Empire: Lawsuit claims kids were mistreated during filming at youth detention center
A number of Fox media companies have been named as defendants in a class action lawsuit filed Wednesday that claims production on Empire at a juvenile detention center created a harmful atmosphere for its young residents.

The class — which could represent upward of 400 people — seeks unspecified damages and a portion of profits from the show.
The lawsuit was filed by the guardians of two former residents of the Cook County (Illinois) Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, who stayed there last summer. During their time there, Empire shot scenes for the first two episodes of season 2 over six days in June, four days in July, and four days in August, according to the lawsuit. The housed children were forced to stay in their pods while the show was filming, the suit alleges.
“Numerous areas that are essential to the JTDC’s mission of educating and rehabilitating the children housed there — including the JTDC’s school, its facilities for family visits, its only outdoor recreation yard, its library, and its chapel — were placed off limits so that Fox’s agents and employees could use them to stage and film the show,” reads the lawsuit, which was obtained by Deadline.
“The purpose of these lockdowns was to provide Fox with a realistic prison facility to use as the primary set of two highly profitable Empire episodes,” the lawsuit continues. “The children at JTDC, meanwhile, were placed under restrictions more severe than those governing many adult jails.”

Empire began season 2 last September with a monstrous 16.2 million viewers for its premiere and 13.7 million for episode 2. The lawsuit alleges 30-second ad buys for each episode cost $750,000 and $600,000, respectively.
In addition to various Fox companies, the lawsuit names Cook County, and JTDC superintendent Leonard Dixon as fellow defendants.

Fox declined to comment on the lawsuit. The plaintiffs’ lawyers and Cook County did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mary J. Blige Records ‘The View’ Theme Song
Mary J. Blige has new music on the way, but in the meantime the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul lends her talents to ABC’s long-running daytime talk show The View.
Making a strong message, the R&B songstress unleashes a commanding song titled, “World’s Gone Crazy,” as the new theme for the show’s upcoming 20th season.

Penned by Diane Warren, the song allows the recently divorced singer to lightheartedly address the world’s issues. “The world’s gone crazy / I think there’s only one thing to do / I think that we should go crazy too,” she sings.
“The View’s” latest panel appears all over the video with vets Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar joined by Raven-Symoné, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Candace Cameron Bure, Jedediah Bila, and Paula Faris.

MJB will appear live on “The View” during its season premiere week of Sept. 6 to perform the song.

Hip Hop News: Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa Sued Over Concert Railing Collapse
Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa are facing a lawsuit from 17 people, who sustained injuries during their “High Road Summer Tour” in New Jersey earlier this month.

Over 40 concertgoers and venue employees were injured and many were hospitalized after a railing gave out at the New Jersey venue, BB&T Pavilion. Upon the collapse, fans fell from an elevated area about 10 feet high, many piling on one another as they fell to the concrete.
The injuries varied. One person claims they suffered a fractured spine, according to TMZ.

The lawsuit, which names Live Nation as a defendant, claims Snoop and Wiz influenced fans to stampede, causing a collapse. The rappers are quoted as saying: “Everybody in the motherfucking grass bring your ass down here,” prior to the incident. The lawsuit also claims “shoddy repairs” were made on the barrier in the last year.
Meanwhile, the “High Road” continues. Tonight, the run, which also features guests Jhené Aiko, Kevin Gates, Casey Veggies, and DJ Drama, is set to stop in Phoenix before hitting several cities and coming to a close on Sept. 2 in Auburn.

Prince’s Paisley Park Will Open For Tours In October
Paisley Park, the private estate and studio complex of the late rock superstar Prince, will open for daily public tours starting Oct. 6, the trust company overseeing his estate announced Wednesday, and the company that runs Elvis Presley’s Graceland will manage it.

Bremer Trust said in a statement that millions of Prince fans will get the chance to tour the 65,000-square-foot complex in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, where Prince collapsed in an elevator and died of an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl in April.
“Opening Paisley Park is something that Prince always wanted to do and was actively working on,” Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, said in the statement. “Only a few hundred people have had the rare opportunity to tour the estate during his lifetime. Now, fans from around the world will be able to experience Prince’s world for the first time as we open the doors to this incredible place.”

The tours will be run by Graceland Holdings, which has overseen Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1982, according to the museum’s business plan. Graceland, where Presley died in 1977, has welcomed more than 20 million visitors since opening to the public, averaging over 600,000 annually in recent years. Graceland is providing the initial funds for capital improvements and operating costs.
Besides being the music star’s home, Paisley Park has been “the center of Prince’s creative endeavors” since its opening in 1985, Nelson and other siblings said in an additional statement.
The plan says the tours will include studios where Prince recorded, produced and mixed most of his biggest hits, and the soundstage where he rehearsed for tours and hosted exclusive private concerts. Also featured will be thousands of artifacts from his personal archives, “including iconic concert wardrobe, awards, musical instruments, artwork, rare music and video recordings, concert memorabilia, automobiles and motorcycles.”
Tickets go on sale online only on Friday at 2 p.m. CDT. Standard tickets will cost $38.50, but VIP tours will be offered for small groups priced at $100 or more. Tours will last about 70 minutes, starting every 10 minutes, and each group is expected to include 25-30 guests. Graceland officials expect 1,500 to 2,000 guests on peak days. No walk-up sales will be allowed.
The plan requires rezoning approval from the city, which posted documents about the plan on its website. The planning commission hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20 and the City Council will consider it Oct 3.

“Chanhassen will be pleased to demonstrate to the thousands of visitors to Paisley Park the same hospitality and respect that Prince enjoyed during his time in Chanhassen,” Mayor Denny Laufenburger said in a statement.

Prince, 57, left no known will. The judge overseeing the case has not ruled on who his heirs will be. But court filings indicate they’ll likely include Tyka Nelson and five half-siblings because Prince was divorced, his parents are dead and he had no confirmed children. Bremer Trust said the family supports the museum plan. The court has not ruled on whether a woman and girl who say they’re Prince’s niece and grandniece are entitled to share in the estate, which Bremer Trust has said could be worth up to $300 million.
The criminal investigation is continuing. Some of the pills taken from Paisley Park after his death were counterfeit drugs that actually contained fentanyl — a synthetic opioid 50 times more powerful than heroin, an official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Sunday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, said records show Prince had no prescription for any controlled substances in the state of Minnesota in the 12 months before he died. Authorities are still investigating how Prince obtained the drugs.

Oh? 50 Cent’s Aunt Traumatized after Seeing Penis on ‘Power’
Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson is adamant that he didn’t approve his penis being show on a recent episode of his hit series, Power. This week, the 41-year-old rapper turned actor discussed the controversy while on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He does admit that he was aware of the scene, but thought it wouldn’t be so x-rated.
"I knew it was there, but in the original clips, it was darker. It wasn’t on, like, a big screen, like a life-sized version. It wasn’t like, an accident. Courtney was like, ‘I didn’t want to show it to you in the beginning because I didn’t think you needed to see it at that point … You just gotta take one for the team.’"

50 adds that his aunt was NOT a fan of the scene either. OH WELLZ he’ll be aiight!

The singer and actress, 47, and her longtime boyfriend Beau 'Casper' Smart, 29, are no longer dating, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"Jennifer and Casper have split," the source says. "They have not been together for a few weeks."
"It wasn't anything dramatic and they were on good terms – it just came to a natural end," the source adds. "They will remain friends and they see each other, but they are not together. It was very amiable."

A rep for Smart declined to comment on the split, while a rep for Lopez had no comment.
Jennifer Lopez and Beau 'Casper' Smart Have Split, Says Source: 'It Wasn't Anything Dramatic'| Breakups, Music News, People Picks, Casper Smart, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony
Rumors of Lopez and Smart's romance first began circulating in late 2011. At the time, a source told PEOPLE it was "a fun fling" and "not meant to turn into anything more." But the Shades of Blue star and the actor and creative director stayed together – speaking openly about their relationship in July 2012.

"She's sweet, funny, nice, easygoing and gracious," Smart said of Lopez in March. "You can't ask for anything more. She's beautiful."
While they have been on-again and off-again in the past, they have mostly kept their romance out of the spotlight.
"We don't really go out very much," he explained. "We both don't drink, we don't do any drugs, smoking, pills or any of the craziness. We don't get wrapped up in the Hollywood life that can chew you up and spit you out. I've seen it happen a million times."
The couple have lately been spotted together in Las Vegas – getting cozy on Lopez's birthday party in on July 24. Smart even attended her hit Caesar's Palace show on Aug. 13 – alongside Lopez's ex-husband Marc Anthony and his model girlfriend Shannon de Lima.
A few days later, on Aug. 16, Smart was spotted out in West Hollywood, after dining at Craig's Restaurant with former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger and Modern Family star Sarah Hyland.
Lopez previously told PEOPLE and EW's editorial director Jess Cagle that Smart has a big role in the lives of her 8-year-old, Max and Emme.
She balanced the relationship between Smart and Anthony by putting her kids' interests first.

"My relationship with them – our references are always in reference to the kids. What's best for them, what's good for them, let's talk this way in front of them... Once they're happy, they just add happiness and joy into the home and then everything else kind of goes from there."

Zara Sued For Using Euro Pricing To Trick You Into Paying More For Clothes
Them prices way too high, you need to cut it!
Zara has been slapped with a $5 million+ class action suit over their pricing practices. According to the suit filed by Devin Rose in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, often times Zara only lists euro pricing in their stores and websites, which can be quite confusing to customers in the United States. Then, according to the suit, when customers get to the counter they're being charged MORE than the conversion rate. To put it bluntly, there's a likely chance that you paid more at the counter, unknowingly, all because the store played on the fact that you don't know how to convert currency.

Devin Rose noticed this discrepancy after purchasing three shirts at the Zara in Sherman Oaks. Each shirt was marked at €9.95, which means they should have cost roughly $11.26 a piece. However, when he got to the counter, Rose was charged  $17.90 per shirt. That's a nearly 60% markup.
If the lawsuit goes through, Us Weekly says that anyone who has purchased items from Zara and may have gone through the same ordeal, can join in on the class action suit.

Zara has since released a statement, denying claims that they are using unlawful practices.
"Zara USA vehemently denies any allegations that the company engages in deceptive pricing practices in the United States," a spokesperson told The Fashion Law in a statement. "While we have not yet been served the complaint containing these baseless claims, we pride ourselves in our fundamental commitment to transparency and honest, ethical conduct with our valued customers. We remain focused on providing excellent customer service and high-quality fashion products at great value for our customers. We look forward to presenting our full defense in due course through the legal process."

Will Birth of a Nation be the Death of Nate Parker’s Career?
Is the Oscar run for Birth of a Nation in jeopardy? Possibly. Several events have been cancelled amid Nate Parker’s controversial rape case that hit the headlines once promo for the slave revolt film picked up. Get the latest inside…

Things aren’t looking good for Birth of a Nation. The slave revolt film about Nat Turner created, directed and produced by Nate Parker is being pulled from film festivals amid all the media attention on Nate’s sketchy past. The Hollywood actor was accused of raping a woman in 1999 while he was a student at Penn State. While he was cleared on all charges in 2001, Nate tried to jump the gun, so to speak, reaching out to the media for interviews, seemingly trying to have his side of the story put out there before folks started speculating, but it seems to have backfired.

Since the whirlwind of controversy unfolded, we’re now seeing the repercussions of it all. And it’s hurting his new film.
The American Film Institute has axed a planned screening and Q&A with Nate that was scheduled to go down this Friday, according to Deadline. AFI dean Jan Schuette make the announcement in a note to the film school’s fellows that reads,
“I have been the recipient of many different passionate points of view about the screening, and I believe it is essential that we discuss these issues together –messenger and message, gender, race and more—before we see the film. Next week, we will be scheduling a special moderated discussion so we may explore these issues together as artists and audience.”
It's unclear if or when they will do the screening at a later date.
Following AFI pulling a screening, the Toronto International Film Festival has followed suit. The film was supposed to be screened several times throughout the festival, but the film is not listed anywhere on the full schedule out this morning.
A spokeswoman for the festival told Deadline, “That’s definitive, it’s definitely not going to happen.”
Nate was also supposed to present the film at several colleges in Toronto, but that’s no longer happening either.
While Nate will be absent from those events, Fox Searchlight, which paid a whopping $17.5 million for the film at the Sundance Film Festival, announced he will join the cast for press junket interviews in Toronto on the weekend of September 10th -11th.

Actor and social activist Harry Belafonte is weighing in on the controversy. In an interview with the Associated Press, the 89-year-old actor called Nate “a winner” and "a very bright young man."
While he says he doesn’t know what the facts are or what the truth is, he feels the movie shouldn’t be punished because of what happened in Nate's personal life.  He's also suspicious of the timing of everything.

Below are a few quotes for his interview:
"It's interesting because it's coming out the same time the film's coming out. Of all the stories you can tell, why are you telling this story? And if he was somebody who had committed a crime and got away with it, but he faced the justice system," Belafonte said.
"The fact that (the system) may have screwed up, the fact that it didn't really take care of justice, the fact that he should have been punished or whatever is history. The fact is that he was confronted and then he did go through the process. Why are you bringing this up now? What has he done that requires this kind of animus?"
"How do I put it in a perspective that helps me with greater clarity understand why this is the consequence of something he's done by getting this high profile, 'cause this film is touching a lot of consciousness. Why isn't that the story?" Belafonte asked.

"And is this going to be the price that young black women and men pay for making films of substance?" he continued. "Are they going to dig in and get dirt instead of fruit? What are we doing here? And where is the voice that defends him if he in fact is worthy of defending?"

So what are your thoughts? Has this case, which Nate attempted to get ahead of by calling up press to speak about it, tarnished the film's run for an Oscar?

Britney Spears TV Movie Set at Lifetime
Lifetime is jumping on the Britney Spears bandwagon.
Days ahead of the pop star's latest record release, the female-skewing cable network has set a TV movie biopic focused on the singer,
Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar!) will star as Spears in Britney, which will detail what Lifetime described as the "tumultuous true story" of her rise to fame, fall from grace and triumphant resurrection.
The two-hour movie will follow Spears' early career as a young girl from Louisiana and her relationship and breakup with Justin Timberlake as well as her personal struggles following her parents' divorce. Also set to be examined are her marriages to Jason Alexander, Kevin Federline and her downfall that saw her lose custody of her sons before she rebuilt her career and proved herself to be a force in entertainment.
Britney will be produced by Asylum Entertainment (The Kennedys, Ring of Fire). Anne-Marie Hess will pen the script with Leslie Libman (Manson's Lost Girls) directing. Exec producers include Steve Michaels, Jonathan Koch and Joan Harrison. Production is set to begin Sept. 19 in Vancouver for a 2017 premiere.
