The Jaeger LeCoultre Watch That Janet Jackson Gave Rene Elizondo Is Up For Sale!
A gift that superstar Janet Jackson gave her once secret ex-husband Rene Elizondo is on the selling block. When Janet Jackson fell in love with Mexican-American songwriter Rene Elizondo, Jr., she kept it secret from her family. The pair were married in 1991 without any fanfare, but over the course of their 13-year marriage, they slowly but steadily fell out of love. When they finally split up for good in 2000, Elizondo sued Jackson for spousal support, claiming that he’d been forced under duress to sign a prenuptial agreement. At the end of all the messy courtroom action, Elizondo came away with an estimated $10 million in cash.
Now a watch that Janet gave him is up for auction:
The inscription reads, “Rene, I would sooner grow old all alone than to have another lover. I love you, Janet.”
From the dealer:
While we are known to be watch dealers to many celebrities, we are normally discreet and when selling their watches we never mention if the previous owner was a celebrity. However, with this watch… there is no getting around what it is because of the inscription on the back: RENE I WOULD SOONER GROW OLD ALL ALONE THAN TO EVER HAVE ANOTHER LOVER I LOVE YOU JANET. Janet Jackson gave this watch as a gift to her husband Rene Elizondo.
This is an early Jaeger LeCoultre Geographique with model number 169.6.92 and in solid platinum. I say “early” because this model preceded the similar, much better known Master Geographic 1000 Hours, by several years. Accordingly, this is an important JLC timepiece, which served as an inspiration for the later Master Black and then Master 1000 Hours collections. Serial number 024X dates production to circa 1992.
The Geographique features a window at the top of the dial for displaying reference cities. The time corresponding to the reference city is indicated in the subdial at 6 o’clock. Using the crown at 10 o’clock, the reference cities can be advanced forward and backward, and the time in the subdial adjusts accordingly. This is a very useful complication.
The dial is silver and with age has developed a champagne patina. In addition to the world time shown at the bottom of the dial, power reserve is indicated at 10 o’clock and the date in the subdial at 2 o’clock.
Case is solid platinum, with dimensions of 38mm diameter by 10mm thick. Sapphire crystal. Water resistant to 50 meters. Case back has the platinum hallmark along with the aforementioned personalized engraving.
Movement is the in-house automatic winding Jaeger LeCoultre caliber 929. Jaeger makes such nice movements, that several elite brands use them in their own watches, under different names.
Strap is black leather with generic buckle. Watch has JLC box and papers. WOW Times are hard you ran through 10 Million like that?
