The Daily Buzz For March 11 ☕πŸ“°☕

Constance Wu Ava DuVernay and Jessica Chastain for Marie Claire US - April 2019
Ava DuVernay, Jessica Chastain, and Constance Wu cover the “Change Makers” April 2019 issue of Marie Claire magazine photographed by Amanda Demme.

Ava DuVernay
On honoring her craft before fame: “I didn’t have dreams or designs that a studio would want to make my work, that any awards body or critical community would embrace my work. In many ways, that lack of attention put me in a really good place. No one’s going to watch it anyway, so I may as well make what I want.”

On looking to the past to move forward: “Whenever we get depressed or down, we need to look to history and realize that while it feels very alarming and uncharted, the kind of straight up racism that we hear now is not new.”

On why forgoing her writers credit for Selma was her biggest regret: “It was my biggest career mistake so far. I allowed someone to put their name on my work. I hate it every day, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to let it go, but it definitely taught me some lessons I intend to benefit from.”

Jessica Chastain
On criticism for being outspoken: “I’ve had people tell me, ‘You need to be a little more quiet with all this woman talk.’”

On female directors receiving less opportunity than male directors: “I agree there are not as many women as men that have the same experience, but that’s because, in the past, women have been actively discriminated against. Male directors who had their first film in Sundance, their next offer is a huge action movie. Women haven’ been given those opportunities, and we need to ask why.”

On regret for not standing up for herself after a male executive flirted with her: “For months, I tried to make it light, laugh it off. Now I wish I had just told him to fuck off.”

Constance Wu
On defining diversity: “Diversity isn’t just ‘Let’s have people of color supporting this white person’s story.’”

On competition among actresses: “People say women are inherently bitchy and competitive. But anybody will be competitive if there’s only one seat at the table.”

On creating lasting change: “The only way things get better is to demand that instead of us changing for the sake of how the culture has always been, let’s change the culture.”

Issue is on stands now.

#RHOA: Oh Really? NeNe Leakes has Unfollowed Most of Her Atlanta Housewives Costars After Season 11!
By the looks of NeNe Leakes’ “following” section on Instagram, the taping of the Real Housewives of Atlanta season 11 reunion on Thursday, February 7, did not go well.
The OG Housewife, 51, seemingly unfollowed five of her seven castmates on the social media app: full-time Housewives Kandi Burruss, Porsha Williams, Cynthia Bailey and Eva Marcille, as well as Friend of the Housewives Tanya Sam. NeNe still follows longtime pal Marlo Hampton and newcomer Shamari DeVoe.

Earlier in the day, the Glee alum teased fans about the upcoming reunion, which is slated to air in three parts starting on Sunday, March 24. “I’m in the house!” she captioned a photo on Instagram of her black pumps, which were adorned with three gold watch bands. “Bring it….RHOA Reunion season 11 #OG #Threat #headbitchincharge #watchoutheels.”

#Empire: The cast and crew are divided over Jussie drama!
The “Empire” set has been left deeply divided by the Jussie Smollett scandal, we’re told, between people who continue to support the embattled actor despite his arrest, and people who are furious with him.
Sources say the cast has been broadly more supportive of him, while the crew has been broadly more critical.

The schism on the Chicago set was brought to the fore in recent days, we’re told, when a well-wishes card was passed around for Smollett, who was charged on Feb. 20 for allegedly staging a hoax hate crime against himself.

The Tea is some people signed the card, but many refused. “Some of the cast wanted to send him a message, like a ‘We’re thinking of you’ thing, and asked people to sign it,” said a source, “but a lot of people were disgusted. The hair and makeup people, a lot of the crew.”

Smollett returned to work on the Fox show just hours after posting bail on Feb. 21.
Despite the fact that the Chicago Police Department gave a news conference detailing exactly how they believe Smollett put the scheme together, he still has supporters.

On Tuesday, Queen Latifah — who has appeared on “Empire” — told Yahoo of Smollett, “The guy I’ve seen has always been someone who cares about people, who cares about others, and who’s very kind and who’s always been cool and sweet,” adding, “So until I can see some definitive proof — which I haven’t seen yet — then, you know, I gotta go with him until I see otherwise.”

Apparently, people on the set feel similarly. Well whatever get ready for the new season of Empire ths week on FOX!

#HipHopNews: Nicki Minaj Cancels Show, Fans Start Chanting “Cardi B”
Nicki Minaj's European tour hit another snag Saturday night (March 9) in Bordeaux, France when her show was canceled right before it was set to start. The news had some fans who were in attendance so pissed off they started chanting "Cardi B" as they walked toward the exits.

Nicki is about midway through her Wrld Tour with Juice Wrld. But last night's show ended up being another let down for reasons beyond the Queen rapper's control. Apparently, the venue was not able to power Nicki's extensive set so the show was shut down at the last minute. Video has surfaced of the crowd's reaction to being notified of the cancellation. Many people are pissed, with some throwing up middle fingers to the stage. As they begin to filter to the exit, a large crowd of people start to chant the name of Nicki's perceived nemesis Cardi B, in an obvious attempt to spite the Young Money rapper for not performing.

Nicki hopped on Twitter and Instagram to address the show not happening. "Why would an artist cancel a show & lose money? What for?" she questioned on Twitter. "When they’re already in the building, dressed, etc. The artist is just as mad as the fans when a show can’t go on. I love seeing my fans. Nothing can stop me. B4 the show, juice WRLD & I are just as excited as u guys are."

Not all of Nicki's fans were pissed. Some stayed behind to cheer on the rapper. This is the second time one of Nicki's shows has been canceled because of technical issues. In February, she was forced to cancel a stop in Munich, Germany because of a similar problem.

Congrats! Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are engaged!
Jennifer Lopez and retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez are engaged after two years of dating.
The two celebs, who often document their relationship milestones on social media, took to Instagram on Saturday night to share the news.

“She said yes,” Rodriguez said in a post showing JLo’s hand, now bearing a huge engagement ring.
The actress and singer shared the same post with a simpler message.

The pair officially celebrated their two-year anniversary on Feb. 4, and the former Seattle Mariner, Texas Ranger and New York Yankee shared a heartfelt message to his now-fiancΓ©e.

“Only 730 days, which have flown by, but it feels like we have been together forever. We are meant to be, and how much you mean to me cannot be put into words,” A-Rod wrote at the time.
The engagement comes just a day after Rodriguez posted a message on his Instagram Story about soulmates, perhaps hinting at Saturday’s announcement.
“A soulmate isn’t someone who completes you. No, a soulmate is someone who inspires you to complete yourself. A soulmate is someone who loves you with so much conviction, and so much heart, that it is nearly impossible to doubt just how capable you are of becoming exactly who you have always wanted to be," the message read.

Lopez and A-Rod first met at Shea Stadium in Queens back in 2005, when she stopped to shake the athlete's hand before the first pitch, People reported.
Lopez is best known for musical hits including “Jenny From The Block,” “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” and “Waiting for Tonight.”

Rodriguez played 22 seasons in the big leagues and retired with the Yankees in 2016.

#BoxOfficeNews: Captain Marvel SHATTERS the Box Office with a take of $153M!
Disney's release of Marvel Studios's Captain Marvel gave the domestic box office a much needed jolt after the first two months of the year struggled to compete with 2018. The twenty-first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered the franchise's seventh largest opening weekend of all time while grossing more over its first three days than the combined totals of any previous three-day weekend so far this year.

With an estimated $153 million, Captain Marvel proved a massive success, bringing in the third highest March opening of all-time, and don't be surprised to see actuals push the film's total a bit higher come Monday afternoon. Historically, the performance ranks among openings that include The Dark Knight ($158.4m opening), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158m opening), Rogue One ($155m opening) and The Hunger Games ($152.5m opening), the four of which representing a total domestic gross ranging from $408-530+ million.

On average, the 20 previous releases in the MCU delivered a 2.76x multiplier, which would suggest Captain Marvel's run would finish around $422 million based on the film's domestic opening weekend. That said, should it manage to top Iron Man 3's $409 million domestic run it would rank as the fifth largest film in the MCU and, in terms of genre competition, it has a few weeks all to itself before WB's Shazam! opens on April 5.

It is interesting to note exits, which show the film playing to an opening weekend crowd that was 55% male and 45% female, which, along with Black Panther and Ant-Man and the Wasp, is the smallest gender divide among films in the MCU, but nowhere near the 52% female crowd Wonder Woman played to back in June 2017. Additionally, 64% of the film's opening weekend crowd was aged 25 or older, which ranks as one of the older audiences for an MCU film, while it earned an "A" CinemaScore.

Internationally, Captain Marvel delivered an estimated $302 million, making it the fifth highest international opening weekend of all-time and the sixth largest worldwide debut ever. Leading the way was the film's opening in China, which is estimated at $89.3 million, which ranks as the third largest MCU opening weekend ever in the market behind Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. Behind China is South Korea with a $24.1 million debut followed by the UK ($16.8m), Brazil ($13.4m), Mexico ($12.8m), Australia ($10.7m), Indonesia ($10.1m), Russia ($9.8m), France ($9.2m), Germany ($7.8m), India ($6.9m), Thailand ($6.6m), Taiwan ($6.4m), Philippines ($6.3m), Malaysia ($5.6m), Italy ($5.5m) and Hong Kong ($5.2m). Next weekend the film will open in Japan serving as the only market where the film has yet to be released.

“People think that I’m some kind of monster. I’m here to remove all the doubt. My lawyer was telling me no, but my ego, my ego, was telling me yes,” Kenan said.

“I’m not the devil, and even if I was, you can’t say one nice thing about the devil?”

Whoopi Goldberg Talks Why She Nearly Died From Pneumonia
Recently, Whoopi Goldberg has been out of The View and out of view in general. This prompted some conspiracy theories on social media.
Whoopi Goldberg's absence from The View (she's sick, they say) since the day after they announced her as an Oscar presenter+the fact that she's the only previous Oscar host listed as a presenter+she openly said on The View in January that she'd be up for hosting=???

Yes, the 63-year-old said that she had “pneumonia in both lungs, which meant there was fluid and there was all kinds of stuff going on.” Oh, and the "I came very, very close to leaving the earth" was not good, because she wasn't talking about boarding the next Space X rocket.

Pneumonia occurs when your lungs get infected with bacteria, viruses, or some other type of microorganism and subsequently become inflamed and filled with fluid. This can make it difficult for your lungs to do their job: provide oxygen to your blood and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. According to the American Thoracic Society, pneumonia is the most common reason why adults in the U.S. have to be admitted to hospital besides giving birth with about a million admissions occurring each year. Pneumonia claims the lives of around 50,000 adults annually. While the advent of antibiotics helped significantly improve survival for those with pneumonia, things have not really gotten that much better over the past several decades. In fact the American Thoracic Society says, "We are not yet winning the battle against pneumonia." That's a grim reality.

In fact, pneumonia causes about half of all episodes of sepsis and septic shock. Sepsis is bad news. It occurs when your immune system is trying to fight an infection but things go haywire. The chemical reactions in your body proceed down the wrong pathways and begin doing serious damage to your body and multiple organs, pushing them to the point of failure. Your blood pressure may drop to dangerous levels, you may have even more difficulty breathing, your kidneys may stop excreting urine, you may become disoriented, and your liver can fail.

Prayers for her as she continues to recover!

Justin Bieber Revealed He's Been "Struggling" Lately & Asked Fans For Support
In an Instagram posted on Sunday, Mar. 10, Justin Bieber opened up about how he's "struggling," and asked fans for their prayers and support. The "Never Say Never" singer didn't go into detail about his current situation, but his candid comments should be commended. By sharing that things are complicated for him right now, Bieber's joining a growing number of celebrities who are getting real with their fans about how their lives aren't always perfect.
Bieber captioned the photo, "Just wanted to keep you guys updated a little bit hopefully what I’m going through will resonate with you guys. Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird.. I always bounce back so I'm not worried just wanted to reach out and ask for your guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks .. the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on.."

The singer's post is receiving lots of love from his fans and fellow celebrities alike. Patrick Schwarzenegger commented, "LOVE YOU!" accompanied by two praying hands emojis. Tahj Mowry added, "Keep lookin up! HES (sic) got you." And William Baldwin, the uncle of his wife Hailey, wrote, "Sending healing light, strength, and prayers, prayers, prayers... You are loved JB."
His fans are also showing the singer an outpouring of support. One Instagram user wrote, "You are the light of many people, never forget that, you have been with us for so many years. You have helped so many of us find peace and I hope with all my heart that you will find yours because it is what you deserve after what you have gone through. I pray that everything will be better for you, that you will be happy and healthy the rest of your life. God bless you." Another fan added, "Love you for your honesty and vulnerability... thank you for speaking up about real issues like depression and anxiety!! We all go through seasons and they always to lead to the best times ahead."

This isn't the first time that Bieber has talked about a feeling of disconnect, or opened up about personal struggles. In July 2017, Bieber announced the cancellation of the last leg of his Purpose world tour due to "unforeseen circumstances," per People. Almost two years later, in his Feb. 2019 cover interview with Vogue along with wife Hailey Bieber, he admitted that depression played a big role in the tour's premature ending.
"I got really depressed on tour," he told the publication. "I haven't talked about this, and I'm still processing so much stuff that I haven't talked about. I was lonely. I needed some time."
He went on to say that he had lost touch with himself as a musician and needed to step back and regroup. After all, he's been completely submerged in the music industry since he was a young kid. "Just thinking about music stresses me out," he said. "I’ve been successful since I was 13, so I didn't really have a chance to find who I was apart from what I did. I just needed some time to evaluate myself: who I am, what I want out of my life, my relationships, who I want to be — stuff that when you're so immersed in the music business you kind of lose sight of."

Bieber's transparency serves as a reminder that everyone endures struggles, and everyone deserves the necessary patience and grace they need to get back on their feet. The singer's under no obligation to share his journey with fans, but by doing so, it seems he's helping some of his followers feel less alone. And as the comments on his post illustrate, he's receiving extra support from his fans, friends, and family while he goes through this challenging period of his life.

A Arizona Woman Attacked By a Black Jaguar After Crossing Barrier To Take A Selfie
An Arizona woman was attacked by a jaguar at the Wildlife World Zoo in Litchfield Park after crossing over the barrier to get a photo, leaving her with injuries that required medical attention. Fire department officials say the woman was trying to take a selfie near the fence of the jaguar enclosure when the animal reached out and attacked her arm.

The zoo tweeted the woman was attacked by a female jaguar and cited witness accounts. “The visitor sustained non-life threatening injuries to their arm from one of our female jaguars. At the request of the family, paramedics were called. At no time was the animal out of its enclosure … please understand why barriers are put in place. Sending prayers to the family tonight.”

One witness, Adam Wilkerson, said he was at the zoo with his family when someone came running around the corner yelling for help.
“Without thinking, I had no idea what I was going to see, I just ran over there. I saw the other girl up against the fence with her arm caught in the jaguar’s claws.” Wilkerson said he was standing behind the woman, but didn’t want to pull her off. He said, “I could see the claws in her actual flesh.”

In an effort to distract the jaguar, Wilkerson said, his mother shoved a water bottle through the cage. The bottle caught the jaguar’s attention and it let go of the victim. “When my mom put the water bottle through the gate, the jaguar let go of the girl. And we pulled the girl back and she collapsed,” he said.

The unidentified victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. There were reportedly no employees nearby during the incident.

Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods Reunite After Tristan Thompson Drama
Many have been speculating whether or not there’s hope for Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods’ friendship.
According to E! News, an eyewitness spotted the two out for breakfast early Friday morning at the Calabasas restaurant, Pedalers Fork.
“It seemed very casual, and they both were having a discussion together while eating,” according to the eyewitness.

This is the first time the two have been spotted together since Jordyn Woods and Tristan Thompson shared a kiss on Valentine’s Day weekend.

After news broke about Woods and Thompson, Jordyn moved out of Kylie’s Calabasas guest home, where she lived for over a year.
Woods then appeared on Jada Pinkett’s “Red Table Talk,” where she stated that the two were still in contact.
As for the Kardashian Klan, they have all unfollowed Jordyn Woods and expressed their hurt through subliminal messages, tweets, and car karaoke.

I guess only time will tell whether their friendship will be like it used to be.
