The Daily Buzz For August 12 ☕πŸ“°☕

Taylor Swift for Vogue US - September 2019
The political climate in this country is fraught. Suddenly, everything is political in a way that it never was before — especially in fashion. Designers are vocalizing their beliefs through their collections, the decision to dress the First Lady has become more divisive than ever, and Vogue even formally endorsed a candidate for the first time. But the pendulum always swings back in the other direction.
That shift is mirrored in American politics but also surprisingly, American Vogue. After eight years under a Black man, President Barack Obama, the country elected Donald Trump — and since he has been in office, the number of hate crimes has risen significantly. Similarly, after creating such a historic moment last September with BeyoncΓ© and Tyler Mitchell, the first Black photographer to shoot a Vogue magazine cover, CondΓ© Nast's fashion bible put Taylor Swift on the cover of the 2019 September issue.

But Swift's cover may be more political than you would expect. The cover image features Swift, wearing a Louis Vuitton jumpsuit, in a pose not unlike the famous Uncle Sam ‘I Want You’ propaganda poster. Sort-of fitting when you recall that last October, Swift finally broke her silence on political issues with a viral Instagram post and caused a massive spike in voter registration.
Related Stories
The "Me!" singer went on to endorse Democrats for the Tennessee Legislature and called out the Republican running for Senate, Marsha Blackburn. “She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values.”
Swift tells Vogue that she decided to break her silence to remind fans you have to register, you can't just "roll up" to the polls and expect to vote. The move resulted in 65,000 new voters registered in the first 24 hours, according to Vote.org. And considering that the singer isn't afraid to speak her mind politically now, the cover could signify more of the same — she "wants you" to take action.

In fact, Swift's cover makes us think of something else: Jennifer Lawerence's September issue two years ago. Many perceived it as an attack on Trump because Lawrence was posing as Lady Liberty. For the record, Lady Liberty is very much pro-immigration, which is in direct opposition of Trump's xenophobic immigration policies like the Muslim ban and his campaign to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. The base of the statue includes lines from Emma Lazarus’s 1883 sonnet, titled "The New Colossus": "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore." Is Vogue once again employing political imagery with Taylor Swift's photo shoot?
Symbolism aside, not everyone was happy about Swift's cover.
One user pointed out the disconnect between Swift's socially conscious rhetoric and her expensive wares, saying: "Apparently, cognitive dissonance does not exist in the world Vogue magazine inhabits. 'Rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male,' Swift says. Celine coat. Dior shoes."
Another person tweeted: "I don't really want Anna Wintour to retire/leave American Vogue because the lady is simply an icon and beyond that, she knows the business, BUT.... this is a disaster.... a complete, fat, huge one. Is this the September issue of American Vogue? a pity.... almost a disgrace."
Sure her cover may be lacking in imagination, but it is a call to action nonetheless.

#RHOA: Kenya Moore Will Continue Being ‘Icy And Outspoken’ next season Cynthia Bailey Claims!
It sounds like Cynthia Bailey is super excited to have Kenya Moore back on the Real Housewives of Atlanta! The reality TV celeb told HollywoodLife that Kenya would continue to be the very same ‘outspoken’ and ‘icy’ her in season 12, teasing what the fans can look forward to.

Kenya Moore is expected to make her big RHOA comeback later this year when season 12 of the Bravo series is set to premiere and Cynthia is obviously happy to have her partner in crime back by her side.
Fans remember all too well that Kenya added an iconic fierceness to the series and as her friend suggested, it sounds like that is not going to change after she returns.

While chatting with HollywoodLife, Cynthia told the news outlet that ‘I think that when you become a mom, it definitely changes you, but in terms of her being the same icy and outspoken Kenya, she has not gone anywhere. You can definitely look forward to all of the shenanigans of Kenya Moore for season 12. Kenya had a short break from the show as well, so you can get ready. She’s definitely falling back in like the tornado we all love.’

The star went on to rave over Kenya, who she said is one of her closest of friends, some more.
She also gushed over her returning to RHOA, saying that ‘I love that Kenya is back. I love her. I think she has always been great for the show. Kenya’s in a great space in her life and Brooklyn is the happiest, most beautiful baby that I have ever met. She is an amazing mom. To see her get to just love this happy baby is just amazing.’

#Empire: What Will Happen to Jussie Smollett's Jamal on Empire?
The saga of Jussie Smollett is over for Fox for now? At the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour, Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment, confirmed the embattled actor would not return for the upcoming sixth and final season of Empire despite his contract renewal.

Collier said they announced his contract renewal along with the sixth and final season renewal because Fox was still gathering "all the information" in an effort "to make a good decision at the time." But Collier reiterated Lee Daniels' previous comments and said, "Lee's right there are no plans for Jussie to return to Empire."
When the sixth season was announced, the network said, "By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett's option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire."

So, where's Jamal? "He's on his honeymoon!" Collier told a small group of press after the panel. "Lee has spoken a lot about the situation and the story will reflect it, but…you'll see pictures of him in the background. He's on his honeymoon in the storyline…"
As for the future of Empire beyond the final season, Collier said, "We're in the Lee Daniels business, we're in the Danny Strong business, if there's more story to tell, we want to hear it."

Collier kept promising Empire will get the final season send-off "it deserves." The network wants to "truly give the fans and all the people that made the great show the send-off they deserve."
In a press release about the final season, Fox said the upcoming sixth and final season "promises to be filled with drama, shocking surprises and more jaw-dropping moments."

Collier said viewers are in for "surprises in the beginning of the season that you're going to love and I really think Empire is going to really go out on a high."

#HipHopNews: Quavo To Exec Produce Cartoon Series Based on Atlanta’s Hip-Hop Scene
Hip-Hop has come a long way from the days when rappers making cameos in big time Hollywood movies and TV shows were considered a huge deal for the culture. Nowadays not only are rappers doing their thing on the silver screen and on the tube, but they’re also getting in on the animation game.

Just a few months after Vince Staples’ Adult Swim project Lazor Wulf was announced, the Migos’ Quavo broke the news that he and Imagine Entertainment’s co-founder Brian Grazer are working together on an animation project inspired by Atlanta’s Hip-Hop scene.
According to Complex the ATLien and Grazer are set to executive-produce a “transformative franchise” but unlike the mature content found in Staples’ Lazor Wulf, Quavo’s vision is being crafted to accommodate the children of the culture.

“I have long seen how hip-hop as well as our music (Migos) really impacts kids,” Quavo said in a press release Thursday announcing the new animated franchise series aimed at kids ages 8-12. “I’ve loved animation my whole life whether on TV or in movies and I wanted my first jump into this premium content world to be a show just for kids. It will definitely reflect the creativity, love, and families in and around the NAWF side of Atlanta where we grew up.”

The series will draw from the Atlanta hip-hop scene and marks a partnership between Imagine’s Marginal Mediaworks, Imagine Kids+Family, Quality Control Music, and Motown. Quality Control’s Pierre “Pee” Thomas and Kevin “Coach K” Lee will produce alongside Dan Altmann and Capitol Music Group’s Brian Nolan and Ryan Allingham.
Sounds like Quavo and company are about to fill a space needed for the kids who don’t have many cartoons to choose from that they can relate to. Coach K said as much when sharing his thoughts on the upcoming project.
“When I was growing up there was very little media that had brown and black skinned kids feeling heard or seen and the ones that did stood out and served as a crucial roadmap through our childhoods,” he said. “I’m about inclusive stories that address all kinds of situations that kids of ALL ethnic and financial backgrounds experience and to give them a common tool to learn and grow.”

No word yet on when the series will premier but expect some original music and merchandise to accompany it’s release when the time comes.

SURPRISE?…..NOT! Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Split After Less Than a Year of Marriage
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have called it quits less than a year after tying the knot.

“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep said in a statement. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

Rumors of a split between Cyrus, 26, and Hemsworth, 29, began on Saturday, after the “Mother’s Daughter” singer posted a photo of herself on Instagram in which she was not wearing her wedding ring.

“Mute me if you don’t want SPAMMED,” she captioned the post, which featured Cyrus sitting in a chair while wearing a black bustier top with a matching pair of black pants.
Although Cyrus is not wearing her wedding ring in the image, she is wearing multiple bracelets and necklaces.
In response to the image, her older sister Brandi Cyrus commented, “Boooooooooooooom!”
The photo was taken while Cyrus vacationed with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter in Italy — a trip which took place just one week after Carter’s split from Jenner after a year of marriage.
On Friday, Carter posted a photo of the pair joined by two friends while sailing around Lake Como. She later posted a snap of the pair wearing sexy swimsuits.

While Carter wrote in the caption, “rock the boat, don’t rock the boat baby ⚓️,” her ex Jenner, 35, commented, “Hot girl summer πŸ”₯.”
Earlier this summer, Cyrus opened up about how she doesn’t “fit into a stereotypical wife role.”
“I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique,” Cyrus told Elle for its August 2019 cover story, adding that the details of their love life are something she chooses to keep private.
“I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it,” she said. “I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a f—ing apron cooking dinner? I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women.”

Cyrus added: “People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still f–ing good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth, who met in 2009 on the set of Nicholas Sparks’ romantic drama The Last Song, had a rocky, on-again, off-again relationship for years before he proposed in 2012.
The two ended their engagement and broke up a year later, before reconciling in 2015.
While Cyrus and Hemsworth were committed to each other for years, neither were too concerned about actually tying the knot. But that all changed in December 2018 when they wed during an intimate ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tennessee.
After facing the unthinkable when their beloved Malibu home burned down the previous months during the California wildfires, the couple became closer than ever.

“The timing for their wedding makes perfect sense. They, like many others, endured a painful loss which deepened their bond,” a friend of the singer said after the pair got married.
“They don’t have doubts about their relationship,” a Cyrus source added. “They both wanted to get married. They have both matured a lot, and it seemed like the perfect time for them to get married.”

Boom! Uzo Aduba is a Spitten image of Shirley Chisholm In First Look At FX’s 'Mrs. America'
FX has released the first images from their upcoming limited television series, “Mrs. America.” The network was spot on with the casting, as they have chosen the talented Emmy-award winning Uzo Aduba to play Shirley Chisholm, and the photo is everything!

Scheduled for a 2020 release, the nine-episode series is told through the eyes of Academy Award winning actress, Cate Blanchett, as Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative woman, along with second-wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus. Late last year, pre-production information was released, getting us all excited for this historic girl-power project.

Deadline reports: Mrs. America tells the true story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, played by Blanchett. Through the eyes of the women of that era — both Schlafly and second-wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus — the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the ’70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted our political landscape.
According to Black Film, the “Orange Is The New Black” star was one of the 11 new additions added to the cast since the initial announcement. Surely Uzo is excited to play this iconic woman. Shirley Chisholm marked her name in history when she became the first African-American congresswoman, as well as the first African-American Presidential candidate to receive the nomination of a major party in 1972.
Known for her brazen campaign slogan, “Unbought and Unbossed,” Chisholm repped the Democratic Party and scoffed in the face of racism during a time when tensions were still high coming off of the Civil Rights Movement.

Rose Byrne (“Damages”) as women’s rights leader Gloria Steinem, Margo Martindale (“The Americans”) as congresswoman Bella Abzug, James Marsden (“Westworld”) as conservative congressman Phil Crane, and Tracey Ullman (“The Tracey Ullman Show”) as active ERA member and mother of the women’s movement Betty Friedan are amongst those that round out the cast of characters that have chosen to take on the roles of changemakers who have impacted our country.

There’s no doubt this series has some relevancy to our political climate today, as the issue of women’s rights is a never-ending topic. We are so hyped to see what Uzo does with the strong character, which is the total opposite of the mentally inept, yet articulate and lovable Suzanne she played for seven seasons on “OITNB.”

#BoxOfficeNews:'Hobbs & Shaw' Repeats at #1 with 25.4 Million and 'Scary Stories' Leads Newcomers with $20.8M
It wasn't as close a race at the top of the weekend box office as we thought it might be heading into the weekend as Universal's Hobbs & Shaw held on much better than expected and easily retained the #1 spot for a second week in a row. As for the weekend's crowd of six new wide releases, CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark led the way with nearly $21 million, followed by a decent performance from Paramount's Dora and the Lost City of Gold while Fathom and Trafalgar's release of Bring the Soul: The Movie appears to have eked its way into the top ten.

Leading the weekend was Hobbs & Shaw for the second weekend in a row. The film held on quite well in its second weekend, dipping just -51% for an estimated $25.4 million sophomore frame and a domestic cume that now stands at $108.5 million.

Internationally, Hobbs & Shaw added another $60.8 million internationally, pushing its overseas cume to $224.1 million for a global tally that now tops $332 million as it enters its second week in release. This week saw the film open in five new markets including a $6.9 million launch in France, a $2.6 million debut in Italy and a $1.6 million opening in Belgium. The film has still yet to open in Korea, where it will debut on August 14, followed by an August 23 launch in China.

In the runner up position is where we find the first of the weekend's five new wide releases in CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The PG-13 thriller topped pre-weekend expectations and delivered an estimated $20.8 million this weekend. The $25 million production received a "C" CinemaScore from opening day audiences while playing to a weekend crowd that was 57% female and 54% of the overall audience was aged 25 or older.

Disney's The Lion King ended up in third place, delivering an estimated $20 million. The film's domestic cume now stands at $473 million as it enters its fourth weekend in release.

Internationally, The Lion King launched in Japan this weekend with an estimated $9.3 million for a second place finish. The film's international cume now totals $861.5 million for a global tally reaching $1.334 billion, topping Beauty and the Beast ($1.263b) to become the highest grossing film among Disney's "live-action" reimaginings not to mention the 12th highest grossing worldwide release of all-time. Additionally, depending on how you look at it given media and industry confusion over whether the film is truly live-action or animated, The Lion King is now the highest grossing "animated" release of all-time worldwide, topping Frozen's $1.276 billion.

Paramount's release of Dora and the Lost City of Gold saw the live-action adaptation of the animated Nickelodeon series debut with an estimated $17 million. The film received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences while playing to a weekend crowd that was 57% female and 54% of the overall audience was aged 25 or older.

Internationally, Dora debuted in 11 overseas markets this weekend with an estimated $2.5 million. Leading the way was Russia with an estimated $878,000 opening. The film will continue to expand internationally over the next few months ending with a November 7 release in Brazil.

Rounding out the top five is Sony's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, dipping -42% as it entered its third week in release with an estimated $11.6 million. The film's domestic cume now stands at just over $100 million.

Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi among ejections in fight between Wings and Mercury πŸ‘€
Some of the WNBA’s biggest names were thrown off the court in Phoenix on Saturday night as a near brawl broke out between the Mercury and Dallas Wings.
Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Briann January, Kristine Anigwe, Kayla Thornton and Kaela Davis were all sent back to their locker rooms at Talking Stick Resort Arena after punches were thrown midway through the fourth quarter.

The conflict began with some physical play in the paint by Anigwe on Griner with the Dallas rookie getting a few shots in on the six-time All-Star. That pushed Griner over the edge and the retaliation escalated quickly.
Griner had to be held back by multiple people on the court after chasing down Anigwe. Taurasi, who was inactive for the game with an injury, immediately jumped off the bench to aide Griner.
“Today I went on the court to make sure my teammate didn’t get jumped,” Taurasi told the Arizona Republic after the game. “(Griner) got punched in the face and then someone ran on her back and threw punches at her face. I would do that 100 times out of 100 times.”
Griner did not speak to the media after the game.
It hasn’t been a great season for either the Phoenix Mercury or Dallas Wings so far with both teams under .500 and looking to climb back into contention. The game on Saturday was only Anigwe’s second with the Wings. Dallas acquired the forward last week from the Connecticut Sun for Theresa Plaisance.

The Wings went on to defeat the Mercury, 80-77.

#TECHNEWS: Samsung Unpacks The New Galaxy Note 10 & Note 10 Plus In Brooklyn
Galaxy Note fans rejoice, the wait for the next iteration in Samsung’s stylist based flagship model is here. Last Thursday in Brooklyn, the South Korean tech giant led by its CEO DJ Koh unpacked the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus.

The first thing you will notice about the new Note 10 and Note 10 Plus is how beautiful of a device it is and of course, the size of it. Coming in 6.3 inches is the Galaxy Note 10, while the luxurious Note 10 Plus is a 6.8-inch marvel. In hand, I was impressed at how light both devices were despite the plus version being slightly heavier. They didn’t feel ridiculous while I played around with the phones for a bit. Like the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus both variations of the Note 10  Dynamic AMOLED With HDR10+ certification and Dynamic Tone Mapping giving users a complete edge to edge experience with no distractions. Improving on the S10 design where they placed the hole-punched front-facing camera on the right of the screen, it is now a single camera located in the middle of the  Note 10’s screen.

Gone on both models is the headphone jack, unfortunately. Samsung claims it made the decisions to part with it to free up space phone for more battery capacity. So you will be forced to either go wireless or use the USB-C headphones that come with the phone. You can also use a dongle adaptor, Samsung does not supply you with one sadly. While on the subject of the battery, the Note 10 packs a 3,5000 mAh versus the Note 10 Plus 4,300 mAh. Both models do feature wireless charging, and 30-minute quick charging using a 45-watt wired charger that Samsung boasts will last the entire day.

The button configuration on the phone has also changed. The Bixby button has been removed. It is now replaced with the power/lock button on the left side of the phone directly underneath the volume controls. If you want to trigger Bixby, just press and hold down the button, to open the camera, press the button twice.

As far as storage, the Note 10 comes with 256GB while the Note 10 Plus comes with either 256 or 512GB. The MicroSD card slot is not on the Note 10 but is present on the Note 10 Plus. The lite version of the Note 10 packs 8GB of RAM versus 12GB for the Plus. The phones come in an array of different colors which Samsung labels with “Aura” due to the fantastic shine each color gives off. The one model that caught everyone one’s eye, including mine, was the “Aura Glow” finish, which was absolutely stunning in person.
Both the Note 10 and Note 10 Plus utilize the same in-screen fingerprint reader used in the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus. While there are a good number of differences, both models are still relatively the same with a slight edge going to the Note 10 Plus understandably.

The Pro-Grade camera system introduced with Galax S10 and S10 Plus gets a boost. Users will still be able to seamlessly switch among the different lens located on the rear. Instead of them being positioned horizontally like on the Galaxy S10, the cameras are now vertical. As mentioned about there is only one front-facing camera now. Samsung notes that better software for taking portrait selfies and now “Night Mode” allowed for the removal of the second camera.

12-megapixel dual-aperture lens
16-megapixel wide-angle lens
12-megapixel telephoto lens
10-megapixel front-facing camera
Where the two models differ is the Note 10 Plus’ inclusion of a fourth 3D depth-sensing camera on the back. It will allow users to take portrait video (Live Focus Video), allowing blur effects, so the subject is the main focus. Note 10 Plus owners will also be able to draw on top of their photos and videos using the S Pen now with a new feature called  AR Doodle. It was a hit among everyone at the event. If you shoot a video of someone while using AR Doodle, the camera will track their movements so everything you drew on them will follow them. Another cool feature AR Doodle will allow is the ability to save the file you created as either a JPEG or movie file. Once saved, you will be able to share it on any platform and not with just Note 10 users, unlike Apple’s Live Photo feature.

Samsung also showed off the 3D depth-sensing camera’s ability to scan objects and turn them into a moveable 3D render. During the presentation, we got to see “DepthVision” in action using a teddy bear, I also someone do a person, and both were very accurate.

Last but certainly not least, Samsung introduced to Zoom-In-Mic video recording. While filming, users will be able to push background noise aside to focus on the sounds they want. Plus a new and improved version of “Super Steady” helps to film action sequences while removing bumps and shakes.
There is still a country for people who love to work with stylists. Samsung has brought back the S-Pen with some upgrades. Last year’s version of the peripheral introduced Bluetooth capability allowing Note 9 owners to do things like snap a picture by just using the S Pen remotely. The Note 10’s S Pen gets an upgrade. You will now be able to operate the phone and certain features using gestures or as Samsung describes it Air actions.

By holding down the button and flicking your hand left, right, up and, down, you will be able to switch cameras, change songs on Spotify or even sitch slides during a PowerPoint presentation. There are more advanced gestures, for example, if you make a circular motion, you can zoom in or out while using the camera. While trying it out, it didn’t work perfectly, but after a few tries, I was able to get some of the gestures to work. Nothing some practice won’t fix, but I don’t think its something most Note users will be using all of the time.
