#MAGFAB: Mark Ruffalo Is A Little Bored Of Mark Ruffalo!
In this FRONTPAGE interview, Hollywood’s reliable everyman Mark Ruffalo tells us about smashing his image to smithereens with his role in the upcoming 'Poor Things.' He’s never been happier.
Like many others of a certain age, I fell head over heels in love when I first saw Mark Ruffalo. As the hunky boy next door in 13 Going on 30 (2004), he exemplified a rare kind of actor in the cinema landscape; a gruff man’s man who constantly displayed his vulnerability – an emotionally earnest sweetheart with a beefy exterior. In a world of toxic masculinity, Ruffalo brought a presence that was heartwarming and safe, a quality that netted him a string of similar roles in still-beloved rom-coms like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Just Like Heaven (2005).

In a world of toxic masculinity, Ruffalo brought a presence that was heartwarming and safe, a quality that netted him a string of similar roles in still-beloved rom-coms like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Just Like Heaven (2005).
from the dogged detective of Zodiac (2007) to the tragic athlete of Foxcatcher (2014) to his humanist take on the Incredible Hulk, a part which catapulted him to the Hollywood stratosphere after over a decade of Marvel Studio films – Ruffalo is entirely unsurprised that we begin by discussing his era as the reliably comforting love interest. Well, mostly. The revelation that my husband screened his favorite Ruffalo performance for me in preparation for this interview (as the object of Gwyneth Paltrow’s affection in the outrΓ© flight attendant dramedy View From the Top [2003]) elicits a wide-eyed guffaw from Ruffalo. “Wow!” he cackles, his eyes alight with mirth behind a pair of chunky, square-framed glasses, incredulous that this is a performance he's being remembered by.
Speaking to me from a wood-paneled office in his home, he recognizes that for a legion of cinemagoers, he will always be seen as a dream man.
In some ways, it is this indelible impression that drew him to his role in surrealist director Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming Poor Things, a film and a character that has no comparison in Ruffalo’s filmography. In his first period piece (and his first time using a British accent on screen), he becomes the slimy lothario Duncan Wedderburn, a malicious attorney attempting to ensnare the naΓ―ve heroine played by Emma Stone. It is a role that obliterates the entire concept of Mark Ruffalo thus far. “I'm not playing the benevolent dad or the depressed dad or the fucked up dad,” he says. “I'm playing a bon vivant, a total egoist and megalomaniac. I feel like it opened up the brackets on how people see me as a performer. And how I see myself.”
Over a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke to Ruffalo about his career as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable everymen, and his joy in annihilating that image forever.
INDIANA: To put it mildly, Poor Things is not your average cinema-going experience, even if you compare it with the rest of Lanthimos’ films. I’m dying to know… what was your reaction when you first read the script?
RUFFALO: I was like, “Holy shit, this is really difficult material!” And it’s a kind of style that is difficult to pull off. I thought it was amazing, but I was like, “I don't know if I'm the right guy for this.” I'd never done anything like this!
I thought it was so smart. It cleverly hides this message about equality of women and freedom and conditioning, all of these really important issues that are hard to talk about straight on. But in this kind of film you could transcend polemics and tell a really funny, cool, interesting story and still get across those same ideas.
I'm playing a bon vivant, a total egoist and megalomaniac.
MARK RUFFALO
I watched a previous interview where you talked about how you like to pick roles based on how they challenge or scare you. What was it about Duncan that gave you that feeling?
I guess his confidence, and doing an English accent. I've never really done a period piece. I thought this might be outside my scope, but once I started to work on it, I saw how this could be fun and really push my boundaries and open up a whole new territory for me as an actor, which at that point I was really lusting for.
Was it fun?
Oh my God, I think that was the best time I've ever had on a movie. To play that character, to do all the physical comedy, the language, and to make the arc that he made, it was so crazy and so exciting. It's one foot on a banana peel and the other in a grave. We had this long rehearsal process where we just played games, and that really created this fearlessness within our little group. It was a blast.

#RHOA: Fans Notice Dr. Gregory and Lateasha Lunceford’s Wedding Planner Is the Same Employee Who Sued Kandi Burruss on ‘RHOA’
Quad Webb showed fans and some of her fellow “Married to Medicine” cast members when she popped up as the surprise guest at a bachelorette party for her ex-husband’s new soon-to-be wife.
On the Sunday, Nov. 19, episode, Webb walked into a bachelorette party for new cast mate Lateasha, aka “Sweet Tea,” after receiving an invitation from newbie Phaedra Parks, who claimed she wanted to help the cast “remember how much a fun girl she is.”
Lateasha seemed fine with the attendance of her soon-to-be husband’s ex-wife despite asking the ladies to stop bringing up her name at her engagement party in the Nov. 12 episode. But it was Toya Bush-Harris, who has her own disdain for Webb, that asked “Messy” Parks to escort her out of the party.
Fans are constantly discussing the trio’s interactions on the show, but an exclusive preview of next week’s episode will re-introduce fans to a familiar face.
Episode 4 of the Bravo reality series is set to revolve around Dr. Gregory and Lateasha’s wedding.
In another clip circulating online, fans were able to see that Johnnie Winston III not only attended their wedding but was also credited as Lateasha’s wedding planner. Name rings a bell? That’s because he’s the same man who sued “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss.
One observant fan quickly pinpointed Winston out of the crowd and quote-tweeted his face above a previous video of Burruss firing him.
“Now wait a d–n minute!!! So Sweet Tea and Dr. G’s wedding planner is Kandi’s former employee, Johnnie. Remember Kandi read him for filth on #RHOA (see below). He also tried to sue Kandi, along with the help of Phaedra. Atlanta is just a mess LOL #Married2Med.”
Back in 2016, Winston filed a lawsuit alleging that Burruss had failed to pay him his deserved wage for working overtime as her former assistant. He also accused Burruss and her husband, Todd Tucker, of stealing his restaurant concept for her restaurant Old Lady Gang and her stage play, “A Mother’s Love.”
The case was officially resolved in 2017 after Winston and the former Xscape singer reached a settlement agreement.
Winston was also featured in additional episodes during the ninth season of “RHOA.” In one episode specifically, he and Burruss got into a heated conversation after Winston uploaded a photo of Burruss on Instagram calling her fake.
“Why all of a sudden out the blue, especially after I done paid you your money to help us with this thing are you feeling a certain kind of way,” the 47-year-old asked.
Winston then explained that his ill feelings toward Burruss stemmed from the way she decided to “relieve” him from working for her.
He stated, “I felt that we could’ve been close enough to have a conversation.”
It is also important to note Parks is the individual who hooked Winston up with a lawyer for his case against Burruss.
It can be inferred that her intentions in helping Winston weren’t in the right place, as they came after she and Burruss were also going through a rough patch in their friendship at the time — a friendship that never got a chance to be mended due to a nasty rumor started by Parks.
After season 9, neither Parks or Winston returned to “RHOA.”
Fortunately for fans, it’s unclear if Parks and Winston will have any scenes together in next week’s episode.
Lateasha and Dr. G’s wedding is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, Nov. 26, at 9 p.m. EST only on Bravo.

On the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, “Nightmares” opens at No. 6 this week and “Angel Numbers / Ten Toes” at No. 10. “Sensational,” released Oct. 20, rises to No. 3.

#HipHopNews: Diddy Seen For The First Time Since Cassie Lawsuit
Diddy has been pictured for the first time since he settled Cassie's explosive lawsuit accusing him of years of sexual and physical abuse, and the Bad Boy founder looks despondent in the snap shots.
Diddy has taken over the headlines following news breaking about Cassie filing a lawsuit against the rap-mogul, which includes accusations of over a decade of sexual, physical and mental abuse. On Sunday (Nov. 19), Puff was photoed by paparazzi looking despondent. In the first photo, which can be seen below, Diddy appears to be at a restaurant. One photo shows him with his head in his hands. The second photo shows Diddy hunched over with his arms wrapped around his body.
Some people online have pointed out the possibility of the photos being staged as a reason to drum up sympathy for Puff.
As previously reported, on Nov. 16, Cassie filed a civil lawsuit against Diddy in New York federal court. The lawsuit alleges Diddy provided Cassie, born Casandra Ventura, with copious amounts of drugs and coerced her to have sex with numerous male prostitutes while Diddy watched at events called "freak offs" throughout their relationship from 2007-2018. The suit also claims Diddy raped Cassie and assaulted her on multiple occasions.
"After yeas of silence I am finally ready to tell my story," Cassie said in a statement. "And to speak up for myself and for the benefit of women who face violence and abuse in their relationships."
Diddy's attorney Ben Brafman vehemently denied the allegations. However, Diddy settled the lawsuit the following day.
"We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love," Diddy told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement.
Brafman has since released a statement saying Diddy's settlement is not an admission of guilt.
Susan Sarandon Dropped By Hollywood Agency After Hurting Staffers With Anti-Jewish Rant
Susan Sarandon is no longer represented by a Hollywood agency following her controversial remarks. After reportedly hurting staffers at UTA with her anti-Jewish rant, the "Dead Man Walking" actress was dropped by the talent agency.
On Tuesday, November 21, a spokesperson for UTA confirmed to a number of media outlets that they do not represent the 77-year-old Oscar-winning actress any longer. On the reason why, several sources spilled to Page Six that she "extremely hurt" some "staffers at UTA" with her comments on "frightened Jews."
A few days prior, Susan made a controversial comment on Jews living in the U.S. when she was joining a pro-Palestine rally. During the Friday, November 17 protest in New York City, she stated, "There are a lot of people that are afraid, that are afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence."
On Monday, November 20, the "Monarch" star reshared via X, formerly known as Twitter, a tweet about Pink Floyd and its outspoken frontman Roger Waters voicing their support for Palestine at their recent show. "Despite attempts by the Israeli lobby to cancel the event, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd took the stage in Uruguay, donning a Kufiyyah and advocating for an end to the Israeli genocide in Gaza," the tweet read.
Later on, Susan was criticized by many. Among them was former director of speechwriting at the Israeli Mission to the United Nations Aviva Klompas, who responded to Susan's anti-Jewish rant. In a tweet, Aviva penned, "When Susan Sarandon said that Jews 'are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country' she was saying that American Jews have it coming - that we don't deserve to live free from harassment and assault."
Meanwhile, Muslim-American journalist Asra Nomani gave Susan insight into her Muslim family's life in the U.S. Asra elaborated via X a list of the "freedoms" that her family enjoys in the country. Near the end of her tweet, she noted, "Please don't minimize the experience of Jewish Americans by sanitizing the hell that it is for Muslims living in Muslim countries and vilifying America for the life - and freedoms - she offers Muslims like my family."
Megachurch Pastor Carlton Pearson Dies at 70 After a brief Cancer Battle
*Tulsa Megachurch pastor Carlton Pearson has passed away after battling cancer. He was 70.
Pearson’s 1980s television program on Trinity Broadcasting Network became one of the most-watched shows, and he rose to fame as pastor of the 5,000-member Higher Dimensions Family Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Netflix’s 2018 “Come Sunday” biopic explored his life and controversial religious views.
A Facebook post confirms Bishop Pearson died peacefully in his sleep Sunday night.
“His melodious voice and many sermons were for many years, a source of inspiration on TBN and elsewhere,” Bishop T.D. Jakes wrote in a Facebook post. “I grew up watching him on television when I was preaching in a storefront church in West Virginia.
“I spoke with him a few short months ago upon hearing of his suffering. Even then, he was kind and jovial as possible. Though his voice was weaker, it was still radiant and resolute,” Jakes added.
“I paint and draw and I did a picture of us together and gave it to him a few weeks ago or last week,” said Gospel recording artist John P. Kee, per KTUL. “I had an amazing experience on Friday. I was talking to him on the phone and they said oh you know he might not respond. I started singing one of our favorite songs. A song called Greater. And when I finished I said I love you bishop and he shouted I love you more and it just really touched my heart. I’ll remember him forever more,” Kee added.
As reported previously, during his health battle with an “inoperable and fatal” cancerous mass, Pearson frequently posted updates to his Facebook followers, and his last speaking appearance was on Oct. 10.
“We have to grow. We have to keep on growing because that’s what we’re called to do,” the televangelist said in his final message.
“This will be one of the last times you’ll see me like this,” Bishop Pearson said to his followers on a live broadcast, L.A. Focus News reports. “I may be closing some things out, but I will never close you out in consciousness. I love you and wanted you to hear from my voice how deeply appreciative I am of who you are and that you are.”
A message on Carlton’s official Facebook page reads: “We are saddened to inform you that Bishop Carlton D’Metrius Pearson, one of the most popular and influential preachers in America and around the world, who sacrificed everything for a message of unconditional love and acceptance by God, died peacefully the night of November 19, 2023, at the age of 70, after a brief battle with cancer that had returned after first defeating it 20 years ago. He was surrounded by his family.”

Kanye West Fuels Bianca Censori Cheating Rumors After Going Ringless
It seems like Kanye West does nothing to stop the cheating speculations circulating around him and his wife Bianca Censori. Instead, the hip-hop star appears to fuel the rumors when he's spotted ditching his wedding ring during a new sighting.
In a new Instagram post, Ye could be seen posing enjoying his morning during his time in Saudi Arabia. The picture, which was shared on Saturday, November 18, featured the Yeezy designer sitting on a comfy sofa with his breakfast in front of him.
For the occasion, Ye traded his signature all-black outfit with an all-white ensemble. He flashed a smile as a woman was holding a baby so the tot could take a picture with the star.
Eagled-eyed fans, who noticed that he didn't wear his wedding ring, immediately took to the comments section to point it out. "No more ring?" one user asked, while another echoed the question, "Where's the ring?" A third commenter wrote, "Singling and mingling."
The new picture came after fans believed that Ye was cheating on Bianca, who recently returned to her native country Australia alone. The speculations started emerging after the "Donda" artist dropped his new single "Vulture", on which he brags, "I don't know who I f**ked last night, I got Alzheimer's." He also raps, "Got pregnant in the threesome, so whose baby is it? Whose baby is it?"
Upon listening to the song, fans wondered if Ye talked about his relationship with Bianca on the track. "Wonder if any of this is directed towards Bianca? Is he admitting he's cheated on her?" one fan asked. One other suggested, "I feel like after reading this in full we know he's cheated on her. Proof is in the lyrics, no?"
There seemed to be trouble in paradise between Ye and Bianca. A recent report claimed that the two were on break with a source saying, "Kanye said they've been taking a breather since mid-October and his only focus right now is the music. He's really keen to get this new record out with Ty Dolla $ign."
According to the informant, the former husband of Kim Kardashian "is a very difficult person to be around and work for, and Bianca has been one of the most patient people ever to deal with him" because "she's been all about Ye." While the father of four "has been a lot happier and more focused with her around," their "relationship has taken its toll on her a bit, with everyone having their opinion."
However, the source predicted that Bianca would "go back to him for the album launch," adding, "She loves the lifestyle, but I think it's clear her family and friends would rather she didn't. Honestly, it seems he's not that worried about it and is just all about the music at the minute."
It was also said that Bianca's loved ones staged an intervention for her. "Everyone is just glad that they finally were able to get through to Bianca," a source noted at the time. "Her friends let her know exactly how they feel and they told her that she needs to wake the f**k up."
An insider told the news outlet that Bianca "knows that she has shut out those close to her and she is also starting to see through the smoky mirrors of her marriage." She's allegedly also "aware of Kanye's controlling ways and she is starting to see things from an outside perspective."
Billy Porter details why he left “very homophobic” music industry
Billy Porter opened up about feeling unwelcome in the music industry at the beginning of his career, especially during one particular experience involving CΓ©line Dion.
In honor of his new album Black Mona Lisa, the recipient of Vulture's honorary Master of Culture degree talked about the homophobia he faced after winning Star Search in 1992.
"It was traumatizing," Porter said while detailing the making of his 1997 self-titled debut, which was "all about the smoke and mirrors of trying to make the world think I was straight, that I was masculine enough to exist."
"My voice, my singing voice, had been my savior. It was what allowed me to dream beyond my circumstance, and then for the first time in my life, my voice didn’t matter," he continued, "All they were concerned about was who I was fucking behind closed doors on my own private time."
That said, the young Porter believed he should still listen to his label's advice, which turned him into someone he didn't recognize. And this continued until the label decided to give his song "Love Is On The Way" to Dion, who went on to re-record it for the blockbuster film, The First Wives Club.
"They gave it right over to her! Same producer produced it for her. I was like, 'I did not come here to be a demo singer for fucking Celine Dion! I’m done!,'" Porter continued, before clarifying that he "loves" Dion and this wasn't about "My Heart Will Go On" singer.
"It’s about the systems of oppression that mute and dismiss our contribution to the world," he explained, "It happened in that moment, and I said, 'I’m done. If this is all the music business has to offer me, I’m done. She can have it, y’all can have it, I’m out.'”
So for the next two decades, the multitalented artist decided to focus on his acting career, eventually rising to stardom with his Tony-winning performance in the "Kinky Boots" musical, which was composed by '80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper. He then went on to become a bonafide A-lister after starring in Pose, FX Network's critically acclaimed drama about N.Y.C.'s underground ballroom community.
After independently releasing three records, Porter went on to say he had "no intention of coming back to the music industry in a mainstream way" until he recorded Black Mona Lisa for Republic Records, under the condition that he would be able to make "mainstream pop on my Black f*****y-ass terms."
"Yes! You can see it now!," Porter concluded. "She free, bitch!"
Melissa Barrera Has Been Fired From SCREAM VII; Spyglass Releases Statement
Scream VI star Melissa Barrera will not be returning for the upcoming seventh instalment in the long-running slasher franchise.
Initial reports indicated that the actress, who played original Ghostface Billy Loomis' daughter Sam Carpenter in the last two movies, was fired from her role for sharing "anti-Semitic" comments on social media, but her posts didn't seem to go any further than those shared by multiple other actors who have shown their support for Palestine and condemned Israel's actions in Gaza.
Spyglass Media Group saw things differently, however.
The studio released a statement explaining why they decided to drop Barrera from the next Scream movie, citing "rhetoric that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
“Spyglass stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
In addition, filmmaker Christopher Landon, who took the reins of Scream VII from the previous movies' directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, shared the following Tweet... which he has since deleted.
"This is my statement: [Broken heart emoji] Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make."
The studio has received a lot of backlash for this, as Barrera's fans (along with many other people) simply don't believe her comments crossed any lines.
It'll be interesting to see if any of her cast-mates will stand in solidarity with the actress.
Will Spyglass now attempt to bring Neve Campbell back into the fold, perhaps? The former star of the franchise decided not to reprise the role of Sidney Prescot for the most recent film, after revealing that she was unhappy with what she was offered to return.
Campbell spoke about watching Scream VI for the first time during a recent appearance at Monster-Mania Con.
“I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors. I don’t wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It’s not like I’m sitting in my house going, ‘I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn’t do well.’ I care about all the people involved.”
“There’s someone at the top who only thinks about money and that’s their prerogative,” she added.
3-year-old boy fatally shoots his 2-year-old brother after finding gun in mother's purse
A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old brother after finding a gun in their mom’s purse in Gary, Indiana.
According to WLS-TV, the tragic incident happened Friday (Nov. 17) right before 7:30 p.m. Officers were sent to a local hospital, where the mom drove the wounded toddler and he later died of his injury. Cops said they were told that the 3-year-old found the gun after the mom left a bedroom in their home on Georgia Street. Although the incident is still being investigated by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, the Lake County Coroner’s Office ruled the death as an accident. No charges were filed as of today (Nov. 20).
In a joint message, Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince and Gary Police Chief Anthony Titus expressed their griefs and urged gun-owning residents to secure their firearms, especially around kids. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the 2-year-old child who was so tragically taken from our community,” the statement began. “We understand nothing we say will ease the pain these tragedies cause in our community. This case is under investigation, but it’s a difficult reminder of the responsibility we all have as adults in properly securing any firearms and devices that may become weapons in the hands of innocent children.”
The statement included that the police department will be giving out free gun locks. “Adults must become fully responsible when in possession of all firearms. Clearly, we must do more to protect our community members from accidents like these, and we are going to act now. We have free gun locks available at our Gary Police Department, 555 Polk St., and we are ordering many more. We will determine the best way to issue these free and potentially life-saving devices throughout our community,” it read.
Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl Redemption Matchup Delivers Largest ‘Monday Night Football’
The Philadelphia Eagles sought redemption on Monday night with a Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs — and they got it.
The Eagles’ 21-17 victory over the Chiefs drew 28.96M viewers across ABC and ESPN, marking the largest audience for Monday Night Football in 27 years, since the Packers-Cowboys matchup in November 1996 managed more than 31M viewers.
The audience significantly outpaced the previous record for MNF since it began simulcasting on ESPN, which was this season’s Week 1 Bill-Jets game’s 22.67M viewers.
The second-largest audience of the week came in the NFL national window on CBS, which featured the Jets-Bills in most markets. That window drew nearly 21M viewers, which is actually a decline over Week 10 to become the smallest NFL national window audience since Week 1.
CBS saw declines across its entire doubleheader, with the earlier window managing 12.75M. The network’s last doubleheader in Week 8 drew nearly 14M for the early matchup.
NBC posted a strong audience with 18.45M tuning in for the Vikings-Broncos game. That’s up week-over-week and year-over-year for the network. Fox’s singleheader, which broadcast the Panthers-Cowboys in a majority of markets, also eked out over 18M viewers.
Prime Video is also claiming a “W” for its presentation of the Bengals-Ravens Thursday Night Football matchup. With 12.92M viewers, the game managed the franchise’s largest average audience in five weeks, up 25% over last season’s comparable game and 35% over last week’s TNF delivery.
DDG Thanks Fans For Bringing Down Nail Salon After It Allegedly Kicked Out Halle Bailey
DDG is making use of his platform to defend his girlfriend Halle Bailey against alleged racism. The YouTuber has enlisted his fans to help bring down a nail salon, which allegedly kicked out the actress/singer for being black.
On Tuesday, November 21, the 26-year-old took to his account on X, formerly known as Twitter, to blast the nail salon, Perfect Nails. He claimed, "This place is racist towards black people.. they kicked my girlfriend out while doing her nails.."
To exact revenge on the nail salon for its alleged treatment to his girlfriend, DDG asked his followers to leave negative reviews on the salon's profile on yelp.com. "please give them a 1 star.. they don't deserve business..," so he implored.
Within minutes, the nail salon's reviews section was inundated with comments accusing it of being "rude" and "disrespectful" towards its clients. "Horrible place! Very racist workers and there extremely rude to the customers. Disgusting about this place! Please never go here!!" read one comment, which gave the place 1 star.
It's unclear if those who left the negative reviews really had bad experience at the nail salon, but they did help bring it down. The nail salon quickly went from a 4 1/2 star to a 2 1/2, forcing the owner to temporarily close down the establishment.
In a follow-up tweet, DDG later thanked his fans for helping him achieve his goal. "good job thank you," he wrote.
DDG thanked fans after they wrote negative reviews about an allegedly racist nail salon.
It's unclear how the nail salon treated Halle that sparked DDG's anger as the "Angel" songstress, who has been rumored to be expecting her first child with her boyfriend, has remained mum on the alleged racist treatment she received.
The 23-year-old recently clapped back at a fan who inquired about her pregnancy rumors. After one individual pointed out her "pregnancy nose," she said in a video posted on her Snapchat Story, "Listen, if I see one more person say something about my nose one more time, it's gonna be hell to pay." She added, "And you know why? 'Cause I am black. I love my nose. [What are you] concerned about my nose for? Leave me the hell alone!"

Israel Approves Hostage Deal with Hamas – And A PAUSE in Fighting!
Israel’s cabinet has approved a deal that would see the release of at least 50 hostages – women and children – from Gaza, according to an Israeli government statement, in what is expected to result in the first sustained pause in fighting and major de-escalator step since Israel’s war with Hamas began.
The freeing of the hostages will come in exchange for a four-day truce in Israel’s air and ground campaign in Gaza, the statement said. It made no mention of the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, though it is understood this is also a key part of the deal.
The deal was approved by the Israeli cabinet by a significant majority, a government source told CNN.
A more detailed statement will be sent to families of the hostages later today, the statement added.
There are 239 hostages being held captive in Gaza, including foreign nationals from 26 countries, according to figures from the Israeli military.
The mass abductions took place on October 7, when Hamas militants struck across the border in coordinated attacks killing around 1,200 people – the largest such attack on Israel since the country’s founding in 1948.
Many of the hostages were seized at gunpoint during Hamas’ rampage of violence through border communities near the Gaza Strip and the nearby Nova music festival.
Israel responded to the attacks by imposing a blockade on Gaza that cut off supplies of food, water, medicines, and fuel, and launched a relentless air and ground assault that has plunged the enclave into a dire humanitarian crisis.
More than 12,000 people have died in Gaza since October 7, according to the Hamas-run government’s press office.
Just a handful of hostages have been released prior to the deal. On October 20, two Americans – Judith Tai Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter Natalie Raanan – were freed on humanitarian grounds following negotiations between Qatar and Hamas.
Soon after, two Israeli women, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, were also released.
Lifshitz said she “went through hell,” describing being snatched from her home and driven off on a motorbike before being taken to a network of tunnels.
The total number of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails is approximately 8,300, according to Qadura Fares, the head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, a non-governmental organization.
Of those 8,300, more than 3,000 are being held in what Israel calls “administrative detention,” which means they are being held without knowing the charges against them or an ongoing legal process.
This is a developing story
