The Daily Buzz For July 12 ☕πŸ“°☕

Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore is first woman on SLAM cover in 20 years
SLAM Magazine, which describes itself as “the basketball Bible,” has Lynx star Maya Moore on the cover of its most recent edition.
Two things about that:
1. Moore is the first woman on the cover since 1998 and just the second woman on the cover ever (Chamique Holdsclaw is the other). The first instinct is to wonder what took SLAM so long and to wonder why more women’s basketball players haven’t graced the cover in the meantime as the sport has grown dramatically in the last two decades.

2. If a women’s basketball player was going to break that string, though, it absolutely needed to be Moore. She’s won at every level — college, overseas, WNBA and Olympics — and is the most iconic player of this generation (if not of all-time).

Local author Steve Marsh’s story is worth a read, too, nicely weaving together her basketball beginning, her faith, her legacy and her relationship with her mother. A snippet:

But basketball role models aside, it was Maya’s mom Kathryn Moore who drove her to basketball greatness, literally if not figuratively. When Maya was 11, the two of them moved from Jefferson City, MO, to Atlanta. “Went to four different middle schools,” she remembers. “So along with my faith and my mom, basketball was my constant.” But when I bring up my theory about a crazy dedicated parent being behind almost every crazy dedicated athlete—at that middle school age, I opined, most kids just don’t realize what it takes to be great—and ask her if it was her mom who pushed her, Maya sort of demurs and points at herself. “I was a kid who loved to play,” she says, “which is the beautiful part of my story.”

Papa John's founder John Schnatter apologizes for using N-word on conference call
John Schnatter used the racial slur during a conference call in May.
Papa John's founder and chairman John Schnatter apologized on Wednesday for using the N-word in a conference call in May, admitting that he had used "inappropriate and hurtful language."

"Regardless of the context, I apologize," Schnatter said in an email to Forbes, which first reported the remarks Wednesday. "Simply stated, racism has no place in our society."
According to Forbes, Schnatter made the remark in a call with Papa John’s executives and the marketing agency Laundry Service on how to prevent negative public relations incidents.
When asked how he would keep his distance from online racists, Schnatter said that “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s,” and that he never faced criticism for it.

Schnatter also said when he was growing up in Indiana, people dragged African-Americans from trucks until they died.
After learning of Schnatter’s comments, Laundry Service owner, Casey Wasserman, ended its relationship with Papa John’s, Forbes reported. In an email to NBC News, a spokesperson for Wasserman refused to confirm that, saying the company had no comment.

Papa John’s condemned Schnatter's remarks, saying the company was “built on a foundation of mutual respect and acceptance.“
"We are committed to maintaining a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace for all of our corporate and franchise employees,” the company said in a statement to NBC News. “We take great pride in the diversity of the Papa John’s family, though diversity and inclusion is an area where we will continue to strive to do better."

Shares for the company fell nearly 5 percent after the reports Wednesday. The company is down 13 percent so far this year.
Schnatter also resigned as vice chairman from the University of Louisville Board of Trustees Wednesday. Chairman J. David Grissom said he spoke with Schnatter and said his comments were inappropriate, but “do not reflect his personal beliefs or values.”

“No member of the board of trustees condones racism or insensitive language regardless of the setting,” he said in an email to NBC News. “The University of Louisville embraces and celebrates diversity and is a supporter of all its students and stakeholders regardless as to their identity. The board appreciates his 2 years of service and thanks him for his generous support for so many years.”

The university also posted a statement on its official Twitter account.
In 2017, Schnatter resigned as CEO of the pizza chain nearly two months after he said that the controversy over NFL players' protesting during the national anthem was “polarizing the customer," and "polarizing the country.” The company, which had a sponsorship with the NFL, apologized for Schnatter’s remarks in a series of tweets.
“We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players’ movement to create a new platform for change,” the company said.

The NFL and Papa John’s agreed to end the sponsorship in February.

#RHoA: Cynthia Bailey Drools About the Secret New Man in Her Life at Essence Fest
Cynthia Bailey is preparing to be an empty-nester, with her only daughter heading off to college this fall, but she might not be alone for long.
A year after her divorce from Peter Thomas, the 51-year-old Real Housewives of Atlanta star reveals she’s happily seeing someone new, and she is finally ready to get serious again.

“I definitely want to date exclusively now — just one guy,” she tells PEOPLE, speaking at Essence Fest on Sunday, where she attended McDonalds’ annual #365Black Awards and spoke about black entrepreneurship. She continued, “I’ve recently met someone who I really like. I am looking forward to seeing where things go.”

After splitting with Thomas in 2017 and briefly dating Will Jones, Bailey feels more open than ever to romantic commitment.
“When I first got divorced I was pretty closed,” Bailey says. “The door was closed to marriage, and the door has opened itself back up. I’m not kicking it open but it ain’t closed.”
Even though she has moved on, there is no bad blood with her most recent ex, Jones.

“Things didn’t work out for us, but I think he’s an amazing guy,” she says. “I have a lot of respect for him and wish him nothing but the best.”

Her relationship with Jones suffered when the two went public, so Bailey says she wants to make sure the “foundation” is solid with her new guy this time around.
While her love life seems under control, Bailey’s emotional energy is spent preparing for her daughter Noelle’s departure.
“It’s like a happy sad,” Bailey says of Noelle’s upcoming move to Howard University. “She’s my one and only so I’m very invested and emotional with all things Noelle. She is the wind beneath my wings.”
Bailey, who was part of McDonalds #365Black celebration at Essence Fest – and even passed out hot fries to festival goers – says she has a number of entrepreneurial projects to keep her busy, including running her Cynthia Bailey sunglasses line.

She’ll be sharing her empty-nester journey and updates on her love life with viewers on the next season of Real Housewives of Atlanta.

#Empire: Felicia D. Henderson Inks Overall Deal at 20th TV, Joins 'Empire' as a consulting producer
(THR) The multiyear deal will see her developing family dramas, comedies and adapting graphic novels.
Matthew Jordan Smith
The multiyear deal will see her developing family dramas, comedies and adapting graphic novels.
20th Century Fox Television’s doors remain open for new business.

In a competitive situation, the studio has signed a multiyear, multimillion-dollar overall deal with Soul Food creator Felicia D. Henderson. As part of the pact, she will develop new projects for 20th TV as well as join the company's juggernaut, Empire, as a consulting producer for its fifth season.

Henderson comes to 20th with a lengthy rΓ©sumΓ© and a proven ability to move fluidly from genre to genre, be it muscular-supernatural-action, character-driven dramas or half-hour comedies. She also has a long history of writing comic books, with a catalog that includes Teen Titans, Justice Society of America and Static Shock for DC Comics.

Most recently, Henderson spent two years as a co-executive producer on Netflix’s Marvel drama The Punisher. In addition to Soul Food, Showtime’s longest-running African-American-themed drama series, she also wrote on Gossip Girl and 20th's own Fringe. She began her TV writing career in comedy, working on such half-hour hits as Everybody Hates Chris, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Family Matters.

Henderson singled out 20th TV’s development chief Terrence Carter, who recently moved over from the network and long has been intimately involved in Empire, as a major draw. "I've wanted to work with Terence Carter and his colleagues for a long time," she said Tuesday in a statement. “I’m excited about creating family dramas, adapting graphic novels and I still love writing comedy. I shared all of that with Terence and his drama and comedy development teams and they said, 'Let's go!' It feels great to find a home that’s extremely supportive of everything I'm passionate about."

20th TV’s president of creative affairs Jonnie Davis was similarly effusive: "Felicia is a wildly talented writing-producing-directing triple threat, who Terence and our development team have been captivated by for years, and we are thrilled to bring her into the studio’s fold. Writing on some of the most notable '90s classics to her more powerful contemporary work reflecting our times, she seamlessly genre hops between sci-fi, drama, comedy and even comic book writing. We couldn’t be happier to add her to our bench of all-stars."

The move comes as the studio's own future is far from clear, since it is among the assets the Murdochs intend to sell off. Still, that aforementioned bench of all-stars includes heavyweights like Empire’s newly re-upped Lee Daniels, This Is Us’ Dan Fogelman and Phil Lord & Chris Miller; while others, like Seth MacFarlane and Modern Family’s Steve Levitan, are taking a wait-and-see approach to their futures at the studio.

Henderson’s longtime manager, Darryl Taja, will serve as her producing partner as the pair looks to build out her WaterWalk Entertainment banner. Henderson is repped by UTA and attorney Mark Stankevich.

#ThailandCaveRescue: First footage emerges of boys in hospital
The first footage has emerged from the hospital where 12 Thai boys and their coach are being treated after their dramatic rescue from a flooded cave.
Several boys can be seen in facemasks and hospital gowns, at least one giving a victory sign for the camera.

Meanwhile, reports say the boys and the coach were sedated to stop them panicking during the dangerous rescue.

The Thai Navy Seals also released new video showing the three-day rescue operation that captivated the world.
Sources in the rescue operation, including divers who took part, told the BBC that the boys were heavily sedated ahead of the rescue to prevent them panicking in the dark, narrow, underwater passageways.

They were then strapped to one of two rescue divers tasked with shepherding each of them through the underwater parts of the system, and bundled into stretchers to be carried through the dry parts.
There were conflicting reports in the hours after the rescue about the extent to which the boys had been medicated before they were brought out.

The Thai prime minister on Tuesday denied reports that they had been sedated, saying the boys were given only light anti-anxiety medication commonly provided to soldiers.
But several sources have since confirmed that the boys were only partially conscious as they were brought out.
'A tiny bit of hope'
Earlier on Wednesday, the head of the Thai Navy Seals told the BBC that "hope became reality" with the successful rescue of the boys and their coach from the Tham Luang cave.
"We had a little bit of hope that they might still be alive but we had to do it, we just had to move forward," Rear Adm Arpakorn Yuukongkaew said. "There was only a tiny bit of hope, but that's all we had to work with."
The group was trapped in the cave by rising water and rescued in a dramatic operation that captivated the world.

The complex, three-day rescue saw four boys emerge on Sunday, four on Monday, and the final four boys plus their coach on Tuesday. They survived the nine days before they were found by drinking water dripping from the cave walls, officials said.

All 13 are now in hospital in Chiang Rai city and receiving medical and psychological assistance, but recovering well.
All of the boys lost weight during their ordeal and will remain in hospital for a week, followed by a week's recuperation at home. Public health ministry officials said the first group were all eating normal food and the second group would be put on normal food as of Wednesday.

The third group evacuated on Tuesday are undergoing the same medical check-ups as the first two groups but appeared to also be in good health. There are no cases of serious infections.
The first four boys have already been visited by their families, officials said, and the second group will also be allowed to receive visitors later on Wednesday.

Selena Gomez Wears "Only the Strong Survive" Shirt as a response to Justin Bieber's Engagement!
Selena Gomez was all smiles as she stepped out in New York City on Tuesday. The 25-year-old "Wolves" singer, sporting long hair, was spotted sharing a laugh with pals in the Big Apple. For the outing in the city, Gomez wore gray sweatpants, white sneakers and a black Storets T-shirt with "only the strong survive" written on it.

This sighting of Gomez comes just days after her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, became engaged to Hailey Baldwin. The 24-year-old "Baby" singer proposed to the 21-year-old model on Saturday night while on vacation in the Bahamas. Gomez was asked about the couple's engagement by photographers while out in NYC on Tuesday, but she didn't respond and ignored the question.
Gomez and Bieber dated on and off since 2010, most recently calling it quits in March. After news broke of Bieber and Baldwin's engagement over the weekend, Gomez was spotted enjoying herself on a yacht with her BFFs.

"Selena was surprised an engagement happened this quickly but not surprised Justin would do something like this knowing who he is. At the end of the day though she doesn't really care," one source said. "Selena is totally over him. She had tried again to make it work that last time and it didn't work out."

World Cup 2018 Final Will be France vs. Croatia! As England Loses to Croatia!
The 2018 FIFA World Cup final is set. France and Croatia will play for all the glory Sunday. Third and fourth places will be determined on Saturday when England faces Belgium.

Croatia has never appeared in a World Cup final. France last won the title in 1998 when they beat Brazil 3-0 in a World Cup they hosted.
Croatia went undefeated in Group D, including a convincing 3-0 hammering of Argentina, then beat both Spain and Russia in matches that lasted 2 hours each and both went to penalty kicks. Their semi-final victory against England also needed two periods of extra time. But they won it without the need for penalty kicks.
It took two overtimes, but Croatia get a go-ahead goal in the 109th minute. Croatia will advance to face France in the World Cup final Sunday. England meets Belgium to determine third place.

England was runner-up to Belgium in Group G. Since advancing, England beat Colombia on penalty kicks and knocked off Sweden in the quarterfinals. Harry Kane has 6 goals for England and is looking a sure bet for the Golden Boot Award.

Alexia Jones Accuses Russell Simmons Of Rape, Says She’s Forgiven Him & Will Not Sue
DANG,  Russell Simmons is facing another rape accusation.
Alexia Norton Jones claims the Hip Hop mogul raped her in his Manhattan apartment after a date in November 1990.
Jones, who was a 31-year-old writer, model and performing artist when the alleged assault took place said, “It was such a fast attack.”

She added, “I remember being pushed up against a wall. He pulled my dress up. I must have said no seven to 10 times, and then I acquiesced.”

After the alleged assault, Russell still called Alexia. “When I saw him out after that, I wouldn’t even look him in the eyes,” Jones said. “I thought he was garbage. But he still had the compunction to call me. I became very depressed. It eroded my self-esteem. This is the worst message that it sends, that somebody could in a different circumstance like you but think you are worthless. And he can just take it from you. It’s like the murder of the soul.”

Last spring, Alexia tried to file a report with the New York Police Department, but her case exceeded the statue of limitations.
She now says she has forgiven Russell for the alleged assault and she has no plans of suing him.
Alexia Norton Jones says she is sharing her story to stand with the other women who have accused Russell Simmons of rape.

Russ released the following statement:
At no time did she share these feelings about her first sexual encounter with me, which took place roughly 28 years ago. I have taken multiple lie detector tests that affirm I never sexually assaulted anyone.
Alexia and I dated, were intimate and attended multiple events together after she alleges the incident occurred in 1990. I considered her a friend for all these years and continue to have a warm relationship with members of her family.
I believe we last spoke in 2006 when she called to express her disappointment over the fact that I had not attended an event honoring her father.

LeSean McCoy Responds! Claims Abuse Allegations Are “Completely False”
All may not be what it seems, at least according to Lesean McCoy…
Earlier on Tuesday, news hit social media that McCoy had viciously attacked his girlfriend Delicia Cordon. But now the story has taken a completely turn with third-party involvement and Lesean claiming his innocence.

In his own IG post, the Buffalo Bills running back called the claims “baseless and offensive”, while proclaiming the allegations are “completely false”.
In addition, TMZ reports that the attack on Cordon actually happened during a home invasion in which she was hit in the head and locked in a bathroom. Apparently, Delicia was specifically target in the burglary at Lesean’s home with that assailant demanding certain items from the fashion designer.
Although, McCoy has proclaimed his innocence, Delicia’s friends and family still believe his was involved and possibly orchestrated the entire attack.

Paul Reiser On ‘Mad About You’ Revival: “It Likely Won’t Happen”
Not good news for fans who have been hoping for a revival of hit ’90s sitcom Mad About You. Original series co-creator and star Paul Reiser says he’s not optimistic it will happen.

“It’s kind of stuck in the business end of it now,” Reiser told the Tampa Bay Times. “Sony is trying to figure out from their end; that’s where I just walk away and go, call me when you figure it out. I don’t know what happens at that level. They make their deals with whoever they make their deals with. So we’ll see if it happens. It may not happen. It likely won’t happen. My guess is it won’t happen.”

The reboot had been looking promising, with Sony Pictures TV tapping top comedy showrunner Peter Tolan, to write and showrun the revival and original series stars Reiser and Helen Hunt closing deals to reprise their roles.

The new installment would pick up 20 years after we last Paul (Reiser) and Jamie (Hunt), with the couple navigating their marriage, going through the trials of middle age and dealing with their unpredictable, hard-to-control daughter Mabel.
“We signed up, and then it’s gotten stuck in the business end of it,” Reiser told the Tampa Bay Times. “It’s like, ‘You know, guys, I was very happy not doing it for 20 years, and then you invited us back. And now if you can’t make it happen, it’s not a big deal.’ Things happen, they don’t happen. There’s so many moving parts when you’re working with a studio or broadcaster.”

Mad About You, co-created by Reiser and Danny Jacobson, ran seven seasons from 1992 to 1999 on NBC and won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Sony TV also produced a Mad About You adaptation in China.

Desus and Mero Say Vice Abruptly Ended Their Contract since they’ve signed with Showtime!
Trust that any interview that begins with “can I just be messy off the rip right now?” is going to be brimming with piping hot tea, particularly when it’s a Bossip exclusive. Desus and Mero recently chatted with the drama site to talk about leaving their viral Viceland show behind for a new late-night series at Showtime. Except, according to the two comedians, they technically didn’t get a chance to leave at all — Vice allegedly cut them loose when the company caught wind of the Showtime news. “Vice has us for 2 more months. We did not leave Vice, Vice ended our contract. They were in their feelings because we were leaving,” Desus says. “We could still be doing the show.” Mero’s read on their sudden divorce from Vice: “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”

Both hosts say Vice’s demands became overwhelming to the point of exploitation, prompting them to seek another network. “Viceland wanted 160 episodes a year,” Desus says. “We have no writers, it’s literally me and Mero talking to one another every day. If you want us to do this for 160 episodes, pay us 160 million dollars — otherwise we would have killed each other.” He claims the network begged them to work without vacation time for fear of a ratings plunge: “The channel wanted us to die for this fucking network. We’re also the highest rated show on the network, put some respect on our name, have someone come massage my feet.” Mero adds, “We were literally the LeBron of that network.” Though Mero clarifies, “And we are not divas, we’re flexible dudes. They kinda undervalued us a little bit.” Desus interjects, “Not even a little bit, straight up.”

And now they’re headed to Showtime who will treat them better!

The First Pic of This Is Us Season 3 Is OUT and is Good News for One Character
Production on Season 3 of This Is Us began Tuesday in Los Angeles, and show creator Dan Fogelman is already tweeting sneak peeks of the feel-good family action. The first photo is of one of the camera monitors revealing Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) in a moment of celebration. See? Watson wasn't lying that Beth is alright. Everyone can take a sigh of relief.
\
We don't know yet exactly when Season 3 of This Is Us will pick up with the Pearsons, but it looks like the first scene might be a little while after (or before) Kate's (Chrissy Metz) wedding if Beth and Randall are jubilant instead of freaking out about their ruined car.

Their co-star Mandy Moore told TV Guide that Season 3 will be the show's most ambitious yet and will feature stand-out episodes for both Beth and Toby (Chris Sullivan). The season will also explore Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) time in Vietnam as well as what his relationship with Rebecca was like before they had the Big 3.

This Is Us returns Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.

Starbucks: Goodbye, Plastic Straws will be NO MORE by 2020!
Starbucks announced on Monday it plans to eliminate plastic straws from its 28,000 stores worldwide by 2020.
The company will broaden the manufacture and use of what some in social media have dubbed the "adult sippy cup." It's a plastic strawless lid that will come to replace single-use plastic straws that now inundate its coffee shops.

The company says the move, when fully implemented, could mean a billion fewer plastic straws across its stores each year. And it's a part of Starbucks' $10 million investment in creating recyclable and compostable cups around the world.

The strawless lid has already been in use at many of the company's stores for certain kinds of cold drinks like cold foam and "draft nitro," the coffee drink that comes out of a keg, mixed with nitrogen. Unlike straws, the new lid can be recycled, the company said.
"For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways," Kevin Johnson, president and chief executive officer for Starbucks, said in a statement.
Starbucks' headquarters are in Seattle, where a ban on plastic straws just kicked in.

Other chains are also experimenting with getting rid of straws. In June, McDonald's announced it would start phasing out plastic straws at about 1,300 restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Cissy Houston Addresses Whitney Houston Molestation Claims
Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy Houston is taking issue with claims that her superstar daughter was molested as a child by her cousin, Dee Dee Warwick.

The accusations come from a new documentary, “Whitney,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, focused on the life of late pop star Whitney Houston. Cissy Houston, 84, told People magazine that she only found out about the claims two days before the film’s debut.

Cissy Houston denies that claim in a joint statement with her niece Dionne Warwick to People magazine.

“We cannot, however, overstate the shock and horror we feel and the difficulty we have believing that my niece Dee Dee Warwick (Dionne’s sister) molested two of my three children,” the statement read in part. “I spent many years in recording studios (sometimes with Dionne and/or Dee Dee) where I earned my living. I also went ‘on the road’ with my group The Sweet Inspirations to try to help provide a good life for my family BUT my children always came first in my heart and in my life.”

“When I was away they did not stay with four or five different families; they stayed at home where their longtime babysitter, Phyllis, or my dear friend Bae or their father took care of them. In all the years I traveled Dee Dee, who was 21 years older than Whitney, NEVER BABYSAT for them,” Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick said in the statement.

“Dee Dee may have had her personal challenges but the idea that she would have molested my children is overwhelming and for us unfathomable,” the statement continued. “Neither I, Dionne, nor my son Michael who was very close to his sister, and in the film is VERY candid about their drug use, has ever heard these allegations; we have never heard anything remotely connected to the crimes charged against Dee Dee in the film. How can that be fair to my daughter, to Dee Dee, or to our family?”

The joint statement concluded, “After people have seen the film they will draw their own conclusions and we are not trying to change that. We just want people to know there is another side. While the filmmakers certainly had the legal right to make this film, I wonder at the moral right.”
