Did he do it, OR NOT? Man Claims Rapper DMX Robbed Him at Newark Gas Station!
Newark detectives are investigating a report by a man who said he was robbed at gunpoint by a man who identified himself as DMX and his entourage at a gas station early Sunday.
The man, a 21-year-old Newark resident, told police that he encountered a man who he identified as the rapper at about 12:30 a.m. at an Exxon station on U.S. Highway 21 in Newark, according to the Newark Police Department. He told police he had a brief conversation with the DMX about rap music when a member of the rapper's entourage allegedly flashed a gun and demanded cash.
The man told police he pulled about $3,200 out of his pocket and DMX allegedly grabbed it, according to officials. The rapper and his associates allegedly piled into four black Cadillac Escalades and sped away, he told police.
The man said he followed them and was able to obtain a number from the license plate of one of the vehicles, detectives said.
DMX, whose name is Earl Simmons, performed at a hip-hop concert Saturday night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, according to the rapper's Twitter posts.
Attempts to contact a representative of the rapper were unsuccessful.
Simmons, 42, is originally from Yonkers, New York, and has had several run-ins with the law in South Carolina, where he lives, and in other states where he has performed.
His arrest record includes charges of drug possession, animal cruelty and resisting arrest. He served time in prison in 2010 in Arizona.
No charges have been filed and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department or call the tips line at 877-NWK-TIPS.
