The Daily Buzz For Dec 13

‘The Hamilton Mixtape’ Dethrones The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ as the No. 1 Album in the Country
There hasn’t been a compilation album atop the Billboard 200 albums chart since Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music achieved the feat with 2012’s Cruel Summer. The Hamilton Mixtape became the first compilation to land the top spot with 187,000 sold last week (of that sum, 169,000 were in traditional album sales), according to Billboard. The mixtape, which was inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s headline-grabbing musical, beat out The Weeknd’s Starboy and Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! for the top spot.
Miranda reacted to the news via Twitter with a trio of emoji’s, and on a more serious note, thanked his co-contributors for their “amazing work.” Nas, The Roots, Wiz Khalifa, and Alicia Keys and other notable artists all lent their talent to the project.
Hamilton has been an unquestionable commercial and critical hit. The stage show has won 11 Tony awards, and the Broadway iteration is sold out until July of 2017. Apparently the success of Hamilton has impacted other musical components of the show as well.
“The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton peaked at No. 3 on the July 2-dated chart, and has spent 63 weeks (and counting) on the tally,” noted Keith Caulfield of Billboard. “On the latest chart, it moves 10-11 with 45,000 units (though it is up 33 percent).”

A minor stir was caused when crowd members booed as the cast of Hamilton directly addressed vice president-elect Mike Pence during his attendance at showing in November. President-elect Donald Trump scolded the cast via Twitter, and Pence later said he was not offended. Trump supporters later called for a Hamilton boycott, but the numbers indicate such a proposed boycott has had little if any impact.

#RHoA: Cynthia Bailey Does Not Regret Marrying Peter Thomas, But Admits: I reached a breaking point.
In a new interview, Cynthia Bailey is opening up about her split from Peter Thomas. As you know, the model and Real Housewives of Atlanta star and Peter have decided to call it a quits after a nine-year relationship and a six-year marriage. On when Cynthia knew to throw in the towel, she says,
"I think I reached breaking point. Since I’ve been in this marriage I’ve been working on this marriage. I got to a point where got tired of working on my marriage. I felt like I’ve given all I can give."
She also admits that she’s the one that pulled the trigger.
"I’ve initiated it. I think in Peter’s heart he knows we’ve come to the end of the road. I think he’s the kind of person that would hang in there and keep roughing it out."

Cynthia shares that for her next birthday, she wants to be a peach.
"Next year I’ll be turning 50, and it’s important me that when I wake up on my 50th birthday I really want to open my eyes and love everything I see, and love the person I’m with. And have peace."

However, she has no regrets."This marriage was supposed to happen. I’ve been engaged a couple of times, but Peter is the only man I married. I have absolutely no regrets, but I just want peace and I wasn’t getting peace and that’s what I want for my next chapter."

#EMPIRE: Gabourey Sidibe: Her New Memoir Cover Shows her Slimmed Down Look
*Well, well, well. Looky here. Gabourey Sidibe is looking like another person these days. That’s because she’s lost some serious, serious weight and is now sporting a more slimmed down body.

Folks are getting to see the new look “Empire” actress in photo that’s the cover shot for her new memoir, “This is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare,” that’s coming in May of 2017. People, by the way, has an exclusive first look at the autobiography’s cover and the photo shoot from which the image was taken.
“I’m writing a book about me; it’s what I was like before I was an actress, what my life is like now that I am now, and if it even matters,” the author, actress and Oscar nominee — who rose to fame for her turn in the 2009 drama Precious — said in a 2016 PaleyFest interview in L.A. “I write about hair, I write about clothing, I write about marriage and divorce and relationships … I write about a lot of things I’ve experienced.”
People reports that “in an exclusive video from a recent photo shoot for the book, Sidibe shows off a slimmed-down figure. The American Horror Story alum first showed off her weight loss in an Instagram selfie she posted in September, on which fans and followers congratulated her for the new look.”
It’s no secret that Sidibe has said she’s struggled for years with both her weight and embracing body-positivity.

“It’s something I had to work at,” Sidibe said on a 2009 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
“My first diet started when I was 6 years old. I’ve never been a small girl, and one day, I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and no matter what other people thought of my body. I had to love myself. I was something like — I was like 21-ish, 22-ish — when I decided. I had just got tired of feeling bad all the time; I got tired of hating myself. I really, really had to have a conversation with myself and find what I love about myself.”

Watch Mariah Carey & R. Kelly Perform ‘The Christmas Song’
Mariah Carey continues to bring the Christmas joy with her NYC concert series.
After surprising fans with John Legend, Mimi brought out one of her all-time favorite male singers, R. Kelly, for a special duet performance at the Beacon Theatre. Mariah and Kellz celebrated the season with a cover of Nat King Cole’s classic “The Christmas Song.”

“We’ve never done this before,” Mariah told the audience, before explaining her nervousness. “I want to do this song and I’ve never done it before so I’m a little nervous, especially because this is one of my favorite singers right here,” she added, pointing at Kelly.
Nerves aside, Mariah and the Pied Piper dazzled the audience with their vocals, before toasting to the holidays with eggnog. Kelly, who just released his holiday album 12 Nights of Christmas, ended the performance by planting a series of kisses on Mariah’s cheek.

“@rkelly graced my show this holiday season as we performed our mutual favorite Christmas classic ‘The Christmas Song,’ by Nat King Cole,” Mariah wrote on Instagram. “#ThankYouKellz !!! You’re the best!!!” Meanwhile, Kelly said he “had a blast.”

Shirley Caesar Denies $5M Lawsuit Over ‘U Name It’, Doug. E. Fresh Isn’t Suing ‘Empire’
Grammy-winning gospel singer Shirley Caesar is setting the record straight about a $5M lawsuit over the #UNameItChallenge: It’s just not true.
According to Vibe, earlier this week it was being reported that someone filed a lawsuit on Caesar’s behalf against Atlanta-based producer DJ Suede for profiting off the challenge by selling his remixed version of the track and a video that features people twerking and consuming alcohol to the song.

But Caesar wrote on her Facebook page on Saturday that she’s not suing, but there is an injunction to stop the sales of the track and the video because they go against her beliefs and her brand.
“When they refused to remove the commercial song from the Internet and the video, to protect Pastor’s legacy and what Shirley Caesar stands for, we had to take legal action, secure a temporary injunction and order DJ Suede to remove the video, as well as cease and desist sales,” her statement reads.
“We want to make it clear Pastor Caesar does not endorse the imagery or abuse of alcohol endorsed in the video by having her voice everywhere on the track. Please also note, we have not filed any lawsuits or sued anyone even though it is my right.
But, it is our hope and prayer that DJ Suede and Empire will do the right thing, and respect Pastor Caesar’s legacy, image and name and follow the Court injunction ordering them to remove this video and the I-Tunes song, a clear violation of copyright and trademark laws.”

Caesar isn’t the only celeb denying lawsuits.
Apparently, Doug E. Fresh states that despite reports, he isn’t suing Empire for illegally sampling his 1993 classic, “I-ight.” He took to Twitter to clear up the confusion:

Was Prince Considering A Reality Show?
Here’s something else we lost with the death of Prince: A Netflix reality series centered on his Paisley Park home in Minnesota.
A Netflix spokesperson told The Associated Press on Saturday that the online entertainment company had been in “discussions” with Prince about a series, but that the project did not “come to fruition” before his death in April.

Photographer Maya Washington, a friend of the performer known for such hits as “Purple Rain” and “1999,” told GQ recently that he had talked about the show and how he didn’t want to be in it. “Why not? You’re so funny,” she told him. Answered Prince: “Maya, I can’t be funny. I have to save the world.”

Cardell Hayes found GUILTY of manslaughter in Will Smith shooting!
An Orleans Parish jury on Sunday night found Cardell Hayes guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith.
Hayes, who stood still and stared straight ahead during the verdict, was also found guilty of attempted manslaughter in the shooting of Will Smith's wife, Racquel, who could be heard weeping in the courtroom after the verdict was read.
Hayes was found not guilty of the third count of criminal damage to property for the crash that. The verdicts were not unanimous — 10-2 on both guilty verdicts — and unanimous on the not guilty verdict.
He faces up to 40 years in prison for the manslaughter charge. He will be sentenced on Feb. 17.

Deputies placed Hayes in handcuffs after the verdict as friends and family began to cry.  Bounce artist Big Freedia, a cousin of Hayes, had her head in her hands.
Current Saints head coach Sean Payton was in the courtroom as the verdict was read, and former Saints running back Pierre Thomas was also there.
Deuce McAllister, also a former Saints player, said outside the courthouse, "It's not a win for anybody. It was a tough situation. There was no way either side could win."
The prosecution attorneys didn't speak to the media after the verdict. The Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office releases a statement, saying, "The District Attorney is gratified by the verdict. He believes that it was victory for the Smith family as well as the citizens of of New Orleans."
Cardell Hayes attorney John Fuller said, "I respect the jury's verdict, and I respect the pain both families are feeling tonight."

The jury handed up their decision 5 hours after Orleans Parish Criminal District Judge Camille Buras sent the four men and eight women to deliberate at 4:53 p.m.
The decision came after hearing almost five hours of closing arguments and a rebuttal from Assistant District Attorneys Jason Napoli and Laura Rodrigue, and defense attorney John Fuller.
Both sides reiterated their cases: the state arguing Hayes needlessly shot a defenseless man, while the defense said Hayes saved his own life after an enraged Will Smith went for a gun.
Rodrigue, in her 52-minute rebuttal to Fuller's nearly three-and-a-half hour closing argument, noted that Hayes's claim of self-defense doesn't stand since he rammed his Hummer into Smith's SUV intentionally and that Hayes got out of his vehicle with a gun.

Napoli told the jury Hayes should be found guilty of all three charges he faces, including second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder for Racquel Smith's injuries to her legs.
"A man is dead. A man is dead with seven bullets in his back," Napoli told the jury during the first part of his closing arguments, which lasted 52 minutes. "This is cold blooded murder on our streets."
"Things were happening so fast, as every witness testified so far, that split-second decisions had to be made," Fuller told the jury. "We still don't have a clue as to what all of them were going through that night."

The Daily Buzz For Nov 15

Zendaya Glams Up THR, Laughs Off Spider-Man Casting Controversy Over Her Race
Zendaya is in her prime and she doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. On top of being an actress, she’s making a name for herself in the fashion world (with her new clothing and shoe line) and she dabbles in the studio to bring some heat to the music scene.

Right now, she’s busy working on the acting wave as she shoots scenes for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming where she’s the female lead. Yes, chick is ready to take over the silver screen in a major way.
For the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, the 20-year-old starlet served up some vintage Hollywood glam in a long sleeved chiffon gown, posing it up alongside co-star Tom Holland.
In the cover story, the super woke actress, who launched her new clothing line last week, claps back at those who have a problem with her playing a role in the superhero film because of her race. Some folks are up-in-arms because they believe Daya will be starring as Mary Jane. But, that may not even be the case.
“People are going to react over anything,” Daya responded. “But nothing [about who she is playing] is fact. It's like, you guys are just making shit up at this point and then reacting to it. Whenever we were on set, one of us gets some random character name [on the call sheet]. [Bloggers were] like, ‘Oh they must be so and so.’ And we just crack up about it, because it's like, ‘Whatever you want to think. You'll find out.’ It's funny to watch the guessing game. But of course there's going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren't ready. I'm like, ‘I don't know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it's beautiful, and that's what should be reflected and that's what is reflected so you're just going to have to get over it.’

She gave a little insight about her character and whether she will be romantically involved with Peter Parker. She said:
“No [laughs]. My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she's so smart, she just feels like she doesn't need to talk to people, like ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you're just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she's deep. She's always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don't really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

The “wise before her time” young adult also talked about turning her SnapChat into a much-needed African-American History class:
“I like to post selfies and fun things that I'm working on. But recently my Snapchat has become like a history class. I have become an African-American history professor. I thought, ‘People are going to be so irritated.’ A lot of kids don't even learn some of this stuff in school. Like how is it that some of my fans are learning more about black history on my Snapchat in second increments than in school? I feel like if you have a platform, it's your obligation to talk about how you feel. To me there's no excuse to be ignorant anymore. Everything is at your fingertips. You can't pretend like you're not seeing innocent black men being killed. We have videos, and they're circulating all over the internet. Or you can't pretend you're not understanding things about politics or hearing what people are saying who are our presidential candidates. It's an interesting time. And I feel like it's allowing us millennials to really take over.”

You can read her full interview here.  Zendaya's THR cover will be released November 18th

Dylan Roof May Not Be Competent Enough To Stand Trial
On June 17, 2015 a white man, who has since been identified as Dylann Roof, shot and killed nine members of the historically black Charleston church, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Roof was charged with several counts of murder and attempted murder, in addition to a possession of a firearm while committing a felony. According to reports, he also faces federal hate crime charges and the death penalty.

However, a judge recently revealed that he believes the then 21-year-old gunman may be mentally incompetent. Therefore, unable to stand trial until he’s been further evaluated and receives treatment, “aimed at restoring him to competence,” NY Daily News reports.
According to court documents, U.S Judge Richard Gergel found reason to believe Dylann  Roof, “may presently be suffering from a mental disease or defect.” As a result, he ordered another competency exam for the gunman. Apparently, a report on the exam is expected in on Monday and a hearing will be held on Wednesday.

Gergel’s plan, according to reports, is to rule on Roof’s competency within days and begin jury selection on the 21st of this month.

Did Keri Hilson Confirm Her Split With Serge Ibaka?
Most of us have noticed that Orlando Magic baller, Serge Ibaka and Keri Hilson have been absent from each other’s social media pages for at least a year. We haven’t so much as gotten a selfie from the couple who used to be our #Goals on social media. It was first reported back in 2014 that the two split, with Keri teasing a bit that she was single. However, she never really confirmed anything in public. Did they break up? If so, what happened?
In an interview with Rolling Out, the “Almost Christmas” star says that being so public with her relationship left her jarred and has caused her to make the decision to be more private in the future.
“When you put things on Front Street, it opens the door for opinions. It opens the door for wolves to attack,” said Keri. “I certainly have been placed in that position where things have been written about me as it pertains to relationships that are so far from the truth. To me, that’s a personal attack. You can talk about my music all day, but when it comes to making up things and a character attack, I don’t take them well. It makes me want to be completely mysterious. You can’t really stop it though. It’s the climate we’re in.”

When it came to dating an athlete, as an established woman herself, Keri Hilson says that she felt that she was “different” than the typical. She also says that she was under the impression that the athlete she was dating was different from the stereotypical Baller.
“I think I am an exception to the rule when people think of R&B “divas.” I thought I found someone who’s also an exception. It wasn’t “enthralling” for me to date an athlete. It was on my list of “not to dos” — no rappers, no actors and no ball players. I broke my rule because I thought I found someone different … It wasn’t an attraction to the status and the money.”
For those of us anxious to hear some new music from Keri, she acknowledges that she’s on a brief hiatus, but is appreciative of all the love she’s been getting.
“I will say it’s a really cool feeling to know people are anticipating hearing more of me and my popularity hasn’t really waned even though I haven’t released anything in five years,” Hilson tells Rolling Out. “I am happy to know that people still care. Blogs still write about me. Photographers still show up at the airport. I don’t get it but I am so grateful.”

Keri Hilson’s third album, L.I.A.R., an acronym for Love Is a Religion, is still slated for release in the future. Hopefully that near future.

Now, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph steps behind the lens to produce a musical that will highlight Hyman’s life and career and possibly answer many questions that the music world was left wondering following her death.

The forthcoming musical titled “An Evening With Phyllis Hyman” is hoping to put some of the pieces together while at the same time highlighting her hit singles from the late 1970s to early 1990s, which included “You Know How to Love Me,” “Living All Alone,” and “Don’t Wanna Change the World.”
Hyman was also well-known as first cousin of actor Earle Hyman, who can be remembered for his recurring role on “The Cosby Show” as Russel Huxtable, Cliff’s father. She also starred in the 1981 musical “Sophisticated Ladies,” which was based on the music of Duke Ellington.
On June 30, 1995 and just shy of 46, Hyman committed suicide in 1995 after overdosing on prescription pills and left a note that read: I’m tired. I’m tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God Bless you.
The musical will center on “the untold story of the life, career and music of the singer/songwriter and actress in her own words,” writes CentricTV.com. It will also include the vocal powerhouses’ catalog which spans from the 1970s to the early 90s.
Sheryl Lee Ralph made her screen debut in the 1977 comedy film “A Piece of the Action,” before landing her breakthrough role as Deena Jones in the 1981 Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” for which she received Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.

NFL Receiver Mike Evans To Protest National Anthem After Trump’s Election
Athletes have protested the National Anthem this summer and fall to speak out against police brutality, and another NFL player plans to do the same after last week’s presidential election of Donald Trump.
Mike Evans, a wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sat during the anthem on Sunday, and said he would continue to. Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears was the Bucs’ annual “Salute To Service” game for Veterans Day. Evans said that while he is “forever indebted” to veterans, that the election and the social injustice in this country are too much to ignore.
“The things that’s been going on in America lately, I’m not going to stand for that. When Ashton Kutcher comes out and says we’ve been punked, then I’ll stand again. But I won’t stand anymore,” Evans said. “If this happens, then America’s not right, right now. I said this a long time ago. When [Donald Trump] ran, I thought it was a joke, and the joke continues.”

Kaepernick jumpstarted the protests in the NFL by sitting and then kneeling to take a stand against police brutality and racial injustice. Evans distinguished his reason from Kaepernick’s, but added a sentiment that many people have felt within the past week.
“I’m doing it for a different reason, for how a reality star can be the president. That’s not a good look,” he said. “…I’m not a political person that much, but I got common sense. And I know when something’s not right.”
“It’s not about the Republican party or the Democratic party or anything like that,” he continued. “It’s just who he is. It’s well-documented what he’s done. I’m not gonna stand for something I don’t believe in. That’s the end of that.”

Kim Kardashian recycles 2009 Princess Jasmine costume for fun with North
Kim Kardashian showed just what a success her diet pills and exercise plan has been, as she slipped back into her 2009 Halloween costume.
The reality star dug out her vintage Princess Jasmine costume for the celebration - even finding a matching outfit for each of her children.
Kim is still struggling to move past the traumatic events of October 3rd when she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris, and has stayed clear of social media in the weeks since.
But the the reality star obviously felt her costume was just too good to miss.
And the family fun was seen in pictures posted by her brother Rob to her paid-for blog kimkardashianwest.com.
The 29-year-old shared a couple of oh-so-cute images of the doting mom and her two children North and Saint. In the precious snap, North appeared next to Saint, aged 11 months, who was dressed as her counterpart, Aladdin, complete with red Fez.
Both were seated on a 'magic carpet,' while North held a gold 'magic lamp' as well.
Rob, who just became a father for the first time on Thursday, described how the magical gathering came together.
'Now you know Kim loves Halloween. She couldn't disappoint North once she found a Princess Jasmine costume from back in the day.'

CUTE!
