Officials Say Death Toll Has Risen To Nine In Florida Condo Collapse!
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the death toll from the building collapse has risen to nine as search and rescue efforts continue.
She said one victim had died in the hospital, while workers had pulled more bodies from the wreckage since Saturday.
Scores of rescue workers remained on the massive pile of rubble, working to find survivors among the more than 150 people who remain unaccounted for.
“We were able to recover four additional bodies in the rubble as well additional human remains. As of today, one victim passed away in the hospital, and we’ve recovered eight ... victims on site. So, I am confirming today that the death toll is at nine. We’ve identified four of the victims and notified the next of kin.”
Four days after Thursday's collapse, more than 150 people remain unaccounted for in Surfside, and authorities and loved ones fear the toll will go much higher.
Rescue crews found another body in the rubble of a collapsed 12-story condominium tower near Miami on Saturday, raising the death toll to five as they raced to recover any survivors while fighting back fire and smoke deep inside the concrete and metal remains.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the new toll at an evening media briefing, saying the discovery of the body dropped the number of unaccounted for down to 156. She said crews struggling throughout the day in the debris also found other unspecified human remains.
The Miami-Dade Police Department later Saturday said four of the five deceased had been identified, along with the apartments where they were at the moment of the collapse. One of the was the mother of a boy who was rescued the night the building toppled, another couple in their late 70s and early 80s and a 54-year-old man.
Officials said remains they find are being sent to the medical examiner, and they are also gathering DNA samples from family members to help identify them.
Separately, a video posted online showed an official briefing families of missing loved ones. When he said they had found remains among the rubble, people began sobbing.
Throughout the day, rescue workers continued to go over the massive mountain of debris with rescue dogs and sonar searching for any survivors. “Our top priority continues to be search and rescue and saving any lives that we can,” the mayor said.

But crews had to fight flames in the debris during the day. At one point Saturday, a fire hose blasted one of the lower floors on the north side of the tower as white smoke or steam streamed out. A bitter, sulfur-like smell hung in the air.
“The stench is very thick,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, speaking alongside the mayor.
A crane removed pieces of debris from the more than 30-foot pile, and scores of rescuers used big machines, small buckets, drones, microphones and their own hands to pick through the rubble.
For many with missing loved ones, the wait was agonizing. The atmosphere was tense inside a hotel ballroom where around 200 family members were briefed, two people present told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversations.
The two said families frustrated with the slow pace of recovery efforts had demanded permission to go to the scene and attempt a collective shout — an attempt as much to find survivors as a cathartic farewell to those who had died.
Among those awaiting word of loved ones was Rachel Spiegel, whose mother, 66-year-old Judy Spiegel, lived on the sixth floor. Speaking beside her siblings, she said Saturday that “we’re trying to hold it together.”
“I know my mom is a fighter. I know she loves us. I know she doesn’t want to give up. So, you know, it’s day three, so it’s hard,” Spiegel said.
President Joe Biden said via Twitter that he had spoken with DeSantis on Friday to offer assistance as needed.
“My heart is with the community of Surfside as they grieve their lost loved ones and wait anxiously as search and rescue efforts continue,” Biden tweeted.

Authorities announced they are beginning an audit of buildings nearing their 40-year review — like the fallen Champlain Towers South — to make sure they’re safe. The mayor asked other cities in the county to join the building review and said there will be state and federal funding to help.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have joined local and state authorities at the site, DeSantis said. He added that a nearby “sister building” of the collapsed tower is also being looked at because it was built at the same time and with the same designer.
Late Saturday, Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said that a city official had led a cursory review of the nearby Champlain Towers North and Champlain Towers East buildings.
“They didn’t find anything out of the ordinary,” he said.
He emphasized the priority now was on rescuing anyone still alive.
“What we’re doing now is we’re saving lives and we’re bringing people out of the rubble. What we’re going to do in the next phase, after we address support for the families, is we are going to do a very deep dive into why this building fell down,” Burkett said.
Burkett had said earlier he was working on a plan to temporarily relocate residents of the Champlain Towers North, which was constructed the same year and sits about 100 yards away from the collapsed building, and that FEMA has agreed to pay for lodging.
The mayor said he didn't plan to order residents to evacuate, but if he lived there, “I’d be gone.”
Surfside city staffers had also been gathering details about Champlain Towers East, which was built in a different style and apparently was built at a different time.
The news came after word of a 2018 engineering report that showed the building had “major structural damage” to a concrete slab below its pool deck that needed extensive repairs, part of a series of documents released by the city of Surfside.

While officials said no cause for the collapse early Thursday has been determined, DeSantis said a “definitive answer” was needed in a timely manner. Video showed the center of the building appearing to tumble down first, followed by a section nearer to the beach.
The 2018 report was part of preliminary work by the engineering company conducting the building’s required inspections for a recertification due this year of the building’s structural integrity at 40 years. The condominium tower was built in 1981.
A federal agency specializing in disaster losses and structure failures is dispatching a half-dozen scientists and engineers to collect firsthand information on the collapse for use in determining whether to pursue a more thorough study.
The first team members arrived Friday, said Jason Averill, an official at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. That agency also investigated the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11, and more recently, Hurricane Maria devastation in Puerto Rico, among other disasters.
Separately, the government of Israel said it was sending a team of engineering and rescue specialists to assist in the search. Israeli media have reported that some 20 citizens of that country were believed to be among the missing.
Another 22 people unaccounted for were from Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay, including relatives of Paraguayan first lady Silvana de Abdo Benítez.

Samuel L. Jackson, 72, along with actress/comedian Elaine May, 89, and Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann, 82, will all receive honorary Oscars. While Danny Glover, 74, will be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
The Honorary Oscar Award that Samuel L. Jackson will be receiving is awarded to celebrate extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy. And the Humanitarian Award, which is also an Oscar statue, is to praise those whose humanitarian work has credited the larger industry.
Even though this will be the first Academy Award for both Samuel L. Jackson and Danny Glover, Jackson has received an Oscar nomination before for Best Supporting Actor for Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
Academy President David Rubin released a statement on the honorees and said,
“We are thrilled to present this year’s Governors Awards to four honorees who have had a profound impact on both film and society. Tory Lanez Thinks His Uber Car Crash Was No Accident!
Tory Lanez has been embroiled in controversy since his alleged involvement in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting last July. With a proverbial target on his back, the Canadian rapper has been subjected to all kinds of criticism since the incident.
Now, Lanez believes a recent car crash was no accident. On Thursday (June 24), footage of two wrecked vehicles was posted to Twitter and Lanez soon confirmed he’d been a passenger in one of them.
“We almost just died,” the voice on camera says. “We got in a car accident in the fucking Uber. Look at that. Oh my god.”
Lanez later tweeted, “It almost felt like someone knew to crash into us. Strange.”
Tory Lanez likely has a reason to be paranoid. He’s currently facing a felony assault charge for the Megan Thee Stallion shooting incident and has angered many of her fans.
Last October, the L.A. County D.A.’s Office charged Lanez with a felony count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. The Los Angeles Police Department also accused him of inflicting “great bodily injury” on the “Savage” rapper.
But Lanez has maintained his innocence in the matter, going as far as to release the DAYSTAR last September in which he denies shooting Megan on multiple songs throughout the 17-track project. On the album’s opener “Money Over Fallouts,” he sounds shocked she’d ever point the finger at him.
“Can’t cry now, I’m gonna laugh later,” he rapped. “Girl you had the nerve to write that statement on that affidavit, knowing I don’t do it/But I’m coming at my truest, tryin’ to keep this shit 200 with ya, shorty/I can’t prove it but them people in yo’ ear/They the true ones that I feel that really got you thinking Tory Lanez would do you in for real.”
Megan The Stallion scored a small victory in the case in February when a judge handed down a ruling at Los Angeles Superior Court, rejecting a motion from Lanez’s legal team asking for permission to publicly speak on the case. He has yet to go to trial.

Blackalicious Rapper Gift of Gab Dead at 50!
Bay Area rapper Gift of Gab, half of Blackalicious and the performer behind the duo’s iconic tongue- twisting track “Alphabet Aerobics,” has passed away at the age of 50. Born Timothy Jerome Parker, the longtime collaborator of DJ Chief Xcel was reportedly diagnosed with kidney failure in 2014 and received a kidney transplant in January 2020, at the close of Blackalicious’s most recent tour, according to Rolling Stone. “Tim peacefully departed this earth to be with our ancestors on Friday, June 18, 2021,” the Quannum Projects collective, of which Parker was a member, said in a statement on Friday. “He is survived by two brothers, one sister, many nieces and nephews, countless friends, and fans across the globe. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected as we mourn the tremendous loss of our dear brother.”
Known for his rapping agility, delivering extravagantly ornate rhymes and complex wordplay with ease, Gift of Gab released four albums with Chief Xcel as Blackalicious — 1999’s Nia, 2002’s Blazing Arrow, 2005’s The Craft, and 2015’s Imani Vol. 1 — in addition to three solo albums, albums with Quannum MCs and the Mighty Underdogs, and dozens of features. President Biden Officially Makes Pulse Nightclub A National Memorial!
President Joe Biden has signed into law a bill designating Pulse nightclub as a national memorial on Friday.
The bill arrives a little over five years after the deadly massacre claimed the lives of 49 innocent partygoers inside of Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
“Just over five years ago, the Pulse nightclub, a place of acceptance and joy, became a place of unspeakable pain and loss. And we’ll never fully recover but will remember. May no president ever have to sign a monument like this.”
The president was joined at the White House by survivors and loved ones of those who perished, members of the Congressional Equality Caucus, First Lady Jill Biden, and Florida Congress members. Placed behind them were names and pictures of the victims who died.
The bill designating the National Pulse Memorial passed unanimously both in the Senate and the U.S. House.
The Bidens hosted a Pride Month reception in the East Room with church leaders, LGBTQ+ advocates, Congress members, and state and local elected officials after the bill was signed. The event took place in a White House ground-floor hallway illuminated in rainbow hues for the first time as part of a Smithsonian LGBTQ+ exhibit.

In Spears' court hearing, the singer admitted that she almost no control over her life, so it's fair for some to question if she is actually behind her social media posts. Not only did Spears accuse her family of negligence to her health, but she went on to confess that she has been forced into work, "abused” by a previous therapist and that the control extends to her body as she is prohibited from removing an IUD. "I haven’t done anything in the world to deserve this treatment. It’s not OK to force me to do anything I don’t want to do," she declared in her 24-minute address.
Additionally, she detailed how the conservatorship has extended to her own body, admitting that she was not allowed to take her IUD out. "I wanna be able to get married and have a baby," she said. Just days after Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton were rumored to do a Verzuz together, Mary J. Blige is making it clear participating in the hit-for-hit battle isn’t on her to-do list.
As previously reported, rumors swirled that Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton would be doing a Verzuz against each other after a graphic surfaced online.

Kanye West Is Suing Walmart for Selling His Knockoff Yeezys!
On Thursday, West’s Yeezy label filed suit against the retailer for selling deeply discounted knockoffs of its Foam Runners which the suit admits are “virtually indistinguishable.”
Introduced last year at a retail price of $75, the genuine Yeezy slides initially drew unflattering comparisons to Crocs. Nevertheless, they “instantly” sold out, and now sell for upwards of three times that on the secondary market, according to the suit.
The knockoffs on Walmart’s site, meanwhile, have been retailing for between $21.99 and $33.99 a pair. While Yeezy has sent Walmart legal warnings demanding that it yank the ripoff sneakers from its site, it has thus far failed to do so, according to the suit.
“Walmart is flagrantly trading off of his and Yeezy brand’s popularity by offering for sale an imitation version of the Yeezy Foam Runner,” the suit states. It further alleges that the fake versions sold through Walmart’s marketplace platform could potentially leech “hundreds of millions” from Kanye’s billion-dollar label, as well as jeopardizing the “reputation and the goodwill of the Yeezy brand” with “subpar quality.”
“Celebrities are regularly photographed wearing Yeezy clothing and footwear and using Yeezy products, which enhances the brand’s popularity and appeal to the general public,” the complaint adds (h/t Page Six). “Consumers likely would have purchased the Yeezy Foam Runner were it not for the cheaper, knock-off imitation shoe.”
Many of the knockoffs—which are produced by multiple sellers and include unofficial colorways not offered by Yeezy’s exclusive retailer, Adidas—had already been pulled from Walmart’s site. But notably, Page Six reports that other Yeezy-inspired merch, including a counterfeit version of the label’s popular slides, remained for sale as of a search on Thursday afternoon. With regard to the matter, Walmart offered a statement to the outlet, saying: “The product referenced in the complaint is not sold by Walmart, but rather by third party Marketplace sellers. We take allegations like this seriously and are reviewing the claim. We will respond in court as appropriate after we have been served with the complaint.”
Nevertheless, this suit is just the latest round in an escalating battle between the two entities. Only two months ago, West found himself on the receiving end of a suit from Walmart, resulting in a still unresolved logo dispute that in its language echoes the complaint now being made by Yeezy.
“On April 21, the world’s biggest retailer claimed in a filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office that the new ‘rays from a sun’ logo created for the ‘Flashing Lights’ singer’s Yeezy brand is so similar to Walmart’s 13-year-old spark symbol that consumers might confuse them,” Page Six reported in May.
Ciara Encourages Black Women To Be Screened For Cervical Cancer In New Campaign
R&B singer Ciara has partnered with The Black Women’s Health Imperative to encourage African American women to schedule yearly PAP tests. The purpose of the new partnership is to raise awareness about the importance of preventing cervical cancer and offering access to screenings that can make a difference in protecting Black women from unnecessary disease.
“It’s more than a manicure, getting our hair done or a new outfit. Your health comes first, sis. Yes. Schedule routine well-woman exams with the doctors. Stay on top of your health and screen for things like cervical cancer with PAP and HPV testing,” Ciara says in the ad. “Visit bwhi.org to learn more about cervical cancer screening and what questions to ask during your next well-woman visit. I made my appointment. Now you’re served.”
The “Goodies” hitmaker also stopped by “CBS This Morning,” where she revealed why the campaign was so important to her.
“Yeah, actually when I got the offer and opportunity to be a part of this campaign, I felt really close to it because someone in my team actually experienced cervical cancer, and so my heart really went out for this moment, and I said I have to use my platform and raise awareness,” Ciara said. “Especially when I understood that Black women are two times more likely to die from cervical cancer, I was like there’s no way that I’m going to pass with this opportunity, and I’m going to do everything I can to spread the message and ro also show how simple it is to take care of ourselves so absolutely… This is something near and dear and close to my heart.”
Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Lyric Sheet Fetches $150K At Auction!
Prince’s handwritten lyrics to “Nothing Compares 2 U” were recently snatched by a lucky fan at auction for a jaw-dropping amount.
The piece of music history fetched $150,986 at the auction, sold by Boston-based RR Auction. The lyrics were written out in cursive on notebook paper and still have the white console marking tape the singer used to tape them to his microphone while recording, according to TMZ.
The lyric sheet also comes with a detailed letter from Prince’s assistant, Therese Stoulil, on how she obtained them.
“There was a knock on my door, and I looked out the bedroom window and saw a black BMW in my driveway and immediately recognized it as Duane’s, Prince’s half-brother,” Stoulil says. “I went downstairs, opened the door, and he only said ‘this is from Prince’ then he got in his car and left. Once I realized what Duane delivered, I was both stunned and humbled.”
The singer famously wrote “Nothing Compares 2 U” and recorded it with his group “The Family.” It was recorded for their 1985 self-titled album. Prince released his own rendition of the record in 1993.
Most notably, Sinead O’Connor covered the song in 1990, where it became Billboard’s No.1 World Single.
NYPD Arrests Alleged Gang Member For Brazen Bronx Shooting That Put Children At Risk!
The New York Police Department arrested an alleged gang member at his stepfather’s residence in Harlem on Friday in connection to a Bronx shooting that barely missed two children.
CNN reports that Michael Lopez, 27, was arrested on multiple charges related to the shooting, including attempted murder and reckless endangerment. If convicted, Lopez is facing 25 years in prison.
Police are still looking for a second suspect who was seen driving a scooter. At an afternoon press conference on Friday, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark asked for the public’s help in apprehending wanted criminals.
“It took days for the suspect to be apprehended. But what we really needed was for the public to come to us immediately to let us know who the suspect was so that we could get him off the streets as soon as possible,” Clark said.
Lopez has a lengthy criminal history, including five prior arrests. At the time of the shooting, he was already on parole until 2023 from a 2014 attempted murder charge. He has multiple open cases from 2020.
According to NBC New York, the 24-year-old victim was struck in the leg and taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
The children — ages five and 13-years-old — were walking on the sidewalk, just steps from their home, when the shooting took place. They narrowly avoided being struck after the intended target fell on top of them as the gunman opened fire.
The two children were not physically harmed, but their parents say they have been traumatized by the ordeal. Clark said the children are getting assistance.
