The Daily Buzz For July 15 ☕πŸ“°☕

VIOLA!! πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜ Viola Davis for Vanity Fair Magazine!
Viola Davis covers the latest issue of Vanity Fair magazine photographed by Dario Calmese and styled by Elizabeth Stewart.

On protesting and her voice: “I feel like my entire life has been a protest. My production company is my protest. Me not wearing a wig at the Oscars in 2012 was my protest. It is a part of my voice, just like introducing myself to you and saying, ‘Hello, my name is Viola Davis.’”
On how differently the industry treats men and women: “We know as women, when you speak up, you’re labeled a bitch—immediately. Unruly—immediately. Just as a woman. As a woman of color, there is very, very, very little you have to do. All you have to do is maybe roll your eyes, and that’s it.” In moments like that, she feels that post-traumatic slave syndrome once again: “Negro, you do as I say, when I tell you to do it.” Later, she’ll tell me, “If there is a place that is a metaphor for just fitting in and squelching your own authentic voice, Hollywood would be the place.”

#NewMusic from Mayer Hawthorne ‘Rare Changes’!
Prior to the current pandemic that we're living through, Mayer Hawthorne was serving up singles left and right at an impressive pace. He slowed things down a bit during the quarantine era, though, switching gears to drop multiple episodes of his Hawthorne Radio and hosting his Wine & Vinyl Hour every Thursday like clockwork. Even with all that going on, he's still blessing us with newness with the release of his latest single "Rare Changes."

"Rare Changes" is another entry in Mayer Hawthorne's wine-soaked brand of R&B. Led by a catchy guitar riff and piano chords that are reminiscent of a disco-era mid-temp.

LISTEN HERE
If Mayer Hawthorne is willing to continue giving us quality one-offs like this, we'll more than happily crank up the volume and have our own personal dance parties in our living rooms. Give "Rare Changes" a spin when you press play and then pick up your own copy from Mayer's website.

John Legend Reveals His Past History of Cheating!
John Legend sat down with Dax Shepard for a conversation, which turned to the topic of cheating on girlfriends.
Dax brought it up first, saying he had a “f–king deplorable” past with cheating.
John then responded, “I think what happened for me, you go through a lot of your life in your teens and I was younger than everybody in high school and college, and so I just didn’t get a lot of girls,” he said on Dax‘s Armchair Expert podcast. “When I started to get that attention, I loved it.”

“I escaped ‘technically cheating’ by keeping my relationship ill-defined. But it was really cheating,” he added. “I definitely was dishonest and selfish.”
“At a certain point, you just realize you’re happier being honest,” he said. “You’re happier being faithful and being in love with one person….At a certain point, I just decided that person was Chrissy. I decided I wasn’t gonna mess with somebody else anymore.”

John and Chrissy are one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples, and he would never cheat on her. He joked about it with Dax, saying, “Chrissy has 12 million Twitter followers. If I were to do anything, it would be career suicide. It would be terrible.”

John recently revealed the exact moment he knew Chrissy was the one.

The U.S. Carries Out Its First Federal Execution In 17 Years!
According to CNN, Daniel Lewis Lee, a professed white supremacist, was executed early Tuesday morning, marking the first federal execution in 17 years.
“I didn’t do it,” Lee said as he took his last breath. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I’m not a murderer. You’re killing an innocent man.”
Lee was convicted of murdering a family of three in 1996. The convicted killer was scheduled for the death penalty on Monday, but federal judge Tanya Chutkan delayed the execution along with three others due to the questionable procedure.
The judge referred to the government’s use of pentobarbital during executions as unconstitutional, stating that it “poses an unconstitutionally significant risk of serious pain.”

Pentobarbital is a short-acting tranquilizer that causes death by respiratory arrest when used in high doses.
Evidence from other inmates’ execution, who received the controlled substance, indicates signs “flash pulmonary edema,” Chutkan said. During the procedure, inmates experience trouble breathing and sensations of strangulation and drowning.
Inmates argue that the protocol used to carry out the executions violates their rights not to have “cruel and unusual punishment inflicted,” according to BBC News.
The judge halted execution orders until legal issues regarding the procedures were resolved.

Trump administration appealed the judge’s order to a higher court, requesting to proceed with the death penalty.
On Monday, the Supreme Court gathered in an overnight court session where they voted 5-4 in Trump’s favor, allowing Lee’s execution to move forward.
FOX News reported that Lee was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m. Tuesday after he was lethally injected with pentobarbital.
Trump administration’s decision to proceed with executions despite the questionable procedure amidst a global pandemic resulted in scrutiny from civil rights groups, as well as the family of Lee’s victims, who did not support the defendant’s execution.

Protesters rallied throughout the city of Terre Haute on Monday with signs that read, “Stop executions now!”
Family members of Lee’s victims also expressed their disapproval of the execution. They added that it is not worth the risk of being exposed to the coronavirus.
81-year-old Earlene Peterson, whose daughter, granddaughter, and son-in-law were murdered by Lee, said she would rather the defendant serve life in jail.

“This not being done in our name; we do not want this,” relative Monica Veillette said.

Federal Judge Rules Georgia’s ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill Unconstitutional!
U.S. District Judge Steve Jones ruled Georgia’s “heartbeat” abortion restriction unconstitutional, permanently voiding the abortion ban, AP News reported.
Georgia petitioned the removal of abortion practices once a “detectable human heartbeat” was identified, with few exceptions. According to a legal counter, a fetal heartbeat can be acquired as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
Many challenged the abortion law indicating that it violates women’s rights and the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment.

The federal judge temporarily blocked Georgia’s 2019 “heartbeat” abortion law last October, prohibiting it.
According to the news outlet, Jones ruled against the state in a suit filed by abortion clinics and an advocacy group.
The federal official eliminated all components of the abortion law, terminating granted personhood of a fetus. The state’s “heartbeat” abortion bill would have given unborn fetuses the same legal rights that citizens have after birth.

According to the AP News, the House Bill 481, anti-abortion law, would have permitted a mother to claim fetus as a dependent on her taxes.
Now, Jones’ new ruling prevents Georgia from enforcing the anti-abortion act, also known as the Living Infants Fairness Equality Act.
The lead claimant of the Atlanta-based group supporting abortion rights for women of color, SisterSong, referred to Judge Jones’ recent ruling as a “huge win for bodily autonomy.”
Monica Simpson, the executive director of SisterSong, said no one should have to live in a world where the government controls their bodies and reproductive decisions.

Pro-Life advocate and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp immediately filed an appeal against Jones’ ruling.

“We will appeal the court’s decision,” Kemp said in a released statement. “Georgia values life, and we will keep fighting for the rights of the unborn.”
