#MAGFAB: Method Man for Essence Magazine (Digital), Speaks On His Acting Career: 'Take Me Seriously, Not Lightly'

Thirty years in the entertainment industry, Method Man wants nothing more than to be taken seriously. After gaining fame as a rapper with Wu-Tang Clan beginning in 1992, Method Man, born Clifford Smith Jr., has made what he describes as “a hell of a transition” to an actor — and an acclaimed one at that

In 2021, Meth, as he is often affectionately referred to, won an NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Davis Maclean on the Starz spin-off Power Book II: Ghost. He also has a recurring guest starring role in the Epix series Godfather of Harlem. As our digital cover star for February, Method Man talked to us about the work he put in to show the powers that be he had the acting chops to be on the silver screen, and a few of the pitfalls along the way.

On believing in himself

“Understand, I was a Black boy living in some of the worst areas in New York,” says the 50-year-old rapper turned actor, who was raised in the Clifton neighborhood of Staten Island. “I’ve always felt like I wasn’t enough. I’ve been told that from the gate, ‘You don’t belong here.’ Sometimes even without words.”

Method Man On His Acting Career: ‘Take Me Seriously, Not Lightly’

On moving from rapper to actor

“The higher-ups, the so-called gatekeepers didn’t have much use for a 44-year-old rapper,” he says of the changing musical landscape in recent years. “I guess my background turned some people off. Some people aren’t willing to give you a chance, especially when you’ve already had one and you kind of squandered it.”

“There was a changing of the guard in hip-hop. I was cool with that. I had to evolve with the business and if that meant acting, so be it. I was going to throw all my eggs in one basket.”

Method Man On His Acting Career: ‘Take Me Seriously, Not Lightly’

On being a sex symbol

“I don’t understand that sh–. I go to the gym for my own peace of mind. I don’t do it to become someone’s sex symbol or a pinup on someone’s wall. I do it for me.”

“People like attention. I’m the same as everybody else. But at the end of the day, take me seriously, not lightly.”

#RHOA: Andy Cohen Says He’d Love To See Phaedra Parks Make A Return

Executive producer at Bravo and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen openly stated that he'd love to see Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks make a comeback to the franchise. During her seven seasons appearing on the Housewives series, Phaedra became quickly became one of the show's staple cast members. While her charming, southern belle personality may have charmed viewers, she was ultimately exiled from the Bravo world after it was revealed that she was the one spreading the slanderous rumors about cast Kandi Burress.

Fans were introduced to the entertainment attorney's eclectic lifestyle when she first appeared on RHOA back in 2010. From filming her at-home fitness video Donkey Booty to her seemingly never-ending feud with Kenya Moore, Phaedra became a core fixture in the show's ensemble of lavish, highly opinionated women. While she's had tense reunion tiffs with the likes of Nene Leakes and Cynthia Bailey, nothing could compare to the car crash of her relationship with her former bestie Kandi Burress at the season 9 reunion. Their friendship was on the rocks that year on the show when Phaedra began accusing Kandi's husband of "scrapping for change" after a business venture mix-up. While some harsh words were exchanged between the women, things got to a new level of severity when it was revealed that Phaedra was the one behind the rumor that Kandi was trying to take advantage of costar Porsha Williams by drugging her. Phaedra has yet to return to the franchise ever since that explosive reunion when the truth was revealed.

During a segment of Ask Andy on Bravo's after-show Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen was asked, "Out of all the former housewives, who would you bring back?" Without skipping a beat, the Bravo exec answered with, "Phaedra. Love Phaedra." Andy name-dropped a couple more iconic faces of the Housewives franchise, listing Bethenny Frankel and Vicki Gunvalson as some of the former cast members who he's missed the most.

Though she may no longer be a peach holder, Phaedra hasn't put her career as a television personality on standby. She returned to the small screen when she appeared on Marriage Boot Camp: Hip Hop season two with her then-boyfriend Medina Islam. Last year, she got the chance to show off her acting chops when she starred as Bernice Whitfield on the biblical anthology show, Covenant. Luckily for Bravo fans, Phaedra will be making her grand return to the network on Ultimate Girls Trip season 2.

While seeing Phaedra in Ultimate Girls Trip will surely be a delight for viewers, what Housewives fans are really clambering for is her return to Real Housewives of Atlanta. Ever since her termination as a cast member in season 9, fans have been waiting for the day when producers decide to shake up the show's dynamic by adding her back into the mix. Upon her hopeful return, the stakes among the women would surely rise as there is some unfinished business between Phaedra and Kandi. Because of Phaedra's departure, Porsha Williams was left to take the brunt of Kandi's wrath for the drama of season 9. If the southern belle were to return to RHOA, fans could likely see a pretty intense showdown between the old friends.

Kim Kardashian Accuses Kanye Of Attacking Her On Social Media & Trying To Control & Manipulate Their Situation

Kim Kardashian has responded directly to Kanye West, publicly. The reality star posted an open letter of sorts, addressing her estranged husband. Her response, comes shortly after Kanye called her out about Kim posting a short video of her and North West on TikTok.

Kim writes: “Kanye’s constant attacks on me in interviews and on social media is actually more hurtful than any TikTok North might create. As the parent who is the main provider and caregiver for our children, I am doing my best to protect our daughter while also allowing her to express her creativity in the medium that she wishes with adult supervision — because it brings her so much happiness Divorce is difficult enough on our children and Kanye’s obsession with trying to control and manipulate our situation so negatively and publicly is only causing further pain for all. From the beginning, I have wanted nothing but a healthy and supportive co-parenting relationship because it is what is best for our children and it saddens me that Kanye continues to make it impossible every step of the way. Hopefully he can finally respond to the third attorney he has had in the last year to resolve any issues amicably.”

See her complete statement below.

Joe Rogan apologizes for “N- word montage, says he’s not racist

The comedian’s second apology arrives just days after India Arie brought attention to the matter and removed her music off Spotify in protest.

Joe Rogan, Spotify’s prized podcaster, has apologized for using the N-word multiple times during his show “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

On Saturday (Feb. 5), Rogan took to Instagram to address a montage video of himself saying the word “nigger” in numerous instances on his show.

“I’m making this video to talk about the most regretful and shameful thing that I’ve ever had to talk about publicly,” Rogan said in the five-and-a-half-minute Instagram post.  “There’s a video that’s out that’s a compilation of me saying the N-word. It’s a video made of clips taken out of context of 12 years of conversations on my podcast and it’s all smushed together and it looks fucking horrible even to me.”

“Now, I know that to most people there’s no context where a white person is ever allowed to say that word, never mind publicly on a podcast, and I agree with that now. I haven’t said it in years, but for a long time when I would bring that word up, like if it would come up in conversation, instead of saying the N-word, I would just say the word. I thought as long as it was in context, people would understand what I was doing,” he continued.

Rogan went on to say that he never used the racial slur to be racist and that he doesn’t consider himself “racist.”

“I’m not racist but whenever you’re in a situation where you have to say ‘I’m not racist,’ you fucked up and I clearly fucked up and that’s my intention to express myself in this video to say there’s nothing I can do to take that back,” he said. “

“I do hope that if anything, that this can be a teachable moment. I never thought it would ever be taken out of context and put in a video like that and now that it is holy shit it looks bad.”

Rogan also stated that the portion of the clip where he tells a story about going to see Planet of the Apes in Philadelphia “wasn’t a racist story but it sounded terrible.”

According to The New York Times, which cited the website JRE Missing, a total of 113 episodes out of more than 1,700 have been deleted from Spotify. Other reports mention that as many as 70 episodes were recently removed by the streaming platform.

The Instagram apology video is Rogan’s second this week. In a 10-minute video posted on Sunday (Jan. 29), Rogan apologized to Spotify for the COVID-19 misinformation backlash the streaming site has received.

“If I pissed you off, I’m sorry,” Rogan said. “I will do my best to try to balance out these more controversial viewpoints with other people’s perspectives so we can maybe find a better point of view.”

The comedian’s second apology arrives just days after India Arie brought attention to the matter and removed her music off Spotify in protest.

Comedian Awkwafina Quits Twitter After Facing Criticism For Using A ‘Blaccent’

Awkwafina says she’s calling it quits on Twitter after addressing years-long criticism for using a blaccent during the earlier stages of her career.

The comedienne expressed her thoughts on Twitter and posted a letter explaining that she doesn’t use a blaccent. She also stated that she’s well aware of the “historical context of the African American community in this country” and cited that “in life, linguistic acculturation, immigrant acculturation, and the inevitable passage of globalized internet slang all play a factor in the fine line between offense and pop culture.”

She continued to explain that it wasn’t her intention to mock the Black community and will work tirelessly to learn its history.

“But as a non-Black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards toward the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group,” she continued. “But I must emphasize: To mock, belittle, or to be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My. Nature. It never has, and it never was.”

For years, Awkwafina has faced criticism about the accent and now her Twitter account will be controlled by her team. Twitter users also responded to her letter with various responses.

Michael Avenatti Found Guilty of Fraud and Identity Theft for Stealing from Stormy Daniels

Stormy Daniels’ former lawyer Michael Avenatti has been convicted of stealing from the 42-year-old adult film star.

via People:

On Friday, a Manhattan jury found Avenatti, 50, guilty of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Daniels’ former lawyer stole around $300,000 of the $800,000 advance paid to Daniels for her October 2018 book Full Disclosure about her alleged affair with Donald Trump prior to his presidency.

Daniels, born Stephanie Clifford, told NBC News that she was “ecstatic” about the verdict and “grateful” that the jurors “set aside prejudged notions about me or my work” during the trial.

“A win is always great,” Daniels said, “and I’m aware I won’t ever get my money back and worried that if it had gone the other way it would set a very scary precedent for people in the adult film industry.”

Daniels had previously hired Avenatti after accepting a $130,000 hush payment deal from Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen that had prohibited her from speaking about the alleged sexual encounter in public. The lawyer-client relationship fell apart after Daniels discovered Avenatti had kept some of the money from her book deal for himself.

“It’s never okay to steal money from a client and he forged my signature,” Daniels told NBC News.

Trump has denied the affair with Daniels, despite acknowledging their non-disclosure agreement.

It took three days of deliberations for the jury to come to a consensus on the charges against Avenatti. At one point, the jurors asked Judge Jesse Furman for help moving forward, noting that one individual was “not going on any evidence” but rather on their “emotions.”

“We have one juror who is refusing to look at evidence and is acting on a feeling,” the note said, per CNN. “We need assistance on moving forward. She does not believe she needs to prove her side using evidence and refuses to show us how she has come to her conclusion.”

Avenatti, who represented himself, called for a mistrial, but Furman denied the motion. “I don’t think we’re there yet,” he said, according to CNN.

After the ruling, Daniels’ attorney Clark Brewster released a statement applauding the jury’s decision and noting that Daniels “is relieved this nightmare is over.”

“The text communications between Stormy and Mr. Avenatti in real time was overwhelming proof of his deceit and embezzlement,” said Brewster, per ABC News. “The forgery of her name and his concealed directive to wire the money to him was irrefutable. Still, Mr. Avenatti possessed the uncanny ability to steadfastly deny the crimes and persuade others he was entitled to the embezzled funds. Stormy is pleased that the justice system worked.”

Outside of the courthouse, Avenatti told reporters that he planned to fight the ruling.

“I am very disappointed in the jury’s verdict,” he said, per NBC News and CNN. “I look forward to a full adjudication of all of the issues on appeal. Thank you.”

Avenatti is already a convicted felon, having been found guilty of attempting to extort millions of dollars from Nike in February 2020. He was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for the crime.

Avenatti could face up to 22 years in prison for his latest conviction. Daniels told The New York Post that she does not wish leniency on her former lawyer.

“He showed absolutely no remorse, lying about me right until the end,” Daniels told the Post. “I’ll leave the sentencing to the judge but the maximum would be nice, but then again so would an apology. I am not really holding my breath for either.”

“I know that I’m never going to get that money back because he doesn’t have it,” she added. “I do look forward to speaking at his sentencing hearing and I guess I will just have to take comfort in knowing that he can’t do this to anyone else.”

Avenatti is scheduled for sentencing on May 24.

As much as Stormy Daniels has been through, she deserves her coins.

Waffle House shooter found guilty on four counts of murder

Waffle House shooter may dodge trial with ‘incompetent’ defense

A jury found the man who shot and killed four people in a Waffle House in Tennessee in 2018 guilty on four counts of first-degree murder.

Travis Reinking, 33, had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, having said God told him to kill.

Reinking did not react as the verdict was read on Friday, other than to look at his parents. The families of his victims celebrated.

“True justice is having my son here,”, Shaundelle Brooks, mother to victim, Akila Dasilva, told reporters. “This is the closest [thing] to true justice.”

The jury will meet again Saturday to hear victim impact statements and deliberate over whether Reinking should have a chance at parole.

The jury also convicted him on four counts of attempted first-degree murder and four counts of unlawful employment of a firearm during a commission of or attempt to commit a dangerous felony.

Reinking wounded four other people, two seriously, in addition to the four he killed

Mark Wahlberg makes it clear he didn’t give Tom Holland a sex toy

Mark Wahlberg wants to set the record straight. On Friday, the famously buff actor, 50, showed off a massage gun used to aid post-workout recovery — the same one he had gifted co-star Tom Holland.

“Mr. Tom Holland, you see this? Power Plate Pulse, this is a massage tool, for muscle recovery, nothing else,” Wahlberg asserted in the Instagram clip.

Earlier in the week the “Spider-Man” star, 25, revealed that he thought the muscle stimulator was actually a sex toy.

“Mark Wahlberg was kind enough to give me a massage gun after I left his house in L.A. and he drove me back to my hotel,” Holland said in a recent virtual interview with “Access Hollywood,” adding, “I was confused as to what kind of massage gun this was, having never seen one before, and I thought it was the type of self-pleasure.”

“I thought Mark Wahlberg was driving me back to my house for other reasons other than just being a gentleman,” he continued. “I didn’t know you — it’s Hollywood, baby. Who knows what’s gonna happen?”

Wahlberg, who was also in on the interview, was surprised by the revelation.

“I can’t believe, the whole time, you were thinking that,” he exclaimed. “Gotta get your head outta the gutter, buddy.”

The “Boogie Nights” star clearly felt the need to show that he wasn’t trying to woo Holland.

The pair can currently be seen together on screen in “Uncharted” in which they play partners who embark on a quest to find “the greatest treasure never found.”

‘The Boondocks’ Reboot Scrapped at HBO Max

“The Boondocks” reboot series has been scrapped at HBO Max, Variety has learned.

In September 2019, HBO Max ordered a two-season revival of the animated series before the WarnerMedia-owned streaming service had even launched. The 24 new “The Boondocks” episodes were set to launch on HBO Max in Fall 2020. The original series is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.

News that the the reboot series would not be moving forward was revealed by “The Boondocks” voice actor Cedric Yarbrough, who played Tom DuBois, on the Geekset Podcast.

“The Boondocks” voice actor Cedric Yarbrough, who voiced Tom DuBois in the original series, spoke about the reboot’s fate earlier this week on the podcast, saying “the show is not coming back” and “hopefully one day we’ll be able to revisit it.”

Based on Aaron McGruder’s comic strips, “The Boondocks” reboot was set to follow the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman and his two rambunctious grandsons, Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.

McGruder was on board to act as showrunner and executive produce alongside Norm Aladjem for Mainstay Entertainment, as well as Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson. Sony Pictures Animation was producing the series in partnership with Sony Pictures Television.

HBO Max and studio Sony Pictures Animation declined Variety‘s request for comment.

Nick Cannon Apologizes For New Birth Announcement

Nick Cannon, 41, apologizes for baby number 8 birth announcement following the death of his baby Zen.

Just days after announcing that he’s expecting his eighth child, the talk show host issued an on-air apology to Alyssa Scott, the mother of his late son Zen, as well as the other mothers of his children for causing “extra pain” by publicly announcing his new baby news.

The Wild ‘N Out star has publicly mourned the loss of his youngest child, Zen, after the infant died at five months old following a battle with brain cancer in December.

Nick said it may have seemed like he was making comparisons between his late son Zen and the child he is expecting. He said they are “completely separate moments in my life and they both deserve the respect.”

Cannon added that he failed to “protect and respect the privacy of the mothers of all my children.”

His new child on the way is with his girlfriend Bre Tiesi. The two will soon welcome a new baby boy.

Clive Davis Postpones His Annual Pre-Grammy Gala Until 2023

Clive Davis’s legendary pre-Grammy party will be postponed until 2023 for several reasons.

The Recording Academy and Clive Davis announced that the annual gala would not happen this year. The pre-Grammy “Clive Party” happens every year at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the night before the star-studded event.

In the announcement, Clive says the cause of postponing the party is due to the COVID pandemic and not having any venues available.

“Due to the logistical obstacles caused by the ongoing pandemic. Including the unavailability of an appropriate venue, we have decided to postpone the 2022 Pre-Grammy Gala,” Davis said in a statement.

Despite not being able to celebrate this year, Davis is clear on its return for 2023.

“We will resume the celebration next year when we will host an incredible evening in our unique and glittering way. Hospitable to our wonderful music artists, music executives, film, television, sports, and illustrious politicians who annually love the event like no other.”

Clive has welcomed many high-profile celebrities to the gala throughout the years ranging from Paul McCartney to Janet Jackson.

The 2022 Grammy’s will also be located at a new venue. This year’s event will be held at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Minneapolis Officials Release Body Cam Footage Of Deadly Police Encounter In The Amir Locke Shooting

The City of Minneapolis has released body camera footage showing Wednesday’s fatal police shooting of 22-year-old Amir Locke.

Documents released on Thursday confirm that Officer Mark Hanneman fatally shot Amir Rahkare Locke Wednesday morning at the Balero Flats apartment building in downtown Minneapolis.

Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene of the shooting. Police claim the weapon was loaded with 5.7mm rounds. But Locke’s relatives quickly note that he was licensed to carry a weapon and had no criminal history in Minnesota.

Officers used both a knock and no-knock warrant to enter the apartment that Locke was sleeping in. Locke was not named in the original warrant, and it’s “unclear” if he was connected to the investigation.

WATCH HERE

In the video posted on the city’s YouTube page, the officers can be seen approaching a couch that Locke appears to be sleeping on. He then sits up and turns toward the officers holding a gun. A second later, an officer fires three shots, and Locke falls to the floor. The shooting is then replayed in super-slow motion and then replayed again in real-time. In total, Locke is shot within roughly 10 seconds after officers open the apartment door

Chelsea Handler Postpones Comedy Shows After Hospital Scare

Chelsea Handler was forced to postpone multiple comedy shows after ending up hospitalized.

via Complex:

The news was announced Friday afternoon, just hours before the 46-year-old comedian was scheduled to take the stage at the Keller Auditorium in Portland. A message posted to Handler’s social media accounts confirmed the Feb. 4 gigs in Portland had been pushed back to March 5; while her Feb. 5 show in Eugene, Oregon, was rescheduled for March 4. Both events are part of Handler’s Vaccinated and Horny Tour, which kicked off this week in Seattle.

“Chelsea is deeply saddened to have to cancel tonight’s and tomorrow’s Portland and Eugene shows and looks forward to giving you a spectacular show in the near future,” the post’s caption read.

The announcement states tickets for the original shows will be honored for the new dates.

A day after the postponements were confirmed, Handler filmed a video message from her hospital bed and apologized for the last-minute cancellations. Though she didn’t provide many details, the former late-night talk show host said she had to move the gigs because of a health scare.

“I am so sorry I had to cancel my shows tonight in Portland and my show in Eugene,” she said in a message shared on her Instagram Stories. “I had a scare at the hospital, and I don’t have COVID, and I’m OK, but I had to reschedule my shows … So, I just wanted to say that, and I will see you all when I see you, and I’m sorry that I had to cancel. But I’m all OK. And I’m not pregnant.”

Vaccinated and Horny Tour will include stops in Toronto, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Philadelphia, before concluding Oct. 22 in Las Vegas.
