The Daily Buzz for Oct 1

Viola Davis on Health, Love, and Resilience  on the cover of Web MD
The actress reflects on her latest role (in "Won't Back Down"), the importance of self care, and the joys of becoming a mom later in life.
Whoever said, "You can have it all -- you just can't have it all at one time," has never met Viola Davis. In the last year alone, the 47-year-old actor has soared professionally and personally. Named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, she also celebrated two Screen Actors Guild awards, a Golden Globe nomination, and her second Oscar nomination, thanks to her stunning turn in The Help last year. And she became a mother for the first time when she and her husband, actor Julius Tennon, adopted a baby girl named Genesis.

No one could be more surprised by her success -- or stamina -- than Davis herself, who sounds just like any other exhausted new mother trying to balance family and career with a semblance of self-preservation. "I'm tired all the time," she says with a laugh. "There's no space in my brain anymore. I don't have time to be creative or to focus on myself. But I'm also more alive than I have ever been."

She's busier, too, at an age when most leading ladies see their careers begin to slow down. Davis has completed three movies since The Help, including this month's Won't Back Down. Co-starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, she plays a teacher fighting to transform an inner-city school. "You can see the character go on a life journey," Davis says of her role. "I think she is a person we are all familiar with, especially when you reach midlife. By the time you're my age, life has gotten to you. You are at a fork in the road, and you're trying to find out what makes you tick again."

YES VICK-TORIOUS! EAGLES BEATS GIANTS 19-17
Man oh Man doesn't that LeSean McCoy comes up big when it counts? Maybe LeSean McCoy just wanted to stay loose. Maybe he was sending a little message to the Eagles coaching staff, something like: Getting bored over here, guys!
Another offensive drive had just fizzled. McCoy watched it from an unwelcome spot on the sideline. On first down, rookie back Bryce Brown was stopped for no gain. On second, rookie wide receiver Damaris Johnson lost a yard on a draw play, one of those too-cute plays that makes the coaches feel like they're breaking new ground.
That brought up third-and-11. The Giants blitzed and Michael Vick threw the ball too deep for DeSean Jackson. McCoy turned around and walked over to the stationary bike at the far left end of the Eagles bench, jumped on and started pedaling.

If McCoy was sending a message, it just might have been received by Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg. From that drive on, the Eagles offensive masterminds managed to find ways to get the football to their best player.
McCoy touched the ball five times on the 11-play drive that finally woke up the Linc's scoreboard operator late in the first half. He didn't make the big play - that was Michael Vick's pass to an embarrassingly open DeSean Jackson - but he caught a pass for 12 yards and ran once for 6 yards.
The Giants defense, which had pressured Vick relentlessly, suddenly had to account for McCoy and it made all the difference.

This shouldn't qualify as a big deal. But it did for reasons that are all-too-obvious to longtime observers of Reid's Eagles. Last week in Arizona, with Vick under blistering pressure, the Eagles just kept dialing up pass plays. They might as well have tossed blood in the water while Vick was being attacked by sharks.
After the game, Reid acknowledged that with "hindsight," it might have been a good idea to run the ball more than five times (against 25 pass calls). There was simply no way to anticipate that a voracious Arizona defense might blitz a lot against a turnover-prone quarterback missing Jeremy Maclin and 40 percent of his offensive line. A couple days later, Mornhinweg scoffed at all that run/pass ratio chatter and said the Eagles were always going to be aggressive.

Translation: We'll be chucking and ducking against the G-Men Sunday, boys. And they were. Until, once again, it became clear that Vick's football (and maybe actual) life expectancy was again at risk. Last week, Reid and Mornhinweg made the fatal error of waiting until the second half, with a 24-0 deficit, before adjusting. This time, they figured it out in time - perhaps while McCoy was practicing for the Tour de France.
This is not uniquely an Eagles thing, by the way. The Cardinals sabotaged their opening drive last week with a gimmicky wildcat play. The Giants ran an adorable little shovel pass to short-circuit one early possession. They, too, failed to slow the Eagles' pass rush by varying the play calling in the first half.
When the Eagles came out for the third quarter this week, they were up 7-3 instead of trailing 24-0. The difference? No turnovers.
So when they leaned on McCoy this time, it was more than just a desperate way to keep Vick alive. It was a way to give the Eagles control of an important NFC East game.

That first drive of the second half was a thing of beauty. McCoy's first two runs went for no gain and 4 yards. The third, a blast around right end, went for 34. On the very next play, he came right back for 22 more yards, all the way to the Giants' 1-yard line.
Those of us who think the Eagles get too fancy at the 1 are in no position to criticize the play calling. McCoy ran three times, twice to the right side and once to the left. The Giants stopped him three times and the Eagles kicked a field goal.
That red zone whiff looked awfully big when the Giants came back to take a 17-16 lead with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter. It was going to take another late drive - the third in four games - for the Eagles to have a chance to win.
Not only did they drive the length of the field for the game-winning field goal, they ate nearly 5 minutes of clock and forced the Giants to burn timeouts on defense. McCoy ran the ball five times on the drive for 32 yards, finished with 123 yards on 23 carries.
The Giants made it interesting, if you consider an attack of hypertension in the final minute as interesting. But make no mistake. Their final drive was made that much harder because of the time consumed by McCoy's runs.
No hindsight necessary here. Instead of taking McCoy out of the game themselves, the Eagles forced the Giants to try to do it. Once he got off the bike, they had no chance.

GO EAGLES #alwaysbelieveingreen!!!!!

Kirk Franklin is the Richest Man in Gospel Music
When we think of Gospel music, most of the time we don’t immediately think of big houses, fine cars, and a lot of money. But the industry is still entertainment with a huge fellowship and a lot of money.
But who is the richest man in gospel? Well, that would be Kirk Franklin who’s net worth is at a whopping $8.5 million, according to therichest.org. Yeah that’s some nice money to have in your bank account.
The multi-talented songwriter and director first stepped on the scene in the early 90s, backed by his huge family of a choir. He was different, though. His music was just far enough away from traditional to catch the attention of secularists. But it hinted the right amount of praise and sermon to remind listeners of the gospel message.

His debut album sold over a million copies and has won multiple awards, including a few Grammys, since. I wonder does it include that porn collection?

50 Cent Launches His Own Investigation Into Chris Lighty's Death, Chris' Will Raises Eyebrows
When Violator, Inc. founder Chris Lighty was found dead of an apparent suicide last month, people close to Chris and throughout the industry were shocked.  While suicides are rarely predictable, this case appeared totally out of the ordinary for someone like the industry exec.

After a second autopsy was ordered by Chris' family, it was performed by former NY Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Baden, and results were found to be "inconclusive".  It is no question that a gun shot was the cause of death.  But tests are still pending to determine if the shots were self-inflicted or not.
Now, 50 Cent has hired a high powered private investigation firm, at the request of Chris' mother, to look further into the case.
What has raised even more eyebrows is what was in Chris' will.  The final document was obtained by Fox 5 in NY.

Check out Fox's report HERE:
New York News | NYC Breaking News

Chris willed his wife, Veronica Lighty, everything.  Plus, he left a $1.6 mill trust to his kids.  Interestingly, many believed Veronica and Chris were divorcing years ago when she filed papers.  But just recently, she made it known that she retracted those papers a few weeks later.
Except for a fund set aside for his children, the will says if he is survived by his wife, "I give my entire residuary estate, real and personal, to her."

That's a lot of power and many in the industry are questioning a few things. …STAY TUNED!!!

Is there BEEF on the set of R&B DIVAS????
While TV One’s popular reality show, ‘R&B Divas’ continues, apparently drama behind-the-scenes does as well. Last week, we shared a story suggesting that one of the cast members, Nicci Gilbert-Daniels (formerly of Brownstone) was being fired and would not be featured on season two of the show. According to the rumor, there was buzz that she may be replaced by Kelly Price. That rumor has adamantly denied by Nicci’s camp. Fast forward to the present day, an intense episode aired, with a bit of emotional drama involving Nicci.

What happened? In a scene where all five women are gathered at Faith Evans’ apartment for drinks and massages, KeKe Wyatt reveals that she’s going to have some follow-up sessions with her psychologist to work through her life issues.  During the scene, Nicci gets upset and declares that the conversation was inappropriate to have over drinks and yells are her fellow cast mates, Monifah and Syleena Johnson.

Now, while this was airing, twitter exchanges between Nicci, her publicist (J. Charles) and the show’s executive producer (Phil Thornton) ensued. In short, Nicci’s publicist suggested that editing had a lot to do with why the scene happened that way, while the show’s producer quickly replied that they only use what the talent provides–even threatened to release ‘raw footage’ from the episode. Nicci also chimed in. Peep their twitter exchange below.
I’d say there is  DRAMA!

42% of Black women will never marry. Being Mary Jane Review
WOW……42% of Black women will never marry.

This shocking statistic is the premise behind Being Mary Jane, an upcoming series on BET. The stunning Gabrielle Union plays Mary Jane Paul a successful TV news anchorwoman who falls into that 42% statistic. The hour-long pilot opened up the 16th Annual UrbanWorld Film Festival held in Midtown Manhattan.
Creator, executive producer and writer Mara Brock Akil has been working on Being Mary Jane for years and wanted to show the struggles and pains of a woman who, on the outside, looks as if she has it all but yearns to find love, happiness and a family of her own.

Paul juggles the pressure of hosting her own news format talk show with sinking ratings during the day and comes home to a beautiful but empty house at night. Pual is devoted to a family that doesn’t share her drive or determination. Her mother is battling cancer, her younger brother is a career college student and part time marijuana dealer. She is also saddled with the responsibility of being the big sister to her older brother played, by the debonair Richard Brooks, financially supporting him and his growing family.
Brock Akil, the creator behind the hit show Girlfriends and the executive producer of BET’s The Game, is a genius at creating characters we care about long after the credits roll. Akil, who’s husband Salim Akil directed the pilot, takes us on an hour-long wild ride in Paul’s life that includes the ups, downs and a masturbation scene at the office.

Being Mary Jane, originally titled Single Black Female, is a story millions of women can relate to. Oftentimes women make huge sacrifices for a successful career or refuse to settle or lower standards when finding a mate. Union plays Paul with such an open rawness and realness that the successful actress dating a superstar basketball player disappears; she is Park, a woman who is alone and lonely and questions her decisions on why and how she ended up alone and lonely. When she pulls the hood of her sweatshirt over her head and cries, we cry thinking about our own failed relationships When she finds out the man she’s been sleeping with for months is married and sprays him with the garden hose, we cheer thinking about how we got rid of our cheating mates.

As Brock Akil said, “Fasten your seat belts!”
