The Who Dat Nation"; the Saints organization, owner Gayle Benson and late owner Tom Benson; his coaches and teammates, including Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis; the training staff, equipment staff and all the "unsung heroes"; his mentors Tom House and Todd Durkin; his parents, family, friends, neighbors and the "village" that it takes to raise a man; his wife and their four children; and all the "young dreamers."
"Words cannot express the love and appreciation I have for you," Brees told the city and the fan base at the beginning of his letter. "From the moment I stepped foot into the city of New Orleans, I could feel your spirit. You told me that if I loved New Orleans, you would love me back. No truer words have ever been spoken."
After missing just one game due to injury in his first 18 seasons, Brees dealt with some significant injuries late in his career. In 2019, he missed five games after tearing a ligament in his thumb. In 2020, he missed four games after suffering a punctured lung and 11 broken ribs.
By retiring now, Brees is clearing the path for fellow 40-something Brady to finish ahead of him in their two most prominent races in the NFL record book. Brady has 10 more career TD passes than Brees and needs 1,155 passing yards to surpass Brees.
Brees also leaves behind a sizable salary-cap hit of $22.65 million that the Saints must account for over the next two years because of the way they chose to structure his past contracts. However, they already reduced his salary from $25 million to the veterans minimum of $1.075 million this year so that they can wait until after June 1 to officially process his retirement. As a result, they can push $11.5 million of his remaining cap costs into 2022.
Brees will count $12.225 million against this year's cap through June 1. Then his 2021 cap charge will drop to $11.15 million after his retirement becomes official.
That's a big deal for the Saints, who were more affected by the NFL's reduced salary cap than maybe any team in the NFL this year. They began the offseason nearly $100 million over the cap, before reducing Brees' salary and releasing veterans Emmanuel Sanders, Janoris Jenkins, Kwon Alexander and Thomas Morstead, among others.
The Saints also restructured Hill's contract to create cap room. Hill received a four-year, $140 million contract extension -- but all years are voidable, and it's a mechanism to free up cap space this year, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. It saves the Saints more than $7.5 million against the cap this year, and his contract numbers this year include a $9.686 million signing bonus, a $1.439 million guaranteed roster bonus and a $1.034 million guaranteed base salary plus incentives.
Contract restructures that include voided years are common, but the salaries on voided years aren't usually reported -- and sometimes they're heavily inflated. If those voided salaries are too low, it can affect the rule on renegotiating deals within 12 months.
On a positive note, Brees is leaving the Saints in decent shape as far as backup options.

A video has gone viral of Trey Songz spitting in the mouths of two women on what sources are saying is a video set. Hopefully, these two women haven’t been stolen from someone because the video would probably be too much for an ex to stomach.
While some people are open to this freaky sexual behavior, others are incomplete disgust.
Although we don’t know what was going on here, we must say Twitter has released some pretty funny tweets on the video, with many of them questioning how could this be happening during a pandemic. Especially, since it was reported that Trigga caught the coronavirus back in October 2020.

Reggie Warren of Iconic R&B Group Troop Dead at 52!
Reggie Warren, best known for being an original member of the iconic R&B group Troop, passed away on Sunday at his California home, TMZ reports. He was 52.
A rep for Warren told TMZ that the singer had been experiencing health issues and was released from the hospital to his home on Saturday to be with family in his last moments. Although an official cause of death has not been disclosed, the outlet was told it was not related to COVID-19.
Troop, which stands for “Total Respect Of Other People,” was formed in the late ‘80s by Warren and his friends Rodney Benford, John Harreld, Steve Russell and Allen McNeil. The group went on to release five albums and became known for tracks like “Spread My Wings” and “Mamacita,” as well as covers of The Jackson 5’s “All I Do Is Think of You” and The Deele’s “Sweet November.” Troop also made an appearance in the 1991 film New Jack City starring Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, and Chris Rock.
Troop member Steve Russell mourned Warren’s death on Instagram, writing, “Job well done my brother I will see you on the other side.”

Fortunately, he was spotted and escorted off the property, but only given a warning by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s officers not to return.
Two days later, the hardheaded perp did just that, resulting in his arrest. Brooks currently faces one count of misdemeanor trespassing.
In August, Harry and Meghan purchased the Santa Barbara home for $14.5 million in the prestigious Montecito neighborhood. The couple made the move after their stay in Vancouver at the start of the pandemic, when their whereabouts were released to the public and they were stripped of security.
“Suddenly it dawned on me, ‘Hang on, the borders could be closed. The world knows where we are. It’s not safe, it’s not secure, we probably need to get out of here,’” Harry, 36, recalled to Oprah Winfrey during the couple’s bombshell interview Sunday.

Harry also revealed during the couple’s sit-down with Winfrey that his inheritance from mother, Princess Diana, has been supporting his family after being cut off by the royals financially.

Jennifer Lopez’s Los Angeles Home Target Of Fake 911 Calls!
Following Jennifer Lopez’s performance at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, Los Angeles police have been repeatedly called to her LA area home.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that there had been at least fifteen 911 calls to her home for various complaints. The complaints have ranged from loud music to a man and woman arguing.
All of the calls have been made while Lopez and fiance Alex Rodriguez have been out of town. All of the calls have turned out to be fake, and LAPD is investigating because the caller could be charged for abusing the 911 system if identified.
Since the calls began shortly after the inauguration, one theory is that they are politically motivated.
Regina King Fans Upset She Was Snubbed For Best Director Oscar Nomination After Her ‘One Night In Miami’ Directorial Debut!
While the Oscars have a record number of female directors it’s recognizing via nominations this year, Regina King isn’t on the list.
This is the first year two women have been nominated for Best Director at the same time (salute to Chloe Zhao of Nomadland and Emerald Fennell of Promising Young Women), but Regina King isn’t a part of it after directing her first film One Night In Miami last year.
Interestingly enough, all three women made history when they were each nominated for Best Director of a Motion Picture Golden Globe (Chloe Zhao took home the award), which makes it even more interesting to some fans that Regina King didn’t receive a nomination for an Oscar this year. Regina King trended on Twitter shortly after the nominations were announced Monday (March 15th), as fans reacted to her getting snubbed.
One Night In Miami, written by Kemp Powers, did receive a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Leslie Odom, Jr., who played Sam Cooke in the critically-acclaimed film is also up for Best Supporting Actor.

Louisiana Troopers Joked In Group Text About Beating Black Man, “He’s Gonna Be Sore”!
A group text message between Louisana State Police troopers shows several of the force’s troopers joked about beating a Black man who took them on a high-speed chase last year.
According to KTLA, court filings referenced text exchanges that said the “whoopin” would give him “nightmares for a long time.”
“He gonna be sore tomorrow for sure,” Trooper Jacob Brown. The former trooper was charged in the case and resigned on Wednesday. Brown texted three of his co-workers, “Warms my heart knowing we could educate that young man.”
Antonio Harris, 29, was arrested in May and beaten by troopers, although he “immediately surrendered.” Harris’ incident is very similar to the State Police pursuit that took place earlier last year, which ended in the still-unexplained death of Ronald Greene, another Black motorist.
Bodycam footage of Greene’s death has still not been released and remains the subject of a federal civil rights investigation, the outlet reported.
The day of Brown’s incident, he was pulled over for a minor traffic violation in Richland Parish, but he re-entered his car and fled the scene.
He also faces charges in two other excessive-force cases.
Brown’s chase spanned 29 miles and reached high speeds of 150 mph. It ended when deputy sheriffs deployed a “tire deflation device” that caused Harris’s car to go into a ditch.
The responding officers—notably, white—attacked him even though he surrendered with his “face down (prone) on the ground and extended his arms away from his body and his legs spread apart.”
Dakota DeMoss, the first trooper to arrive, “delivered a knee stroke” to Harris and slapped him in the face with an open palm. He then turned off his body camera, court records indicated.
George Harper, another responding trooper, used his fist several times to punch Harris in the head. He also threatened to “punish” him while Brown pulled his hair.
“At no time did Harris resist arrest,” the State Police internal investigation concluded.
The troopers produced “wholly untrue” reports on the matter, saying that Harris resisted and continued to flee the scene. They also tried to conceal bodycam footage from investigators.
There were 14 text exchanges between them, which consisted of lol’s and haha’s.
“BET he wont run from a full grown bear again,” Brown wrote.
“Bet he don’t even cross into LA anymore,” DeMoss responded, who earlier jeered that Harris was “still digesting that ass whoopin.”
“He gonna spread the word that’s for damn sure,” Harper texted back.
DeMoss and Harper have been charged and placed on administrative leave. Initially, DeMoss received only counseling for his involvement in the beating. He was admonished for turning his FM radio up “extremely loud” amid the chase and switching stations “in order to find the right song.”
