Arsema Thomas (she/they) is a joy to be around. On the day of their Cosmopolitan cover shoot, the 28-year-old is comfortable in front of the camera, polite to everyone on set, and assured in her style choices. So, it’s hard to believe the actor, who is about to become a household name in the hotly anticipated prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, was full of self-doubt while playing the role of a young Lady Agatha Danbury.
“Agatha, when you meet her, is at a stage that personally and emotionally I'm not,” Thomas admits during our virtual interview, referencing the character’s wisdom and ferocity. “The challenge as an actor is to say words with such organic confidence that the audience believe the character’s strength. I think for anybody who’s insecure, it’s difficult to force that when you don’t feel it. I’m still growing that part of me.”
The eldest child of two diplomats, Thomas relocated from Atlanta, Georgia, to Kampala, Uganda, at two weeks old. A self-described class clown, she went on to study a bachelor’s degree in biophysics, as well as a health policy masters at Yale, where they began to feel drawn to the drama department.
“Something physical happened in my body when I was next to it or even heard anything about it,” Thomas says. “So, I started auditioning for random student films, eventually joining a community theatre.” From there, they attended drama school in Paris, later moving to London for training at the prestigious institutes of RADA and LAMDA. “That's when I realised, ‘Okay, this is for me. I like it’.”
A true Gemini, as well as studying multiple disciplines and landing mainstream acting roles, Thomas is an avid activist, who doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations. “It’s the one thing you can fight for and know you’re on the right side [of history],” Thomas says, her conviction infectious. “The exact point of racism is to strip people of their humanness and uniqueness. When I recognised that, it became a necessity to make [activism] part of whatever I do for the rest of my life, because it fulfils me.”

A quick glance at Thomas’s Instagram page reveals copious liberatory thinkers, writers and activists, including Fred Hampton of the civil rights group Black Panthers, and Nigerian feminist poet, Ijeoma Umebinyuo. During filming for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Thomas was reading the famous biography of Black liberation revolutionary, Assata Shakur, and two of Black feminist bell hooks’ most famous books, ‘Ain’t I a Woman’ and ‘All About Love’. “It was a way of getting me into this character,” they say. “For Agatha Danbury, [hooks’ thoughts are] similar to a lot of what is going through her mind personally. There is a beauty in reading a Black woman's optimism about the world.”

#RHOA: Kenya Moore Admits She's Still 'a Little Afraid' of Falling in Love amid 2-Year Divorce
Kenya Moore is opening up about dating amid her divorce from ex Marc Daly.
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, 52, tells PEOPLE that she is slowly getting back into the dating game.
"I'm focusing on myself now, which includes being able to go out and date," she shares. "Do I want to fall in love and have a serious relationship? I'm a little afraid of that."
"I want to be able to date and I don't want to move too fast with anybody," she adds. "So that's why I think it's nice to have someone you really like, but it's also nice to have options so you can just not feel there's a pressure for it to become something."
Moore admits she is enjoying meeting new people after filing for divorce from Daly in May 2021.
"It's like you have a nice dinner or meet someone that's really cool and you guys, it doesn't have to be love," she says. "It could just be ... someone who just makes you feel alive."
She continues of dating again, "I didn't know I could laugh like this again. I didn't know I could feel sexy. I didn't know I could go be that girl again that changes her clothes three times before going out on a date. I was never thinking, Wait, what now is this skirt? What message is this sending? It's really interesting to revisit all of that."
Moore remains hopeful she'll find love again, telling PEOPLE: "I think it will present itself when it's time, but I just don't want to ever feel like so many people feel when they're single and they're of a certain age ... that pressure that society puts on you or other people put on you."
She affirms, "I just feel like now I feel more in control [of my life].... But it's like, Ah, if it's out there, it's out there. If it's not, it will come."
That said, there are still plenty of growing pains in store not only for the former Miss USA, but also for several of her past and present RHOA castmates who are going through divorce, including Cynthia Bailey, Eva Marcille and Drew Sidora
Moore calls her costars' public breakups "really sad," while noting that being a public figure brings a lot of issues out into the light.
"Sometimes you can be in denial and just kind of float through it or just not really live through it, but Housewives forces you to live through it," she explains of the microscope of reality TV fametp.
One of those realities for Moore is continuing the process of finalizing her divorce with Daly, 52. She says the pair have yet to "come to an agreement" after mediation last week.
"We have a date coming up and if that does not work, then it will end up being a continuance for the trial because they've already kind of warned us that they want to do a continuance, meaning [we'd have to] push that off," she shares. "And I'm just like, What do I have to do?"
She adds that it seems "so unfair that one party can dictate how long things go."

The Weeknd joins forces with Mike Dean for the latter’s new album 4:23.
The project, which The Weeknd co-executive produced, features 13 tracks, of which The Weeknd’s vocals are heard on four–“Artificial Intelligence,” “Defame Moi,” “More Coke!!” and “Emotionless.”
The famed producer revealed that he and The Weeknd recorded the songs in the past week following Coachella where the Canadian superstar joined Metro Boomin on stage.
The Weeknd has also been working with Dean on music for his HBO series “The Idol,” including his latest single “Double Fantasy” with Future. The first part of the soundtrack, The Idol, Vol. 1, is set to arrive alongside the show.

Timbaland’s dream collaboration is coming to life, thanks to AI. The super-producer has used artificial intelligence technology to produce a song for The Notorious B.I.G. He shared the result, which features AI-crafted Biggie lyrics over an original Timbaland beat.
The Brooklyn rap icon can be heard rapping about other slain rappers including Pop Smoke, Young Dolph, and Nipsey Hussle on his computer-generated verse.
“I always wanted to work with Big and I never got a chance to until today. It came out right,” said Timbaland while previewing the song.
The collaboration drew a mixed reaction from fans. “Sounds dope but dont feel right,” one person wrote on Instagram, while another added, “Haha. Literally life after death.”
As it rises in popularity, AI has become controversial among artists. Drake weighed in following an AI-crafted version of himself covering Ice Spice’s “Munch (Feelin’ U).” “This is the final straw AI,” he joked.
An AI-generated collaboration between Drake and The Weeknd called “Heart on My Sleeve” went viral on TikTok and Spotify before Universal Music Group had it removed from streaming platforms.
Timbaland acknowledged the polarizing nature of AI and claimed he’s come up with a solution. “It’s gon’ be beneficial to everybody,” he said without sharing details.
Record labels are trying to stop AI-generated songs and have been asking major streaming services to block AI companies from accessing their catalogs.
Khalid recently shared his thoughts on AI as it infiltrates the music industry. “I have mixed feelings about it. I feel like AI is definitely going to be a helpful tool and it’s one of those things that you can’t escape,” he told TMZ. “Hopefully, I get to still have my job for a long time.”
#RIP: Former 3-time U.S. Olympic medalist Tori Bowie dead at the age of 32
Tori Bowie, a three-time United States Olympic medalist and world champion sprinter, died at the age of 32, her management company announced Wednesday. Bowie's agent, Kimberley Holland, told CNN that Bowie was found dead in her home in Florida. The cause of her death is not yet known.
"We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister," Icon Management wrote in a Twitter post. "Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family and friends."
Bowie was born and grew up in Sand Hill, Mississippi, and won two state high school championships in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the long jump, and three state titles in the 4×100 relay.
She racked up a lot of accolades in a very short time during her 20s as well, beginning with two NCAA long jump championships during her time at Southern Mississippi in outdoor and indoor track in 2021. Bowie won all three of her Olympic medals in 2016 at the Rio Games after she took silver in the 100-meter dash, bronze in the 200-meter dash and gold as the anchor for the 4x100 relay alongside Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix and English Gardner.
Bowie also won the 100-meter dash and 4x100 relay at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London. Two years earlier, she won bronze in the 100-meter dash at the 2015 championships in Beijing. She finished fourth in long jump at the 2019 World Championships in Qatar.
Other entities and athletes in the sport offered their condolences for the loss of a U.S. Olympian.
Ed Sheeran wins 'Let's Get It On' copyright infringement case for 'Thinking Out Loud'
A New York jury sided with Ed Sheeran on Thursday, finding that he did not plagiarize Marvin Gaye's classic song "Let's Get It On."
The trial concluded after a jury first met on April 24. Gaye collaborator Ed Townsend's family sued the "Shape of You" singer for copyright infringement in 2016, claiming that his "Thinking Out Loud" stole "the heart” from Gaye's song by using "melodic, harmonic and rhythmic compositions” that are “substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition” to Gaye's sensual number.
On the third day of the weeklong trial, the plaintiff's legal team presented the jury with a video of Sheeran performing a mashup of “Thinking Out Loud” and “Let’s Get It On” in concert. While attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Townsend family, called the clip "a smoking gun," Sheeran denied he stole any musical element from Gaye.
The singer also reportedly got heated during the trial and sparred with Keisha Rice, another attorney who represented the Townsend family.
According to the Associated Press, Sheeran picked up his guitar on the fourth day of the trial and performed a few words from "Thinking Out Loud." At the behest of his lawyer Ilene Farkas, Sheeran explained the writing process behind the song.
He said writing a song was second nature, and he "used his own version of phonetics" to quickly create songs. After giving a sample of his singing, Sheeran said "and then words fall in."
Then he turned to the jury and said, "I’m not the world’s most talented guitar player."
On Monday the singer made a dramatic vow from the witness stand.
While he was testifying, Farkas asked what would happen if the plaintiffs win ownership over the chord progression in question.
“If that happens, I’m done — I’m stopping,” said Sheeran, 32, appearing to vow he would quit music if he loses, according to the New York Post. “I find it really insulting to work my whole life as a singer-songwriter and diminish it.”
After Thursday's verdict, it seems that won't be happening anytime soon. He will release his new album "Subtract" on Thursday at 9 p.m. Pacific.
Amid the legal battle, Sheeran also announced that he'll be hitting the road soon. On social media the singer revealed that his Subtract tour will launch May 19 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fla.
Sheeran is set to perform at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sept. 22 after stops in Oakland, Vancouver and Seattle.
Jamie Foxx Breaks Silence For First Time Since Hospitalization
Jamie Foxx remains in the hospital more than three weeks after a medical emergency.
Those close to the Oscar winner are reportedly asking for prayers and well wishes as he recovers. According to TMZ, sources close to Foxx are saying “Pray for Jamie.”
His exact condition remains unknown and his family is keeping details surrounding his hospitalization private.
On April 12, his daughter, Corinne, announced that her father had suffered a “medical complication” and was recovering at an Atlanta hospital.
“We wanted to share that, my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday,” read a statement on behalf of the Foxx Family, which was posted on Corinne’s Instagram. “Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery.”
It continues, “We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for privacy during this time.”
Foxx’s condition was serious enough that some of his family flew in from out of town to visit him in the hospital. He was reportedly awake and communicating at the time.
Foxx had been in Atlanta filming his Netflix comedy Back in Action with Cameron Diaz and Glenn Close when he became ill. A stunt double and body double have been seen filling in for him on set.
The 55-year-old actor also hosted the FOX musical game show “Beat Shazam,” which was slated to begin production shortly after he was hospitalized. Filming started today with Nick Cannon as replacement host. His daughter, who served as DJ, will also not be on the show and remains by her father’s side.
Foxx continues to receive support from his peers including Taraji P. Henson. “We are praying for you and your family! #GODIS,” she wrote.
Jamie Foxx is breaking his silence following today’s report. In a message posted on his Instagram account, he thanked everyone for their support.

Kanye West has quietly unveiled his Yeezy Season 10 collection with a private showing in Los Angeles on Monday (May 1). In the newly surfaced footage of the YZY FREE fashion show, models are seen walking the runway while holding candles as Frank Ocean’s “Self Control” soundtracked the event held inside of a warehouse.

Mother reveals why suspected Atlanta mass shooter Deion Patterson was upset before He started shooting
The mother of the man accused of shooting five people in midtown Atlanta said he was angry that doctors wouldn’t give him Ativan, an anti-anxiety drug.
Deion Patterson, 24, is accused of opening fire in the waiting room of a Northside Hospital medical office, killing one woman and wounding four others.
Channel 2′s Sophia Choi spoke to Patterson’s mother off-camera after the shooting. She told Choi that doctors would not give her son the tranquilizer, which treats anxiety but can also be addictive.
Channel 2 Action News learned that Patterson was a Coast Guardsman but had been discharged in January. It’s unclear why he was released.
Police said he was only in the medical office for two minutes before he opened fire.
Witnesses describe seeing horrific scene in elevator after midtown Atlanta mass shooting
Surveillance video from nearby businesses showed Patterson running from the medical office.
Police said Patterson ran from the medical office after the shooting and stole a truck that was running and empty at a nearby Shell station.
The truck was found at a parking garage by the Battery Atlanta in Cobb County. After he hid in a pool house at a Cobb County apartment complex, Patterson was arrested hours later. The video shows him surrender to officers before being handcuffed.
The woman who was killed has been identified as 39-year-old Amy St. Pierre, who was employed at the U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control.
The other four victims, three of whom remain in critical condition, have not been identified.
Patterson has been charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
NYC Subway Chokehold Death Ruled a Homicide, As Groups Demand Justice for Jordan Neely
The medical examiner confirmed that the chokehold to Jordan Neely is what killed him. NBC New York’s Checkey Beckford reports.
The death of a homeless man who allegedly had threatened passengers aboard a New York City subway and was put into a chokehold by one of the riders has been deemed a homicide, according to the medical examiner.
Investigators had said they were waiting on the report to determine whether or not it was the chokehold that killed 30-year-old Jordan Neely at the Broadway-Lafayette station Monday afternoon. However, no charges have yet been filed against the 24-year-old passenger who put Neely in headlock.
Some are now calling for justice for Neely, who was homeless and struggled with mental illness, and the the person who was initially hailed as a good Samaritan to be arrested.
No charges have been filed against the passenger who put the man in the headlock at the Broadway-Lafayette station on Monday, after the man had threatened passengers. NBC New York's Myles Miller reports.
"What we're seeing is people deputizing themselves and not having a compassionate approach to mental health and homelessness," said one of the speakers at a rally — held at the same station where the altercation occurred, and where EMS performed CPR on Neely after a witness said he was restrained for 15 minutes.
The NYPD said it was called to the NoHo station around 2:25 p.m. after a report of a physical fight in a northbound F train.
Witnesses and law enforcement sources said Neely got on the train and started acting very aggressively toward other riders, threatening to harm them. Police sources told NBC New York that Neely told riders on the train that he wanted food, that he wasn't taking no for an answer, and that he would hurt anyone on the train.
"The man got on the subway car and began to say a somewhat aggressive speech, saying he was hungry, he was thirsty, that he didn't care about anything, he didn't care about going to jail, he didn't care that he gets a big life sentence," said Juan Alberto Vazquez, who was in the subway car and recording part of what happened afterward. "That 'It doesn't even matter if I died.'"
Vazquez said he was scared, and believes others on the train were as well. It was then that a 24-year-old rider came up behind Neely and put him in a chokehold, holding him on the ground. Two other men stood over them and also helped subdue him, video showed.
"If there was fear, the people who...were there where he separated everything, moved from their place. I stayed sitting in my place because it was a little further away, but obviously in those moments, well, one feels fear. One thinks he may be armed," Vazquez said.
He said that the chokehold lasted about 15 minutes as they waited for police to respond, and it was held even as the train stopped at the subway station and the doors opened. That's when Vazquez said most of the people who were inside the train car left, with a few exceptions, including the three who had been working to subdue Neely.
Neely was unconscious on the car floor when officers arrived, and died at the scene.
Vazquez said no one thought the man would die, even after he went limp.
"I think no one though he was in a risky situation because he was defending himself all the time, all the time he moved, he tried to remove his arm," said Vazquez. "Then when they had it on his side, he kept kicking, so we thought that's him defending himself."
One person in the video of the incident can be heard questioning whether Neely had been fatally injured, pointing out that defecation is a sign that he had died. Vazquez said he was conflicted over whether he thought the rider who subdued Neely went too far.
"It's difficult, it's a very big dilemma. And after two days, I still think it's complicated. It's difficult to judge," said Vazquez.
The 24-year-old who delivered the chokehold was questioned and later released, the NYPD said. He has not yet been charged, and it was not clear if he would face charges.
The Manhattan district attorney's office is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident, saying in a statement "we will review the Medical Examiner's report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records."
Mayor Eric Adams did not weigh in on the matter, as a spokesperson said that "any loss of life is tragic. There's a lot we don't know about what happened here," adding that they were aware there were "serious mental health issues in play here."
In a TV interview later Wednesday, Adams said he would wait for investigators to decide.
"I was a former transit officer, and I responded to many jobs where you had a passenger assisting somewhat. So we can't blanketly say what a passenger should or shouldn't do in a situation like that," the mayor said.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said video of the incident was "deeply disturbing, and it causes a lot of fear in people, and actually the mayor and I am working so hard to restore that sense of safety."
"The way detectives have to look at this case is, what would a reasonable person do and what would a reasonable person be expected to do," said former NYPD Chief of Department Terry Monahan.
NBC New York has reached out to the 24-year-old multiple times, but he has declined to comment. Several reports stated that he is a former Marine — which a former NYC prosecutor said could hurt a self-defense claim.
"If he knew and was trained to use a chokehold, he would be no different than the training a police officer would get," said former Manhattan prosecutor Michael Bachner. "The argument is going to be that he acted in a way that he should have known could result in death."
Law enforcement sources with knowledge of the case said Neely had a lengthy criminal history, with charges including assault and disorderly conduct. But those who knew of him said Neely was a well-known Michael Jackson impersonator. Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine noted he had seen Neely perform many times, and always made people smile.
Weight Loss Company Jenny Craig Is Closing Its Doors
Jenny Craig, the once-popular weight loss company, is closing its centers across the United States and Canada due to an inability to secure additional financing.
The company informed its employees of the decision in an email sent on Tuesday. Hourly center employees’ last day was Tuesday, while the last day for corporate and salaried field employees is scheduled for Friday.
NBC News obtained a letter titled “Jenny Craig Company Transition FAQs,” which stated that the company had been undergoing a sales process for the past few months and that it would be “winding down physical operations.”
Although the exact number of employees affected is unclear, Jenny Craig has encouraged its staff to seek other employment.
Jenny Craig said in a statement to NBC News that the company is entering a new phase in its business to adapt to the evolving needs of modern consumers. The company is shifting from a brick-and-mortar retail business to an e-commerce-driven model.
Like many other companies, Jenny Craig promises to provide more information about its plans in the upcoming weeks as they are finalized.

Sherri Shepherd said she wanted to "pay it forward" after Rosie O’Donnell revealed The View co-hosts' salaries when she joined the ABC talk show in 2007
Sherri Shepherd knows the importance of paying it forward.
On the latest episode of Sherri, Sunny Hostin revealed that the 56-year-old daytime television show host helped her to get a better salary when joining The View full-time in 2016.
"I don't even know if you remember this, but when I signed my deal sheet, you gave me a call," Hostin, 54, told Shepherd, who co-hosted the ABC talk show from 2007 to 2014. "I don't know how you got my number... and you were like, 'I heard you're coming on the show.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I'm joining the show.'"
She added: "She was like, 'Did they give you a car stipend?' I was like, 'No'... and I was like, 'Let me get my deal sheet out.' And you basically went over your salary for the entire time you were there and you also gave me Jenny McCarthy's salary."
Hostin shared that Shepherd "got me paid," adding, "You gave me everyone's salaries and I went back to my agent and I was like, 'You did not get me enough money.'"
Shepherd then credited her former View co-host Rosie O'Donnell with giving her the idea to share her salary.
"Rosie O'Donnell gave me everybody's salaries and hers, and you gotta pay it forward," she said. "You gotta stick together!"
Back in 2018, Shepherd revealed to PEOPLE that she would have had a completely different salary on The View without the guidance of the comedian, 61.
"I tell people what I make, if you're doing a talk show … because Rosie O'Donnell did it for me," Shepherd said at the time. "She told me what she made so I would know how to go in and negotiate. If Rosie O'Donnell had not told me what her salary was, I would've gotten something so low. I'm not gonna lie, I made a lot of money on The View."
She continued, "So when people do talk shows and they come to me, I say, 'This is what I made, this is what you need to ask for, this is what they will do,' because otherwise you don't know. … Nobody shares, and as women, we have to do that."
‘Bad Boys 4’: Tasha Smith to Replace Theresa Randle as Wife of Martin Lawrence’s Character
Tasha Smith will join Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in the latest installment of Sony Pictures’ “Bad Boys” franchise.
In “Bad Boys 4,” Smith will play Theresa, Marcus Burnett’s (Lawrence) loving and devoted wife, a role previously inhabited by Theresa Randle in the first three “Bad Boys” films. Plot details for “Bad Boys 4” have been kept under wraps.
Smith is best known for her roles as Carol in the drama series “Empire,” Ronnie Boyce in HBO’s Emmy-winning series “The Corner” and Angela in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” She has also directed episodes of “Our Kind of People,” “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Bel-Air.”

The “Bad Boys” series stars Will Smith and Lawrence as Miami-Dade detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett. The fourth film also features Paola Núnez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig and “Euphoria’s” Eric Dane.
The original “Bad Boys” earned $141 million at the global box office, while the 2003 sequel “Bad Boys II” totaled $273 million. “Bad Boys for Life” outgrossed its predecessors with a combined $426.5 million.
Following the release of the 2020 threequel, it was quickly announced that Sony Pictures was developing “Bad Boys 4.” Will Smith and Lawrence teased the film in January with a reunion video posted to social media with the caption: “IT’S ABOUT THAT TIME!”
At this year’s CinemaCon, both Will Smith and Lawrence expressed their excitement for the film, revealing that they were roughly four weeks into filming the movie.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah return to direct “Bad Boys 4″ with a script written by Chris Bremner. Jerry Bruckheimer, Will Smith and Doug Belgrad are producers, while Lawrence, Chad Oman, Mike Stenson, Jon None, James Lassiter and Barry Waldman executive produce.
Jackson Mahomes, Younger Brother Of Patrick Mahomes, Arrested For Aggravated Sexual Battery
Jackson Mahomes, the 22-year-old brother of superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has been arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery and a fourth count of battery.
KCTV-5 says the younger Mahomes, a social media influencer, was booked into Johnson County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
The owner of a restaurant in Overlakr Pak restaurant states Jackson Mahomes assaulted the owner and pushed a waiter in separate incidents. The incident happened on Feb. 25, 2023, at Aspents Restaurant and Bar Lounge in Overland Park.
In a video online, Mahomes has been seen kissing the 40-year-old owner. Mahomes’ lawyer released a statement combatting the claims against Mahomes.
“We have provided law enforcement with the tools and evidence they need to evaluate the claims against Jackson. Every interaction between people needs to be placed in the proper context. Releasing a short clip of any video does not provide proper context. We have faith in the process and look forward to a swift resolution of the matter.”
10 Charges Dropped Against Trey Songz In Bowling Alley Attack, Singer Must Take 12 Anger Management Courses
Trey Songz will no longer be facing charges for punching a woman at a bowling alley last year since prosecutors have dismissed the most serious accusations against him.
On Tuesday, 10 of the original charges were dismissed against Songz, including assault and aggravated harassment, after he pleaded guilty to one disorderly conduct violation in connection to the incident.
According to TMZ, Trey will be required to complete 12 anger management courses by August.
However, sources say that the singer has already started the courses.
In October, it was reported that Trey punched a woman repeatedly in the face and dragged her by the hair in a NY bowling alley bathroom.
Trey was also accused of punching a man in the eye but then turned himself in to the police.
Mitchell Schuster, Trey’s attorney, said, “We appreciate the New York law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office for their comprehensive investigation and careful consideration of all evidence, which ultimately confirmed what we had known all along and resulted in the District Attorney’s office choosing not to pursue any of the original charges against our client.”
He continues, “With each and every one of the ten original charges now dismissed by operation of law, Trey looks forward to putting this matter behind him.”
Four Proud Boys members found guilty of seditious conspiracy
Four members of the far-right Proud Boys have been found guilty of seditious conspiracy by a jury in Washington, DC, for their roles to forcibly prevent the peaceful transfer of power from then-President Donald Trump to Joe Biden after the 2020 election.
Defendants Enrique Tarrio – the Proud Boys longtime chairman – Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl and Dominic Pezzola faced a range of charges, including three separate conspiracy charges, obstructing the Electoral College vote and tampering with evidence.
The guilty verdict marks the third time that prosecutors have secured convictions for seditious conspiracy in the Justice Department’s historic prosecution of those who breached the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
All five defendants were found guilty of other charges related to January 6, including: Obstruction of an official proceeding; Conspiracy to prevent an officer from discharging any duties; Obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder; and Destruction of government property and aiding and abetting.
The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the seditious conspiracy charge against Pezzola. Unlike the other defendants in this trial, Pezzola is not alleged to have a leadership position in the organization and was inactive in Proud Boys group chats.
The jury also did not reach a verdict with regards to some defendants on charges of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers as well as destruction of government property and aiding and abetting.
The jury has returned to deliberations on those counts. Defense lawyers declined to comment after the partial verdict was read.
In court, as each juror was polled, Tarrio – dressed in a three-piece suit – peered over the desk, straining his neck to watch the jury. Rehl shook his head as he was convicted of seditious conspiracy while the others sat still in their chairs.
After the jurors left, several defendants and attorneys shook hands, hugged, and exchanged brief words. Family for the defendants cried together in a hallway outside the courtroom.
Tarrio verdict
The conviction of Tarrio is especially significant, even though he was not in Washington on January 6. According to the indictment, the Proud Boys leader helped to create a command structure within the Proud Boys in the lead up to January 6.
Text and Signal messages highlighted in the indictment suggest that Tarrio was preparing for a “revolution,” and reviewed documents that set forth a plan to occupy a few “crucial buildings” in Washington, including House and Senate office buildings around the Capitol.
Tarrio was arrested on January 4 for bringing high-capacity rifle magazines to DC and ordered to leave the city.
During the trial, using messages and videos posted by the defendants and other members of the group, prosecutors laid out the case that the Proud Boys, animated by Trump and his election lies after the 2020 defeat, began calling for violence and revolution against the incoming Biden presidency.
Members of the group saw Biden and others on the left as a threat to the country, according to prosecutors, and messaged one another about the need for “war,” “revolution,” and firing squads for traitors.
On January 6, 2021, prosecutors said, many of the defendants didn’t attend Trump’s speech that day but instead began a march to the Capitol.
Proud Boys were at the front lines of the mob on Capitol grounds and were there when the first barriers were breached. Prosecutors have alleged that leaders of the group riled members up and communicated with them, through hand signals, to move ahead.
After rioters had arrived at Senate wing doors of the Capitol building, Pezzola used a police riot shield he stole during the attack to break open a window, prosecutors said, which rioters entered the Capitol through.
Defense attorneys have argued that their clients never had a plan to storm the Capitol and stop the electoral college vote that day. The messages and videos show nothing more than stupid, vulgar rhetoric, defense attorneys said, hardly a seditious plot against the US government.
Often teetering into disarray with legal battles, evidentiary disputes, sealed hearings, countless calls for a mistrial and several shouting matches with the judge, the trial concluded Tuesday with the final closing arguments from defense counsel and federal prosecutors.
During the trial, jurors listened to testimony from multiple officers who defended the Capitol on January 6 as well as FBI agents who investigated the Proud Boys and testimony from several Proud Boys members including two of the defendants, none of whom said there was ever a specific plan to take the Capitol.
The countless delays, brought on by newly unveiled evidence and informants, a juror who believed they were being followed, and internecine squabbles among attorneys pushed a trial originally estimated to last five to seven weeks to stretch across four months.
