Nicolas Ghesquière departing from Balenciaga. Kanye West to hand in resume!
A look from spring 2013, Nicolas Ghesquière’s last collection for Balenciaga. In a surprise move, Nicolas Ghesquière is parting ways with Balenciaga, the Paris house he transformed into a modern luxury brand with a following for its clothing and accessories. A company announcement Monday morning said the decision for him to leave Balenciaga after 15 years as creative director was made jointly by Mr. Ghesquière and PPR, which owns the label. A spokesman for Balenciaga, Lionel Vermeil, had no additional information.
The news is surprising because it was thought that PPR executives were happy with Balenciaga’s performance in recent years and with the kudos Mr. Ghesquière has received for his often electrifying runway collections. PPR’s founder, the art patron François-Henri Pinault, was seen backstage in September at the spring 2013 show. The number of Balenciaga stores has grown to 62, with a concerted effort in Asia. In the news release, Mr. Pinault praised Mr. Ghesquière as “an incomparable creative talent.” He leaves at the end of the month. I will say Nicolas revamped Balenciaga, not in the way Tom ford did for gucci, which was on the brink of irrelevanancy, but he definitely turned the brand into the cool girls go to, the motorcycle bag and all it’s versions did something amazing for Balenciaga. But I am interested to see the direction the new creative director will take it.
