Weekend Box Office: 'Great Gatsby' Nabs $51M, Gives 'Iron Man 3' a Run for Its Money and Peeples wasn't seen by many Peoples
Gatsby looks almost as great as a superhero at the weekend box office.
Leonard DiCaprio's "The Great Gatsby" partied like it was the Roaring '20s with a $51.1 million debut that made it a surprisingly strong runner-up to comic-book blockbuster "Iron Man 3."
Studio estimates Sunday put "Gatsby" at No. 2 behind Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero sequel, which pulled in $72.5 million domestically to raise its total to $284.9 million after just 10 days in U.S. theaters.
With an additional $89.3 million in its third weekend overseas, "Iron Man 3" lifted its international total to $664.1 million and its worldwide haul to $949 million.
"The Great Gatsby" far exceeded expectations by distributor Warner Bros. of a $35 million to $40 million opening weekend.
Director Baz Luhrmann's 3-D adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic was a rare box-office smash for films aimed at older adults during the youth-minded summer season. According to Warner Bros., viewers over 25 made up 69 percent of the film's audience.
"It answers the question that you and I hear all the time from people over 50, `There's nothing for me to see,'" said Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution. "While every studio has the $200 million tentpoles in the marketplace, you still have those who feel that it's not directed at them, which is true. So that's why I think counterprogramming like this is very important."
The weekend's other new wide release, Lionsgate's romantic comedy "Peeples," flopped at No. 4 with just $4.9 million. Produced by Tyler Perry, the movie stars Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington in a meet-the-parents-style farce.
Getting a head start on its domestic launch Friday, "Star Trek: Into Darkness" opened with $31.7 million in seven international markets. Its overseas debut included $13.3 million in Great Britain, $7.6 million in Germany and $5.5 million in Australia.
Starring DiCaprio in the title role as 1920s mystery millionaire Jay Gatsby, the latest Fitzgerald update co-stars Carey Mulligan as his lost love and Tobey Maguire as the friend chronicling their doomed romance.
It was by far the biggest debut ever for filmmaker Luhrmann, whose previous best was $14.8 million for "Australia." In just one weekend, "The Great Gatsby" nearly matched the $57.4 million domestic haul that Luhrmann's top-grossing film, the musical "Moulin Rouge!", managed in its entire run.
"Gatsby" also gave DiCaprio his second-biggest debut, behind the $62.8 million take for "Inception."
The film's success follows a bumpy road to theaters. Originally scheduled for release last December, Warner Bros. pushed it back to summer to give Luhrmann more time to finish his elaborate visual spectacle.
How well the film holds up in coming weeks depends on word-of-mouth from fans. Reviews for "The Great Gatsby" have been so-so, with many critics saying it sacrifices drama and substance for style and dazzle, including Lurhmann's elaborate party scenes backed by a contemporary soundtrack featuring Jay-Z, Beyonce and Lana Del Rey.
"Iron Man 3" was down a steep 58 percent from its opening weekend haul, no surprise given that its $174.1 million domestic debut was the second-biggest ever. The only film to do more business was Downey and company's ensemble adventure "The Avengers," which topped $200 million in its premiere last year.
"The Avengers" held up better in its second weekend with $103.1 million, a drop of only 50 percent. But "Iron Man 3" is on its way to becoming the biggest solo superhero hit worldwide and the second-biggest comic-book adaptation, behind the $1.5 billion "Avengers" payday.
"This is on a trajectory like no other individual superhero movie we've ever seen," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "In less than three weeks, this thing is honing in on a billion dollars. It's just a testament to the incredible popularity of this character."
The movie already has far surpassed the franchise best of $624 million worldwide for "Iron Man 2."
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Judge May Dismiss Case Against NYPD Officer Accused Of Killing Black Teen
A judge in the case against NYPD officer Richard Haste-- stemming from the shooting death of a Bronx teen-- might rule for a dismissal. Haste gunned down 18-year-old Ramarley Graham last year.
Issues with the jury are what caused Supreme Court Justice Steven L. Barrett, to question whether or not the trial should go on.

Supreme Court Justice Steven L. Barrett, after reviewing the grand jury minutes in the indictment of NYPD officer Richard Haste, said Tuesday that prosecutors may have improperly told jurors they did not have to consider what other officers told Haste before Haste made the decision to fire the shot that killed the unarmed 18-year-old.
Lawyers for Haste have said he was repeatedly told by fellow officers they believed Graham had a gun. However, no gun was found on Graham.
"What he heard may have very well informed what he did," Barrett said.
Barrett said he considered the issue very serious and would give the Bronx District Attorney a chance to present the case again to a grand jury if the indictment is thrown out. Barrett instructed lawyers for Haste and the district attorney's office to submit short memos and scheduled a time for them to make oral arguments before the court next week.
Haste pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges last June. He and members of an NYPD narcotics unit burst through the Bronx residence of Graham's grandmother, believing the teen was a drug dealer, and carrying a weapon.
Graham was fatally shot in the chest by Haste.

Despite being allowed to attend the MET Gala and walk the red carpet, Kim was even invited to Anna Wintour’s house the night before for dinner, but looks like Vogue’s official opinion of the Kim Kardashian hasn’t changed at all.

The Rumors Are True, NBC Cancels Meagan Good’s ‘Deception’
I wish we were wrong about this one, but it appears it’s a wrap for one of our favorite NBC shows. In March, we reported the not so good TV news for actors Laz Alonso and Meagan Good.
TV By the Numbers reported that NBC’s new show, ‘Deception’ was likely to be cancelled. For those that never tuned in, the show was created by Liz Heldens, and its plot centered around a famous socialite named Vivian Bowers, who was found dead in a motel room from what appeared to be a drug overdose.
Last month, we chatted with Laz about rumors that the show was being axed and he explained:
We will find out in May if we got season 2. We have our fingers crossed, you know Megan and myself. We appreciate all the support we got this year. I mean people love the show and you know we will see what happens. We have good feelings that we will be back for a season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the show had officially been axed. The site reported:
NBC has begun notifying producers of the fate of its current programming. CANCELED: Deception. NBC’s attempt to capture some of the buzz surrounding ABC’s soapy thriller Revenge opened with signs of hope, earning a 2.0 among adults 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers on Mondays.
However, theMeagan Good starrer quickly faded, wrapping its 11-episode run with an average of 1.2 in the demo.After hearing the news, Meagan wrote a personal message to fans:

On what it’s like to work with BRAVO’s Andy Cohen:
I don’t know Andy Cohen personally. Andy is just Andy Cohen. He’s always fun; He is very serious but his seriousness is done with a lot of humor. I think because of his credentials you know to take him seriously.
On the difference between Fashion & Style:
Well, fashion and style kind of just go together, it’s kind of parallel. I’m not the authority of fashion and I’m not the authority of style. I can’t tell you the difference between fashion and the difference between style. What I can say is I think fashion helps creates style.
On who is the best dressed man on reality TV:
It would have to be Mauricio, Kyle Richards husband from [the Real Housewives of] Beverly Hills

I’m hoping they will remain friends for the duration of their lives. I think it has great potential to do that because they are no longer working together. You don’t have that pressure of creating a story line between the two.
On how the relationship with Kandi soured:
I think Kandi developed ill feelings because I declined her offer to be signed to Kandi Koated Entertainment and I declined because it wasn’t really a fair contract. It was just more beneficial for Kandi than it was me. There was this thing called a three sixty deal. The three sixty deal is where the label gets a percentage of every single thing that artist does, which is fine, those are relevant, but what are you gonna give as the label? If you’re not giving anything then why am I gonna give you a percentage of everything that I do so with three sixty deals the artist is usually given a really big signing bonus. The artist is completely developed by the label. It wasn’t much developing that I needed. Miss Lawrence was already Miss Lawrence before I even met Kandi. I don’t think that that’s fair so we disagreed and that’s all it boils down to, but then after that one thing I think it really boils down to is Kandi doesn’t take rejection well and once I decided not to go through with the contract I explained it to her. I said I don’t think that it’s fair and I’m gonna decline the offer. I co-wrote “Closet Freak” as well, so why am I gonna give you a percentage of everything? It’s not making any sense.
I live in a fabulous penthouse. I drive a nice car and I refuse to become a starving artist because a label wants a huge percentage of all of my money. That is not gonna happen; so then I walked away from it and then later on a year or two later I find out that “Closet Freak” has been taken down and mind you I haven’t gotten a dime from “Closet Freak,” which I am entitled to a percent of the publishing. I haven’t gotten a dime from it. I’m also entitled to a certain percentage as the artist who recorded the song. I haven’t gotten a dime from that either, but I let it go. I’m like okay well whatever, I’m gonna let her have that because I didn’t miss a beat anyway. I’m fine. I’m gonna still eat my caviar honey and feel nothing. It’s no tea. I don’t eat caviar for real, but you understand what I’m saying.
On his future in the music industry:
I love to sing that is something that I do everyday. It is on hold right now because I am really focused on my salon and building my team up. Another reason I put it on hold is because it’s a lot that goes into music. I have to be realistic about what is paying my bills at the moment.
On his lipstick line:
I have a lipstick line it’s called Les Levres, which means lips in French. It’s a hypoallergenic lipstick and I really only have one color and that is geisha girl. It’s really really red, brilliant bright red and I just love it. It will be on the market soon.
On his upcoming T-shirt line:
‘Signed by a Queen’ and basically it’s a lot of different just quotes of my own.There is one that says, “I don’t break laws. I break tradition” and it’s signed by a queen. The one I wore on Fashion Queens says, “Dear officials. I will marry him if I want to” signed by a queen and that’s supporting gay marriage and all that stuff. There is another one that says, “I’m glad I inspired your hate” signed by a queen and so it’s a lot of different quotes.
