Simone Biles holds a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals, tied with Shannon Miller as the most decorated gymnast of all time. Biles and Miller are also tied for the most Olympic medals won by an American gymnast.
Biles is so happy being airborne. She jumps, dances and flies through the air with a body that is small, powerful and tremendously agile. Given her athletic prowess and complicated personal history in gymnastics, Simone Biles will improve gymnastics forever.
She is not done yet with gymnastics, committed not only to performing — how, where and when is not known yet — but also in her role of bird-dogging the sport on behalf of other young women gymnasts.
These feats don’t happen by accident. “As a child, my mother would take us to her office to write down our short-term and long-term goals on a piece of paper. It is a practice that I maintain, because that list reminds me why I do things,” Biles share with ELLE Espana’s Claudia Saiz Puig.
Simone Biles is notoriously careful about her words and gestures — but not in a way that is artificial or rehearsed. Biles has experienced a great deal of life, and especially as a survivor of sexual violence at the hands of finally imprisoned Larry Nassar, team doctor of the United States women’s national gymnastics team.
On Friday, April 22 of this week [ and not reported in the ELLE Espana interview], attorneys representing Biles and 12 other US women gymnasts filed a legal mechanism in Michigan to request redress under the Federal Tort Claims Act. After filing the claims seeking $130 million in damages from the FBI. a period of six months commences for the parties to reach resolution. If they are unable to find common ground, the women can then sue for personal injury.
These actions come after and the release of a July 2021 report issued by the Justice Department inspector general.
The report found the FBI’s Indianapolis field office first heard from USA Gymnastics in July 2015 about Nassar-related allegations and did nothing. Led by demands from the young women, the sports organization filed a new complaint with the FBI field office in Los Angeles. Agents in LA put more work into the case, but ultimately they also took no action against Nassar.
Ultimately state law enforcement officials in Michigan arrested and charged the sexual predator with sexual assault. Members of the local FBI field office where Nasser committed his crimes only learned of the Nassar allegations through news stories and an investigation launched that year by Michigan State University police.
“Despite credible reports to the FBI, Nassar continued his reign of terror for almost 17 unnecessary months,” Jamie White, an attorney for the 13 women, said Thursday. “In large part, Nassar continued to have access to countless girls on almost a daily basis. An unthinkable and unnecessary number of sexual assaults occurred at the hands of Nassar during that period of time.”
An FBI raid found more than 37,000 images of child pornography in Nassar’s possession; and he pleaded guilty to the possession charge in July of 2017. After serving a sentence of 60 years in federal prison for child pornography, Larry Nassar is scheduled to serve a sentence of 40 to 175 years in Michigan state prison.
Confronted by a breakdown between mind and body, Simone Biles got the ‘Twisties’ at the summer 2021 Tokyo Olympic games. Her confrontation with damage done to her own mental health — and the physiological knowledge that she could easily break her neck if she continued in Olympic competition — gave rise to Biles as a critical voice in a growing international dialogue around the prevalence of mental anxiety and depression in the sports world and beyond.
Manifesting perhaps more courage than ever required in her death-defying routines, Simone Biles returned to Olympic competition in her final scheduled event in Tokyo, winning a bronze medal on the balance beam.
Unable to recover and move forward without a professional at her side, Biles sought expert help in therapy. She explains that the therapy has taught her resilience, to have more courage, to say “no” and to raise her voice for herself more easily.

In a lesson most of us can learn from, Simone Biles says she is better at ignoring “nonsense’, explaining “I have tuned my ears. I stay in my bubble, because I know that I don't want anyone to poison me.”

Parks hasn’t been on The Real Housewives of Atlanta for five seasons. Her fallout with Burruss was the cause of her being booted off the show. She recently threw shade at her fellow cast members, namely her former BFF Kandi Burruss.
Parks says she doesn’t miss being on ‘RHOA’
Parks was famously fired following the season 9 reunion when it was revealed that she was behind a rumor that Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker wanted to drug and have sex with Porsha Williams. Despite fans’ request for Parks to return, Burruss is adamant that she won’t be on the show alongside Parks.
Instead, Parks will be featured on the upcoming second-season mashup of The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip. She’s also featured as a guest on The Real Housewives of Dubai. Parks recently appeared on The Wendy Williams and explained why she doesn’t miss the Bravo franchise.
“I’ve seen her out – I mean, Kandi is a great businesswoman but [our drama] was six years ago. As you well know, I’m yachting in Dubai. So, you know, I’ll leave the girls in Atlanta on the Titanic,” Parks said.
Since leaving the show, Parks has been focused on acting. She also continues working in the lane of social justice.
Meanwhile, Kandi Burruss says the shade-throwing doesn’t bother her. In a recent YouTube ‘Speak On It’ episode, Burruss said of her former friend’s comment: “It’s okay, she’s a professional shade queen, and I don’t even take nothing personal, I don’t even care you know what I mean? It’s like – I don’t care, it’s all good. I’m happy that she happy in her life, honey.”
She also says she doesn’t care about Parks’ fans shading her.
She explained: “And whoever is liking a post where someone is shading me. Have you ever, honestly liked a post and you didn’t realize the person is shading and you realize later?” she asked.
“What I found in my llife is that when people do negative things towards me, I’ve been able to learn how to turn those negatives into some positive dividends honey, so I have become a master at it. So, I don’t care, shade me if you want. You gon’ have to shade me and keep watching me.”

In an interview with Apple Music, Pharrell opened up about the collaboration. “I knew the track was aggressive, and it doesn’t let up,” he said. “So it’s like those are the two. It’s like letting two pit bulls loose. Ravenous. Two ravenous wolves… Tyler went crazy. He had done that verse before he put his last album out.”
And there may be even more music on the way. “I miss it. That’s probably the most I can say,” said The Neptunes hitmaker. “I don’t know if you could tell, just based off of everything that’s been happening. Just, I miss it, Pusha, Jack, Kendrick, this. I’m excited.”
The song arrives ahead of Pharrell’s Something in the Water festival, which will take place in Washington, D.C. on Juneteenth weekend (June 17-19) and stream live on Amazon Music.

Jennifer Hudson Becomes a Member of the Exclusive EGOT Class
At 40 years and nine months, Hudson is the third-youngest person to EGOT.

Jennifer Hudson is in the “Spotlight,” to borrow the title of her 2008 hit. At the 2022 Tonys on Sunday (June 12), Hudson became just the 17th individual to achieve EGOT status. She won as one of a platoon of producers of A Strange Loop, which was named best musical.
At 40 years and nine months, Hudson is the third-youngest person to EGOT. Only Robert Lopez (who was 39 when he completed the awards sweep) and John Legend (who was 39 years and eight months) were younger. Moreover, Hudson is just the third Black EGOT, following Whoopi Goldberg and Legend.
Hudson took her first step toward the EGOT in 2007 when she won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her first feature film, Dreamgirls. She took her second in 2009 when she won a Grammy for best R&B album for her eponymous debut album. (She won a second Grammy eight years later as a performer in a revival of The Color Purple, which won best musical theater album.)
Hudson has never been nominated for a Primetime Emmy, but she received a Daytime Emmy in 2021 as an executive producer of Baba Yaga. The virtual-reality animated film won outstanding interactive media for a daytime program.
Hudson has likewise never been nominated for a Tony Award as a performer. She was passed over for a nod in 2016 her role in The Color Purple. But she won this year as one of 44 individuals or entities who received a producer credit on A Strange Loop.
That’s not a typo (full list below if you find it hard to believe). This points to a problem that has arisen in the EGOT phenomenon – standards are inconsistent from show to show and in some cases too lax. To produce a musical that wins a Tony for best musical, or to co-produce it with a reasonable number of other people, should absolutely count toward EGOT status. But when 44 individuals or entities win as producers, it makes us question how much creative involvement they each could have had.
Hudson is the third performer to EGOT whose only Tony was as one of a group of producers – though the previous groups were modestly-sized compared to A Strange Loop. Goldberg won in 2002 as one of 11 producers of Thoroughly Modern Millie, which was voted best musical. Legend won in 2017 as one of eight producers of August Wilson’s Jitney, which won as best revival of a play.
Maybe there needs to be a limit on the number of producers who can win awards on a given project. It’s hard to pick a number – should it be four, six, eight, 10? I think we can all agree that 44 is too many.
Here’s the thing: There are 25 living people who just need a Tony to become an EGOT. The list includes such top talents as Julie Andrews, Burt Bacharach, Cher, Common, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Randy Newman, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Martin Scorsese, Barbra Streisand, John Williams and Kate Winslet. Apparently, all they need to do is tell their agents they want to start investing in projects with awards potential. If they have good instincts and connections, one of those projects is bound to win.
This isn’t meant to undermine Hudson’s achievement. The current rules for who wins when a show wins a Tony or an Emmy (or when an album wins a Grammy for album of the year, for that matter) are too lax, but she didn’t write the rules. She absolutely has the talent to become an EGOT as a performer one day. Let’s hope she does.
You want to know how many of the 17 EGOT winners have won all four awards as performers? Just four – Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud and Audrey Hepburn.
A footnote: Hudson is the first person who rose to prominence on American Idol to EGOT. She was a contestant in season 3 of that long-running show. That’s one place she didn’t win. She came in sixth. She didn’t let that disappointment stop her.
Will Smith To Self-Produce ‘I Am Legend’ Sequel After Having Multiple Stalled Projects Due To Infamous Oscars Slap
Looks like Will Smith is prepping for his a huge box office comeback.
Inside sources state that the Oscar winning actor is servicing his own production company to develop a sequel to his 2007 hit I Am Legend. The move comes months after the 53-year-old TV and film star reportedly had other projects halted, due to him hitting comedian Chris Rock at this years Oscars.
According to reports, the insider stated:
“The concept is still to be signed off by Warner Brothers, but there has been no indication that Will is off the project Obviously he is the producer of the film and his production company is in charge while the development continues. And Will himself is undergoing therapy and taking time away from the limelight.”
Since assaulting Chris Rock over a Jada Pinkett Smith bald-head joke, Will Smith’s entertainment career has been questionable. After the Academy who hosts the awards show banned the Fresh Prince for 10 years due to his actions, a number of his upcoming projects were reportedly put on pause. Of these, includes two Netflix projects Bright 2 and Fast & Loose. Will’s reprising role as detective Mike Lowrey in the Bad Boys franchise is still on track, however.
While the Bel-Air producer has yet to speak publicly about the incident, aside from his social media apology to Chris, his wife recently addressed the matter. On her talk-show webseries Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith stated:
“My deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile.”
Reportedly, Chris is not interested in a reconciliation at the moment. In regards to the post-apocalyptic film’s sequel, reports state the story is being developed by the original script writers, who have included Will’s scientist character in the next film.
Will has not made any public comments about the sequel at this time.

Scream's Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy Support Neve Campbell's Decision Not to Return for 6th Film
Neve Campbell has come out to explain why she will not reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming sixth ‘Scream’ installment and now two of the actress’ costars took to social media this weekend to support her decision.
via Complex: As reported by People, Matthew Lillard joined a Twitter Spaces chat with Midnite Movie Club on Friday to sound off on Campbell’s decision not to return for Scream 6.
“Did Tom Cruise take less money for [Top Gun: Maverick]? Fuck no, dude. So, why is a woman supposed to take less? Why wouldn’t you pay her more as the series goes on?” Lillard said. “Was Scream 5 a hit or not a hit? It was a smash hit. Did they make a shit ton of money? Yes.”
Lillard continued, “Should Neve Campbell be paid for the work she’s done in five movies of a franchise? Yes, because she’s a female lead of one of the most successful horror franchises.”
Meanwhile, Jamie Kennedy, who starred alongside Campbell in the first two movies, hopped on his YouTube channel to express his support for his costar.
“Hollywood, this is a clear example of how twisted the system is,” Kennedy said.
“Sidney Prescott is the center of Scream. Neve Campbell is the face of Scream. Ghostface chasing her throughout the whole franchise … Neve is the final girl,” he added. “It’s crazy that the people behind the scenes are not paying the money to literally the face of the franchise. It’s people who weren’t involved from the get-go. This is everything that’s wrong with the business.”
Lillard and Kennedy’s comments arrive just a week after Campbell revealed that she wouldn’t be starring in the forthcoming sixth film.
“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film,” she told Deadline.
“As woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” Campbell continued. “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” she added. “To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

Squid Game season two is finally, officially announced for Netflix
Squid Game is officially coming back to Netflix for season two. According to a message from director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the second season will see the return of Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man. The note also states “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” and that we’ll also get introduced to Cheol-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” Hwang writes. “As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show... Join us once more for a whole new round.”
The renewal occurs despite the shift in Netflix’s fortunes since the show originally debuted. While Squid Game has been a massive worldwide hit, in April Netflix reported its first drop in subscribers in 10 years. That was quickly followed by layoffs and a reported tightening of production budgets practically across the board. Netflix is also focused on limiting password sharing, and has told employees it will launch ad-supported streaming by the end of this year.
The Korean series became Netflix’s biggest series ever at launch. Last year, Hwang said that he was in the “planning process” of developing season two, while Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said, “the Squid Game universe has just begun.” In other words, we all pretty much knew season two was coming, but now it’s official.
It’s unclear when exactly season two will make its debut — or if it’s even finished yet. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hwang told the outlet he could see the next season of Squid Game coming out by the end of 2023 or 2024, and will feature more diabolical games. So if you were hoping to see what sort of trouble Gi-hun gets wrapped up in next, you might have to wait a year or two.
31 Members Of White Supremacist Group Arrested And Charged With Planning Riot At Idaho Pride Event
Thirty-one members of the white supremacist group “Patriot Front” were arrested in Idaho’s downtown Coeur d’Alene on Saturday (June 11) for planning to riot at a Pride event, according to police.
“It is clear to us based on the gear that the individuals had with them, the stuff they had in their possession, the U-Haul with them along with paperwork that was seized from them, that they came to riot downtown,” Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White said during a news conference.
After receiving a tip from a concerned citizen, the police detained and charged the 31 individuals with conspiracy to riot, which is a misdemeanor charge in Idaho, White said. He added that the suspects traveled from at least 11 different states including Texas, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Illinois, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and Virginia. At least one of the members lived in Idaho.
The U-Haul truck they were detained in was only a few miles away from North Idaho Pride Alliance’s “Pride in the Park,” an annual event at Coeur d’Alene City Park.
“And they were all dressed like a small army,” said Bob Norris, the sheriff of Kootenai County. “We had units in their area, and we were able to intercept them pretty quickly.”
Many of the men had shields and wore shinguards. Along with the paperwork that appeared to show a master plan to riot both at the Pride event and along the main commercial strip of downtown Coeur d’Alene, the police recovered one smoke grenade in the truck, they said. They did not mention any other weapons.
The Anti-Defamation League, which tracks extremist organizations and hate crimes, describes “Patriot Front” as a Texas-based white supremacist group that formed when members of another white supremacist group, “Vanguard America,” broke off after the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The FBI is assisting local police in its investigation, according to FBI Public Affairs Specialist Sandra Yi Barker.

A fourth-grader has been hospitalized after nearly suffering a heart attack while visiting a memorial for her best friend who died during the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
The survivor Illiana Treviño,11 was protected by her best friend Amerie Jo Garzo,10 from bullies. “I think it’s just from a broken heart that we need to work on healing,” Illiana mom Jessica Treviño told People Magazine. “Everything just broke her in half, and she feels the fear of being bullied again.”
On May 31, the fourth-grader’s heart rate increased when she went to place flowers and a teddy bear at the memorial for Garza, one of 19 children and two teachers that were killed. Jessica became concerned and took her daughter to the hospital. She was told by doctors that her daughter had nearly gone into cardiac arrest. Jessica told People Magazine that Illiana had no other known medical conditions and was transferred to Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio.
“Her heart [rate] skyrocketed because she couldn’t take the trauma,” Jessica told People, adding her daughter could not handle the “pain” of what had happened.
Illiana’s family started a GoFundMe page to help with hospital fees. As of right now, the fundraiser has exceeded its $25,000 goal, reaching nearly $43,000. On the GoFundMe page, the family wrote that the medication Illiana has been given by doctors is not working. “The Doctors biggest worry is that she might go into cardiac arrest. We are barely seeing the ripples side effects of what this tragic incident has brought to this community,” the family wrote.
Illiana has been moved out of the ICU, although Jessica said doctors now believe her daughter shows signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and acute stress from the trauma she suffered.
According to People Magazine, Illiana escaped the May 24 school shooting unharmed after the gunman walked past her classroom. Her best friend Garza was shot when she tried to dial 911 on her cellphone. “She is still dealing with some hard issues,” Jessica told People. “And it’s a long road to recovery.”

Coming in second place was Top Gun: Maverick, which earned an additional $50 million this weekend. Worldwide, the Tom Cruise film has now made $747,044,000.

Whew! Social media has had a lot to say leading up to the celebrity boxing match between Blac Chyna and Alysia Magen, an Air Force veteran and fitness model. During the fight, each of the contestants had a some good throws, but ultimately the results ended in a draw and Twitter’s reacting!

Toby Keith reveals he was diagnosed with stomach cancer last fall
Toby Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer last fall, the country music star revealed in an Instagram post on Sunday.
According to the post — the first public acknowledgment of his health battle, the 60-year-old musician has been privately undergoing treatment.
"I've spent the last six months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery," Keith wrote. "So far, so good."
The "Should've Been a Cowboy" singer — known for his politically charged lyrics and patriotic stance — added that he needs "time to breathe, recover and relax."
While Keith didn't share more about his prognosis, his message ended on something of an upbeat note.
"I am looking forward to spending this time with my family," the Oklahoma native, who shares three children with wife Tricia, wrote. "But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can't wait."
Keith's announcement was met with messages of support as fans offered up prayers for his recovery.
Meanwhile, local CBS affiliate WBNS reports that Keith's scheduled July 28 performance at the Ohio State Fair has been canceled, per a tweet from organizers.
Katy Tur shares her reaction to her father coming out as transgender
Katy Tur is opening up about her tumultuous childhood, and her reaction to her father coming out as transgender.
The NBC News correspondent, who is the daughter of legendary Los Angeles broadcasters Zoey (formerly Bob) Tur and Marika Gerrard, sat down with CBS Sunday Morning to share her experience.
Growing up, the broadcaster believed her parents, who were known for reporting the news from their helicopter, were "the coolest people in the world." Tur shared that she even "knew how to fly a helicopter" as a kid.
"It was a really unique and interesting childhood that nobody else had," said Tur, 38, who chronicles her experience in her new memoir, Rough Draft.
However, she also witnessed her parents' struggles up close. In 2013, Tur received a phone call from her father during which he told her that he was transgender.
"My dad said, 'I am a woman.' And I said, 'what?' And my dad said, 'I am a woman. I am transitioning,'" Tur recalled. "I'm going to become a woman."
Tur said she was at first "puzzled" by the announcement, replying, "You've got to be joking. Are you kidding? What are you talking about?"
"My dad was adamant," she continued. "'I'm the wrong person. I'm going to become the right person. Don't you see this is why I've been so angry?' ... It was a lot."
Tur, who is married to CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil, said her father would experience "fits of anger" when she was younger, and would become "abusive." She added that they did not get the police involved because to do so would hurt her father's career and ability to provide for the family.
"Something would set him off, and he would get so, so out of control that he would throw his fist through a wall," recalled Tur, who sat with her mother during the interview. "And it happened often. I mean, we would go to the store, buy plaster, plaster [the walls] up. The violence was always there. It felt like it was normal, like that was just how a relationship worked. It got angry, it got violent. You yelled and you screamed, and then everything was fine."
In response to Katy's claims, Zoey Tur acknowledged the outbursts in a separate interview with CBS Sunday Morning's Tracy Smith, during which she said she "failed" her daughter.
"Throwing batteries? Probably, yeah. Punching walls? There were a couple. I was in the news business and I — we — were under … extraordinary pressure," Zoey said. "I could be very intimidating, for sure. And, you know, and if the kids felt I was intimidating, I apologize. I did the best I could."
Katy and Zoey are estranged, and have not seen each other in 10 years. However, Zoey told Smith that she is comfortable with Katy sharing these stories.
"If it takes an act of public humiliation, in front of a camera, to make Katy feel better, and feel vindicated, so be it," Zoey shared. "I'm happy to do that. I love her that much."
Tur's memoir doesn't only address with her family situation, however. She repeatedly went toe to toe with Donald Trump during the former president's 2016 campaign, and was subsequently targeted by the then-presidential hopeful.
The journalist also encountered rampant sexism early on in her career. An excerpt published by Vanity Fair chronicled how at one of her first jobs she was told that her “boobs looked too big” for TV, and that she needed to adjust her style, as Yahoo Life previously reported.
Stevie Wonder Speaks Out Against Ongoing ‘Assault’ on Civil Liberties: ‘America is At A Time of Crisis’
Stevie Wonder is sounding the alarm about deteriorating civil rights in America. The Grammy winner gave an impassioned speech in defense of civil rights recently while being honored with the Icon Award during the NAACP Legal Defense Fund‘s 34th National Equal Justice Awards Dinner.
“A woman’s right to control her body, the right to vote and our precious civil liberties are under assault,” Wonder said to the audience. “Did you know that? Do you all know that? Without question. America is at a time of crisis, please hear me loud and clear. We must continue to stand together.”
Wonder, who was presented his award by actress Rita Moreno, went on to say, “Let me be clear, America is right, stands strong as a world leader as a fighter for democracy around the world, but it must not forget to fight the war in poverty here in the United States of America. It must provide healthcare and education for our children and grandchildren, as well it must liberate itself from the hate speech and practices that are destroying the promise of America and that is equal rights and justice for all.
He added: “Let me end with the words of Justice Marshall, ‘When you see something wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out because this is your country, this is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.’ It will be all good.”
Wonder was later joined on stage by John Legend. The two performed a duet of Legend’s hit “Ordinary People,” as New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center erupted into cheers.
Other honorees included journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, and LDF’s former president Sherrilyn Ifill.

On Sunday afternoon, Mayweather was amongst a three-class group of stars inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Before he began his acceptance speech, Mayweather could not hold back the tears.
“I don’t really know what to say,” he said. “I told myself I wouldn’t cry, but this is something beautiful. This is one of the best days of my life.”
Mayweather currently has a perfect record of 50-0 with 27 knockouts. His bank account isn’t looking too bad either. It has been reported that Mayweather’s earnings are more than $800 million, making him the wealthiest boxer ever.
The lightweight champ credited his father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as being responsible for his success. He also acknowledged his father for introducing him to the sport.
“I love my dad because, without him, this wouldn’t be possible,” Mayweather said. “He’s the best trainer ever. There will never be another trainer that’s better than my dad.”
While mentioning his dad, Mayweather says he was grateful for the wise advice his father gave him early in his career: Don’t take unnecessary punishment.
“I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to take less punishment,’” the younger Mayweather said. “I want to retire on my own terms. I want to make smart investments, so I’m able to live a comfortable life once my career is over.”

Meta Sued By Family Who Blames Instagram for their Daughter’s Eating Disorder
Meta is being sued by a family who blames the social media platform Instagram for their daughter’s eating disorder, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide.
The preteen’s family says she became addicted to the popular social media platform, so much so that it resulted in self-harm.
The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California late Monday, cites the Facebook Papers, which is a trove of internal Meta research documents that were leaked last fall and revealed that the tech giant knew Instagram was damaging body image and other mental-health issues specifically in teenage girls.
The case was filed on behalf of Alexis Spence, who created her first Instagram account at the age of 11, notably without her parents’ knowledge and in violation of the platform’s minimum age requirement of 13. The complaint claims Instagram’s artificial intelligence engine almost immediately steered Spence who was in the fifth grade at the time into a repetitive chamber of content they allege glorifies anorexia and self-cutting, while also systematically supporting her addiction to using the app.
The Social Media Victims Law Center, which is a Seattle-based group that advocates for families of teens harmed online filed the lawsuit.
Spence who is now 19, was once “confident and happy” but has since been hospitalized for depression, anxiety, and anorexia and “fights to stay in recovery every day.” The suit claims her conditions are a result of “the harmful content and features Instagram relentlessly promoted and provided to her in its effort to increase engagement.”
It is an unprecedented lawsuit of its kind to draw from the Facebook Papers while also exposing the real human harm behind its findings, Spence’s attorneys say.
The suit also encloses previously unpublicized documents from the leaks, which includes one in which Meta identified “tweens” as “herd animals” who “want to find communities where they can fit in.” The attorneys argue that the details in the documents demonstrate Meta’s efforts to recruit minor users to its platforms.
“If you look at the extensive research that it [Meta] performed, they knew exactly what they were doing to kids, and they kept doing it,” said the founder of the Social Media Victims Law Center, Matthew P. Bergman, who represents Spence and her family. “I wish I could say that Alexis’ case is aberrational. It’s not. The only aberration is that she survived.”
Bergman is also representing Tammy Rodriguez, an Enfield, Connecticut, woman who also filed a lawsuit earlier this year against Meta and Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, for the companies’ alleged roles in her 11-year-old daughter’s suicide last summer.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a statement on Oct. 5, 2021, following the early release of the Facebook Papers, saying, “I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the kinds of experiences I want my kids and others to have online, and it’s very important to me that everything we build is safe and good for kids.”
He also specifically mentioned to a reporting that showed teenagers suffered more from “anxiety, sadness and eating issues” and noted that “more teenage girls who said they struggled with that issue also said Instagram made those difficult times better rather than worse.”

Rapper Roddy Ricch missed his performance at the Governors Ball Music Festival in NYC yesterday after he was arrested on multiple gun charges on his way there.
According to TMZ, “The Box” rapper (real name Roderick Wayne Moore, Jr.) and his entourage were stopped at a security checkpoint for the festival in Queens. After being searched, officers reportedly found a loaded gun inside the vehicle Roddy was taking to the show with two other people. Nine rounds of ammunition and a large capacity magazine were also found.
Cops hit the 23-year-old rapper with 4 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a large capacity ammo feeding device and unlawful possession of that device. The two other people riding in the vehicle were arrested as well. Their charges are unknown at this time.
The Governors Ball Music Festival’s official Twitter account broke the news to fans that Roddy Ricch would NOT be hitting the stage. No explanation was given.
”Unfortunately Roddy Ricch is no longer performing today,” the festival tweeted.
No word on if he'll receive a bond.
The Governors Ball has been struggling to keep scheduled artists for the festival. First, the Migos pulled out and Lil Wayne signed on to fill in. Then, Wayne canceled and he was replaced with A$AP Ferg.
