The Daily Buzz For Jan 23 ☕๐Ÿ“ฐ☕

Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay and Storm Reid Cover the February Issue of Essence Magazine
OPRAH:
ON WATCHING STORM ON SET: “Sometimes I’d be watching her on set and would really tear up at her performance because she will become for this generation what Judy Garland’s Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz was for previous generations. She gets to be that. This little Stormy, our little Stormy, gets to carry that on for generations to come. She gets to be that light for girls like herself…”

AVA:
ON BEING APPROACHED TO DIRECT THE FILM: “I read it, and of course, as any reader, you put yourself in the book. You see people that you know inhabiting the world. So when I went in to talk to [Walt Disney Studios EVP of Production Tendo Nagenda] about it, I said, ‘This is how I see it. I see this as being multicultural, even down to the main character. I’m like, ‘She’s gotta be brown…’”

STORM:
ON HER FIRST LEADING ROLE: “This is a huge milestone in my career, to be in a movie with Ava DuVernay directing and Miss Oprah being in it. When I think about it, I don’t really know how to feel. There are so many emotions. But it’s just a great blessing that will forever change my life…”

#RHoA: Kandi Burruss Debuts Riley’s Pink Hair. Do you like it?
Fans, who watched Sunday’s episode of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, saw 15-year-old Riley Burruss announce to her mother that she wants to learn how to drive immediately.
Kandi took to social media where she posted some lovely photos of Riley with pink hair and fans are commenting on what made her cry.

Kandi wrote: “My baby Riley is in tonight’s episode of RHOA. Tune in if you’re not already! RHOA.I love this girl! @rileyburruss heads back to Atl tomorrow, but she’s already planning her next trip. She’s kinda feeling this #NYClife!”

One fan responded by: “Hello Riley you are a beautiful young girl, I love the pink. Just watched tonight’s episode. I broke down crying for little Riley; I love your relationship. You have stayed pretty neutral while being incredibly loving and supportive of Riley. This episode is emotional, I’m 34 years old and still feel this kind of sadness when I think about my biological father and his family. Healing hugs!”
Another shared: “She is beautiful! Yes, Riley rocking that hair. Riley seems like such a sweet girl!!!! So genuine!! Kandi I wanted to cry with her she probably hurt because her dad is in his new baby’s life and he’s missed so much of her life. That reminds me of my daughter,” claimed another woman.
After one person said they disapprove of the hair color, a pro-Riley commenter came out swinging: “Why does it really matter to you, lol? I’m sure you don’t know Kandi nor Riley, and I’m sure Kandi don’t care about how you feel how Riley’s hair especially from strangers such as yourself. Anyway.I think at her age she can wear these type of colors so sthu.”

Do you like the new fun hair?

They’re here! Oscar Nominations 2018: See the Full List!
The Shape of Water leads with 13 nominations—but the announcement had surprises in store as well (hello, Get Out and Mudbound!).

And the nominees are . . . Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, mostly, which stormed the Oscar nominations Tuesday morning by snagging a staggering 13 nods, one shy of tying the record for most nominations shared by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. But while that film’s dominance was largely expected, the announcement also had several surprises in store—chiefly, the strong performance of Mudbound, a Netflix film that has been largely shut out of early awards predictors.

Dee Rees’s period piece walked away with five nominations, including nods for its screenplay, cinematography, and supporting actress Mary J. Blige (who was also cited in the original-song category). Likewise, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, an early favorite whose momentum seemed to be flagging, came back strong with four nods, including best picture, director, and a surprise nomination for Daniel Kaluuya’s lead performance.

Hmmmmm, So Diddy Ready for Kids with Cassie?
Business mogul and father of five, Sean 'Diddy' Combs aka Brother Love, admits he would like to have children with his longtime girlfriend Cassie Ventura...

Last week Diddy told The Breakfast Club,
“Without a doubt, I love children. I could go to eight without a problem. Can’t stop, won’t stop. Whatever is supposed to happen in the future is going to happen, but that’s something that I want.”
“I would only do it with my girl [Cassie], of course.”
Diddy also gave advice on how he handles his baby mamas,
“You have to start to treat your family like a tribe if you have other mothers of your children. The separatism starts to wear on the family as a whole. We all in it together. So, we might as well figure out how to co-exist, and they get along lovely.Laughing and talking and partying and dancing and chilling and shopping. Everything is good because they’re good people.”

“And Cassie’s a great woman. It wasn’t anyone versus anybody. It was just about honesty and making sure everybody’s clear. There were no problems because everybody’s very respectful as women. Just as themselves, they’re not really into fighting or beefing.”
In case you forgot  Diddy has five kids and three baby mamas: Misa Hylton [Justin Combs], Kim Porter [Christian, Jesse and Delilah Combs] and Sarah Chapman [Chance Combs]

Neil Diamond announces Parkinson's diagnosis, immediate retirement
Neil Diamond has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, the singer revealed on his website Monday.
The legendary musician will be retiring, and has canceled the third leg of this 50th Anniversary tour.
“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” said Diamond in a statement, apologizing to those who had purchased tickets to upcoming shows.

The tour was set to extend to Australia and New Zealand this March, but the musician's website stated that "the onset of the disease has made it difficult to travel and perform on a large scale basis." Tickets purchased will be refunded.

Diamond will turn 77 on Wednesday, and the Recording Academy will honor him with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys on Sunday.

Fans got to see him perform last month on Fox's New Year’s Eve With Steve Harvey: Live From Times Square.
Diamond’s 50th Anniversary tour launched last April and carried on for over 50 dates across the U.S. and Europe. Diamond took just a month off between the two tour legs, and wrapped on Oct. 19 in London.

At a tour stop in Nashville last April, the singer's famous baritone was a "little grittier" wrote The Tennessean, "but at points, it was hard to tell a difference between the voice echoing through Bridgestone Arena and the one put to tape in the '70s."

"I spent eight years trying to get my music heard," Diamond said on stage at the time, recalling his start on Tin Pan Alley in New York City. "And when I finally got it heard, a whole world opened up."

On Monday, Diamond said he plans "to remain active in writing, recording and other projects for a long time to come."

He closed his statement by thanking his fans.
"My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world," he said. "You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement." And with a nod to his famous song Sweet Caroline, he added,  "This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you.”

Jared Fogle Loses Bid for Early Prison Release
Judge shoots down disgraced former Subway pitchman’s argument
Disgraced former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle has lost a bid to be released from prison, where he is currently serving more than 15 years for conspiracy to receive child pornography and traveling to have sex with a minor.

Fogle filed papers earlier this month, seeking an order for his immediate release. The former Subway figurehead contended, among other things, that there were jurisdictional issues in the case against him.

However, in an order issued Friday, federal judge Tanya Walton Pratt shot down Fogle’s bid.
“Fogle again challenges the Court’s subject matter jurisdiction over him and requests immediate release from detention,” Pratt’s order reads. “The Motion, Notices and Objections are all DENIED.”
According to court papers obtained by TheWrap at the time, Fogle agreed in 2015 to plead guilty to “distributing and receiving visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct” and traveling “in interstate commerce to engage in unlawful commercial sexual acts with minors, and attempted to do so.”

Fogle came under suspicion after the May 2015 arrest of Russell Taylor, then-executive director of Fogle’s charity, The Jared Foundation.
Court documents stated that Fogle received multiple images of minors engaged in sex acts from Taylor and knew that those depicted were under 18. Taylor was accused of filming the minors without their knowledge using a series of hidden cameras in his home. Some of those depicted were reportedly as young as six years old.

Fogle was also accused of traveling multiple times to New York with the purpose of engaging in a sex act with a minor.

U.S. Congress approves bill to end gov't shutdown

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 -- The U.S. Congress on Monday approved a stopgap spending bill to end a three-day government shutdown, sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature.

By a vote of 266-150, the House of Representatives approved the bill to reopen the federal government and extend funding through Feb. 8, hours after the Senate cleared the legislation.

Trump is expected to sign the bill Monday evening, allowing the government to completely reopen on Tuesday.
The current government funding expired midnight on Friday as the Senate failed to advance a stopgap spending bill, which had passed the House of Representatives and would fund the government through Feb. 16.

Democrats had hoped that they could use the government spending as leverage to pass an immigration bill, while Republicans and the Trump administration insisted that they would not negotiate on immigration until Democrats give them enough votes to reopen the government.

The impasse broke after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic leader Chuck Schumer reached a deal over immigration Monday morning. McConnell assured that the Senate will take up an immigration bill next month to consider protections for young immigrants brought to the United States as children, known as "Dreamers."
"After several discussions, offers and counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement. We will vote today to reopen the government to continue negotiating a global agreement," Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Trump said Monday in a statement that his administration will work towards "solving the problem of very unfair, illegal immigration" once the government is funded.

"We will make a long-term deal on immigration if and only if it's good for our country," he said.

The three-day shutdown, the first since 2013, cast a shadow over the first anniversary of Trump's presidential inauguration on Saturday and forced him to cancel a planned weekend trip to his Mar-a-Lago resort in the state of Florida.

But Trump still plans to travel to Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum (WEF) this week if the government reopens as expected, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said earlier on Monday.

"If all things go as expected this afternoon with the reopening of the government, which we expect that they will, the president's delegation will leave tomorrow and the president will continue on his trip later in the week," Sanders said at a regular press briefing.
