#RHOA: Kandi Burruss and Tabitha Brown Join 'Beyond the Gates' as New Drama Hits Fairmont Crest
Kandi Burruss and Tabitha Brown will guest-star as Kalista Kilroy and Tia Allen on CBS’ Beyond the Gates on October 22.
Their debut coincides with a celebration of Dani Dupree that turns tense when an unexpected guest resurfaces unresolved family drama.
Burruss and Brown join a growing roster of reality-TV guests on the history-making soap, including Real Housewives of Potomac stars Karen Huger, Gizelle Bryant, and Wendy Osefo.

Beyond the Gates is adding some serious star power to Fairmont Crest, and the latest arrivals are stepping into a family situation that's already headed for trouble. Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and Emmy-winning entertainer Tabitha Brown join the CBS daytime soap on Thursday, October 22, as a celebration honoring Dani Dupree threatens to reopen old wounds.

According to Michael Fairman TV, Burruss will play Kalista Kilroy, while Brown will debut as Tia Allen. Eagle-eyed viewers caught both names in the show's closing credits earlier this week, ahead of their scheduled appearances.
And the timing couldn't be more interesting.
The October 22 episode finds the Dupree family celebrating Dani (Karla Mosley) and her accomplishments, but the festivities take a turn when an unexpected guest brings unresolved tensions back to the surface.

According to official episode spoilers, Naomi (Arielle Prepetit), Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla), and Andre (Sean Freeman) will be left to deal with the fallout.
Whether Burruss or Brown is involved in that confrontation remains unrevealed.
For Burruss, the appearance adds another acting credit to a career that extends well beyond reality television. The Grammy-winning songwriter and Xscape founding member spent 14 seasons on The Real Housewives of Atlanta and became one of the franchise's most recognizable personalities.

She also won Season 3 of The Masked Singer, appeared on Showtime's The Chi, and earned a Tony Award nomination for producing Broadway's The Piano Lesson.
Brown has followed a different path to television success. Known to millions of social media followers as “America's Mom,” the actress, author, and food personality has turned her online following into a multifaceted entertainment career.

She hosted Food Network's plant-based cooking competition It's CompliPlated and won an Emmy for her children's series Tab Time.
But Burruss isn't the first Real Housewives personality to enter the Duprees' orbit. The Real Housewives of Potomac has already supplied several guest stars to Beyond the Gates, including Karen Huger, Gizelle Bryant, and Wendy Osefo.

The series itself has been making television history since its February 2025 premiere. Created by Michele Val Jean and produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios, Beyond the Gates became the first new American network daytime soap in more than 25 years. Its predominantly Black cast centers on the wealthy Dupree family, whom CBS describes as “the very definition of Black royalty.”

Set in an affluent Maryland community outside Washington, D.C., the show follows a family whose public standing doesn't always match what happens behind closed doors. Family feuds, romantic entanglements, and carefully guarded secrets have remained central to the drama.
The series has also expanded beyond its original CBS and Paramount+ audience. Pluto TV launched a free, dedicated Beyond the Gates channel in August 2025, initially offering more than 90 episodes. New installments are added eight days after their CBS premieres.

Their first appearances air Thursday, October 22, on CBS.

#HipHopNews: Nas calls for unity: “Our greats have been stolen from and ripped off of”
In a new open letter, Nas revealed he'd spent the past year working on music while reflecting on the culture's history and blues legend Robert Johnson's legacy.
The rapper questioned the industry's obsession with trends and called for greater appreciation of the contributions that shaped today's music.
Nas signed off with “BLAK MUSIC 2026” but didn't explain what it means or whether it's connected to an upcoming project.

Music has come a long way, but Nas believes the people who helped shape it haven't always received the recognition or compensation they deserve.
On Thursday (Oct. 15), the Hip Hop icon shared an open letter on X reflecting on the industry's history, its treatment of influential musicians, and the direction of today's culture. He also offered a glimpse into what he's been doing behind the scenes. “For the past year I’ve been watching so much happen in the culture while working on music,” he began. “I think about how it started, I think about the Mississippi Delta to New Orleans to New York. I think about Robert Johnson at the crossroads, how he changed music, and how we can’t even find his grave.”

Johnson, a blues musician whose influence extends across generations, was central to Nas' larger point about the artists who laid the groundwork for today's music scene. He wrote, “Sometimes I look at all artists, creators and executives the same way. The music game forgets or doesn’t compensate the foundation. Our greats have been stolen from and ripped off of.”
For the Queens native, the conversation goes beyond money. He also questioned whether chasing the next big sound has distracted musicians and decision-makers from the culture's deeper purpose. “We can’t keep creating music for the sake of a ‘trend’,” he continued. “We have to remember the purpose and our contribution and how many things we created. Where’s the love for each other at... We gotta take a stand as one. It’s time for a celebration of the music.”

Nas closed with another pointed message: “No knowledge of self is certain death! It’s time to address it.” The statement ended with his full name, Nasir Jones, followed by “BLAK MUSIC 2026.” While he confirmed he's been working on music, he didn't explain whether the sign-off refers to an upcoming project or something else.

This letter comes nearly a year after the 53-year-old rapper teamed up with DJ Premier for Light-Years, their first full-length collaborative album. The 15-track release, which also features AZ, closed out Mass Appeal's Legend Has It series celebrating influential rap artists.

Nas reflects on Hip Hop’s challenges and why the genre is timeless
As previously reported, Nas revisited his Hip Hop Is Dead declaration back in October 2025. Although he acknowledged some concerns about the genre, he also recognized the artists helping it move forward. “I used to say [that] Hip Hop is dead. It is kind of dead, but we have to think about it, in a sense, like that. Because if you think about it, this year is really incredible. I mean, Kendrick’s been on a roll, Clipse [is] cooking, [there’s the] Legend Has It [series], Mass Appeal,” he explained.

He also praised younger rappers and women in Hip Hop for contributing to the culture while acknowledging that violence and a lack of growth can threaten its progress. Despite those concerns, he maintained that the genre continues to evolve. “I think rap is timeless, and yeah, Hip Hop is timeless,” Nas added. He emphasized that the genre can remain relevant as long as artists bring fresh ideas and create music that genuinely connects with listeners.

Mississippi AG says police shooting that killed 1-year-old was ‘justified’
The fatal shooting of a 1-year-old by a Mississippi police officer who fired at a vehicle while responding to a shoplifting call was a “justified” use of force, the state attorney general said Monday.
Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office issued the brief statement four months after Kohen Wiley was killed when an officer shot at a car that police said was fleeing from a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia.

“Today, the Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of a June 14, 2026, incident in Senatobia involving one officer with the Senatobia Police Department,” the AG’s office said in the statement. “In this incident, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation.
In a statement, an attorney for Wiley’s family questioned the investigation’s conclusions and urged the department to release body camera video from the shooting.

“If the footage supports the state’s decision, release it,” Ben Crump said in the statement. “We will not stop fighting until this family gets the truth.”
There was no immediate response from Wiley’s family, which has for months been taking part in protests demanding justice for the slain boy in the small town 40 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.

The shooting happened after the responding officers arrived at Walmart and saw “two subjects and a juvenile child fleeing from the store into a vehicle,” the MBI said.
Kohen’s mother, whom her lawyer identified as Vellesiya Wiley, was a passenger. Her friend was driving.
“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of the officers, almost striking one,” the MBI said in a June 14 report. “An officer then discharged their weapon and the vehicle fled the scene. The subjects arrived at a local hospital where one juvenile child in the vehicle was pronounced deceased, and another subject had critical injuries.”

Kohen’s mother has disputed that account.
In a video Crump posted on social media in June, Wiley said they had gone to Walmart for diapers. She said that her friend was briefly stopped while they were leaving the store and that “I kept walking because it had nothing to do with me.”
“By the time me and my baby got in the car, she came,” Wiley said of her friend.

They encountered police as they began to back out, Wiley said.
“I raised my baby up trying to show them that he was in the car,” she said.
In that moment, Wiley’s friend inadvertently hit another car while Wiley’s door was open.

Wiley said her friend did not try to hit the officers. “They was all on the right side, and she was driving towards the left,” she said.
In July, the family’s lawyers, Crump and Van Turner, released a preliminary autopsy report that they contend showed that the bullet that killed the child and wounded the driver was fired through one side of the car, fueling fresh questions about whether the shooting was justified.
“His mother, who has not been charged with any crime, says she was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car,” Crump said.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts likely out for season after blood clots found in lungs and leg
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs and a leg, the team said Monday, most likely sidelining the Super Bowl MVP for the rest of 2026.
Hurts last played Oct. 11, in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, before he was kept off the field in Sunday’s 25-14 setback to the visiting Carolina Panthers.

Hurts was originally diagnosed with “superficial vein thrombosis” in his left calf, the team said.
“After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli,” the statement continued. “He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.”
Both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are forms of venous thromboembolism, commonly known as blood clots in the veins, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

DVT develops when a blood clot forms in a vein deep within the body, most commonly in the leg, the CDC says. PE happens when pieces of a blood clot from a DVT break off and travel to the veins in the lungs.
The clots can prevent blood from reaching the lungs, which can be fatal.

Hurts is being treated with blood thinners, and “during this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football,” according to the Eagles.
Hurts was held out of the game Sunday after the Eagles announced last week that a superficial blood clot was found in London ahead of the game against the Jaguars.
Despite the diagnosis, Hurts still played the full game in London.

“Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that [Hurts] could safely play,” the team said last week, adding that he “played without limitation.”
But when a follow-up scan was conducted back in Philadelphia, the team said, the superficial blood clot had moved, which prompted it to pull Hurts from the game against the Panthers. Further testing revealed the deep vein clot and the clots in the lungs, leading to Hurts’ being indefinitely sidelined.

The team didn’t set an exact timeline for his return, though action for 2026 seems highly unlikely.
A blood thinner treatment can typically last three to six months as doctors bring the condition under control and search for any previously undiagnosed, underlying conditions.
And contact sport athletes can’t play while they are taking blood thinners because of the risk of uncontrollable, and potentially deadly, bleeding from an injury.

“We anticipate that he will have no long-term effect,” the club said.
Hurts was MVP of Super Bowl 59, leading his team to a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.
The team’s 2026 fortunes now rest in the hands of career backup Tanner McKee, a sixth-round 2023 draft pick.
McKee, 26, who played at Stanford, comes from the same high school graduation class as NFL signal-callers Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers, Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Will Levis, who is on the practice squad of the New York Jets.

Philadelphia won the 2018 Super Bowl with backup QB Nick Foles leading it past Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. The journeyman Foles was the game’s MVP, executing one of football’s most famous trick plays that evening, the “Philly Special.”

Halle Berry's son Maceo testifies for four hours at DV hearing
Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez‘s son Maceo testified for almost four hours in court on Monday.
The 13-year-old was allowed to testify as part of an ongoing dispute between his parents involving a domestic violence restraining order request.
Halle has been accused by Olivier of abusing Maceo and was joined by her legal team and fiancé Van Hunt at the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday (October 19), according to Page Six.

The outlet says eyewitnesses at the hearing described the proceedings as “icy,” and Maceo testified for close to four hours. The judge ordered everyone out of the room so his testimony would remain sealed.
Maceo reportedly did not engage with his mother, but was seen speaking to his dad.
Halle has accused Olivier of trying to turn their son against her.

The former couple married in July 2013 and separated two years later. They were declared legally single in 2016 and finalized their divorce in 2023.
Earlier this month, Olivier filed a temporary restraining order against his ex-wife after alleging their son called him and claimed she had tried choking him over an incident involving virtual reality goggles.
Olivier‘s TRO request was granted by a judge, covering him and Maceo. However, the judge ordered a temporarily modified visitation, meaning partial custody is to be “continued to maintain communication between” mother and son.

Page Six reports the alleged incident happened in late September and Halle reportedly called their son “an idiot” over playing the VR game.
The Monster’s Ball star reacted to the claims through her lawyer, saying the filing is “entirely meritless and deliberately misleading would be an understatement.”
Olivier is requesting sole physical and legal custody, the judge also restricted Halle’s visitation rights with Maceo. Halle asked the judge to deny Olivier‘s restraining order request and lift the visitation restrictions. She is seeking to reinstate 50-50 custody.

Halle‘s daughter Nahla Aubry, 18, who Halle shares with model Gabriel Aubry, has also responded to the child abuse allegations being made against her mother.Maceo Martinez testified for nearly four hours Monday in a court hearing regarding a domestic violence restraining order request against his mother. The 13-year-old son of Halle Berry and ex-husband Olivier Martinez gave his evidence in a cleared courtroom to ensure the teen's testimony would remain sealed. Berry has been accused by Martinez of abusing Maceo. She was joined in Los Angeles Superior Court by her legal team and her fiancé, Van Hunt. Martinez arrived with Maceo and was joined by his own legal team.

Vinny Guadagnino Says ‘Jersey Shore' 'Triggered' His Mental Health Issues
Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino regrets temporarily leaving the show in the 2010s and views it as his way of “escaping.”
The reality television personality recounted his time on Jersey Shore on the Oct. 15 episode of Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast and explained that his mental state had worsened due to non-stop partying and drinking on the show.

Around the 44-minute mark of the video below, Vinny said that he struggled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) since childhood and was often “ruminating” and had “intrusive thoughts.” By adulthood, he wanted to feel “normal” among his Jersey Shore cast mates. Vinny briefly left the show during season five in 2012, citing his struggles with anxiety.
“I did leave at that point because I didn't know how to like deal with it anymore,” Vinny said. “But now looking back on it, now that like I'm in therapy and everything and I've learned a lot about OCD and stuff, leaving is probably like the worst thing that you could do. Because you're escaping.”

Vinny went on to describe the avoidance as “running away,” but admitted that it was “tough” to continue on the show. He would ultimately return to the show just days after his departure and has also starred on spinoffs A Double Shot at Love and Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.
“The physicality of the show is grueling. There's no day, there's no second off, from the moment you wake up ‘til you go to sleep, you're drinking and you're partying and shit,” he continued. “So it wasn't the greatest environment for me to be in. It triggered a lot of that kind of stuff, but they didn't understand.”

Vinny added that he’s learned to “roll with the discomfort” of depression and anxiety and “sit with it.”
In a 2020 episode of Click Bait with Bachelor Nation, Vinny joked that he had anxiety before the condition was popularized.
"I used to scream out that I was having anxiety and everyone kind of looked at me funny, like, 'What's wrong with this kid?' But now there's a lot more awareness behind it and a lot of people are talking about it,” he said, per People.

'90 Day Fiancé' Star Kenny Niedermeier Mourns Father Norm, a Hall of Fame Football Coach

90 Day Fiancé star Kenny Niedermeier mourned his father, Norman “Norm” Niedermeier, calling the 92-year-old “the greatest, kindest, most open-hearted, genuine man” he had known.
Norm coached football at Ohio’s Ottawa Hills High School for 40 years, earning 210 wins, eight league championships, four undefeated seasons, multiple Hall of Fame honors, and a stadium named after him.
Kenny said his children, siblings, extended family, and friends comforted him after the funeral, while his husband, Armando Rubio, and fellow franchise star David Toborowsky shared condolences.

90 Day Fiancé star Kenny Niedermeier is mourning the death of his father, Norman "Norm" Niedermeier, a Hall of Fame football coach who spent four decades building a high school sports powerhouse in Ohio. Norm died Oct. 5 at age 92, leaving behind a legacy that includes 210 football victories, multiple championship seasons, and a stadium named in his honor.

"My wonderful 92-year-old father passed away this week in Toledo, Ohio," Kenny announced on Instagram, sharing a photo of the pair enjoying a coffee run. "The greatest, kindest, most open-hearted, genuine man I've ever known. Love you, Dad."
For Kenny, the loss is deeply personal. But in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, Norm's name carries its own weight. According to his obituary, the longtime football coach led the Ottawa Hills Green Bears for 40 years, compiling 210 wins, eight league championships, four undefeated seasons, and a 23-game winning streak. His accomplishments earned him induction into multiple halls of fame, including the State of Ohio Coaches Hall of Fame.

The school eventually named its football stadium after him, cementing his place in the community's athletic history. Kenny previously shared a photo of himself, Norm, and his daughter, Cassidy, standing outside Niedermeier Stadium.
Norm's career wasn't limited to the sidelines. A University of Michigan graduate who played football and competed in varsity gymnastics, he began his professional life teaching biology at Ottawa Hills. He later became dean of students and athletic director and continued coaching football until his retirement in 1997.

His influence extended beyond athletics. According to his obituary, Norm was an avid bowler, enjoyed fishing trips with fellow retired teachers, and worked with stained glass. He even created a window for St. Clement Catholic Church, where he was a charter parishioner for 69 years.
Following his father's funeral, Kenny returned to Instagram with another tribute, reflecting on the people who helped him navigate the loss.
"Had a beautiful send off for my Father of a life of 92 years well lived," he wrote. "Beyond the sadness was a lot of happiness as well."

Kenny said spending time with his siblings, extended family, and friends brought comfort during the difficult week. His children were especially important.

"My children gave me much comfort and plenty of smiles through all the tears," he continued. "Until we see each other again, Dad."
The loss comes just months after Kenny and husband Armando Rubio faced another family crisis when their 13-year-old daughter, Hannah, suffered a brain bleed in July.
Hannah was airlifted from Mexico to Phoenix for emergency treatment, while Armando initially struggled to obtain permission to enter the United States.

The family eventually reunited, and Hannah later returned to Mexico to continue recovering, although doctors had not identified the cause of the bleeding.
Armando was among those offering condolences following Norm's death. "Such an amazing man. Wish I could be there with you… but my heart is. Love you," he commented on Kenny's tribute.

Fellow 90 Day Fiancé star David Toborowsky also expressed sympathy, writing, "I am so sorry for your loss, Kenny. Sending out love to you and the entire family."
Norm was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Mary Ann. He is survived by five children, including Kenny, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jay-Z Reportedly Picks Himself to Perform Super Bowl Halftime Show 2027?
Jay-Z is the man in charge of the Super Bowl Halftime Show and it appears he’s finally ready to select himself as the headliner of the event.
The rapper has been overseeing the halftime show since 2019 and now it’s being reported that he will headline the show in 2027.
Puck is reporting that “multiple sources” confirm that Jay-Z will be the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner amid rumors for months that he was in the mix.

Miley just had her big return to music with her Hollywood Bowl headline shows this past weekend, which some believed could be a test run for her to headline the Halftime Show and then launch a lengthy residency next year.
Harry is wrapping up his 2026 dates of the Together Together tour on December 13 and then he has nearly four months off before the next leg begins in April. The halftime show would’ve been a great way to promote the upcoming shows on his tour.
Justin headlined at Coachella earlier this year and was considered to be another possible choice for the halftime show.

Well, if Jay-Z is headlining, it almost feels like Beyonce is guaranteed to make an appearance. This would mark her third time appearing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show after previously headlining in 2013 and then performing as a special guest in 2016.
We can also assume that Jay will probably bring out some other Roc Nation artists. Some of the biggest names at the management company include Rihanna, J. Cole, Megan Thee Stallion, A$AP Rocky, and Alicia Keys.

Nothing is confirmed yet though!

Black MAGA Influencer Drives Over 2 Hours to Support Ken Paxton, Gets Kicked Out of His Rally
Thelma Louise says she was humiliated and removed without explanation from a Texas campaign event. The incident brings renewed attention to Paxton’s political record and policies affecting Black and Latino communities.

Black MAGA Influencer Drives Over 2 Hours to Support Ken Paxton, Gets Kicked Out of His Rally

A Black MAGA influencer says she was escorted out of Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton’s campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, October 18, despite years of publicly supporting Donald Trump and other Republican politicians.
Thelma Louise, a conservative content creator with more than 200,000 TikTok followers, said she drove over two hours to attend Paxton’s “Come and Take It” campaign tour. Instead of meeting the candidate or covering the event as planned, she says security personnel ordered her to leave.

According to the San Antonio Current, Louise documented her arrival at Crown Ridge Banquet Hall, filmed protesters outside and interviewed a reporter in the parking lot. She was reportedly recording a speaker inside when security approached her.
In a TikTok video shared after the incident, Louise appeared shocked as she explained what happened.
“Oh my gosh. I cannot believe this. Someone just came up to me and said that Ken Paxton’s campaign manager wanted me to leave,” she said. “I am just … My mouth is wide open right now. I really can’t believe this.”

Louise repeatedly insisted she had done nothing wrong. As someone escorted her out, she tried unsuccessfully to speak with another campaign representative.
“And there’s no one that I can talk to about this?” Louise asked.
“I’m sorry, no, ma’am,” the unidentified person responded.
The experience appeared particularly upsetting because of Louise’s history of promoting Republican candidates. She said she left the Democratic Party two years ago and volunteered for Trump’s campaign.

“I have done nothing but support everyone on the Republican side, and this is how I get treated?” she questioned.
In a follow-up video, Louise made clear that she was holding Paxton’s campaign manager responsible rather than abandoning her support for Republicans.
“[They] have loved me, and they have welcomed me with open arms. But Ken Paxton’s campaign manager, that person is 100 percent responsible for the disrespect that I received this evening.”

She ended with another emotional statement.
“This, I will never forget. Never. This was beyond disrespectful.”
Louise also said she had previously received press credentials for Republican events. She maintained that she never received a clear explanation for her removal. Paxton’s campaign did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.

There is currently no verified evidence establishing that Louise was removed because of her race. However, the incident has drawn attention to the record of the Republican politician she traveled to support.
As Texas attorney general, Paxton has spent years advancing policies that civil rights organizations argue threaten protections and opportunities for Black and Latino communities.
In August 2024, investigators working under Paxton executed search warrants involving Latino political activists and Democratic campaign workers in South Texas. According to The Texas Tribune, some targeted individuals were members of the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC.

Paxton defended the searches as part of an election fraud investigation. LULAC, however, accused his office of intimidating Latino voters and requested federal intervention. The investigation subsequently produced criminal indictments, although those charges do not establish that everyone searched committed wrongdoing.
Paxton has also aggressively challenged diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Trump Administration Reportedly Hiring Private Debt Collectors After the Midterms,to go after your Student Loans
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to go after defaulted student loans with private debt collectors, and nearly 10 million borrowers could lose their tax refunds and part of their paychecks as soon as next year.
According to a report from The Washington Sun, five sources familiar with the plans say administration officials are getting ready to impose financial penalties on Americans who are in default on their federal student loans. Three of those sources said the Treasury Department is moving forward with hiring private debt collectors, possibly as soon as November.

Sources said the plans are unlikely to be announced before the midterm elections on November 3. One source put it bluntly: “It would be politically insane to do this before the midterms.”
A federal student loan goes into default after about nine months of missed payments. Once that happens, the government has two main ways to take its money back without the borrower’s permission.
The first is called an offset. The government intercepts money it was already going to send you, like your tax refund, part of your Social Security check, or tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

The second is wage garnishment. The government orders your employer to take a portion of your paycheck and send it straight to the government before you ever see it.
Some officials inside the administration are reportedly pushing to start both for the current tax year, which means borrowers filing by the April 15, 2027 deadline could see their refunds taken. Sources cautioned the start date could slip again, since officials want Treasury’s new Defaulted Loans Support Center fully running first.
Last year, the White House budget office began helping the Education Department prepare to seize benefits and wages from defaulted borrowers, according to the report. Treasury officials blocked it over concerns about the economic damage of going after workers’ money.

Treasury staff also reportedly warned senior officials that many of the borrowers who would get hit are Trump supporters, many of them already struggling to hold onto their jobs.
In April, the Education Department and Treasury signed an agreement making Treasury responsible for collecting on defaulted federal student loans as Trump works to shut down the Education Department. Treasury collects those debts through private collection agencies, the same kind of companies the Education Department stopped using in 2021 under Joe Biden.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued one of those collectors, Pioneer, in 2017 over deceptive and abusive practices, and a court ordered it to pay $100 million to borrowers in 2024. That same year, the bureau fined another collector, Transworld, $2.5 million for filing debt collection lawsuits without proof the debt was owed.

Treasury has rolled out an online portal meant to help borrowers see what they owe and how to pay, and the administration says it would rather get borrowers back into voluntary payment plans than take their money. Matt Chingos, a Treasury official and former Senate Republican staffer, is reportedly leading the effort to restart collections while limiting the fallout.
Marc Goldwein of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that Treasury’s delay on collections has already cost taxpayers about $5 billion, and that number keeps climbing.
Michael Pierce, executive director of Protect Borrowers, told the outlet that Treasury may not even have the data it legally needs to certify these debts before collecting on them. He accused the administration of waiting until after the election to avoid political consequences, and warned that families could face seized refunds, garnished wages and less money for food and rent.

The White House budget office and Treasury declined to comment. The Education Department dismissed the report.
If you are in default, you still have options before any of this kicks in. Borrowers can get out of default through loan rehabilitation, which usually means making nine affordable monthly payments over 10 months, or through consolidation into a new federal loan. Logging into StudentAid.gov will show your loan status, who holds your loan, and what you owe.
