Awkwafina for Harper’s Bazaar US - February 2021!

Awkwafina is introducing me to the wide world of slime. It’s similar to the art of taking an edible: The key is restraint. “At first it’s not going to immediately solidify,” she says as she instructs me to pour Elmer’s slime activator into a bowl of glue. “So you’re going to be, ‘I need more!’ Like edibles. And then what happens is, it turns into this really gross-feeling piece of shit.” We both pop some edibles and start stirring.

She’s been into slime for a few years now. She even has what she calls her Slime Center—a variety of plastic bags filled with beads, foam balls of varying sizes, molding clay—that she brought with her when she moved to Los Angeles from New York a couple of years ago. On one November day over Zoom, she’s decided to go all out experimenting with glow-in-the-dark glue that she’ll eventually add white foam balls and glitter to. I show her my bowl of white gloop. “You gotta get some color up in there,” she observes.

“If you have any kind of shaving cream, this changes the game,” she continues. “It’ll give it a nice smell and a nice consistency, make it all a bit smoother to handle.” As I fold the shaving cream into the bowl, the slime eventually swallows it up, becoming softer and slightly puffy. The magic of slime is that you can put anything in it—essential oils, lotion, lube—and it incorporates into itself. You can choose the color, add volume or texture. Once she added in fake, crunchy snow to create a surround-sound experience. (The audio component is important.)

“You can just keep adding whatever the fuck you want and it’ll keep changing,” she says.

“Like ‘Awkwafina’?” I suggest.

“Oh, my God. I did not plan that at all,” she says, laughing. “But, yeah.”

Sure, maybe the edibles are kicking, but just go with it: What better metaphor for the persona of Awkwafina than slime? Born Nora Lum, “Awkwafina” was just a high school nickname that her friend Kim made up (Kim’s was “Kimbo”). After graduation, Awkwafina became the funny, smart-alecky rapper who achieved Internet fame with the song “My Vag” in 2012. Instead of ending up a passing curiosity in the footnotes of Asian American pop culture, the Awkwafina brand grew. She began to star in movies—like extremely big ones alongside extremely famous people, as in holy-shit-it’s-Rihanna-famous, in Ocean’s 8; and then historic ones like Crazy Rich Asians and small, critically beloved ones like The Farewell, which led to a Golden Globe for Best Actress last year.

Awkwafina has become only more ubiquitous since, popping up in everything from her own Comedy Central series, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, and four-quadrant blockbusters like Jumanji: The Next Level to commercials for Google’s Pixel phone. The pace will just ramp up—she’ll appear in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid; a Netflix comedy with Sandra Oh, in which they play sisters; and the Apple TV+ movie Swan Song, starring Mahershala Ali. “Yes, I always feel impostor syndrome because there are so many talented people out there,” she says. “But I’m not going to today because I worked really fucking hard.”

Her exponentially increasing fame as Awkwafina, though, creates a tension: The slime takes on a life of its own, like in Flubber or The Blob. Awkwafina is an invention that is both an extension of herself and a creation that exists independently in the world. She introduces herself to people by her birth name, even as most of the planet knows her as Awkwafina. At times she talks about both Awkwafina and Nora in the third person. “There is a duality,” she explains. “One is a stage name that entertains, and the other sleeps, eats, pees in the morning, and does normal things.”

Fame is not a cure for depression. It’s just not. It’s not necessarily the cause of it, but it’s also not the cure of it.

As A24 was starting to release Lulu Wang’s film The Farewell, in which Awkwafina stars as Billi, a Chinese American woman who travels to China to see her dying grandmother, the question of billing became a small flash point. Should the movie poster credit her as Awkwafina or as Nora Lum? “I, from the beginning, had said that we are not casting Awkwafina; we’re casting Nora,” says Wang. “Ultimately, everyone on the financial management side felt that we couldn’t sell the film as well if people didn’t know exactly who she was, and that her face wasn’t enough. And so it would be a missed opportunity if we didn’t use Awkwafina. Philosophically, I wish that we had gone with Nora Lum.”

“It wasn’t the time,” says Lum. “I’d been Awkwafina in my first movie, I’d been Awkwafina in my first YouTube video. I haven’t had the kind of sign that it’s my time yet to be like, ‘It’s Nora now.’ I wonder what it will take to get me there. I still feel like I have a lot to learn on this journey.”

The conversation inevitably turns existential. After all, since Awkwafina is her own invention, isn’t everything Awkwafina does a part of Nora? Still, she feels the schism, in part because Awkwafina was a way for her to push past her depression and ADD—aspects of her mental health she has had to manage since she was a teenager. “Awkwafina is still someone that comes without all of the layers of anxiety. She is more confident than Nora,” she says. “Nora does hide behind her still. I don’t see how Nora exists in Awkwafina’s world yet. I don’t see how I could have done this without Awkwafina, which is weird.”

Even on the set of Crazy Rich Asians, the director, Jon M. Chu, noticed the split. When the cameras were rolling, Lum was doing a huge, chatterbox performance as Peik Lin, and afterward she would be quieter and want to make sure people were happy. “She was so nervous,” Chu remembers of shooting Lum’s first scene for the film. “That confidence was on when we shot, and not on when we cut.”

We hold our respective slimes up to the camera. Mine looks like yellow spray foam insulation or fake cellulite in a plastic surgeon’s office; hers, misty blue with white speckles, looks like planet Earth from an astronaut’s perspective. She adds a “signature” to it—a little smiley face, and tops it off with a “George Washington wig” of shaving cream.

“The thing is, though,” she says, looking at the slime, “whatever you start with won’t change that much.”

#RHOA #TWIRL: Kenya Moore Debuts a New Hair Color!

Kenya Moore is stepping into the light — at least where her hair color is concerned. The Real Housewives of Atlanta hair care entrepreneur switched up her signature long, dark brown strands for a sunnier new shade that the Georgia beauty called "peachy."

Kenya was all smiles in a plunging, peach, silk number with a princess sleeve detail and a simple, diamond necklace. Kenya's waist-length, loose waves got a bright makeover with warm, honey highlights and rich, caramel undertones.

Naturally, Kenya made sure her beauty look was equally on point with a glowing complexion, lush lashes, and a shiny gloss in a similar hue of pinky peach.

Kenya is not one to change her go-to, glam hair — especially when it comes to color. The Kenya Moore Haircare founder has been frank about her love of her natural hair, including her recent discovery of a few silver strands.

#HipHopNews: Staten Island Producer's Murder Captured In Detail On Studio's Doorbell Cam!

Recording studios have often been the target of some horrific crimes. Run-DMC legend Jam Master Jay was gunned down at his Jamaica, Queens studio in 2002, while Tupac Shakur was shot several times in the lobby of New York City’s Quad Studio in 1994.

According to the New York Daily News, another murder at a Staten Island recording studio took place on Saturday (January 17) — and it was all caught on surveillance. In the clip, burgeoning entrepreneur Jahade Chancey answers the door and is ambushed by two armed assassins.

Video from the Ring doorbell camera shows one man, wearing a hoodie and mask, carrying what looks like an assault rifle. Once Chancey opened the door, the gunman pushed his way inside, followed by a second attacker armed with a handgun.

The pair then shot the 23-year-old in the back multiple times and fled. Emergency responders rushed Chancey to Staten Island University Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

“They took away a beautiful child,” Chancey’s mother Lashon Stockton said. “My son is an entertainer, what they call a hype man. Always dancing. He loved old-school music.”

Chancey and some of his friends opened Demonlow Studios last August and represented local rap artists Snoop, Bellagio and BroGod.

“No children, never been in jail, I don’t think he ever had a fight,” his mother said. “He had no beef with anybody. His friends are great, so I know it wasn’t a setup. When they were opening the door, the person was trying to push in, so they were holding the door. They didn’t even see that he had a weapon.”

Stockton is hoping police are able to find the suspects or someone who knows them will turn them in.

“I’m just praying that someone will see that video, because you always have one person that does not like you that would love to see you underground,” Stockton said. “Somebody say something, please, anonymously.”

Wendy Williams Threatens Her Brother After Alleging She Didn’t Attend Mom’s Funeral ‘I’ve Got Receipts’!

The talk show host did not mince words on Monday morning while addressing Tommy Williams’s public comments

Wendy Williams called out her brother on her talk show Monday morning after he alleged she didn’t attend their mother’s funeral.

In a rare moment of family drama on public display, Williams took a few minutes to address her younger brother, Tommy Williams, who had made headlines days prior after he shamed Wendy for allegedly not attending their mother’s funeral service.

“What makes somebody not go to their mother’s funeral? I don’t understand not giving a salute to the one person who was always there and showed you support,” Tommy said in a YouTube video. “I don’t get how you can just move on and act like nothing happened.”

Tommy Williams claimed Wendy did attend their mom’s wake ceremony — which typically occurs before a funeral service — with her son Kevin Hunter Jr. He made sure to mention that her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter Sr., did attend the funeral despite her absence.

On The Wendy Williams Show, Williams acknowledged the online chatter her brother’s video created and decided to speak on it live on-air.

“I was just searching to see what people had to say about last week’s shows or the dresses or the guests we had … We do a nice production here,” said Williams. “I’m minding my own WendyShow.com business and I’m seeing a lot of comments about ‘you’re brother doesn’t like you’ or ‘you better watch your back because your brother is on one’ or ‘Wendy, I can’t believe you’re this kind of person.'”

Looking straight into the camera, Wendy Williams spoke directly to her brother: “Tommy, let me tell you something right now — all you are is my brother. You better stop talking the way you’re talking because now it’s dripping into my comment page.”

She continued: “He’s pegging me to be a person I am not. Honey, you don’t want me to start pegging you to be the person that you are — with full-blown receipts. I could fill the audience with receipts with the leftovers all the way around the block.

“You are my brother, let’s keep it that way. If you want to talk on the internet then you talk about the things that you think you know about yourself. You don’t want to talk about the things I know about you … for sure.”

The stern and tense TV moment was followed up with a bit of Wendy humor.

“By the way, do you like my dress, Tommy?” the talk show diva said.

Wendy Williams announced her mother’s death in December, telling her audience that she had passed “many weeks ago” earlier during the pandemic.

And while like most celebrity moms, Shirley Williams, a retired school teacher, remained behind the scenes of her daughter’s meteoric career, she often won over audiences and Wendy fans with her endearing personality and humor.

One particularly memorable moment between Wendy and her mother ended with the talk show host in tears. In 2010, Shirley Williams shared a story with viewers about how Wendy’s birth brought “a ray of sunshine” to their family, as it occurred just months before Shirley Williams’s mother died of colon cancer.

“In 1964, my family was full of stress and in a lot of darkness because my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. It was not a good time for my family. But then a ray of sunshine came into our lives,” Shirley Williams said at the time.

“What a wonderful blessing it was to us that one was ready to be taken away in October and one brought a ray of sunshine and hope and wonderfully, bubbly personality.”

Wendy also shared that when she was born in July, her mother was on summer break from teaching and yet had the job of caring for a newborn and simultaneously driving more than an hour from their home in Ocean Township, New Jersey to see her dying mother in Elizabeth.

“While one life was lost, one life was gained,” Wendy Williams added. “And maybe that’s why my mother says I turned out so bubbly because I was there to inject new ray and light … to our family.”

Queen Sugar Has Been Renewed For A Sixth Season!

It looks like the Bordelons are sticking around for the long haul as OWN has given Queen Sugar a Season 6 renewal ahead of its Season 5 premiere, reports Deadline.

Considering how popular the acclaimed series is, this news isn’t all that surprising. However, at a time when many shows’ fates hang in the balance due to increased COVID-19 measures and production constraints, it’s nice to have that extra layer of security. Especially because Queen Sugar had its own battles with the ongoing pandemic. Production on the show’s upcoming fifth season shut down in March and the hiatus lasted for seven months.

Several shows that were renewed before the pandemic had their renewals ripped away due to budgetary issues, so there was always the chance that the Louisiana-set drama could succumb to the pandemic.

On the other hand, the lull in production allowed executive producer Ava DuVernay to incorporate topical subject matter like the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests that broke out nationwide over the summer. The cast and crew reunited in September to continue filming and didn’t wrap until almost the end of the year.

“When Ava came to us with the idea to revamp the storyline for the new season after production was halted due to the pandemic, we knew it was the right decision to give our viewers Ava’s unique perspective on the very real issues impacting their daily lives and the affect the demand for racial equality has had on the Black community and our society as a whole,” said OWN boss Tina Perry.

Season 5 of the NAACP Image Award-winning series will debut next month.

Of the early Season 6 renewal, DuVernay expressed her enthusiasm for the show, saying, “What a joy and an honor to continue the stories of Queen Sugar with our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. On behalf of every producer, editor, costumer, grip, writer, cast member and all departments involved in making this series, we’re delighted to delve into a sixth season and to bring our beautiful audience more of the Bordelon family.”

OWN’s CEO, Oprah Winfrey, also counts herself as a fan of Queen Sugar and looks forward to what DuVernay has planned for the show’s future.

In a statement to Deadline, she said, “The way Ava creates space to allow these characters to embody real-world experiences is television at its finest and we are proud to continue this ground-breaking series. I hear from so many people that they see themselves in the Bordelon family, and my hope is that through this kind of storytelling the hearts and minds of people are opened for a deeper understanding and empathy of one another.“

Garth Brooks To Perform At Joe Biden's Inauguration!

Garth Brooks is the latest musical act announced to perform at Joe Biden’s upcoming inauguration.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee shared the news on Monday (January 18), stating that Dr. Jill Biden personally reached out to the country legend, who joked that he’ll most likely be “the only Republican at the ceremony.”

Entertainment Tonight also caught up with the “Thunder Rolls” superstar, who spoke to reporters about his upcoming performance at this week’s swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol building, where Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States and Kamala Harris as vice president on Wednesday (January 20).

"This is not a political statement, this is a statement of unity," the 58-year-old told reporters, according to the outlet. "This is kind of how I get to serve this country.”

“I’ve played for every president there is, since Carter, with the exception of Reagan,” said the musician. “This is an honor for me to get to serve... and it's one of the things that, if my family is around, no matter who the president-elect is, it's an honor to be asked."

Without giving away any specific song he plans to play at the event, Brooks teased “two or three options” are being considered. "We were lucky enough to do 'We Shall Be Free' at the Obama inauguration, so I don't think you'll see that here,” said Brooks, who is the latest musical act expected to perform at the inauguration.

In addition to Brooks, the TV special, titled Celebrating America, will also see headliner Lady Gaga singing the national anthem, with co-headliner Jennifer Lopez delivering a presentation of her to celebrate the Biden-Harris administration.

Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Foo Fighters, and Jon Bon Jovi have also been among the bevy of musicians to deliver performances for the televised event, which will be attended by members of Congress as well as former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. (It’s been previously reported that the 45th POTUS, Donald Trump, will not be attending Biden’s inauguration.

Dwyane Wade’s kids grossed out by his provocative photo on Instagram!

Miami Heat icon Dwyane Wade’s use of social media is well-documented, but an Instagram photo of a strategically naked Wade celebrating his 39th birthday was enough to make his own children cringe.

Both Zaire and Zaya Wade expressed their displeasure of the photo of Dwyane Wade and his wife,

Gabrielle Union, apparently celebrating Dwyane Wade’s birthday in an intimate fashion.

Dwyane Wade has always been open about how important his children are to him, which may lead some to wonder why he chose to post such a provocative photo of himself that his children could see.

Choosing to present himself in such extravagant fashion is a unique choice for Dwyane Wade, with at least one NBA player, Bradley Beal, getting a chuckle out of the decision.

In the end, Dwyane Wade didn’t violate any laws or social media rules and was together with his wife at the time the photo was taken. Given this decision, the anticipation for what photo will be posted next year for Dwyane Wade’s milestone 40th birthday has likely been heightened.

Kyrie Irving Bought George Floyd’s Family A House!

NBA player Kyrie Irving bought George Floyd’s family a house, the New York Post reports.

Last May, the world shifted following the murder of George Floyd, which was at the hands of the police in Minnesota. Former NBA forward Stephen Jackson said the Nets player purchased a house for Floyd’s family to share his condolences.

“[Floyd’s daughter Gianna is] getting so much love from not just us, but from people all around the world who are showing support,” Jackson said on “The Rematch” podcast. “I’m just continuing to do what I said I was going to do; I said I was going to be my brother’s keeper and take care of his daughter and make sure that her next days are her best days. I had a lot of my friends — Kyrie Irving bought them a house. Lil Wayne’s manager bought them a Mercedes-Benz. Barbra Streisand gave them stock in Disney,” he said.

“I think God has definitely blessed her. Right now, she’s doing the best she’s ever done; she’s happy. We’re just waiting for all this trial stuff to get out of the way, where she don’t have to keep reliving the situation, and she can go about living her life and being happy.”

According to NPR, Derek Chauvin, the officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck ultimately killing him, is expected to trial alone in March. He faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Shout out to Irving, and rest in peace, George Floyd!

Riley June Williams: Woman Who Allegedly Stole Laptop From Nancy Pelosi’s Office Arrested And Charged!

The FBI has received a tip in connection to a woman who possibly stole a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.

A new criminal case has been opened after the FBI received a tip that a woman named Riley June Williams stole a laptop during the Jan.6 domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to sell it to Russia. The woman was identified by her former romantic partner in a video inside the Capitol building. According to an affidavit filed on Sunday, the footage showed Williams directing people “upstairs” to Pelosi’s office.

The tip also “also claimed to have spoken to friends of Williams, who showed (the tipster) a video of Williams taking a laptop computer or hard drive from Speaker Pelosi’s office,” the affidavit says, CNN reports. The tipster “stated that Williams intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service.”

The affidavit went on to say that the “transfer of the computer device to Russia fell through for unknown reasons, and Williams still has the computer device or destroyed it.”

While there is no court record of a laptop being stolen, two days after the attack, Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, tweeted that a laptop used for presentations – was stolen. The FBI says the “matter remains under investigation.”

People have been sharing what appears to be videos of Williams leaving the raid scene holding a bag. “Well, I totally captured Riley June Williams fleeing the #CapitolRiot with Pelosi’s laptop/hard drive. Huh,” tweet is captioned along with the video. On Monday, NBC News correspondent Tom Winter tweeted that Williams has been arrested and charged over her role in the Capitol riot.

“The FBI says she told a former partner that she intended to take a laptop / hard drive stolen from Pelosi’s office, ship it to Russia, where a friend would turn it over to the SVR — Russian intel,” the tweet reads.
