Regina Hall for Health Magazine September 2021!

After a milestone birthday, Regina Hall is taking the time to reflect on the wellness practices that make her feel her best for Health’s September issue, where she opens up on her new series ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ alongside Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy and the hardship that lead her to acting.

On what drew her to Nine Perfect Strangers: “So many elements! I am a big fan of Nicole Kidman—I think she’s tremendous. And I’m a big fan of Melissa McCarthy. I think she’s amazing. Then, of course, I read the script and I realized it was a Liane Moriarty book. I had loved Big Little Lies. Every time I read an episode I was like, ‘Wait, I want to know what happens in the next one.’ That’s always a good sign.”

On her father unexpectedly passing away when she was in her early 20s: “It was his passing that really shifted how I looked at life—I realized how brief it can be and how suddenly it can change,” she shares. “That’s what led me to acting. The thing about feeling broken is that it forces you to be open—you feel like you don’t have much, so you don’t overthink everything.”

On the wellness practices that make her feel best: “I love when I eat right and when I feel spiritually centered and connected. I love when I’m meditating—that ebbs and flows. Sometimes I pray, sometimes I meditate, and sometimes it’s just about being in nature. My mom just passed, so it’s been a rough time, and I haven’t been able to meditate. But I have been able to talk to God and be in nature and be present in the beauty of that.”

On turning 50 and evolving through life: “I think in the collective consciousness of the world, it’s considered a big milestone—so there’s no way for it to not be exactly that. But it’s also not abnormal—you either have another birthday…or you don’t. It’s that or death, right? Life is an ever-evolving thing and process. You just keep knowing more and changing—at least that’s the hope.”

The September issue of Health magazine is available for purchase on August 13.

A Twitter user tagged the reality star turned restauranteur and stated they hoped she enjoyed the clip, which had taken over timelines. However, the Linnethia Lounge owner let it be known that this was no laughing matter.

#MusicNews: Madonna Brings Entire Catalog to Warner Music as Part of New ‘Career-Spanning Partnership’!

Madonna, the top-selling female artist of all time, will bring her entire catalog of recorded music under the Warner Music umbrella as part of a career-spanning global partnership announced Monday. The singer, who launched her career with Warner, has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, won seven Grammys and dozens of other major awards, including 24 ASCAP Pop Music awards, MTV VMAs, Brits, Ivor Novellos, Junos and more, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Madonna’s compositions are already administered globally by Warner Chappell Music publishing, so the move brings her entire solo music catalog under one roof.

A rep for Warner confirmed that the partnership does not address new recordings; Madonna’s deal with Interscope Records ended last year, so she apparently remains a free agent for future music projects.

Madonna said. “Since the very beginning, Warner Music Group has helped bring my music and vision to all my fans around the world with the utmost care and consideration. They have been amazing partners, and I am delighted to be embarking on this next chapter with them to celebrate my catalogue from the last 40 years.”

The partnership, which comes in advance of next year’s 40th anniversary of Madonna’s debut single, encompasses her entire Sire/Maverick/Warner catalog, including top-sellers and critical favorites “Madonna,” “Like a Virgin,” “True Blue,” “Like a Prayer” and “Ray of Light.” The main update in the deal sees her three most recent studio albums, “MDNA,” “Rebel Heart” and “Madame X,” which were released on Interscope, joining the Warner catalog beginning in 2025. In total, the new pact includes 17 studio albums plus singles, soundtrack recordings, live albums, and compilations.

According to the announcement, the deal “heralds the launch next year of an extensive, multi-year series of catalog releases that will revisit the groundbreaking music that made her an international icon.” Madonna will personally curate expansive deluxe editions for many of her landmark albums, as well as introduce unique releases for special events, and more. The series of releases will be overseen by Warner Music’s catalog team, led by Kevin Gore, with the first release to be announced soon.

This deal was executed by Madonna’s longtime manager Guy Oseary at Maverick, Allen Grubman of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sachs P.C., her business manager Richard Feldstein of NKSFB, and Max Lousada, CEO, Recorded Music, Warner Music Group.

Guy Oseary said: “Over the past 30 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and spend time with many of Madonna’s incredible fans, and this new partnership will bring to fruition what so many of them have been patiently waiting for: a celebration of her groundbreaking catalogue. My partner Sara Zambreno and I are working closely with Warner Music Group to bring new life to these iconic works.”

Max Lousada added: “We’re honored to be forming a dynamic new partnership with an incomparable superstar whose influence on our musical and artistic landscape is immense and immutable. Madonna has changed the course of pop and dance music, while taking live performance to new heights of drama and invention. At the same time, she uses her fame to amplify some of the most important social issues and movements of our time. Constantly and fearlessly challenging convention, her four decades of music are not only an extraordinary body of work, but a playbook for creative and cultural evolution.”

On October 8, Madonna will be releasing her documentary film, “Madame X,” exclusively on Paramount+ (on MTV in markets where that channel is not available). Filmed in Lisbon, Portugal, the film captures her 2019 tour performance.

In other news, Madonna has announced her birthday wish for friends and supporters to adopt a bed at the Mercy James Centre hospital in Malawi, built especially for children. There are 50 beds in the hospital’s ward, where children recuperate after surgery or regain strength following intensive care. By adopting a bed, you can ensure that any sick or injured child that comes through the hospital doors has access to world-class specialized care. Madonna has challenged supporters to adopt all 50 beds in honor of her birthday. For more information on how to donate, go to: www.raisingmalawi.org/adopt-a-bed/

Halle Berry is being sued by ex-UFC fighter Cat Zingano, as reported by TMZ. Halle Berry allegedly asked Cat Zingano to keep an open schedule in order to appear in Bruised, a Netflix film that Halle Berry is directing, Cat Zingano claims. There are no plans for The Real Housewives of Dallas to return to Bravo in 2022, leaving the futures of Season 5 stars Dr. Tiffany Moon, Kary Brittingham, Stephanie Hollman, Brandi Redmond, D’Andra Simmons and Kameron Westcott hanging in the balance.

via: People: The Bravo series, which most recently aired its fifth season, will not be returning for a sixth next year, Bravo confirmed on Tuesday.

“There are currently no plans to bring The Real Housewives of Dallas back next year,” a spokesperson for the network tells PEOPLE.

As for the possibility of future seasons premiering at a later date, “nothing official has been decided,” the network added.

RHOD was first announced in 2015 as the ninth installment in Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise. Season one premiered the following year, starring Hollman and Redmond, as well as Cary Deuber, Tiffany Hendra and LeeAnn Locken.

The franchise as a whole launched in March 2006 with The Real Housewives of Orange County. In February, however, it was announced that a reboot of The Real Housewives of Miami was in development at NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, Peacock.

PEOPLE has also confirmed that the streaming service is developing two seasons of a Housewives mashup series.

Barbra Streisand Says She Would Have Preferred Beyoncé and Will Smith in ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake!

Barbra Streisand Says She Would Have Preferred Beyoncé and Will Smith in ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

In a new interview with The Sunday Project, Barbra Streisand, who famously starred in a remake of “A Star Is Born” in 1976, is sharing her honest thoughts on the 2018 rendition starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

During the interview, Streisand admitted that the film was a success but hoped it would have included bigger stars including Will Smith and Beyoncé. She thought having them take on the big roles would have made the new film more “interesting.”

The 79-year-old explained, “At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé, and I thought, that’s interesting. Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea,” Streisand shared of the once-rumored casting. “So, I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976.” Streisand went on to say that she, “thought it was the wrong idea” for the remake but that she “can’t argue with success” after it grossed $436m at the box office.

Gaga and Cooper’s debut went on to gross more than $436 million worldwide it took home the Oscar for best original song and many more accolades. But to Streisand, that’s not important.

She added: “[But] I don’t care so much about success as I do originality.”

Facebook Reportedly Came To The Defense Of Lizzo And Deleted Hateful Comments That Were Left On Her Page!

This past weekend was supposed to be a celebratory one for Lizzo, as she just returned with her first single in almost two years: “Rumors,” with Cardi B. But it was rudely interrupted by trolls, who appeared on her social media pages with hateful comments. The posts pushed the singer to tears and she hopped on Instagram Live to share her thoughts. “For the most part, it doesn’t hurt my feelings. I don’t care,” she said during the livestream. “I just think when I’m working this hard, my tolerance gets lower, my patience is lower, I’m more sensitive and it gets to me.”

Now one social media platform is stepping up to defend her. According to TMZ, Facebook is coming to the defense of the singer by deleting a number of the hateful comments that were posted on her page. Furthermore, the platform is taking the extra step to delete the accounts of multiple trolls. They added that the platform will review additional reports of hateful comments on a continuous basis.

The news comes after Cardi defended Lizzo on Twitter after watching a clip of her Instagram Livestream. “When you stand up for yourself they claim your problematic & sensitive,” the rapper wrote. “When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you.” She added, “Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”

Drake Reveals He Had COVID and Hair Loss Was a Lingering Side Effect: 'It's Coming Back'!

Drake was one of the millions of people who contracted COVID-19 in the last year — and he's still dealing with some lingering side effects.

The rapper, 34, revealed that he had the virus and it led to hair loss, which is finally improving now.

Drake shared the news on a fan's Instagram post, where they had made fun of his hairline.

"That heart is stressed 💀😭," the fan wrote, referring to a small heart that Drake has shaved into the top left of his head.

"I had COVID that s— grew in weird I had to start again 😂," the "Hotline Bling" singer responded.

"It's coming back don't diss," he added. Temporary hair loss is a fairly common side effect of COVID-19, and a recent pre-print study from Indiana University found that around 33% of patients they surveyed noticed it as a symptom. Hair loss frequently happens due to stress, an effect called telogen effluvium, and severe illnesses like COVID-19 can stress out the body.

Actress Alyssa Milano has spoken openly about the "extreme hair loss" she's dealt with in the months since contracting COVID-19, along with "brain fog."

"It's hard, especially when you're an actor and so much of your identity is wrapped up in those things, like having long silky hair and clean skin," she said in October. "Along with that also, I have the brain fog. Which, again, as an actress, as someone who has to memorize dialogue and be able to emote, and respond, and be on my toes, it's frightening."

Drake was one of the first celebrities to talk about getting tested for COVID-19, after he was exposed to the virus in March 2020 while hanging out with NBA star Kevin Durant, who had tested positive. The four-time Grammy winner said on an Instagram Live that month that he "had to get tested" after his exposure and it came back negative.

"That test was uncomfortable though," the "God's Plan" singer added. "They put that Q-tip all the way inside your thoughts and s—."

Lady Gaga’s Dog Walker Ryan Fischer Feels ‘Abandoned,’ Asks for Donations!

Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, is asking for help during his cross-country road trip of recovery.

via: Page Six “This is not an easy thing to ask,” Ryan Fischer, 40, wrote as he launched a GoFundMe seeking $40,000 to help him buy a van and drive across the US on a “process of growing from trauma.”

Fischer started his trip soon after leaving a Los Angeles hospital. The former dog walker had to undergo surgery after getting shot in the chest by armed dog-nappers as he tried to protect the “Shallow” star’s French bulldogs.

His fundraiser included a video showing him in a hospital bed as well as images of his bullet wounds — and a soundtrack of someone shouting about being “angrier than ever.”

“At times I was scared. I was lonely. I felt abandoned and unsupported. I had long bouts of depression and doubt and self-pity,” he said.

But he recently “said goodbye to Trudy, a quasi-reliable 1991 Ford Falcon rental that drove like a boat in high wind” as he traveled across the US from Gaga’s home in L.A. back to his native New York.

“So here I am … I have a clear purpose but am at an obvious impasse,” he wrote on his GoFundMe as well as at least two Instagram pages he runs.

“With no vehicle, apartment, and having run out of savings and surviving on donations from generous loved ones, I am humbly asking for your help,” he wrote.

The cash would help him get a new van and pay for travel expenses as he continues “seeking out communities that support the process of growing from trauma,” he wrote.

“For me, this includes retreat centers, trauma programs, queer healers, creatives and spiritual leaders,” he said on the fundraiser, which as of Tuesday afternoon had raised just over $4,500 of his $40,000 goal.

While Fischer did not name Gaga, many followers tagged the 35-year-old singer and longtime friend of Fischer.

“Question: Why won’t Lady Gaga help you out? ” one follower asked. “She was willing to provide $500,000 for the safe return of her dogs, so I’d think that giving you $40,000 would be a drop in the bucket ?”

“Wow this is shocking. Why had Lady Gaga not helped you?!!” one follower asked, while other fans insisted she helped with medical bills.

Another asked why “the wealthy person connected to all of this” was “not helping him,” saying, “Im just… confused.”

Reps for the star did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Fischer’s Feb. 24 shooting was captured in distressing doorbell footage that caught him screaming “Oh, my God! I’ve been shot!” and “I’m bleeding out from my chest!”

When Gaga announced her $500,000 reward for the return of the then-still-missing French bulldogs, Koji and Gustav, she said her injured dog walker would be “forever a hero.”

“I continue to love you Ryan Fischer, you risked your life to fight for our family,” she said at the time.

The pups were later handed in by a woman who asked for the big-money reward, claiming she found them tied to a pole.

However, she was later charged after being connected to the suspected dognappers, a trio of alleged gang members who were supposedly unaware their valuable targets had such a famous owner.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Speak Out on Afghanistan and Haiti: 'We Are Left Heartbroken ... Speechless'!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are speaking out during an "exceptionally fragile" time.

In a statement shared on their Archewell Foundation website on Tuesday, the couple addressed the Taliban taking hold in Afghanistan, the tropical storm hitting an earthquake-stricken Haiti and the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

"The world is exceptionally fragile right now," began Meghan, 40, and Prince Harry, 36. "As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless. As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, and the threat of it worsening after last weekend's earthquake, we are left heartbroken. And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared."

"When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realize it or not," the parents of two said. "And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we, as a people, are being conditioned to accept it. It's easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action — together."

Meghan and Harry encouraged followers to support organizations in need and urged leaders to "to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues."

"As an international community, it is the decisions we make now — to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet — that will prove our humanity," they concluded. The note was signed from "The Duke & Duchess of Sussex," followed by Harry and Meghan's first-name signatures.

A following note signed from "The Archewell Team" shared how the organization plans to help, from supporting troops who served in Afghanistan to working with their partner World Central Kitchen with the emergency efforts in Haiti. They are also "working to support vaccine equity through our commitment to combating the spread of misinformation, as well as our ongoing partnerships with Vax Live and Global Citizen."

"We recognize that many of you may feel helpless right now as you watch the state of the world spin rapidly. It can feel disorienting and defeating, but we have faith in the power of shared purpose, action, and commitment to our collective well-being," the team wrote before providing links to various resources.

On Monday, Prince Harry issued a joint statement with Dominic Reid, the CEO of Harry's Invictus Games, encouraging military veterans to seek support from one another as the Taliban rule takes hold in Afghanistan.

"What's happening in Afghanistan resonates across the international Invictus community," read their statement, which was shared on the Invictus Games Foundation's Twitter account. "Many of the participating nations and competitors in the Invictus Games family are bound by a shared experience of serving in Afghanistan over the past two decades, and for several years, we have competed alongside Invictus Games Team Afghanistan."

"We encourage everybody across the Invictus network — and the wider military community — to reach out to each other and offer support for one another," the statement concluded.

Harry served in the British Army for 10 years, and was deployed to Afghanistan twice.

Robert De Niro Spends 78th Birthday In France With Gal Pal!

Robert De Niro spent his birthday in France with a friend.Spread Pictures / SplashNews.com

The bull rages a bit quieter these days.

Robert De Niro seems to be recovering well from the leg injury he sustained filming Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” earlier this year, celebrating his 78th birthday with a boat ride in France with a gal pal by his side.

The “Goodfellas” star was photographed while exiting Hotel Eden Roc in France with a companion ID’d by paps as Tiffany Chen, a New York-based martial arts instructor.

Chen, who has a long list of competitive martial arts wins under her belt, appeared alongside De Niro in “The Intern” in 2015, teaching his and co-star Anne Hathaway’s character tai chi in a park.

Both wore face masks, with DeNiro keeping his on as he was helped aboard a small boat by its crew.

De Niro’s getaway comes days after the “Taxi Driver” actor was spotted in New York City, hitting the streets of Tribeca for the first time without his post-injury knee brace.

De Niro told IndieWire of the injury, “I tore my quad somehow … [It was] just a simple stepping over something and I just went down. The pain was excruciating and now I have to get it fixed. But it happens, especially when you get older, you have to be prepared for unexpected things.”

Kanye West May Reportedly Host Another ‘Donda’ Listening Event In Chicago

As fans wait for the release of Donda, another listening event is being teased. On Tuesday (Aug. 17), a fan who works at the Soldier Field in Chicago shared his belief that a forthcoming show listed as a “major concert event” on a staffing app will be helmed by the city’s own Kanye West. The event, he claims, is scheduled to take place on Aug. 26.

“I work for security at Soldier Field, and we recently had an event added under ‘major concert event,’ and I’m very confident that it’s for Kanye’s listening party,” he tweeted. “If it’s true, then Kanye will be performing in Chicago at Soldier Field on the 26th.”

Kanye West apparently isn’t moving to another stadium to finish ‘Donda’

Fake Shore Drive’s Andrew Barber also teased Kanye’s next event, tweeting, “Donda listening party in Chicago?” alongside eye emojis.

If the event comes to fruition, it will be the first Donda listening party in Ye’s hometown but the third major event that will see the rapper preview new songs in front of his supporters. The first two parties were held two weeks apart in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with fans anticipating the album’s release in the moments after each event ended. Unfortunately, the album has yet to drop.

At one point, a tweet from collaborator KayCyy claimed that Kanye — who stayed in the Atlanta venue to complete the project — was “moving to another stadium” to finish it up. KayCyy later revealed that his page was hacked.

Kanye West reportedly made $7 million off ‘Donda’ merch during second livestream

“You hackers gotta stop,” he wrote. “4 of my tweets were hacks ... I will not be on Twitter anymore for the rest of the week.”

It remains to be seen whether West will actually host his third listening party, but if he does, he is likely to benefit in some way. According to Billboard, he set an Apple Music record after 5.4 million viewers tuned into the livestream for his second event. He also reportedly made $7 million off merchandise sales.

The Biden Administration to Increase Food Stamps Benefits by 25%

The Biden administration recently approved the highest increase in food stamps in the program’s history.

Beginning in October, average food stamp benefits will increase by more than 25% over pre-pandemic levels. The extra help will be accessible to all 42 million SNAP recipients indefinitely.

The New York Times was the first to report the increase in aid, and an Agriculture Department spokesman confirmed the specifics. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will make the announcement sometime today.

The aid increase is disguised as a significant change to the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan, which means that per-person benefits will increase from $121 to $157 per month.

The boost is part of Biden’s administration’s multi-pronged endeavor to bolster the country’s social safety net. According to poverty and food security advocates, long-standing weaknesses in the safety net were exposed by the COVID-19 epidemic, providing an opportunity to implement generational adjustments that go beyond the current public health crisis.

Activists claim that pre-pandemic SNAP benefits were insufficient, forcing many families to choose cheaper, less nutritious options or go hungry as funding ran out near the end of the month.

Eminem Joins Cast of 50 Cent's New Show 'BMF'!

Eminem has landed a role in 50 Cent‘s new show!

50 Cent revealed on Tuesday (August 17) that Eminem will be guest starring in his upcoming Starz series, BMF (Black Mafia Family).

BMF tells the real-life story of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, who formed the Black Mafia Family – one of the most influential and powerful criminal empires in 1980s Detroit.

Eminem will be playing real-life FBI informant Rick Wershe, aka White Boy Rick, who became an informant as a teen and was later busted for selling drugs, spending decades in jail before being released in 2020.

While announcing Eminem‘s role, 50 Cent explained why it was important to have the Detroit native take part in BMF.

“I’m honored and appreciative of my good friend Em for supporting my new show BMF,” 50 Cent said in a statement to The Wrap. “We couldn’t do a show based in Detroit without incorporating the legend that is Eminem.”

BMF marks one of Eminem‘s only acting roles since starring in the 2002 movie 8 Mile.

BMF is set to premiere on September 26th on Starz.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Tests Positive For Coronavirus A Day After Attending GOP Event Unmasked!

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, according to his office, who said the Republican is in good health and experiencing no symptoms.

Abbott, who was vaccinated in December and has refused calls to reinstate mask mandates as the highly contagious delta variant surges in Texas, was isolating in the governor’s mansion in Austin and receiving monoclonal antibody treatment, spokesman Mark Miner said in a statement. He is at least the 11th governor to test positive for the virus since the pandemic began, according to a tally by The Associated Press.

“Governor Abbott is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in good health, and currently experiencing no symptoms. Everyone that the Governor has been in close contact with today has been notified,” Miner said.

In a video posted on social media, Abbott said the fact that he had been fully vaccinated “may be one reason I’m really not feeling any symptoms right now. I have no fever, no aches and pains, no other types of symptoms.”

The positive test comes a day after Abbott, who has seldom been seen wearing a mask in public recently, did not wear one while speaking indoors near Dallas to a crowded room of GOP supporters, most of whom were older and unmasked. Video posted by his campaign shows the 63-year-old governor — who is up for reelection in 2022 and has drawn two GOP challengers who have attacked the virus restrictions he put in place last year — mingling with attendees as they gathered around him taking pictures.

“Another standing room only event in Collin County tonight,” Abbott tweeted.

The event was held by a group called the Republican Club at Heritage Ranch. Reached by phone Tuesday after Abbott announced he had tested positive, Jack DeSimone, president of the club, said he did not like “to have conversations like this” and declined to comment further on Abbott’s appearance.

U.S. expected to recommend COVID vaccine boosters 8 months after last dose, sources say

Abbott had also posted a picture of himself with the guitarist Jimmie Vaughan earlier Tuesday before news of his positive test. Vaughan and his family have tested negative, according to a statement from the musician.

Abbott has rebuffed calls to reimpose pandemic restrictions, including mask mandates, as cases in Texas are again soaring, hospitals are stretched thin, and a growing number of school districts defy his orders that prohibit face-covering requirements in classrooms. Abbott and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton are now in court fighting what amounts to many of Texas’ largest school districts, which began classes this week.

More than 12,200 patients in Texas were hospitalized with the virus as of Tuesday, the highest levels since January, and state health officials said this week they had requested five morgue trailers from the federal government as a precaution. But as cases have sharply climbed, Abbott has stuck to a message that the path forward “relies on personal responsibility.”

By Tuesday, at least four Texas school districts had already temporarily closed because of virus outbreaks just days into students returning to class. And in a sign of tensions as schools defy Abbott’s orders, the superintendent of the Eanes school district near Austin said one parent “physically assaulted” one teacher by ripping a mask off her face.

Democrat Rafael Anchia, a state representative from Dallas, said he wished the governor a speedy recovery and was “praying this sign will cause him to rescind the order stopping schools from requiring masks.”

Miner said the governor’s address to the group was his only public event this week. He said Abbott tested negative Monday and that no one else on staff has tested positive.

Abbott’s wife, Cecilia Abbott, tested negative. The governor had been getting tested daily and Miner said “everyone that the Governor has been in close contact with today has been notified.”

North Carolina Seeks to Raise Minimum Age to Marry from 14 to 16!

North Carolina state lawmakers seek to raise the minimum age to get married from 14 to 16.

If passed, the change would also limit the difference in age between a 16-year-old and their spouse to four years. The maximum age gap will function similarly to statutory rape laws.

The legislation needs one more Senate vote before going to Governor Roy Cooper’s desk. It’s anticipated that the Democratic governor will sign it into law, hopefully, this week.

The state has gained the reputation of being a destination for adults who want to marry children, something lawmakers want to change.

The current state law allows children as young as 14 to wed if they are pregnant or if a judge approves the marriage. With parental consent, a 16-year-old may also get married.

The low minimum age has made the state a regional destination for adults looking to wed child brides. Adults from nearby states like South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee are now bringing child brides to N.C. All of those states have recently made changes to the minimum age.

“We will have moved the needle and made North Carolina no longer at the very bottom of the barrel of states,” Drew Reisinger, the register of deeds in Buncombe County, told CBS News. Last year, two-thirds of the marriages in Buncombe County involved at least one minor under 18.

Initially, the bill proposed raising the minimum age to 18. However, the bill lacked support from some state lawmakers who are still ok with some instances of children being allowed to get married.
