It was the sixth time she had been short listed, and this time she beat other musicians such as Kraftwerk and Deep Purple.
There were 15 shortlisted artists, eight will join the hall of fame next year. This was the first year members of the public were allowed to vote.
Other musicians being honoured are Canadian rock band Rush, political hip hop pioneers Public Enemy, female rockers Heart, pianist and singer Randy Newman and blues legend Albert King. Producers Quincy Jones and Lou Adlers will receive the Ahmet Ertegun award.
King will be another musician receiving the honour posthumously. King, who died in 1992, was an American blues guitarist who influenced a host of musicians including Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor and Warren Haynes.

Newman, who has composed for films such as Toy Story, Seabiscuit and Meet the Parents, said he was surprised by the news: "I thought maybe I'd have to die before they let me in," he said, "I'm really glad it happened when I was still around to see it."
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said: "We're always travelling and out there doing it. It can start to feel like you're a tree falling in the forest, but nobody notices. So this kind of acknowledgement is really sweet."
The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles, There are 279 inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which began in 1983.
Congrats to all but for Donna it’s so bittersweet!
