A few of our musical favorites have landed the May issue of Essence magazine. Erykah Badu, Ledisi and Solange are songbirds in their own right, dishing with the mag about learning to love their ‘natural beauty’.
Ledisi on not taking what grows from her scalp too seriously:
Although I’m known for my long, colorful locs, I still don’t take my hair too seriously. I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am.
Solange on self-expression:
We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn’t be pigeonholed into any one category.
Erykah Badu on what inspires her style:
I view my hair and clothes as functional art. I’m my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement.

Monica & LaLa Take The Kiddies To The Georgia Aquarium
It was all about the kiddies. Monica, LaLa and LaLa's mother Carmen, hung out in Atlanta with Rocko, Romelo and Kian to explore at the Georgia Aquarium.
Mekai (son of the creative director for LaLa's Motives Cosmetics), Romelo, Rocko and Kian looked like they were enjoying themselves. Monica posted, “#MyCrewToday #NoGreaterLove Mekai @romelohill @rockohill & Kiyan.... @GeorgiaAquarium #MyKindOfDay” Cute.

And although baby Laiyah couldn’t go, she got in some time with her “auntie” LaLa after they got back from the aquarium. Monica said, “#BabyGirl didn't go to the aquarium today but of course we had to come back and love on her #SheWillBeAbleToHangSoon #LayAndLa”

Shooting At Fort Hood Leaves At 4 Dead, 16 Injured

A gunman opened fire on Fort Hood on Wednesday killing three and injuring 16, before putting the gun to his head and killing himself, Lieutenant General Mark A. Milley said in a televised press conference.
Fort Hood remains on lockdown after a shooting at the Texas Army post on Wednesday.
A Pentagon official tells NPR's Tom Bowman that the suspected shooter is Ivan Lopez, a military truck driver.
Tom tells All Things Considered, there doesn't appear to be a link to terrorism in the shootings.
"This appears to be soldier-to-soldier violence," Tom said.
Talking to pool reporters in Chicago, President Obama said he was monitoring the situation.
"We're heartbroken something like this might have happened again," Obama said. The president added that this incident brought back memories of the 2009 shooting that left 13 dead on the post. He said that, today, the sense of safety that soldiers should have at home has been broken.
"I want to just assure all of us, we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened," he said.
Shortly after reports of a shooting, the 1st Cavalry Division tweeted that personnel "should shelter in place immediately, close doors and stay away from windows."
Eyewitnesses told local news stations they saw a stream of emergency vehicles make their way onto the post. One witness said he saw police escort service members and civilians from buildings with their hands in the air.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said during a brief statement from Hawaii that this was clearly "a terrible tragedy."
The Army post was the scene of a mass shooting in 2009, where 13 people were killed and more than 30 were wounded. The AP reports it was "the deadliest attack on a domestic military installation in history."

Virginia Couple Wins The Lottery 3 Times In March
A Virginia couple caught a hat trick when it comes to playing the lottery. Calvin and Zatera Spencer won lotto prizes three times in the month of March.
Reports The Grio:
The Virginia Lottery says Calvin and Zatera Spencer of Portsmouth claimed their latest prize last week — $1 million in the scratch-off game $100 Million Cash Extravaganza.
The streak started when the Spencers won $1 million in the March 12 Powerball drawing, matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball number.
The couple struck again on March 26 when Calvin Spencer won $50,000 in the Virginia Lottery's Pick 4 game with 10 tickets that had the same winning combination of 6-6-6-6.
Let's hope the Spencer's keep plenty of those winnings tucked away for rainy days.

Chris Evans Passes Torch To Michael B. Jordan At Screening For Capt America 2!
Though there’s been some who are upset that the new “Torch” in the upcoming remix of “Fantastic Four”.
But judging by the pics from a recent hollywood event, the former Torch Chris Evans gives his seal of approval to Michael B. Jordan.
Celebrating the massive success, and still in heavy promo for the action flick, Evans and the cast Cobie Smulder, Frank Grillo and others were at Cinema Society and Gucci Guilty sponsored screening for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”.
Benzino REVEALS Motive Behind Shooting, SHARES Intimate Photos From Hospital RECOVERY Room
Over the weekend, we reported about the shooting that sent "LAHH ATL" star Benzino to the hospital and now, he's speaking out and sharing what he thinks led to the incident.
When asked by WXIA in Atlanta about a motive for the shooting, Zino placed blame on his nephew, Gai Scott, saying
"In the past I felt like, yes, I felt like my sister and my nephew was taking advantage of my mother. Yes. I spoke up about it years ago. There had been loans taken out on her house."
In other new developments, Gai was taken into custody and charged with assault with intent to murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in the Plymouth District Court.
We also reached out to Dave Mays, Benzino's longtime friend and co-founder of The Source, who told us, "Zino is good. Thanks a lot for reaching out. He's resting now he will probably have surgery tomorrow (Monday). We really appreciate your thoughts and prayers."
In the photo atop, Benzino was visited by singer Thi Thi (whom he refers to as the love of his life) and his kids. He captioned, "#familyfirst RAYRAY, COI LERAY, TAJ RAYMOND ALL ME!"
UPDATES:
Benzino’s nephew, Gai Scott, appeared in court today and entered a “not-guilty” plea. According to his attorney, Gai shot Benzino in self-defense. Gai is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.
Benzino called into TMZ to discuss the shooting.....
He told the TMZ crew that he DOES NOT speak to his sister or Gai and does not know why Gai would shoot him.
Alicia Keys And Edie Falco Catch Exclusive "Rio 2" Screening
Stepping out of the NYC rain for a fun afternoon with their families, celebrities including Alicia Keys hit up an exclusive “Rio 2” movie after-party this past Sunday (March 30).
Hosted by Popsicle and FOX movies, eager party-goers got the chance to catch a first time peek at the brand new animated flick as well as hang out at an indoor pool party that included samba dancing, swimming, Brazilian fare and tasty Popsicle pops!
Also on hand to soak up the festivities were other Hollywood stars including Edie Falco, Natalie Morales, Jeffery Tambor and Rachel Dratch.

Black Twitter’s #StandWithJamilah, an Ebony Editor, after RNC Feud
*Recently, the RNC (Republican National Committee) demanded and received an apology from Ebony senior editor Jamilah Lemieux for “attacking” the committee’s deputy press secretary Raffi Williams for his “race, heritage or political views.”
But just how the RNC rallied behind Williams, Black Twitter is doing the same for Lemieux.
In a note from RNC chair Reince Preibus, words like “civil rights” and “journalistic Objectivity” were used — it sounded like a world where white people were oppressed and black people weren’t
This incident started with a tweet from Lemieux talking about her dislike with a new black conservative magazine by Dr. Ben Carson and Armstrong Williams.
A response from Williams followed — talking about “diversity of thought.
Lemieux was not feeling what Williams (who she thought was a white dude) had to say about the matter and tweeted:
“Oh great, here comes a White dude telling me how to do this Black thing. Pass.”
After realizing her mistake, she tweeted an apology.
“I was looking at your avi without blowing it up. I apologize for that. However, I care about NOTHING you have to say,” she tweeted.
But that wasn’t enough for the RNC. In response Ebony wrote,
“EBONY acknowledges Senior Editor Jamilah Lemieux’s lack of judgment on her personal Twitter account and apologizes to Raffi Williams and the Black Republican community.”
Although Lemieux had to leave the conversation, the hashtag #StandWithJamilah began to trend on Twitter.
And as for the RNC, they accepted the apology.
But if the RNC are so concerned with having “greater engagement and understanding between the Republican Party and the black community” as said in the note, then maybe the should be focusing on legislation and media they support that is in direct opposition to those goals…. cough… cough… Fox News.
And maybe not so much on an editor who was expressing her opinion yet apologized simply for her lack of judgment on Williams’ race.
Oprah Gives Ex-Stepmom Barbara Winfrey 60 Days to Vacate
*Per a judge’s recommendation, Oprah Winfrey will give her former stepmother, Barbara Winfrey, 60 days to leave the $1.4 million Williamson County, Tennessee estate owned by the TV mogul.
Barbara, who is divorced from Oprah’s father Vernon, refused to leave the home on Willowbooke Circle in Laurelbrooke, which O had purchased for her father and Barbara after they married in 2001.
She had faced eviction within 10 days, but during a March 31 eviction hearing, General Sessions Court Judge Ernie Williams’ suggested she be given more time.
“The court is certainly aware of your situation,” Williams told Barbara. “I’m trying to do what I can for you, OK?”
Barbara and Vernon’s relationship fell apart two years ago and Vernon filed for divorce. The house was kept in the name of the limited liability company Overground Railroad, started by Oprah, reports USA Today.
Oprah then offered Barbara her former house “free and clear” to live in, but Barbara refused the deal because, she said, it required her to sign a non-disclosure agreement with her former stepdaughter.
“As part of the divorce proceedings, Barbara Winfrey was offered the Chateaue Valley home free and clear to live with her family and she chose not to accept it,” a spokesperson for Oprah told Radar.
“The next offer was to sell the residence on Willowbooke Circle and split the proceeds equally, which she also turned down. After several requests to voluntarily vacate the property at Willowbrooke Circle, the appropriate paperwork has been filed to have her vacate the property. A 60 day extension has been granted.”

Over the weekend, "Atlanta Exes" star Tameka Raymond hosted a 5K run and walk at Chastain Park to benefit Kile's World Foundation, which she established in memory of her son Kile Glover.
When speaking about Kile and the foundation (which offers art education to kids), Tameka told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, "The first word to describe him would be angelic. Since I've lost him, I've been able to reflect on the fact that I had an angel in my life for 11 years and I didn't know it."
The event brought out Tameka's "Atlanta Exes" co-stars Torrei Hart, Monyetta Shaw and Christina Johnson.
On Instagram, Torrei wrote "I did a 5k today for a great cause. What an amazing day. I was feeling really sluggish this morning but I am glad I pushed through and came out to support@tamekaraymond for her sons foundation Kile’s World. Happy Birthday Kile may your legacy live on forever.#miles4kile #turnup"
Tameka received an endorsement from Beyonce over the weekend when she posted the Kile's World flyer on her Beyonce.com site as part of #beygood. When she heard about the news, Tameka tweeted,
"Woke up smiling this morning. Thinking about what an impact my son Kile has made. I’m so proud that Beyonce.com is acknowledging my efforts that only come from a pure place. Pharrell Williams Joins ‘The Voice’ As Coach
Pharrell Williams has another reason to be happy. The Neptunes hitmaker has signed on as a coach on “The Voice.”
The 40-year-old will fill one of the red chairs on the seventh season of the singing competition, NBC revealed on Monday.
“Okay, we can OFFICIALLY say it! WE ARE SO #HAPPY to announce PHARRELL WILLIAMS = #NewVoiceCoach for SEASON 7,” tweeted “The Voice.”
“This is going to be so fun,” added Pharrell, who previously appeared as an advisor alongside Usher during season four.
He replaces previous coach CeeLo Green, who left the show after four seasons. The three other coaches for season seven have yet to be announced.
The Oscar nominee is enjoying a banner year. In addition to winning four Grammys and launching his album G I R L, Pharrell is set to debut a clothing line with adidas and his first fragrance.
