#MAGFAB: Vanessa Williams For People - August 5th 2024
Vanessa Williams is living proof that your past doesn't define your future. "I'm still here and I'm still standing. I'm still feeling strong," the 61-year-old actress, singer and former beauty queen tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story, spending her one day off reflecting on her life at a stately English manor near her latest gig.
These days the Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives alum is stepping into the fictional stilettos of yet another high-powered woman, reimagining Meryl Streep’s steely fashion magazine mogul Miranda Priestly in London’s upcoming musical adaptation of the hit 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.
"To create a role in a new musical has been one of my dreams," says Williams, who's also gearing up to release Survivor, her first album in 15 years, while working on a documentary about her life as well as a new reality show. "I'm doing what I love," she says.
It's a level of achievement and bliss that 40 years ago might have seemed unattainable, given her remarkable, rather harrowing introduction to the spotlight.
Williams stepped onto the world stage as the first Black woman to be crowned Miss America at the 1984 competition. As she was celebrated by many for being a role model and making history, she also had to smile and wave in the face of racist vitriol being spewed behind the scenes. Then, 10 months into her historic reign, it all shockingly came crashing down.
On July 13, 1984, she learned that nude photos she’d taken years prior and under the promise of anonymity, had been sold and would soon be published in Penthouse magazine, instantly tarnishing her pristine image.
“There was a tremendous amount of onus, pressure, shame, judgment,” she says, thinking back on the scandal that dominated the world’s news cycle for weeks. Had there been an internet to break back then, it would have shattered to pieces. “I took all that on as a 21 year old,” she recalls. “It was global. You can fail quietly, but that was a worldwide fail.”
Williams, however, has shown the world what it’s like to recover after falling from precipitous heights, and she hopes young people can learn from her resilience. She also has a new perspective on what happened way back then.
She was still in her teens when she posed for the photos in 1982 while working as a receptionist for a photographer at a New York modeling agency. The photos sent to Penthouse featured Williams and another female model, who were both told they’d appear only in silhouette.
“I look back at my 19-to 20-year-old self and think, ‘Oh my God you were so naive, so trusting, so vulnerable,’ ” she says. “In your mind you think, ‘I’m old, I know what I’m doing.’ I give myself grace now, but as a young adult, I beat myself up, like ‘I should have known better.’ ”
As for what got her through the throes of that experience, "Luckily I have a tremendous family," she says of leaning on mom Helen, dad Milton and brother Chris, among others in her inner circle back then.
A mother of four adult children, she's recently considered the experience through the lens of her kids. "They're all older than I was now, but the fact that I became famous at 20 years old relative to their lives and having death threats and having to go through breaking a huge hurdle and what the repercussions of that was," she says.
"[They're like] 'Wow, how did you handle all this mom at 20?' " says Williams. "Then I look back at my twenty year old self and say, 'My God, I was a baby.' "
In 2015 Miss America publicly apologized to Williams for their part in pushing for her resignation amid the scandal. With all she's accomplished personally and professionally over the years, she's not the least bit bitter. On the contrary, she says, "I'm really happy."

#RHOA: Phaedra Parks’ Ex-Husband Apollo Nida Arrested for Assault After Wife Calls Cops
Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks’ ex-husband, Apollo Nida, was arrested after his wife Sherien Almufti accused him of getting physical with her, In Touch can exclusively reveal.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Sherien called police on Apollo, 45, on March 11.
The police report said Sherien, listed as Sherien Copes, told officers that she had just came home from a bar with friends and had three alcoholic drinks. She said they started having a verbal argument about how “they were cheating on each other.”
Sherien said during the argument Apollo showed her a video of her kissing another man.
The report said she said Apollo “pulled her by the hair and pushed by against a refrigerator.”
Sherien said the two proceeded to get into a “scuffle.” She said she ran outside and called for help.
She said she went back inside to get her phone and Apollo had left.
However, they said it did not show the physical altercation. Apollo showed up to the home and spoke to officers.
He claimed that while they were arguing, he tried to take her phone from her. He said that while trying to take her phone, she balled up onto the ground to protect her phone, and Apollo said he took her phone.
He said she ran outside to call for help but he came outside to give her back the phone. Officers said Sherien declined medical attention at the scene.
The report noted she did not have any marks or bruises that showed she was in a physical altercation.

Apollo was placed into custody and charged with domestic violence and simple assault.
He was transported to the local jail and processed. Jail records obtained by In Touch show Apollo posted a $3,000 bond and was released hours after being booked.
Prosecutors charged Apollo with one misdemeanor count of simple battery — family violence. A hearing took place last month but the court records do not indicate if Apollo entered a plea or has hired an attorney.

Sherien tells In Touch, “It was a huge blow out between a married couple that has brought us much closer since then. We have worked through our issues and have been going to couples therapy. The end.”
Last year, Apollo asked a court to terminate his probation in his federal criminal case early.
In 2014, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for bank fraud and identity theft.
He was facing up to 30 years in prison before reaching a plea deal.
Phaedra filed for divorce while Apollo was locked up.
Apollo was sentenced to serve an additional five years on probation after his release in 2019.
In his plea, Apollo argued he had turned his life around. Prosecutors opposed the request.
The judge ended up denying the request. As In Touch previously reported, Phaedra is in talks to return to Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Celine Dion made a triumphant return Friday with a very public performance: closing out the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony from the Eiffel Tower.
Nearly two years after revealing her stiff person syndrome diagnosis, Dion belted Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” (“Hymn to Love”) as the finale of the roughly four-hour spectacle. Her appearance had been teased for weeks, but organizers and Dion’s representatives had refused to confirm whether she was performing.
On a page dedicated to Dior’s contributions to the opening ceremony, the media guide referred to “a world star, for a purely grandiose, superbly scintillating finale.”
Dion had been absent from the stage since 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic forced the postponement of her tour to 2022. That tour was eventually suspended in the wake of her diagnosis.
The rare neurological disorder causes rigid muscles and painful muscle spasms, which were affecting Dion’s ability to walk and sing. In June, at the premiere of the documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” she told The Associated Press that returning required therapy, “physically, mentally, emotionally, vocally.”
“So that’s why it takes a while. But absolutely why we’re doing this because I’m already a little bit back,” she said then.
Even before the documentary’s release, Dion had taken steps toward a comeback. In February, she made another surprise appearance, at the Grammy Awards, where she presented the final award of the night to a standing ovation.
For Friday’s performance, Dion’s pearl outfit was indeed designed by Dior. Speaking on French television, the Paris organizing committee’s director of design and costume for ceremonies, Daphné Bürki, recalled Dion’s enthusiasm for the opportunity.
“When we called Celine Dion one year ago she said yes straight away,” Bürki said.

Dion is not actually French — the French Canadian is from Quebec — but she has a strong connection to the country and the Olympics. Dion’s first language is French, and she has dominated the charts in France and other French-speaking countries. (She also won the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest with a French-language song ... representing Switzerland.) And early in her English-language career — even before “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic” — she was tapped to perform “The Power of The Dream,” the theme song for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Dion’s song choice also evoked a sports connection: Piaf wrote it about her lover, boxer Marcel Cerdan. Cerdan died soon after she wrote the song, in a plane crash.

#HipHopNews: Accused PnB Rock Teen Shooter Deemed Mentally Unfit for Trial, Judge Rules
The accused teen shooter charged in the murder of PnB Rock has been deemed unfit to stand trial.
Judge Rules Accused PnB Rock Shooter Mentally Unfit for Trial
According to a Rolling Stone report, published on Friday (July 26), the alleged teen shooter who shot and killed PnB Rock nearly two years ago has been found unfit to stand trial. The young man appeared in court on Friday wearing a bright orange detention center uniform during his hearing.
Commissioner Sharonda P. Bradford said the teen, whose name is being withheld, was receiving various services while in detention but was not competent to stand trial due to lacking the mental capacity to follow a criminal proceeding.
"The recommendation is that the previous orders remain,” Commissioner Bradford stated during the hearing. "The proceedings remain suspended, remediation continues." A follow-up hearing was scheduled for August.
According to prosecutors, when the young man was 17 years old, he walked into a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles restaurant in South Los Angeles on Sept. 12, 2022 and fired multiple shots at PnB Rock, born Rakim Allen. The teen allegedly snatched several pieces of jewelry from the rapper's neck while his terrified fiancée, Stephanie Sibounheuang, attempted to assist Rock, who was lying lifeless on the floor.
The boy's father, Freddie Tone, and stepmother Shauntel Trone were also charged in PnB Rock's murder. He has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
Shauntel was charged with being an accessory after the fact and eventually accepted a plea deal. Another man, Tremont Jones, who is accused of tipping off Freedie and the teen of PnB Rock's location, pleaded not guilty after being charged with two counts of robbery, conspiracy to rob the rapper and illegally possessing a firearm as a felon.
Meanwhile, during the juvenile court hearing, the ongoing PnB Rock murder trial was held concurrently in the same building.
During the trial, jurors were presented with a series of gruesome images depicting bloodstains of Rock's blood smeared and spattered across the walls and floor within Roscoe's establishment. One of the first police officers to arrive on the scene described rendering aid to the late rapper as he took his final breaths.
The officer also testified that when fightfighters lift Rock onto the gurney to take him to the hospital, the rapper had a gun tuck in his waistband on his back.
The placement of the gun on Rock's back is noteworthy in light of what Trone's lawyer argued last January that his client's son may have fired out of fear. "From the video camera in the restaurant, it is unclear what Mr. Rakim was doing with his hands after he was approached by Mr. Trone’s son. [The son] could have been in fear for his own life," defense lawyer Winston McKesson wrote in his motion to dismiss charges.
Additionally, the medical examiner, Dr. Juan M. Carrillo also appeared in court, testifying that PnB Rock was shot three times: once in his chest and twice in his back.
Carrillo said that one of the bullets actually entered the rapper's body on his upper-right back and exited out his front and re-entered his body at the neck, which fractured his jaw. The prosecutor asked whether the gunshot wounds to the back were consistent with the shooter standing over PnB Rock. Carrillo said he wasn't sure.

Beyoncé Introduces 2024 Team USA Olympians in Epic Video: ‘The Very Best of Who We Are’
Beyoncé is giving the 2024 Olympic Games a big boost! On Friday, July 26, the 32-time Grammy winner, 42, surprised millions of viewers when she introduced Team USA during NBCUniversal’s primetime coverage of the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony.
In the roughly 2-minute and 30-second clip, Beyoncé remixed her single “YA YA” from her Cowboy Carter album with the help of some of the best athletes representing the U.S.
“Hello, girls,” the superstar said.
“Hello, Beyoncé,” members of the women’s gymnastics team — including Jade Carey, Sunisa “Suni” Lee, Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles and Hezly Rivera — replied.
The pro athletes were decked out in navy blue bodysuits, ready for competition. Next up was the men's gymnastics team, which includes Fred Richard, Brody Malone, Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik.
“Oui oui, Paris,” the “Jolene” artist said, adding, “We snappin.’”
The Houston native also wore a cowgirl hat and a statement kaftan with the Olympic rings on the back. Underneath was a white bodysuit with “USA” written in blue and outlined in red across her chest.
“We wanna welcome you to the 2024 Summer Olympic games! Ah!” Beyoncé said as the music grew stronger. “On behalf of Team USA, we ‘gon make it do what it do, YA YA! Put them hands together!”
Caeleb Dressel, LeBron James, Katie Ledecky, Noah Lyles, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Sha’Carri Richardson and many more Team USA members made cameos in the clip.
They all clapped and grooved as Beyoncé continued to dance to the track.
“Get a look at America, y’all,” she said. “These hopes and dreams, these superstars that represent us.”
As she talked, more athletes flashed across the screen, some holding the American flag.
“That pride, and that joy, that’s what gets me about this team. And that’s what makes me believe in this team. And that’s why I can’t wait to see what they pull off over these next 16 days. America, give it up for Team USA, the very best of who we are.”
Before the clip ended, there was a video montage of different Olympic qualifiers competing in various sports before they earned their place at the Paris Games.
“What a vision to behold. What a team to believe in. What a night to celebrate,” Beyoncé concluded.
Team USA’s Instagram account dubbed the surprise introduction as the “#Beylympics.”
Earlier in the day, Paris 2024 organizers transformed the River Seine into the world’s biggest stage as nearly 90 boats carrying thousands of athletes from around the world drifted past thousands of spectators for the Opening Ceremony.
Tennis star and 2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff made history as Team USA's youngest flagbearer.

Oprah Winfrey And Gayle King Address Lesbian Rumors: “We’d Tell You!”
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have addressed the longstanding rumor that they are secretly a lesbian couple. Speaking with Melinda French Gates for her Moments That Make Us interview series, the two ladies dispel the myth that they are actually lovers.
“I think we’ve shared pretty much everything and I would have to say, it wasn’t even a matter of navigation,” Winfrey detailed. “You know, for years, people used to say we were gay, and listen, we were up against that forever. And people still may think it.”
“I used to say Oprah, ‘You gotta do a show on this because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday night with people thinking we’re gay,'” King added. “Because if we were gay, we’d tell you!”
The women continued to reflect on their decades together, as the host applauded their “deep, true friendships.”
“I think you’re right Melinda, because one of the things I’ve started to think was maybe people aren’t accustomed to seeing women with this kind of truth bond,” Winfrey explained. “Meaning, the reason why I think our friendship has worked is because Gayle is happier, not happy, happier for me for any kind of success or victory than I am for myself.”

Per Oprah Daily, the two ladies formed an immediate connection as young journalists on the rise. They met in 1976 when Winfrey was an anchor and King was a production assistant at Baltimore’s WJZ station.
One night during a snow storm, Winfrey invited King to spend the night due to dangerous road conditions hindering her from returning home, and that’s where it all began.
“We became friends that first night because for the first time, I met somebody who I felt was like me,” King remembered. “I’d never met anybody like that. Certainly not another Black girl. I grew up in an all-white community.”
“It’s that whole being-the-odd-girl-out thing—we didn’t fit into everybody else’s perception of what it’s like to be a Black girl,” Winfrey added.

Former ‘Empire’ Star Bryshere Gray Arrested In Florida For Trespassing
Bryshere Gray was recently arrested in Florida for trespassing. The 30-year-old former actor and aspiring recording artist, who starred as Hakeem Lyon in six seasons of the hit music drama “Empire,” has had a tough time since the show ended.
Bryshere has been racking up arrests, including driving without a license or insurance, domestic violence, and in July 2020, he reportedly had a standoff with police in Arizona.
Most recently, Bryshere Gray was arrested on Friday, July 26, in Hallandale Beach, Florida, for trespassing in an unoccupied structure or conveyance.
His bond amount is $150. While the charges aren’t as serious as his past ones, Bryshere’s mugshot photo is causing the public to take pause.
Earlier this month, Bryshere took to Instagram and shared a strange video of himself thirst-trapping in the bathroom.

He later deleted the post. I pray he gets the help he needs to get his life back on track because he is a very talented young man.
Wayne Brady Quietly Welcomed A Baby Boy With His Ex
Wayne Brady revealed that he quietly welcomed a baby boy, Val, six months ago. The comedian shared this unexpected news with viewers during the premiere of his Freeform reality show, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix,” on Wednesday.
Brady admitted that the arrival of his son was far from anticipated. “Not on my bingo card,” he confessed. “When I first found out … I was floored. A 51-year-old dad? I didn’t see it coming. So was I happy? No. Because I was in shock.”
Now 52, Wayne finds himself in “uncharted territory” as he co-parents Val with his ex-girlfriend, Tina.
The pair dated on and off during the pandemic before ultimately breaking up.
“How do I co-parent with this person that I am not with and make this work?” Brady pondered.
Brady’s ex-wife, Mandie Taketa, and their 21-year-old daughter, Maile, also had reservations about the new addition to the family.
Mandie, 48, admitted that she and Tina “don’t get along.”
She further elaborated on the timeline of events, explaining, “Tina and Wayne had been broken up a year. Then [his] grandma Val passes away, so we go to her funeral in the Virgin Islands, then we come back. Something happened — you fill in the blank. Then, two weeks later, we get a phone call from Tina that she’s pregnant with Wayne’s baby.”
Maile, who had strong feelings about Tina, was initially kept in the dark about the pregnancy.
“Maile will say she warned Wayne about this happening,” Mandie Taketa shared, adding that she “didn’t make eye contact with Maile for three months” while keeping the secret.
As expected, Maile did not “initially [feel] super happy” about her half-sibling’s arrival and was “worried” about her father.
“Tina does not live her life in complete honesty,” Maile said. “The string of events is suspicious. I don’t enjoy her presence.”
Despite these challenges, Wayne Brady and Mandie Taketa maintain a close relationship.
The pair, who were married from 1999 to 2007, have continued to support each other through various life events.
Mandie moved on with Jason Michael Fordham, and they welcomed son Sundance, now 2, in 2021.
Meanwhile, Wayne, who came out as pansexual last year, has remained a steadfast friend to Mandie, even quarantining with her during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to AllHipHop, Jonathan Hay explained what was going through his head when he decided to drum up the rumor about Rihanna and JAY-Z’s affair. As he puts it, he was angry with JAY-Z at the time and in no way, shape or form was concerned with the repercussions.
“When I executed this controversial publicity and marketing campaign for Rihanna’s debut single, she was an unknown artist and I was hungry for a hit, and I knew that ‘Pon de Replay’ was a special song,” he tells us. “I had direct access to JAY-Z back then from working with Amil, the female rap artist on a couple of JAY-Z’s biggest hit records at the time.

“Industry executive Kevin Skinner, who was in a high-profile legal battle with Whitney Houston, was the person who introduced me to the debut Rihanna project and to one of the ‘Pon de Replay’ producers. I was hired to promote ‘Pon de Replay’ and I wrote Rihanna’s first press release. I devised a plan to pitch Rihanna as JAY-Z’s latest protégé on Def Jam to MTV News. I reached out to my contact at MTV and she published a small news item on Rihanna on March 17, 2005, which was RiRi’s first big press.”
But Hay was baffled by the lack of response. MTV, which was hugely influential back then, failed to spark any more press.
“This initial trigger set everything in motion, and I tried to utilize the MTV press link to promote ‘Pon de Replay’ to other media sources,” he continues. “There was nobody bigger than MTV at that time, but even still, no other press was picking up the ‘Pon de Replay’ story and I was striking out left and right.
“I started to get desperate and I was so angry at JAY-Z as he was more focused on Teairra Marí and there was all this talk that he was pursuing a rapper named Lady Sovereign, who he ended up signing months later. Not to mention, JAY-Z was constantly dissing Amil, who had quit the music industry and was living in North Carolina at the time raising her children.
“So I was like f### JAY-Z, since he won’t give us any attention and he’s being disrespectful to Amil, who was a single mother. I’m going to get his attention and be disrespectful back to JAY-Z, as Rihanna was the best thing on Def Jam by far. I thought JAY-Z was a dirtbag, so I put out the story that JAY-Z was in a love triangle with Rihanna and Beyoncé—and that caught fire, sparked conversation, increased radio airplay, press coverage and other forms of attention. I was in an unapologetic ‘by any means necessary’ state of mind.”
Ryan Reynolds Confirms His Fourth Child Is A Boy
Ryan Reynolds recently shared a heartwarming update about his family, confirming the sex of his fourth child with wife Blake Lively during a touching conversation with John Bell, founder of the non-profit organization Walking 4 Hope. This announcement came days after the "Deadpool & Wolverine" star revealed the name of his youngest child, Olin.
The couple, who already share three daughters - James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4 - welcomed Olin in early 2023, keeping his birth details under wraps until now. Reynolds, moved by Bell's journey of establishing Walking 4 Hope after the tragic death of his son Jake, shared his own experience as a father during an interview posted on social media on July 26.
Jake Bell, a fervent fan of Reynolds' character Deadpool, inspired his father John to create Walking 4 Hope to aid families and young individuals grappling with life's pressures. "What I do now keeps me alive daily because I've made my peace with death. I'm gonna be reunited with him at some point but it damn right ain't now," John said in the interview shared by Reynolds.
Reynolds expressed his gratitude, saying, "The resilience it takes to put one foot in front of the other, as many times as you've done it, and transmute that much grief into something powerfully useful. I'm very grateful that you shared his story." The actor added, "I want to share with you that I too have a son, and if I love him one-tenth as much as you love Jake, I feel like I've done a pretty damn good job."
During the New York City premiere of "Deadpool and Wolverine" on July 22, Reynolds first publicly named his son Olin, thanking his family for their support and presence. "I want to start by saying thank you to my wife, Blake, who is here," Reynolds said.
"I want to thank my kids James, Inez, Betty, Olin, who are here. I hope that, if I'm lucky, this moment will be the most traumatic thing - that is, the contents of this movie - that happens in your wondrous life."
Blake Lively also made a cameo appearance as Lady Deadpool, and their children participated in the film as younger Deadpool variants, underscoring the family's tight-knit bond.

Sam Rubin Wins Posthumous Honor as L.A. Area Emmy Awards Are Announced
Longtime KTLA entertainment anchor Sam Rubin, who died earlier this year, received the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award on Saturday night, given posthumously to recognize his “legacy of more than three decades of entertainment news reporting for KTLA.”
Rubin also won an Emmy in the entertainment news category, for his “KTLA Morning News” coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike last year.
Overall, pubcaster KCET (which now calls itself “PBS SoCal Plus”) dominated with ten wins, including in categories such as culture/history (“Legacy 10 Days In Watts”), L.A. local color (“Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages — Artbound”), independent programming (“Everybody Dance”), crime/social issues (“Bonnie Boswell Presents: Saving Moms”) and more.
The main newscast awards at the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards were split. Unlike last year, when KVEA won all three, this year the prizes were mixed. Spectrum News 1’s “Your Morning on Spectrum News 1” won the morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts; KCAL won daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and KVEA landed evening for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.).
This is now the eighth year in a row that KCET won the most.
KCET was already the leader in Los Angeles Area Emmys nominations, landing 22 this year (down slightly from last year’s 24), thanks to expecially to the locally produced series “Artbound” and its “10 Days in Watts.” Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1 was in second, with 17 — up from 14 last year.
The Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards honor locally produced programs in the categories of crime and social issues, culture and history, the arts, human interest, sports, the environment, and live and breaking news coverage.

Justin Timberlake’s Lawyer Reportedly Filed A Motion To Have The Singer’s DWI Case Dismissed
Is it too late for Justin Timberlake to walk away from his DWI case? On June 17, the “My Favorite Drug” singer was reportedly arrested in Sag Harbor, New York. At the time of the detainment, Timberlake was accused of driving while intoxicated.
However, his lawyer Edward Burke Jr. claims that the charges were false in his statement following the matter. Now, according to TMZ, Burke has filed a motion to get the DWI case dismissed.
In the court documents, Burke argued that the case should be dismissed on the grounds of “accusatory instrument defect.” Essentially, he boldly claimed that the arresting officers made several errors on the paperwork. The main mistake being, listing Timberlake was undoubtedly intoxicated. According to Vanity Fair, Timberlake refused a breathalyzer test three times while maintaining that he only had one drink before being pulled over.
The motion is still being reviewed by a judge and while not decided until a later date. Justin Timberlake is currently on the road as part of his The Forget Tomorrow World Tour. But at this time, his arraignment is scheduled for August 2, where he is expected to attend virtually.

White Women Raise Over $2M During Virtual Fundraiser for Kamala Harris Campaign
*Vice President Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign has been breaking records, with a recent virtual event titled “White Women: Answer the Call” attracting 164,000 participants and raising over $2 million in under an hour.
The Zoom call, featuring notable speakers such as pop star Pink and actress Connie Britton, saw a surge in attendance that overwhelmed the platform, leading to a crash, Atlanta Daily World reports.
“We weren’t kidding when we said we broke Zoom,” said attendee Erin Gallagher when the virtual event resumed. Shannon Watts, the organizer of the fundraiser, posted on social media, “Kamala just broke Zoom again.”
We reported earlier that White women across the globe mobilized to support Harris in the virtual meeting on July 25. The event followed the successful “Win With Black Women” Zoom call, which saw 44,000 participants raise over $1 million for Harris’s campaign. White women sought to replicate the event’s success and gather more support for Harris, and Thursday’s virtual call achieved that goal.
Harris seems poised to secure the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race Sunday and threw his support behind her.
Harris is set to become the first woman of Jamaican and South Asian descent to become a major party nominee.
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” she said in a statement after Biden’s endorsement, NBC News reports.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Haris added.
We reported earlier that Harris debuted her own TikTok account on Thursday to connect with and woo young voters. Her account (@kamalaharris) amassed over 1.6 million within the initial 16 hours.
The first video posted to her account reportedly garnered 2.5 million views in five hours

Warner Bros. Discovery Sue NBA Over New Media Rights Deal With Amazon
A lawsuit was filed Friday in New York County Supreme Court as Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the parent company of TNT, sued the NBA over a matching rights clause in their previous TV contract. This follows the NBA’s announcement earlier this week that they would end their nearly 40-year partnership with TNT.
“We strongly believe this is not just our contractual right, but also in the best interest of fans who want to keep watching our industry-leading NBA content with the choice and flexibility we offer through our widely distributed WBD video-first distribution platforms—including TNT and Max,” said WBD.
TNT analyst and media personality Charles Barkley released a statement this morning criticizing the NBA’s decision. He suggested the split was inevitable.
“Clearly the NBA has wanted to break up with us from the beginning. I’m not sure TNT ever had a chance,” Barkley said in a statement released Friday morning. “TNT matched the money, but the league knows Amazon and these tech companies are willing to pay for the rights when they double in the future. The NBA didn’t want to piss them off.”
This issue has been discussed in NBA circles as the shift in media consumption has led major sports conglomerates to pivot towards streaming services, making traditional sports media consumption less conventional for the average fan. While this makes business sense, it does not benefit the typical consumer.
“It’s a sad day when owners and commissioners choose money over the fans. It just sucks. I just want to thank everyone who has been at Turner for the last 24 years. They are the best people and the most talented, and they deserve better,” Barkley added.
The core issue with the matched contract revolved around “back-end rights,” a common clause in sports rights contracts that allows the current rightsholder to match the contract offer. The NBA argued that WBD’s reach, at a little over 80 million viewers, is significantly less than Amazon’s nearly 200 million viewers.
Another problem within the contract was that WBD would air games on both Max and TNT, rather than streaming the event on one exclusive channel, making it less appealing for the brand. A response from the league is inevitable, and how they handle this situation will be interesting to watch.
