Dua Lipa for Vogue UK - February 2021!

The coming season in fashion will always be remembered as a time of profound change for the industry, starting with its fashion month, last September. Gone were the dozen seated shows a day, the schedule of international travel and the throngs of people. Instead, there was the unexpected peace of our sofas at home, as leading designers put on video presentations of models walking in empty spaces that beamed on to our laptops, while others sent elaborate recreations of their work on paper in beautiful boxes (Loewe), or made mood-heavy street-shot documentary films (Marni). I was even made into a doll (thank you, Moschino).

To pull out the message of the season from so many different creative propositions felt new and exciting. No longer simply models parading up and down, it came with a whole new set of codes to dissect. And so, on page 110 of the February 2021 issue, you will find our first spring/summer 2021 story, the magazine’s traditional opening to the new season’s coverage. Vogue’s Kate Phelan joined rising-star young photographer Rafael Pavarotti and a cast of models, from Adut Akech to Shanelle Nyasiase, to capture the mood of now. For many designers, this time has been about cutting away excess and zeroing in on the core of what they do. It has made for focused, thoughtful collections high on wearability and featuring the sort of pieces that will see you through not only the weeks and months ahead, but the years.

The intoxicating notion of the approaching spring promises an artistic reawakening, too, and so we have turned our attention to some of the extraordinary women shaping the cultural conversation. Tilda Swinton is photographed at home in the Scottish Highlands by Nikolai von Bismarck, wearing pieces from Chanel’s spring/summer collection. Tilda is a true one-off, an artist through and through, who famously carries off fashion brilliantly. Why? Because she treats it with the same respect and integrity she does every passion in her life. In conversation with playwright Jeremy O Harris, on page 128, she offers a rare insight into her world.

#GEORGIABLUE: REV. RAPHAEL WARNOCK has one won a US Senate seat! He has become the First African American Senator in Georgia!

Democrats moved a major step closer to capturing control of the Senate on Wednesday morning as Georgia voters elected the Rev. Raphael Warnock, the pastor at the storied Ebenezer Baptist Church, in a hard-fought runoff contest that became roiled by President Trump’s false claims of voter fraud in the state.

Mr. Warnock’s victory over the Republican incumbent, Kelly Loeffler, was called by Associated Press early Wednesday. It represented a landmark breakthrough for African-Americans in politics as well as for Georgia: He became the first Black Democrat elected to the Senate from the South.

For Democrats to take the Senate, which is crucial to enacting President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s first-term agenda, they also need to win Georgia’s other Senate runoff held on Tuesday. With an estimated 98 percent of votes counted in that race as of 3:30 a.m.  Wednesday, the Republican candidate, David Perdue, trailed his Democratic rival, Jon Ossoff, by 12,806 votes.

Turnout in rural, overwhelmingly white counties where Republicans needed a strong showing was lagging without Mr. Trump on the ballot, and many of Georgia’s heavily Black localities saw turnout levels that neared those of the presidential race in November.

While Mr. Warnock’s win was a major gain for his party — he is the first Democrat to be elected to the Senate from Georgia since 2000 — both political parties remained on edge over the unresolved Ossoff-Perdue race and its implications for the next two years in American politics. Whichever party wins that race will control the Senate, with Republicans counting on Mr. Perdue to prevail and give them the ability to constrain Mr. Biden’s policy ambitions.

Ms. Loeffler had rebranded herself as a hard-line Trump loyalist to fend off a challenge from the right in the first round of voting. In recent weeks, she continued to embrace the president, even using an election-eve rally with Mr. Trump in northwest Georgia to proudly declare that she would oppose certifying his loss to Mr. Biden when Congress meets on Wednesday.

Mr. Warnock and Mr. Ossoff ran as a virtual package deal, as did the two Republicans, often appearing at events together and crafting similar messages about the stark consequences for the nation if the other side won. Republicans used much of the runoff to focus on Mr. Warnock’s sermons, a line of attack that appeared to mobilize African-American voters, especially in more conservative rural Georgia where the church is a pillar of many communities.

Mr. Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his defeat also robbed Ms. Loeffler of what might have been her best argument in what is still a slightly right-leaning state — that she would be a check on the liberal excesses in a government fully controlled by Democrats.

Even before polls closed on Tuesday, senior Republican campaign officials were pinning the blame on the president, noting that their polling testified to the power of the “check-and-balance” argument the party was unable to make because of Mr. Trump’s denial.

The Rev. Raphael Warnock promised Georgia voters early Wednesday that he would work on their behalf in the Senate, even before the race had been officially called in his favor.

“We were told that we couldn’t win this election,” said Mr. Warnock, who at the time was leading the Republican incumbent, Kelly Loeffler, by roughly 35,000 votes with about 97 percent of the ballots already counted. “But tonight, we proved that with hope, hard work and the people by our side, anything is possible.”

Mr. Warnock, the pastor at the storied Ebenezer Baptist Church, declared that he “was going to the Senate” to work for all Georgians, though the race has not been decided.

During brief remarks, he  recalled his family’s roots in Georgia, noting that he had grown up in Savannah’s housing projects and graduated from Morehouse College. He spoke of his parents, including his mother, who he said “used to pick somebody else’s cotton” as a teenager.

“But the other day, because this is America, the 82-year-old hands that used to pick somebody else’s cotton went to the polls and picked her youngest son to be a United States Senator,” he said.

If he ultimately wins his race, Mr. Warnock would become the first Black Democrat elected to the Senate from the South.

“May my story be an inspiration to some young person who is trying to grasp and grab hold of the American dream.”

“Georgia,” he added, “I am honored by the faith that you have shown in me.”

Speaking around the same time, Ms. Loeffler thanked her supporters and said: “We’re going to win this election.” Still, she acknowledged that the contest was “a game of inches” and that there was still “work to do.”

Mr. Warnock’s race is occurring alongside another tight Senate contest that has yet to be called. That race, between Republican David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff, as of early Wednesday was a virtual tie.

In a statement early Wednesday, Mr. Ossoff’s campaign manager, Ellen Foster, said that “when all the votes are counted we fully expect that Jon Ossoff will have won this election.”

If Democrats manage to win both races, they will take control of the Senate, clearing the way to more easily enact President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s agenda.

BREAKING! Dr. Dre Suffers Brain Aneurysm Hospitalized At Cedar Sinai In Los Angeles!

Dr. Dre is at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering a brain aneurysm ... TMZ has learned.

Sources connected to Dre and with direct knowledge tell us, Dre suffered the aneurysm Monday and was rushed by ambulance to Cedars and was taken directly to ICU, where he remains Tuesday.

Our sources say the 55-year-old music mogul is stable and lucid, but doctors don't know what caused the bleeding and they are doing a battery of tests.

As you know, Dre is in the middle of a very contentious divorce with his estranged wife      Nicole. As we reported, Nicole wants $2 million a month in temporary spousal support and $5 million for attorney fees, but Dre says he's been paying all of her expenses so the $2 mil demand was outlandish. He also says the attorney's fees are outrageous since her lawyers have only been working on the case for a few months.

We send our thoughts and prayers to his Family and Friends!

#KIMYE: Uh Oh? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Reportedly Getting a Divorce!

Page Six reports that "divorce is imminent" for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, according to sources close to the celebrity couple. Kim reportedly hired celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser to represent her in the proceedings.

"They are keeping it low-key but they are done," a source told Page Six. "Kim has hired Laura Wasser and they are in settlement talks."

Sources claim Kim and Kanye spent time apart over the holiday as they sorted out their separation.

"Kim got Kanye to go up there [Wyoming] so they could live separate lives and quietly get things sorted out to separate and divorce," the source said. "She’s done."

The couple married back in 2014, following her divorce from Kris Humphries, and have four children together: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.

"She is serious about taking the bar exam and becoming a lawyer, she is serious about her prison reform campaign," the source told Page Six. "Meanwhile Kanye is talking about running for president and saying other crazy shit, and she's just had enough of it."

This follows prior reports that the couple has been living separate lives. One source told Page Six that Kanye is "completely over the entire family" and "wants nothing to do with them."

Back in July, the 43-year-old rapper tweeted about their potential split. "I been trying to get divorced since Kim met with Meek at the Warldolf [sic] for 'prison reform,'" he wrote at the time. He also called out his mother-in-law, momager Kris Jenner. He later issued a public apology.

Kim's 40th birthday was also reportedly contentious for the shaky couple.

"He showed up late and left early, he wouldn't appear in any of their Instagram shots. All he did was bring over the hologram of her father Robert Kardashian, then got out of there as fast as he could," a source told Page Six.

Outlets reported back in September that Kim planned to divorce her husband of six years, citing Ye's mental health and public outbursts as one of the major factors. West revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016.

Kim hired attorney Laura Wasser for her last divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries. Wasser has represented celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, and Johnny Depp, and often negotiates confidential settlement agreements before the parties file their divorce in court.

One source told Page Six that the couple's biggest battle during the divorce may be over their infamously minimalist Calabasas home. Kim reportedly owns the land under and around the house, but Kanye owns the building.

"Kim is trying to get Kanye to turn over the Calabasas house to her, because that’s where the kids are based and growing up. That is their home," the source said.

We’ve reached out to a Kanye West rep for comment. This post will be updated.

#RHOA: Here’s An Update on Drew Sidora and Her Husband!

Atlanta rookie Drew Sidora is giving fans an inside look at her marriage to Ralph Pittman during Season 13 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Viewers are getting a peek at the relationship between the newest Atlanta Peach and her husband, including highly emotional moments like the conversation earlier this season during which Drew tried to figure out where Ralph went without telling her.

Drew addressed that moment on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on January 3. "That was a first. He had never left town for multiple days," she said. While she said there was a previous time he went to the airport to catch a flight before changing his mind ("he came to his senses and came home"), she noted he had never actually followed through on it before the time they discussed this season.

Kandi Burruss recently shared her thoughts on their relationship during a separate appearance on WWHL late last month, including his trip to Tampa and him watching Drew on the security camera. "Oh no, that would have never flew at the Tucker house. Just know that," she said, adding if she thinks counseling might be a good option for them.

Kandi also expressed her opinion about Ralph on Twitter this past Sunday, writing, "Yes. He’s really nice in person. I don’t see the side that we’re seeing on the show because that’s their personal stuff that happens when we aren’t around."

The January 3 episode of RHOA included Drew and Ralph attending a counseling session with Ralph telling the counselor that what he wants most is "respect and sex" in their relationship. Drew offered some insight into how counseling is affecting their relationship now.

She said on WWHL, "We're on that journey. Just doing the work. And, as you saw, he opened up a little about his past, so there is some trauma as I learned from Coach Love. And he's working on himself and he is committed to the marriage."

She also found out something else in counseling with her husband — and it has something to do with those security cameras: "We bought our home together. It's security cameras everywhere. He is in IT and he is now, as he shared to me recently in counseling, he wanted to make sure we were safe and that was the reason why he was watching us on the camera."

And this just in, Drew shared a big update on WWHL on where the couple stands today: "But I want to say this as we start off 2021, Andy, he actually surprised us and he took me and the family and we are at the beach right now. So I'm not even in Atlanta. i just wanted to let you know things are happening."

She shared a similar sentiment on Instagram in recent weeks when sharing photos from a family holiday photo shoot: "Looking ahead toward growth, forgiveness and love."

#HipHopNews: Dababy Claims He And Lil Wayne Are The Best Rappers Alive!

DaBaby has offered his proclamation for who he thinks are the best rappers alive.

On Sunday (Jan. 3), just days after we rang in the new year and bid farewell to a tumultuous 2020, DaBaby spent some time in South Beach, Miami with a rap veteran. Sharing an image of himself and Lil Wayne at the studio via Instagram, Baby captioned the carousel of photos, "Best rappers alive.🌪@liltunechi 🐐."

It's evident that the North Carolina rapper is certain about his stance regarding his own rapping ability. Last October, DaBaby declared that he has one of the top five flows in the rap game. So now, he's added Weezy to the conversation and a few people in the comments section of his IG post have a difference of opinions.

Aside from the Blame It on Baby rhymer hanging with Wayne this past weekend, he was also spotted rubbing elbows with Diddy.

Nonetheless, not only does DaBaby feel he's one of the best rappers alive, he's also a boss and in charge of his own record label, Billion Dollar Baby Entertainment. The former 2019 XXL Freshman, who appears on the cover of XXL's Winter 2020 issue, recently explained the qualities he thinks makes a boss.

First, Baby emphasized leading by example. He also honed in on the importance of understanding his artists needs and challenging them to enable themselves to maximize their potential.

And lastly, DaBaby stressed the significance of diligence and work ethic—both of which are qualities rap greats should possess.

Considering DaBaby's hit-making track record from last year, which includes his collab on Jack Harlow's "Whats Poppin (Remix)" that features Weezy F. Baby as well, fans can assume that this forthcoming collab with Lil Wayne will be no different.

Grammys 2021 Ceremony Postponed Over COVID-19 Concerns!

The 2021 Grammys have been postponed from their scheduled date on Jan. 31 over concerns due to COVID-19, according to a report in Rolling Stone.

No new date has been set for the ceremony, but Rolling Stone reports that the Recording Academy is targeting a date sometime in March. Representatives for the Grammys did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

The 2021 ceremony, which will be hosted by “The Daily Show’s” Trevor Noah, was intended to be held without an audience and only allowing presenters and performers on site during the show. The Grammys are traditionally held at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles and typically draw 18,000 attendees. This year, the show was planned to be held in the downtown area but in a greatly limited capacity.

Beyoncé leads the field of 2021 Grammy nominees with nine total nods, followed by Dua Lipa, Roddy Ricch and Taylor Swift. The nominees for Album of the Year are Jhené Aiko’s “Chilombo,” the self-titled album from Black Pumas, Coldplay’s “Everyday Life,” Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 3,” Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III,” Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia,” Post Malone’s “Hollywood Bleeding” and Swift’s “Folklore.”

The Recording Academy’s postponement comes as Los Angeles is heading toward its worst month on record for the coronavirus pandemic. Yesterday, L.A. County reported over 9,000 new cases, 77 deaths and 7,697 current hospitalizations as ICU bed capacity in Southern California remains at 0%.

Voting for this year’s Grammys closed on Monday.

#RIP Extraordinaire Black Author Eric Jerome Dickey Has Died At 59!

We are saddened to report on the January 3 death of New York Times bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey. The news was confirmed by his publicist. He was 59 years old.

“I am heart broken. My cousin, Eric Jerome Dickey passed away on yesterday,” wrote La Verne Madison Fuller on social media. “Guys, when God tells you to do something, just do it. Just a few weeks ago, God woke me up to text him and say that I loved him. He let me know that he loved us too.”

Dickey was the man behind several classic books about the more tender realities of Black life, including “Sister, Sister,” “Friends & Lovers” and “Between Lovers.” In 2020, “Sister, Sister” was honored by Essence as one of the 50 most impactful books of the past 50 years.

Over 7 million of his books have been published worldwide.

Dickey was a native of Memphis, Tennessee and attended Memphis State University. He began writing stories in 1989, 7 years before his debut novel was published. At the time, he was still working as an engineer, following through on his college major.

After leaving the engineering field to work as a comedian and actor, Dickey moved to Los Angeles. He wrote his own comedic material, deepening his connection to writing.

It was through his work that many Black people were able to feel seen and an outpouring of love has began on social media since the news broke of his death.

In a 2019 interview, Dickey spoke on the purpose behind his stories. “I don’t intentionally write a book with an idea of ‘the moral to this story is,’ because I’m more focused on letting the people in the book live,” he said. “I just try to do my best. I never know if I’ve hit the nail on the head, if it’s really worked, until I put it out there for people to read.”

We are sending love to Dickey’s family and all those that knew him.

Rapper Sues Nicki Minaj for $200 Million Over "Rich Sex"!

Nicki Minaj is being sued over her song “Rich Sex,” which appeared on her 2018 album Queen.

According to TMZ, rapper Jawara Headley is suing the fellow Queens native for more than $200 million over the track. Headley, who goes by Brinx Billions, claims he should be credited as the sole author/creator/composer/writer/producer of “Rich Sex.”

As TMZ points out, Headley is currently credited as a writer on the song according to the ASCAP database. In his legal filings, he alleges he first showed Onika “Rich Sex” prior to 2016, when she told him “it would be extremely marketable and become a global hit.” He claims the two met via MySpace back in 2007.

In the lawsuit, Headley points to specific lyrics, including “it ain’t such a thing as broke and handsome,” as evidence of Nicki’s theft. He also says the song has a similar beat and arrangement.

Lil Wayne hopped on the track for Queen. In addition to Nicki, Brinx Billions is also suing Universal Music Group, Young Money, and Cash Money for more than $200 million in damages.

Over the weekend, Mrs. Petty and her husband gifted the world with the first image of their adorable son on Instagram.

"#PapaBear thank you so very much for choosing me to be your mama 🎀🦄🙏 Wishing you guys a happy & prosperous New Year," Minaj wrote. "Thank you for your love & support throughout this journey. It’s meant so much to me."

Tanya Roberts, Bond Girl And 'Sheena' Star, Dead At 65!

Tanya Roberts, who captivated James Bond in “A View to a Kill” and appeared in the sitcom “That ’70s Show,” has died, several hours after she was mistakenly declared dead by her publicist and her partner. She was 65.

Lance O’Brien, her companion of nearly two decades, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center reached out to him on Monday at 9:30 p.m. PST to inform him that Roberts had passed away.

“She was my soulmate, she was my best friend. We haven’t been apart for two days” in their years together, a tearful O’Brien said.

Roberts' death was related to a urinary tract infection, publicist Mike Pingel said. He had been at the hospital Tuesday morning with O'Brien to pick up Roberts' personal effects.

Roberts collapsed at home on Dec. 24 after walking her dogs and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai. She had been reported dead on Sunday, but Pingel said that was based on a mistake by O'Brien, who believed Roberts had slipped away during what was expected to be a final visit.

Numerous outlets, including The Associated Press, reported Roberts’ death Monday, based on information Pingel received from O’Brien.

O’Brien, who’d been unable to see Roberts in the hospital because of COVID-19 restrictions, was allowed to visit Sunday as her condition worsened. The actor did not have the virus, he said.

When he got the call Sunday that she was failing, O'Brien said he was “emotionally shocked because I was expecting her to come home."

Roberts played geologist Stacey Sutton opposite Roger Moore in 1985′s “A View to a Kill,” where she held a gun on Bond after tricking him into thinking she was in a shower. The character later joined him to stop bad guys on an airship over San Francisco.

Roberts also appeared in such fantasy adventure films as “The Beastmaster” and “Hearts and Armour.” She replaced Shelley Hack in “Charlie’s Angels,” joining Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd as third Angel Julie. She also played comic book heroine Sheena — a female version of the Tarzan story — in a 1984 film.

A new generation of fans saw her on “That ’70s Show” from 1998 and 2004, playing Midge, mother to Laura Prepon’s character Donna.

Roberts, a huge animal rights activist, is survived by O’Brien.

Tyrese Denies Locking Wife And Daughter Out, Wants 20k Child Support Lowered!

Tyrese Gibson is denying claims that he locked out his estranged wife, Samantha Lee Gibson, and their 2-year-old daughter, Soraya, out of the family’s Georgia home.

Gibson and Samantha Lee jointly announced on last week that they are amicably divorcing after over three years of marriage, but according to TMZ, the couple had split three months prior:

Samantha Lee Gibson filed divorce docs back in September, and in the petition she alleges Tyrese had, just a few weeks earlier, cut her off financially, and locked her and their 2-year-old daughter, Soraya, out of the family’s Georgia home.

Tyrese is calling BS, though … in docs he filed, he denies leaving them out in the cold. On the other hand, he admits having major issues with Samantha’s demand for $20,000

In their joint statement, the estranged couple, who he met in 2015, said that they would ‘remain the best of friends and strong co-parents.’

Welcome Back! Mase Is The Pastor Of Atlanta’s Gathering Oasis Church!

Harlem rapper Mase is now the pastor of Atlanta’s Gathering Oasis Church.

Mase revealed the news on Instagram and said thank you. He wasted no time trying to connect people with the Lord and said “all people are welcomed” at the Church of God. Take a look:

“THANK YOU. Also tag someone who is expecting something great from God and let them know that God has already started answering prayers in 2021. Tag someone looking a new church family and remember “ALL PEOPLE ARE WELCOMED” at @thegochurch.”

The Church of God also shared the news and told people on their social media to welcome their new leader, Pastor Mason Betha. Some online users had mixed feelings about it, due to Mase’s career, while others defended the “Lookin’ At Me” rapper.

Back in 1999, Mase retired from hip hop to focus more on God. He found a new calling and became an ordained minister. Five years later, he returned to the music scene and dropped his third studio album Welcome Back. Around this time, Mase was hanging with 50 Cent and his G Unit squad. There was chatter of Mase signing to G Unit but that never happened. However, he did collab on a song, “300 Shots” with Fif, Young Buck, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Tony Yayo, and Lloyd Banks.

Since then, Mase has been juggling being a Reverend and a rapper. In 2017 he dropped a diss track about Cam’Ron “The Oracle.” At the time, he appeared as a guest on Ebro In The Morning to discuss it.

During a YouTube interview, Mase said his focus is to help bring the community closer to God. Mase said,

“I really see this generation being turned back to God’s hands. I think there’s been a major challenge with the city like being able to direct people back to God and I really welcome the challenge.”

#NewCoupleAlert: Olivia Wilde And Harry Styles Are Dating, Seen Holding Hands!

It looks like Olivia Wilde has moved on from Jason Sudeikis — with Harry Styles.

Wilde, 36, and Styles, 26, took their romance public when they were spotted holding hands at his agent’s wedding at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, Calif., this weekend.

In the images, the “Adore You” crooner holds onto Wilde, who split from fiancé Sudeikis at the beginning of last year, with one hand and carries a tumbler full of alcohol in the other.

In more snapshots, Styles — who just released the music video for his song “Treat People With Kindness” — wears a white robe while chatting with the bride, Glenne Christiaansen, and groom, Jeffrey Azoff.

Azoff and Christiaansen drove to their wedding venue in Styles’ vintage convertible. Soon after the couple arrived, guests made their way to the valet to be bused over to the ranch.

The former “House” actress and Styles may have fallen for each other on the set of her upcoming psychological thriller, “Don’t Worry Darling.”

Wilde told Vogue she decided to cast Styles after seeing him in “Dunkirk” and “did a little victory dance” when Styles officially joined the film, which also stars Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan.

It appears to be the first relationship Wilde has taken public since she and Sudeikis ended their engagement.

“The O.C.” alum and Sudeikis, 45, are the parents of two children: son Otis and daughter Daisy. Though they’re no longer engaged, the former couple seems to have had the best breakup in Hollywood, often getting photographed hugging each other and smiling during exchanges with their kids.

Styles was last linked to model Camille Rowe, though they broke up in 2018.

Broncos Von Miller’s Ex-Fiancée Releases Disturbing Text Messages He Allegedly Sent Her While She Was Pregnant!

Broncos LB Von Miller is apparently beefing with his ex-fiancee Megan Denise and things are getting ugly.

For the past year, Miller and Denise have had a volatile relationship and have broken up and reconciled several times.

Via Sports Gossip: Von Miller celebrated his 31st birthday on Thursday with his former stripper fiancee MeGan Denise. The Broncos star linebacker was rumored to have split from Denise last month after they both scrubbed their Instagram accounts.

That rumor was either false or they have since reconciled because Denise shared a video of her gift for Miller and the two of them sharing a birthday kiss.

On Monday night, Denise released several disturbing text messages from Miller on her Instagram page where he allegedly told her he prayed for her miscarriage while she was pregnant.

Miller denied the allegations and claims Denise is angry over their breakup

Historic DC Church Sues Far-Right Extremist Group Proud Boys For Vandalizing Church Property!

According to Monday’s filing, The Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church brought the suit against the Proud Boys, its leader, Enrique Tarrio, and eight more unnamed defendants for allegedly “engaging in acts of terror and vandalizing church property in an effort to intimidate the Church and silence its support for racial justice.”

Videos showing the December 12 incident at the church and others showing the destruction of Black Lives Matter flags were widely shared online in December. According to the Washington Post, four churches were vandalized during the rally.

A Spokesperson for the DC Metropolitan Police Department confirmed in a statement that Tarrio was arrested in DC on Monday night on the destruction of property charges related to the incident. He was also hit with a possession charge after police found he was carrying two high capacity firearm magazines.

He had previously claimed responsibility for burning a Black Lives Matter banner from the Asbury United Methodist Church. “Against the wishes of my attorney, I am here today to admit that I am the person responsible for the burning of this sign,” he wrote in a Parler post. “And I am not ashamed of what I did because I didn’t do it out of hate…I did it out of love.”

In a tweet, the president and executive director of Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Kristen Clarke, called the incident “a new chapter in a long and despicable history of mob violence targeting Black houses of worship.” Clarke continued, “Our suit seeks to hold accountable those responsible for vandalizing and terrorizing a historic Black church because of its support for racial justice.”

The complaint that was filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on Monday alleges that the members of the Proud Boys, which was deemed a hate group by Southern Poverty Law Center, “traveled to Washington D.C. for the purpose of committing further acts of violence.”

The Proud Boys are preparing to return to Washington on Wednesday when Congress is scheduled to finalize the results of the presidential election. The Proud Boys, a far-right movement, is allied with Donald Trump, and several members of the party do not believe in the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

Tarrio, who appeared to have been arrested on his way to DC for the demonstration, told Parler that the group’s armed members would not wear their usual black-and-yellow uniform but would wear all the black clothes to be “incognito” in an attempt to fit in with Antifa counter-protesters.

The Proud Boys was established in 2016 as a “Western chauvinists” fraternity, which became increasingly noticeable during the 2020 elections. Although the party claims to disavow white supremacy, its founders included many white supremacists.

The group is also increasingly pro-Trump, as the president seems to have shown their support. During the September presidential debate, when he was asked to condemn white-supremacist groups like the Proud Boys, Trump ordered them to “stand back and stand by.”
