Inside the dizzying, meteoric rise of a true African pop star.The night before the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Tyla was unusually calm. The South African singer was about to give a surprise performance at the Prelude to the Olympics, held at the Fondation Louis Vuitton and attended by celebrities from Zendaya to LeBron James. “I was asked to do the event by Pharrell [Williams, Louis Vuitton Men’s creative director], so it was insane—an instant ‘Yes,’” she says. “Sometimes I’m nervous, like I’m really nervous.” But this time, Tyla looked forward to the show the entire day. She dressed in an oversize black and yellow jersey from Louis Vuitton Men’s yet-to-be-released spring 2025 collection, over spandex shorts and thigh-high boots, and performed four songs, including her runaway hit “Water.” “I felt hot,” she says with a smile. “When I got on, I knew it was going to be that type of crowd: professional, don’t dance much. But regardless, I had so much fun.” Tyla teased the VIP audience as she sang: “I even called them out onstage like, ‘You guys are stiff.’”
Days before, Tyla had been in London, where she was in rehearsal for upcoming shows—including Chicago’s Lollapalooza, her first big music festival in the United States—and making both a deluxe album of her self-titled debut EP and new music. At 22, she has had one of the fastest, most explosive rises in music—a true African pop star with a following that spans much of the world. “I just started seeing stars,” Ezekiel Lewis, president of Tyla’s label, Epic Records, says of first seeing a video of her performing. “It was a grand opportunity to help collaborate and make something truly original.”
Just a couple of years ago, the singer, born Tyla Laura Seethal, was in high school in her hometown, the sprawling, dynamic city of Johannesburg, where she grew up on the east side. As a little girl, she posted videos of herself covering pop songs by the likes of Justin Bieber. When she started making music in high school, she experimented by mixing genres from R&B to pop with her foremost love: amapiano, South African house music. When she heard the log drums of the song “Iskhathi (Gonggong)” by Kwiish SA at the age of 14, she was seduced. “When amapiano would come on, we would see everybody’s moves just change. Seeing the energy of it…it felt so spiritual,” she tells me. “I always wanted to mix it with other styles that I enjoy, like R&B and pop—and make it my own.” It was frustrating to watch her country’s unique music, from amapiano to kwaito house, go unnoticed by the rest of the world. “I felt it was so special, and it needed to be shared. I did my own version of it in hopes of getting people to go deeper and discover the other artists we have and the origins of my sound.”
Tyla’s family encouraged her. Her mom, who was creative and did everything from making jewelry and candles to selling chocolate and real estate, told her she could sing. Her aunt, a professional dancer, taught her how to belly dance when she was small. And her grandmother told her stories of her days in singing competitions, back when she was vying for money and packets of cigarettes. “I was inspired. She would always push me. She’d make me sing a song 20 times until I got it right,” Tyla says.
Tyla was precocious, and she knew she wanted to be a pop star. She auditioned for all the school plays, but singing was her dream. “It’s something I always really wanted, for myself, and for Africa, and for the world. Something different, something original,” she tells me. “I also just wanted to dress up. I’m not always inspirational, guys!”

“I’m not a citizen of America. Isn’t that crazy?” she said, before clarifying that she is still a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago where she was born.
“I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I’ve been in the States for many years. You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”

Diddy has filed an appeal in response to a judge denying his release and bail.
TMZ reports that Sean Combs and his attorney, Marc Agnifilo, filed legal documents issuing a slew of promises if the artist were to be released on bail. This includes being regularly drug tested and barring women, besides his family, from visiting him.
A portion of the letter stated that “family, property caretakers, and friends who are not considered co-conspirators” would be the only people allowed to visit his client if released. Their letter also insisted that “any person who enters the property should sign a visitor log,” which would be sent to the courts daily.
Combs also reasoned that he would have no contact with people considered potential witnesses in an explosive case that now includes a RICO charge.
The news arrives a day after the mogul entered a not-guilty plea to all of the charges lodged against him, including transportation to engage in prostitution and sex trafficking. Combs was set on meeting the initial $50,000,000 bail by putting up his Miami home and using his mother’s house as collateral. However, the court denied his request for bail on Tuesday (Sept. 17), and the mogul has been in jail since.

Musician and actor Eve joins NYU Steinhardt as Scholar-in-Residence for 2024-25.
Grammy Award winner and Emmy-nominated actor Eve Jihan Cooper will share her experience as a trailblazing woman in hip-hop as the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
The year-long residency kicks off September 21 with a welcoming event. It will be followed by a series of meetings, classroom visits, and intimate conversations with students and faculty about Eve’s historic career and the evolving music industry.
“We are thrilled to be hosting Eve as our 2024-25 Scholar in Residence,” says Jack H. Knott, the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of NYU Steinhardt. “She will share the expertise she's gained as an award-winning artist in music, film, and television, as well as a philanthropist working with young people in the arts. I know our students and faculty will learn from her engagement and support of our efforts to advance equity, belonging, and innovation.”
Eve has built a successful career in entertainment over more than two decades. In 1999, her debut studio album, Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady, reached the top of the Billboard 200, making her only the third female rapper to achieve that position. She subsequently released three additional albums, including 2002’s Scorpion, which was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Rap Album. She won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration Grammy Award that year for Let Me Blow Ya Mind, a duet with Gwen Stefani from that record.

Grammy Award winner and Emmy-nominated actor Eve Jihan Cooper will share her experience as a trailblazing woman in hip-hop as the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
The year-long residency kicks off September 21 with a welcoming event. It will be followed by a series of meetings, classroom visits, and intimate conversations with students and faculty about Eve’s historic career and the evolving music industry.
“We are thrilled to be hosting Eve as our 2024-25 Scholar in Residence,” says Jack H. Knott, the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of NYU Steinhardt. “She will share the expertise she's gained as an award-winning artist in music, film, and television, as well as a philanthropist working with young people in the arts. October 5 will be hosted by stand-up comic Nate Bargatze, who is undoubtedly less surprised to be invited this time around, while Coldplay will handle the music duties.

Zach Bryan Deactivates X Account Following Backlash Over Taylor Swift Tweet
Zach Bryan chose to mess with the wrong fanbase. The country music star has deactivated his X account (formerly known as Twitter) after coming under fire for his tweets which dissed Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce.
On Tuesday, September 18, he played with fire as he tweeted, "eagles > chiefs," followed by, "Kanye > Taylor." He then concluded the tweet by asking his followers, "who's with me."
Needless to say, many disagreed with Zach. Swifties swiftly retaliated, given his message was a twofold offense against both Taylor and her boyfriend, who is the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. They wrote back, "Tyler Childers > Zach Bryan" and "Literally anyone else > Zach Bryan."
The "Something in the Orange" hitmaker attempted to do damage control, claiming in another tweet, "guys I love Taylor, was listening to TTPD last night and thank you aimee came on and I drunkenly tweeted that about Kanye. If anyone took it serious please know I love both artists a lot and think we’re in a really beautiful time of music."
However, the backlash proved to be too much to handle as Zach later deactivated his account. That did not stop Swifties from mocking the 28-year-old singer/songwriter as someone commented on Pop Crave's post about his tweet, "He knew not to mess with the Swifties." Another chimed in, "got all brave just to wimp out and deactivate."

Following her historic Emmy win as the first Latina actress to receive the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Liza Colon-Zayas is now lending her support to the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Colon-Zayas, who plays Tina Marrero in FX's "The Bear", will join actor Anthony Ramos at a rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 21, to encourage Latino voters to get to the polls.
The Harris-Walz campaign announced increased efforts to reach Latino voters during Hispanic Heritage Month, including a $3 million investment in Spanish-language radio and community events in key battleground states.
In her Emmy acceptance speech, Colon-Zayas urged Latinos to vote for their rights. "To all the Latinas who would be looking at me," she said, "keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights."
Colon-Zayas and Ramos are not new to promoting the Latino vote. Ramos previously encouraged people to vote through social media and interviews, while Walz has worked to expand protections for undocumented immigrants in Minnesota.

"So, 'Minecraft Movie' - I have a cameo in the Minecraft movie that's coming out - I would have to say Jason Momoa," she replied to the question.
According to the 32-year-old Internet personality, the 45-year-old actor "mistreated some of the crew" during production of the forthcoming flick, in which he plays Garett "The Garbage Man" Garrison. "It was pretty disappointing," she added.
"It was after a very intense scene - and it was a very emotional scene - so maybe he was still in character, I don't know. I was just surprised about how he treated some of the crew," Valkyrae continued.
She further recalled the "Game of Thrones" alum being "really mad at them that they weren't doing something right in setting up the shot and stuff," adding the Hollywood hunk "was just angry, really mad, and yelling."
"I was like, 'Man, this is not a good work environment, I would not be happy working under these conditions.' I would have to say that was the worst celebrity thing I've seen," she concluded.

TikTok Back In Federal Court Fighting Law That Might Ban Popular Platform In America
If you love TikTok and all that comes with it, have fun now because it might not last too much longer. The U.S. government clashed with the popular platform’s lawyers in federal court over a law that could ban the app by mid-January. TikTok is arguing the measure is unconstitutional and the Justice Department claiming it is necessary to eliminate a national security risk.
The legal battle took place before a panel of three judges at a federal appeals court in Washington.
Andrew Pincus, representing TikTok, argued, “The law before this court is unprecedented and its effect would be staggering,” suggesting that it would impose speech limitations based on hypothetical future risks. Additionally, an attorney for content creators who joined the challenge compared the law to banning Americans from publishing on foreign-owned media outlets.
Get this, the law was signed by President Joe Biden in April, comes after years of concern in Washington about TikTok’s ties to China. The U.S. government make a serious claim that TikTok collects sensitive user data that could be accessed by the Chinese government and that the app’s proprietary algorithm could be manipulated to shape content.
What’s more, Daniel Tenny, an attorney for the Justice Department, argued, “The problem is that same data is extremely valuable to a foreign adversary trying to compromise the security of the United States.”
Pincus contended that Congress should have opted for transparency regarding potential propaganda rather than forcing a divestiture or ban.
Interestingly, the judges also pressed the Justice Department on First Amendment concerns. Judge Sri Srinivasan noted that government efforts to curb content manipulation raise alarms regarding free speech. Tenny responded that the law does not directly target TikTok users or creators, suggesting any impact on them would be indirect.
Anyway, TikTok maintains that it does not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and that divestment is not a feasible option. The company argues that even if divestment were possible, TikTok would lose the technology that powers the app, reducing it to “a shell of its former self.”

Laverne Cox Talks Pretty Privilege And 'UGLIES' Role She Defends Her Character’s Cosmetic Surgery Mandate, ‘It’s A Reflection Of What’s Going On In The World Right Now’
Friday, September 13, Netflix released their new film UGLIES and BOSSIP got the scoop directly from the cast.
The film stars Joey King, Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, and Laverne Cox. Based on Scott Westerfield’s novel of the same name, UGLIES introduces audiences to a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16. The story centers around a young woman named Tally (Joey King) who is eager for her turn to receive her surgery and join the rest of society. But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted.
The folks at BOSSIP spoke to Laverne Cox spoke about her role in UGLIES, Dr. Cable, who some might say is the villain of the project. It turns out that Cox disagrees.
“I think at the end of the day she wants to create a perfect society where everyone is equal, where no one is discriminated against because of the way they look,” Cox told BOSSIP. “Obviously her methods have some ethical issues but I don’t think I could play a character if I didn’t feel like what she was doing — if I don’t feel justified in it. Ultimately I [Dr. Cable] want power and control for sure and the fact that she’s chosen, of all the things that she could do, to create an equal society. It’s that she’s chosen beauty, that she’s chosen pretty and constructed this society around uglies, pretties, mid pretties, it speaks to the power of beauty. I think in our in our culture that consciously or unconsciously we make decisions about people based on how they look. Pretty privilege is real. There’s studies that show prettier people make more money, have more opportunities it’s just a real thing. So she’s just kind of acknowledging the world the way it is and finding a way to make it more equal. Obviously there is a resistance to that. There’s the smoke and she has to handle that and she goes about doing that by any means necessary.”
“In the book, Scott says she has these wolf eyes, so I thought a lot about wolves and how they are both predatory but very protective of their their cubs. We love doing animal work as an actor. Dangerous misinformation? I hadn’t thought about it that way. There is propaganda for sure. Yeah absolutely. That’s her world, that’s the world she’s created and is it misinformation? I think it could certainly be looked at that way but there’s a whole system in place that she’s created that places emphasis on love is that wrong? A homogenized society? Probably. Laverne would say ‘definitely,’ but from Dr. Cable’s perspective it’s about creating an equal society right? So in her mind and I’m the character so obviously it’s problematic to like make everyone the same and sort of control their minds in the process, that’s a deep problem, but it also is a reflection of what’s going on in the world right now. We have so much misinformation, so much emphasis on filters and beauty. People are literally taking their face-app’d versions of themselves to plastic surgeons, instead of taking a picture of a celebrity, they’re taking a picture of their filtered self in to plastic surgeons. So this is right now. I mean we’re kind of living that right now.”
Since UGLIES is based on a novel, we also asked Cox about the books that helped shape her when she was a young adult and she named many of the classics that she was taught in her freshman year of high school, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitgerald and Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman as well as short stories by Salinger.
