an all-Black cast. Get deets on the Kenny Leon-directed LIFETIME movie
As if news of the Sparkle remake wasn't enough,
producers over at LIFETIME are, according to Deadline.com, digging in the crates
and dusting off the 1989 film Steel Magnolias. One of my faves when I need a
good cry by the way.
The film, about a bunch of strong and sassy Southern
women, originally starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton along with
an all-star cast. But this go-round, producers are switching things up by
throwing race into the dynamic and setting the film in Louisiana with an
all-Black cast. Yes, I'm side-eyeing this one for now.
The project will be directed by Kenny Leon (who also
directed Diddy and Phylicia Rashad in the 2004 Broadway revival for tv "Raisin
In The Sun" and currently directing Angela Bassett & Samuel L. Jackson in
Broadway's "The Mountaintop.")
Sally Robinson has signed on to write the new Steel
Magnolias script and is expected to base it off Robert Harlings' screenplay for
the movie.
Now that we know LIFETIME wants to mimic the classic
film and use an all-star cast, it begs the question....who should star in the
remake? Better yet...who SHOULDN'T. We have a few to list for the
latter.
Of course names like Angela Bassett, Alfre Woodard and
Loretta Devine are likely to be thrown in the mix, but what about the newbies on
the rise like Tika Sumpter and Tessa Thompson?

New Edition and their fan favorite “If It Isn’t Love” video, Bey adds her own
flair and twist to the video with some clever and daring costume changes that
compliment her infamously curvy figure. After the video’s debut, fans on the Web

@DamoneRoberts of the clip. Fan @calinative also enjoyed the video by saying, “I
think this is my fave video of the album so far.”

the 2nd verse wasn't omitted though.”

different angle. “I was hoping for a more 80s inspired video since that was the

shared.

past, and even mentioned another video said to be awaiting a release from her

seized on the “poor Sandra Bullock” angle in regards to the new romance between

I doubt OK! has a source as they’re just recounting
known details of Ryan and Sandra’s possible romance. I do think that Ryan and
Sandra were together and I like to imagine it as sweet and hot for both of them
while it lasted. As for how Sandra’s faring now, she’s probably hurt but I doubt
she’s pining for Ryan. I bet she was cautious about it too, and didn’t fall too
hard for him. I would love to see her with a guy who is fully committed to her,

What a day it was! Three hundred guests traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to celebrate the lavish nuptials of New Orleans Hornet Chris Paul, 26, and his college sweetheart, Jada Crawley, 27. Aunties and cousins mingled with celebs and NBA superstars, including groomsman LeBron James. “Chris and Jada are like an extension of my family,” says James. “He’s like the brother I never had. I’m here for him no matter what — and not only for Chris but also Lil’ Chris and Jada.”
Support from friends and family has been a blessing
for the couple. “Chris and I just are hometown, everyday people,” reveals Jada,
who met Chris at a basketball tournament in Winston-Salem, North Carolina,
during her sophomore year in college. “She used to wear Jordans,” recalls Chris
fondly. “Jada was with me when I was broke.” Even so, Chris sometimes had to
check family members when he first started dating Jada. “Sometimes they gave me
the side-eye like, Is she here for the right reasons? But Chris stood up for

GA Teacher Who Lost Job Over Facebook Loses Court Battle Too…
When was the last time you worried about your online
reputation? Whether you think so or not, you could have an online reputation
that could cause problems with your current employer.
That was the case with Bartow County school teacher,
Ashely Payne. Payne lost her job after school officials questioned her about
images posted on her Facebook page.
Payne says she was forced to resign from her job at Apalachee High School in August 2009 after someone claiming to be a parent sent an email complaining about her vacation pictures.

At issue were several shots of Payne smiling while
holding alcoholic beverages during a trip to Europe and there was also a

The young teacher subsequently filed a lawsuit, asking
the court to determine that she was entitled to a due process hearing. She also
sought back pay and money for legal fees, however Superior Court Judge Chief
Judge David Motes ruled against her yesterday.
In the ruling, Motes notes that Georgia law maintains
that if employees resign, even when their hands are forced, it doesn’t equal an
involuntary termination.

real “Housewife” Cynthia Bailey, who gave a few details on the new season as she

UH-OH: The "Mahalia!" Production Company Says Sorry To Fantasia
I told you earlier that there was a lot of drama
surrounding the "casting" of Fantasia Barrino as Mahalia Jackson in an upcoming
film, and now the production company behind the film has come to the defense of
the singer.
In a statement issued today, the company clears up the
rumors about the movie's financing and how the Jackson family feels about
Fantasia.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's petition to
reinstate the death penalty for Mumia falls short.
Though the outcome for Troy Davis was a tragic one,
death penalty detractors saw a victory this week when the United States Supreme
Court denied the Philadelphia District Attorney's petition to reinstate the
death penalty for Mumia Abu-Jamal.
The Associated Press reports that Philadelphia
prosecutors will have to pursue a second death penalty sentence for Mumia, who
was convicted of killing police officer Daniel Faulkner in
1982.
The Court found that the death penalty instructions
were potentially misleading.
"At long last, the profoundly troubling prospect of Mr. Abu-Jamal facing an execution that was produced by an unfair and unreliable penalty phase has been eliminated," said John Payton, president of the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund. "Our system should never condone an execution that stems from a trial in which the jury was improperly instructed on the law."
The decision upholds a 2001 ruling by U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn Jr., first ruled that Abu-Jamal deserved a new sentencing hearing due to of flawed jury instructions regarding aggravating and mitigating factors.

Whitney Houston Fights Delta Crew Over Seatbelt + New Movie
Whitney Houston is back in the news letting us know
she’s still a Diva after almost getting kicked off a Delta Airlines flight
yesterday. Get this all this drama started after she refused to buckle her
seatbelt. Multiple sources are telling TMZ that Whitney boarded a flight in
Atlanta Wednesday afternoon and when she settled into her seat, a crew member
asked her to buckle up. Whitney refused and went off on the crew member until
another crew member came over and warned Houston that if she didn’t buckle up,
she would have to get off the plane.
Whitney eventually allowed one of the crew members to
grab the buckle and fasten it for the singer — and the plane was then cleared
for takeoff. Sources close to the singer say Whitney “overreacted a little bit
after missing an earlier flight but she’s still 100% sober and was on the way to
Detroit for her first day of shooting a new movie.”
This will be Whitney’s first return to movies since
1996’s The Preacher’s Wife, is in negotiations to star in Sparkle, Sony Pictures
remake of the 1976 music-themed drama. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and
actor Mike Epps also are set to star. P.S. Did I tell yall Ray-J just moved to
the ATL I wonder who she was seeing last weekend?

Lil Wayne is Not Feeling Luther Campell
And the feeling is mutual. Earlier this week Luther
Campbell wrote an edict vowing to expel Lil Wayne, Diddy and all of Cash Money
from Miami if they didn't start giving back to the community.

This free loading and mooching of my city has got to
stop. There used to be a day when out of town rappers were scared to throw their
weight around Miami. It didn't matter if they were coming from New York or Los
Angeles, they knew better than to act like they owned this mother fucker.
I'm giving them a deadline. They got until January 1.
If I don't see them giving back to the Magic City, I'm gonna have their Miami
cards revoked. They won't be getting into any more nightclubs. They won't be
able to go near our women. And Lil Wayne is gonna have to find floor seats for
New Orleans Hornets home games because he won't be allowed inside the Triple

Chart Check: Adele Reigns Atop Singles Chart, Rihanna Rises
With their battle at the 2011 American Music Awards
forthcoming, it seems the competition is already heating up on the charts. For
chart titan Adele, the premiere of the ‘Someone Like You’ visual two weeks ago
undoubtedly assisted its (re-)ascension to the top spot. The cut, the latest
lifted from her multiplatinum ‘21′ LP, moved ‘Moves Like Jagger’ from its
previous reign – checking Christina Aguilera and co. into the #2 spot for the
third week in a row.
Rihanna, on the other hand, is finding herself getting
two steps closer to dethroning the soulful songstress as ‘We Found Love’ rises
from 9-7 in its second week on charts. And, with its accompany visual’s
upcoming release, the song will assuredly get the boost it needs to get into the
top 5 (if not top the tally).
Otherwise, the charts saw little movement with David
Guetta and Usher’s ‘Without You’ remaining at #8 for a second week and chart
titan Lady Gaga’s ‘You & I’ rebounding to round out the top 10 at
#10.
Tamar Finds Out Mama Braxton Don’t Play
*When you’re Tamar Braxton you’re used to just popping
off at the mouth and saying literally who knows what, followed by a
“whatever.com.”
Well, while the cameras were rolling for season 2 of
“Braxton Family Values,” it seems her mouth got her into some trouble with the
home-folks who pushed back on her. In the clip below, she’s asking why they all
attacked her for stating that she’s no longer interested in doing the
doo-wop.com thing. (Ok, my words, not hers.)
