Kerry Washington for Entertainment Weekly - Entertainers Of The Year Issue 2020!

Kerry Washington already has the perfect plan for 2021: "I’m really excited about taking a nap." Reflecting on her incredibly busy year — both in front of and behind the camera — one thing her 2020 résumé makes clear is that she hasn’t had time for some good shut-eye in a while.

In November, after finishing up her kids’ schooling for the day, Washington hops on yet another Zoom chat to talk about being an Entertainer of the Year. She’s still wrapping her head around the title. “I thought it was a mistake,” says the 43-year-old New York native. “If you told me I was Homeschool Mom of the Spring, I’d be like, ‘Yes! I worked hard on that curriculum!’” But despite the pandemic, Washington had one of the biggest years of her career. Call her Homeschool Mom of the Spring, Entertainer of the Year, or, as she jokes, “Entertainer of the Apocalypse,” but there’s no denying all that she accomplished, even if some of it was from behind a computer. (What isn’t nowadays?)

The Actor

Washington started the year playing Mia, the outsider to the insular Shaker Heights world in Hulu’s captivating adaptation of the Celeste Ng novel Little Fires Everywhere. (Her work earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series.) And she’ll finish out 2020 as Mrs. Greene, the woman foisting outsider status on someone else, attempting to prevent a gay student from attending the school dance in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix musical The Prom. “I would come to work [on Little Fires] and glue on my nose ring and I’d watch Reese [Witherspoon] in her fancy Brooks Brothers. I was like, ‘Reese, I’m going to get to play you in the next project,’” Washington says with a laugh. “I had to figure out, what’s the Kerry Washington spin on that approach? And then layer it with some singing.” (Yes, you read correctly. She sings!)

"I did so much singing in high school and college and it just hasn't been a part of my professional life so it was really fun to do," says Washington "It's not what I'm best at in life, there are a lot of things on the list that I'm better at than singing, but it brings me so much joy."

The Producer-Director

Through her company, Simpson Street, Washington produced Little Fires and the ACLU documentary The Fight, and won her first Emmy for producing the star-studded variety special Live in Front of a Studio Audience: All in the Family and Good Times. “I was in the first one as an actor, and I just was really hands-on,” Washington says of her involvement with the Norman Lear projects. "I really wanted it to be a huge success and I think because there weren't other women or people of color on the producing team, I was able to offer additional support and insight in the process of getting that first one made. When the second one came around, I was very honored and appreciative that they offered me that role in an official capacity."

Additionally, Washington directed her third episode of television, this one for HBO’s Insecure, which just so happens to be the set where Washington shadowed before helming her first hour of Scandal years ago. "I emailed [creator] Issa [Rae] and asked her if I could shadow at Insecure and I got to shadow Melina [Matsoukas]. which was so fantastic," says Washington. "I fell in love not just with the show but with the behind-the-scenes world of the show."

A couple of years and one more email later, Washington herself was behind the camera.

The Activist

Just saying the word democracy makes Washington sit up a little straighter. Her passion is obvious, so infectious you can feel it through the computer screen. This year alone, she moderated a night of the Democratic National Convention, cohosted the CBS special Every Vote Counts, and hit the campaign trail for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. “I understand that because of what I do for a living, my voice may resonate louder than some others, but my commitment to go out there in the field or to do a special like Every Vote Counts or to host the DNC is to remind people that my voice shouldn't matter more than anybody else's. Because we live in a democracy, every vote matters, every voice matters. I get barraged on social media when people are like, 'Olivia Pope, you have to fix COVID!' In 2016, it was like, 'Olivia Pope, you have to fix this election!' I always want to say to people, Olivia Pope is a pretend character on a TV show, you have so much more power than Olivia Pope. You can have so much more impact than Olivia Pope ever could because you live in this world and we need your voice."

The Storyteller

The connective tissue for Washington’s endeavors is story. It’s hearing about people’s lives on the campaign trail; it’s stepping into the shoes of someone else as an actor; it’s bringing narratives to life as a producer or director. “I really believe that we are each the hero of our own story,” says Washington. "Part of what drives me as a producer or director or actor is this idea that just the mere act of centering myself is a political act in this world because women are marginalized and Black folks are marginalized. All of our stories deserve to be at the center. And wanting people to feel that when they engage with the stuff that Simpson Street makes, they are either, as a marginalized person, they see themselves or their experience in some way, or as a privileged person, they are more aware of the other side. For people to be able to have that experience of seeing themselves and also witnessing others, that's what we're always looking for at Simpson Street. Each person deserves to understand their power to influence the narrative of their life." Each person also deserves a nap every now and then.

#RHOA: Cynthia Bailey Sues Ex-Husband Peter Thomas For $170,000!

"Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Cynthia Bailey is suing her ex-husband Peter Thomas over an allegedly unpaid loan and she wants the court to seize his home.

According to court documents Cynthia filed a lawsuit against Peter in Georgia Court.

In the docs, Cynthia says she loaned Peter $170,000 for the purchase of an Atlanta property. In return, she agreed to hand over all rights and interest in Peter's restaurant Bar One.

Per their deal, Peter agreed to pay back the loan within 36 months.

Cynthia says the 36 months have passed by and she hasn't been paid a dime. The "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star says Peter has taken possession of the property despite failing to repay the loan.

She says in court documents that the, "Defendant has breached the parties Agreement and is in default under the Promissory Note and owes the Plaintiff One Hundred and Seventy Thousand ($170,000.00) Dollars in principal, plus interests from May 27, 2020 until the note is paid."

Cynthia is asking the court for permission to foreclose on Peter's home to collect on the money she is owed. The docs state, "Plaintiff elects to foreclose the Security Deed as a mortgage on the real estate property."

Further, she explains she wants him to cough up extra money for her having to take this to court. She says, "Plaintiff has had to retain legal counsel and incur substantial costs of litigation and requests attorney fees and other costs of collection.

The suit is asking the court to award Cynthia $170,000 plus seize the home from Peter immediately. Peter has yet to respond to the lawsuit. Cynthia informed the court they can serve him with the legal papers at his bar in North Carolina.

Back in 2017, Cynthia and Peter finalized their nasty divorce after years of being together. He faced allegations of infidelity for some time. Prior to their marriage, they signed a prenuptial agreement that determined who got what in the event of a split.

According to divorce documents, Cynthia was awarded her impressive collection of properties, including three homes in Georgia and one in Texas. She also got her Land Rover and Pontiac Montana.

Peter was able to keep his member interest in two restaurants, and his own company.

Earlier this year, Cynthia got remarried when she walked down the aisle with long-time fiancΓ© Mike Hill. She looked incredibly happy while celebrating with her "Real Housewives of Atlanta" costars. However, her bachelorette party is where the real fun went down.

Keke Palmer Just Opened Up About PCOS, Acne In No-Makeup Instagram Photo!

Keke Palmer, 27, is not afraid to show herself to the world. Whether it's addressing systemic racism or personal health concerns and acne, she's used her platform to spread the word. She took to Instagram to share her struggles with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in a lengthy caption and three unfiltered, no-makeup photos.

Keke starts with a disclaimer: "Hey you guys, for some of you this may be TMI, but for me my platform has always been used for things much greater than me. Poly Cystic Ovarian syndrome has been attacking me from the inside out my entire life and I had no idea."

The actress shared up-close, no-makeup selfies to reveal acne and scarring on her cheeks. There were no filters in her caption, or on the photos.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder in which levels of reproductive hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are imbalanced. It can trigger a wide range of symptoms, including (but not limited to) irregular periods, migraines, facial hair growth, weight gain, insulin resistance, painful periods, ovarian cysts, and fertility problems. PCOS affects as many as one in 10 women, and is the leading cause of infertility in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Keke went on to detail her visible symptoms and severe acne. "My acne has been so bad that people in my field offered to pay for me to get it fixed. I tried EVERYTHING. I did Accutane TWICE. People say drink water, have a better diet, but I did all that, I ate all the 'right' things, my blood tests were fine. But it took ME taking a personal look into my family that has a history of diabetes and obesity, to understand what was ACTUALLY happening with me. And unfortunately doctors are people and if you don’t 'look the part' they may not think that’s your problem. They may not even suggest it if you 'look healthy' whatever that means! I came to a doctor in tears once and all they offered was a measles vaccine... Exactly."

She continued with an empowering message: "I’m posting this to say that it’s okay and we can help ourselves. My skin has made me sad many nights but I do not give up on myself. I know this is not me and my body has been looking for help. I do not have a medical degree but I did the research and took what I learned to a doctor and that led them to a proper diagnosis. I’m not saying trust web md for everything haha but what I am saying is no one can help us like we can help ourselves."

This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Keke says it's not only the current physical symptoms that hurt. "This especially makes me sad because my family struggled for years and no doctor could help them, they actually mislead them and just took their money. It’s only because of what my family sacrificed that allows me to even have the resources to share the information I’m sharing with you! Their fight out of poverty gave me a better life and I just want to share what I learn πŸ™πŸΎ"

But, none of the symptoms are slowing her down. "The least harmful thing PCOS can bring is acne. To all the people struggling with this please know you’re not alone and that you are still so fucking fine! MY ACNE AINT NEVER STOPPED ME. But we don’t have accept this. Now I can really help KEKE! And I love her so it’s ON."

Keke ended on an encouraging note: "Pray for me on this journey and I will pray for you too. I’m not afraid to show myself to the world and you shouldn’t be either ❤️"

Ryan Murphy spent six months building Broadway set for ‘The Prom’!

Director Ryan Murphy spent six months painstakingly recreating part of New York’s theater district in Los Angeles — because Big Apple officials wouldn’t let him shoot on Broadway.

The Hollywood power player said that for his new film adaptation of the musical “The Prom” — about two lesbian students who want to be able to attend their high school dance — he applied for permits to shut down eight blocks around Times Square for three nights.

“We were promptly denied,” he said during a charity preview of the Netflix film.

“We found a four-acre abandoned lot in downtown LA and we went to Broadway and we measured the curbs and the length of the curb to the street and how many bulbs are on the marquee,” Murphy explained. “We spent six months building Broadway.”

The movie stars James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep taking over the role originated on stage by Beth Leavel. Leavel will coincidentally take over Streep’s role as Miranda Priestly in the upcoming “The Devil Wears Prada” musical.

Organizers of the screening asked for donations for Actor’s Fund and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The movie starts streaming Dec. 11.

Rapper Casanova Wanted By FBI; Another Alleged Gang Member Charged With Teen's Death In NY!

Prosecutors charged 18 alleged members of the Untouchable Gorilla Stone Nation Gang in connection with various racketeering, murder, narcotics, firearms and fraud offenses, officials said.

All but one of the alleged members were in custody as of Tuesday; rapper Casanova was still being sought by the FBI. Officials said he's believed to be in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Officials charged Brandon Soto in connection with the Sept. 21 murder of a 15-year-old minor in Poughkeepsie. The accused individuals also allegedly defrauded COVID-19 economic assistance programs, Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said.

"Because of that, communities across the Southern District – from Poughkeepsie to Peekskill to New York City – suffered," Strauss said.

The alleged crimes span a wide swath of New York: on June 12, Naya Austin, Dezon Washington and Jordan Ingram allegedly robbed a rival drug dealer at gunpoint in Peekskill; on July 20, Stephen Hugh allegedly shot at rival gang members in New Rochelle and on Aug. 28 of 2018, Brinae Thornton allegedly shot at a rival gang member in Brooklyn.

Obama Admits To 'Screwup' For Not Giving Dolly Parton The Medal Of Freedom!

Obama Admits To 'Screwup' For Not Giving Dolly Parton The Medal Of Freedom

Former President Barack Obama says his administration made a major mistake in failing to honor country music icon, Dolly Parton, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On Monday (November 30), during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his new memoir, Obama was asked how it was possible that Parton had not been honored with America's highest civilian award.

"That's a mistake," Obama said. "I'm shocked."

"Looking back at your eight years, do you realize that the mistake you made?" Colbert asked with a laugh.

"Actually, that was a screwup," Obama replied. "I'm surprised. I think I assumed that she had already gotten one, and that was incorrect."

He added, "She deserves one. I'll call Biden."

The Medal of Freedom is bestowed by the president "to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

Over the course of his presidency, Obama bestowed the Medal of Freedom on dozens of and public figures and musicians including Barbra Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Loretta Lynn and more.

Parton, who has earned two Grammy Awards and 25 number one singles throughout her career, made news last month because of her $1 million donation to help fund the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. The "Jolene" singer was previously honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2005 and Kennedy Center Honors in 2006— but no Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Indiana Attorney General Argues That Gay Parents Shouldn’t Be Listed On Child’s Birth Certificates!

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill has made clear that he is opposed to gay parents being listed on birth certificates.

Hill is proposing that the Supreme Court reverses an appeals court decision that allows same-sex couples to appear on a child’s birth certificate.

USA Today reports that the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals made a decision in January that affirmed that it was unconstitutional to prevent same-sex parents from having legal ownership of their children. AG Hill filed a petition in June to counter the ruling.

The decision to list both individuals in a same-sex union on the birth certificate stems from a 2015 case involving Ashlee and Ruby Henderson, a gay married couple from Lafayette, Indiana.

Ruby conceived their child through artificial insemination, but when officials refused to name both women as parents on the birth certificate, the Hendersons sued Indiana’s health commissioner and various officials in Tippecanoe County. In 2016, they won their initial case, and seven other couples ultimately joined the suit as plaintiffs after Indiana appealed up to the 7th Circuit.

According to Indiana law, “a husband is presumed to be a child’s biological father so that both spouses are listed as parents on the birth certificate, and the child is deemed to be born in wedlock.”

“There’s no similar presumption with respect to an all-female married couple—or for that matter an all-male married couple,” wrote the judges. They added that both Ashlee and Ruby should be listed as parents on their child’s birth certificate to prevent any confusion, financial strain, and discrimination.

But Hill disagrees. He argues, “A birth mother’s wife will never be the biological father of the child, meaning that, whenever a birth-mother’s wife gains presumptive ‘parentage’ status, a biological father’s rights and obligations to the child have necessarily been undermined without proper adjudication.”

Hendersons’ attorney, Karen Celestino-Horseman, told NBC that Hill’s petition will be discussed during a Dec. 11 conference.

Celestino-Horseman said, “We are hopeful the court will follow the precedent in ‘Pavan,'” referring to the high court’s 2017 ruling in the Pavan v. Smith case out of Arkansas. The case was centered on a married couple who conceived through artificial insemination. The Supreme Court ruled that the “constellation of benefits that the States have linked to marriage” extends to same-sex parents being listed on the birth certificate, the report states.

The Bachelorette’s Eazy Reportedly Investigated After Sexual Assault Claims!

Right as The Bachelorette was kicking off season 16 in October, contestant Uzoma “Eazy” Nwachukwu, a former NFL player and sports marketing agent, was accused of sexual assault.

Now, however, Heavy reports that ABC’s investigation into the allegations has been ruled “inconclusive.” ABC did not respond to Refinery29's request for comment by the time of publication.

During the Bachelorette premiere, Nwachukwu introduced himself to Clare Crawley running through a giant sign that read "your future husband," a nod to his high school football playing days. Immediately, host Chris Harrison noted that the funnyman would become a "fan favorite." However, an unidentified woman revealed soon after in a thread of since-deleted tweets (at the recommendation of her lawyers) that she had a non-consensual sexual encounter with Nwachukwu. “I will not stand by quietly anymore, while this aggressor is paraded around on this show as a ‘stand up guy’ or as the ‘comic,'” she wrote.

At the time, longtime Bachelor Nation insider Reality Steve (aka Stephen Carbone) said that he had talked to the Nwachukwu's accuser privately and assumed that the contestant would be booted from any future Bachelor franchises. "Take a good look at Eazy because I don't think you'll be seeing him in this franchise ever again," he wrote in his October 14 episode recap. "Some serious allegations against him arose on social media last night. I spoke with the woman involved. Not good, I'll leave it at that."

According to the blogger, the woman had spoken with NZK Productions's legal team, who had in turn met with Nwachukwu, "so now the show is 100% aware of allegations against him.” The accuser told Heavy that there was a lot of back and forth ("it’s he said, she said”). "I told them I spoke my truth so I can no longer carry guilt, if something happens from here, it’s not on me, it’s on them,” she said.

Those who watch the show will notice that Nwachukwu is still very much present (it was filmed this past summer), but it seems that his interactions with Crawley and Tayshia Adams (who replaced Crawley halfway through the season) have been largely cut out. This week, however, previews for the December 2 episode show that Nwachukwu will have a one-on-one date with Adams, and reveal that he's falling in love with her.

Right now there are a dozen men left, but if the numbers start to dwindle and Nwachukwu is kept around, the producers might find themselves in even more hot water. As as for a stint in the next installment of Bachelor In Paradise? "Inconclusive" investigation or not, we're sure Bachelor Nation has other options.
