“Euphoria’s” Hunter Schafer Covers Allure’s September Issue!

Using your platform as a white celebrity: “I feel like with a lot of white celebrities in particular who do benefit from their whiteness and white supremacy, and by proxy the oppression of Black people, they need to be speaking in these moments or to be active in some way. Part of that is using your platform or giving it to someone else, but I also think our voices aren’t necessary in this. There’s also a way to quietly do your part, and a lot of that has to do with allocating funds to the right people. It’s going to be [about] finding some direct action with your body and interrogating your whiteness. None of that is Instagrammable.”
On her identity as a trans woman: “Even right now, I have to filter what I say, because more often than not I’ve found that when I say the T-word, whatever sentence that is becomes a headliner,” she says. “Not only do I think that’s so boring and so predictable, it’s, like, such a fraction [of my life]. It feels sensational. It feels like it’s prone to getting sensationalized. I also understand the need for dialogue on it.”
On her future: “I have no idea what I’m doing — just riding the wave that life is handing me and trying to be okay and keep my shit together. I think whatever presence I have, in the public-figure world, presents itself as something more collected, but I’m messy. I am just trying to figure out how to be a 21-year-old.”

#HipHopNews: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s 'WAP' Is Officially No. 1!

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's explosive "WAP" has debuted at No. 1, making the song Cardi's fourth No. 1 with scoring Megan her second. Hot Girl Meg previously topped the charts earlier this year with her "Savage" remix.

According to Billboard, "WAP" racked in 93 million streams, which happens to be the most any track has had in its first week of release. "WAP" was also downloaded 125,000 times, beating out Taylor Swift's "ME!," which until then held the record for most downloads in a single week. Cardi and Megan's song also drew 11.6 million radio airplay impressions.
Billboard notes that the track adds to what has been a "historic" year for female collaborations. "WAP" is the ninth Hot 100 No. 1 credited to more than one woman ever, and the fourth this year. Before 2020, only five songs by two or more female acts had achieved the spot.

Cardi took to Instagram to post a video of herself celebrating the news first thing in the morning, before even getting "glammed up" as she says. "I'm just so thankful," she wrote in the caption, while still sporting that incredible paisley-printed braid. "I want to hug the LORD."
Megan also shared Cardi's enthusiasm, sharing that they got off the phone with other screaming before taking to Instagram to thank fans. "Thank you for all the laughs," she wrote. "Thank you for having me on the record."

2 men indicted in 2002 killing of Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay!
NEW YORK (AP) — Two men have been indicted in the 2002 slaying of hip hop artist Jam Master Jay, which until now had been one of New York City's most notorious unsolved killings, three law enforcement officials told the Associated Press on Monday.
The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and did so on the condition of anonymity. One of them identified the suspects as Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan. Federal prosecutors were expected to announce the charges at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Washington, who had reportedly been living on a couch at Jay’s home in the days before his death, was publicly named as a possible suspect or witness as far back as 2007. He is currently serving a federal prison sentence stemming from a string of robberies he committed while on the run from police after Jay's death.

In court papers filed at the time, prosecutors alleged that Washington waved a handgun around and ordered people in Jay's Queens recording studio to lie on the ground while another man killed him on Oct. 30, 2002.
Washington “provided cover for his associate to shoot and kill Jason Mizell,” prosecutors wrote.
Jason “Jay” Mizell, known professionally as Jam Master Jay, was a member of 1980s hip-hop sensation Run-DMC with Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniel. Their hits included “It's Tricky,” “Christmas in Hollis” and the Aerosmith remake collaboration “Walk This Way.”

Jay was shot once in the head with a .40-caliber bullet by a masked assailant at his studio in Hollis, the Queens neighborhood where he grew up, police said at the time. He left behind a wife and three children.
Police identified at least four people in the studio with Jay, including the two armed gunmen. The city and Jay's friends offered more than $60,000 in reward money, but witnesses refused to come forward and the case languished.

Jay's acquaintance with Washington upset his family. Before sleeping on Jay's couch, Washington had been linked to the 1995 fatal shooting of Randy Walker, a close associate of the late Tupac Shakur.

Rapper MC Lyte Files For Divorce After 3 Years Of Marriage!
Old-school rapper MC Lyte and her husband of three years have filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, according to multiple news reports.
Lyte, whose real name is Lana Michele Moorer, petitioned the court Monday in Los Angeles, TMZ reports.
She and Marine Corp veteran and entrepreneur John Wyche married in August 2017 at a beach resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The two met more than a year earlier on Match.com. Their friend Kelly Price sang at the wedding. The Blast reports that Wyche initially had no idea that he was dating a celebrity.
"What can I say, except thank you Lord!! … It's been a long time, this single life, and I thank you all for your prayers and kind words of hope," Lyte said then. "God has sent me true love. For all of you waiting on LOVE — don't give up — keep God first and he will see that you meet your match."

The couple share no children. Lyte is a hip-hop pioneer and one of the first female rappers.
She burst on the scene in 1986 at age 16 with a hit single titled “I Cram to Understand.” Two years later she became the first woman to release a full rap album ― the critically acclaimed “Lyte as a Rock.”
Lyte has produced eight studio albums through the years, most of them in the 1990s, and she has been nominated twice for a Grammy, in 1994 and 2004.
A born storyteller, Lyte delivered her rhymes in an authoritative tone, topped by a thick New York accent that’s immediately recognizable.

The San Jose Mercury News this month ranked her #6 on its list of the Top 10 female artists of all time, placing her ahead of Da Brat, and right behind singer Lauryn Hill.
"She's an absolute trailblazer in the genre, whose many accomplishments include being widely regarded as the first female solo artist to release a full-length album" Jim Harrington writes.

For the past 20 years Lyte has put together a steady acting career in movies and television.
She turns 50 in October

Washington Football Team Hires First Black Team President In NFL History!
WASHINGTON -- As the NFL prepares to kick off the regular season, the Washington Football Team made a historic announcement Monday naming Jason Wright the league's first ever Black team president.
The newest addition to the Washington organization joined "Good Morning America" exclusively to discuss the opportunity and his plans for the future of the team.

"I think first and foremost it's obviously very personal for me," he said, adding that he has played football since he was seven years old. "[I] played a decent amount of time in the league and then became a businessman and cut my teeth in some of the best business schools. I have been helping some of the most complex and important organizations around the world transform over the last few years, so for me it's personal and an opportunity to bring together my two worlds in a really unique way, at a unique time."
"The fact that I happen to be Black and the most qualified person for this is a boost," Wright said.

Wright also shared his perspective on joining the team amidst turmoil and shared his plans as the new president for making changes from the inside out.
"Part of what excited me about taking this role -- we had a phrase when we played that said, 'You don't talk about it, you be about it,' -- and I think what I've seen from Dan and Tonya Snyder in the hiring of coach Rivera and some of the decisions they've made, to have an independent investigator come in around the sexual harassment allegations, there are actual shifts in action that suggest it's a new day, and that's why I'm excited to take this on," Wright explained.
What will the Washington Redskins' new name be? Here's what we know about the change coming to one of the NFL's oldest franchises.

"It's a culture transformation first to make sure that we have an organization that people want to be a part of and that itself will start to expand the value of the franchise and make the good things happen," he added.
The new leader joins the franchise after seven years in the league as a running back who was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent and played with the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals.

His responsibilities will include leading the organization's business divisions, including operations, finance, sales and marketing, the team said Monday.
"The transformation of the Washington Football Team is happening across all aspects of the organization - from football to operations to branding to culture - and will make us a truly modern and aspirational franchise," said Wright in a statement.
At 38, Wright is also currently the youngest team president in the league and the fourth former NFL player to become president of a team.
During his career in the NFL, Wright was a team captain and NFLPA player representative for the Arizona Cardinals during the 2011 NFL lockout.

He has a B.A. in psychology from Northwestern University, where he was an Academic All-American student-athlete, a two-time All-Big Ten football selection, and the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
He received his M.B.A. in Operations and Finance, with honors, from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

"If I could custom design a leader for this important time in our history, it would be Jason. His experience as a former player, coupled with his business acumen, gives him a perspective that is unrivaled in the league," Washington Football Team owner, Dan Snyder, said in a statement.
"We will not rest until we are a championship caliber team, on and off the field. Jason has a proven track record in helping businesses transform culturally, operationally and financially," Snyder said. "He is a proactive and assertive advocate for inclusion of all people and will set new standards for our organization, and for the league. There could not be a better duo than Jason Wright and Coach Ron Rivera as we usher in a new era for Washington Football."

The latest shakeup comes on the heels of the organization's name change and internal investigation into allegations of sexual and verbal harassment as it looks to make a fresh start in the team's new chapter.
The decision comes after months of turmoil for the league's Washington, D.C. franchise under owner Dan Snyder who has faced mounting pressure to sell the team after a series of scandals for the former "Redskins."

Snyder, who once vowed to never change the controversial name was the center of direct backlash amid calls for racial justice, but after sponsors like FedEx, Nike and Pepsi all added to the pressure, the organization eventually renamed the team temporarily ahead of the upcoming season until it decides on a permanent one.
The team is also the subject of an internal investigation amid sexual and verbal harassment allegations made by 15 former employees to the Washington Post.
Multiple top-level employees who stood accused of misconduct are now no longer part of the Washington Football Team organization.

The team's owner said in a statement to the Post that the behavior described, "has no place in our franchise or society" and the team plans to institute "new policies and procedures."
While the new president could not reveal the highly-anticipated new name for the team, he did explain the greater signficance that comes with it.
"In truth what we're actually doing is much more than a new name. It's actually a new identity, a new way of engaging with the world," Wright said. "It's going to inform the way we embed in the community, the way we engage with fans, and so it's much bigger than just a name or logo or whatever you're going to put on the jersey."

He added that "it's going to be a longer process" that will engage fans and sponsors "intensely."
"By the end of this it will be a community decision we make as a Washington Football community and I'm really excited to dive in," he said.
As full contact training camp begins today for players amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Wright said he is confident in the plans from the NFL.
"I'd have to have perfect foresight to say, 'We know it's going to go perfectly well.' I am confident in the plans that have been laid by the team, confident in the plans that have come down from the league. It's clear we're going to execute with excellence, but it would be the utmost hubris to say we know it's going to go perfectly," he said candidly.
Wright added that they have to be "data driven" and adjust daily.

"We're going to have to be agile, we're going to have to be quick on our feet to shift in how we operate to make sure that our players, our staff and everybody around this operation is safe," he said. "The health and safety is absolutely first. So I like where we're at but we're going to monitor it day by day.

Jennifer Hudson Helps 2K Chicago Youngsters With School Supplies!
Jennifer Hudson has distributed over 2,000 backpacks of school supplies to disadvantaged children.
The “Spotlight” hitmaker and her sister Julia were joined by a group of volunteers for their 10th annual Hatch Day in Chicago on Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, which saw them help out kids in need via their Julian D. King Gift Foundation, even though they had to do things differently this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hudson explained in a video shared to Instagram: “We’re still out there this Hatch Day, just in a different way. We’re going to hit these streets and sneak up on y’all. And we’re going to drive by with backpacks, because we don’t need crowds this year, but we will want to make sure we service the children.
“We’re getting out there. Everybody is out here working, making it happen.

“Drop your location, and we’re going to drop you a backpack and school supplies for what you need during this pandemic, because our kids still gotta go and grow to school. And we support that.”
Hatch Day takes place on what would have been Hudson’s nephew Julian’s birthday, but he was tragically murdered, along with the 38-year-old star’s mother and brother.
And the Dreamgirls actress and her sister — who was Julian’s mother — made sure they took the time to honor him.
Sharing photos from their celebration of what would have been her relative’s 19th birthday, Hudson — who has 11-year-old David with former partner David Otunga — wrote on Instagram: “Oh but we made it thru it all! Although it was very different this year with all that’s going on ! We went to @juleyah house and celebrated #Julian d.king bday , he woulda been 19 ! My munch made his cousin cake , which made it even more special !

“On this Hatch day many kids in chicago was still blessed ! Happy heavenly birthday nephew !! We will always honor and uphold your memory ! Until next time guys ! P.s I been around these kids to long ! Haha.”

The Julian D. King Gift Foundation was established in honor of the youngster to provide stability, support and positive experiences for children of all backgrounds to help enable them to grow to be productive, confident and happy adults.
Every year, the charity collects and distributes school supplies and Christmas presents, and this year, as well as the usual backpacks, they also distributed hand sanitizer, face masks and tablets to students.

Three Top Producers Were Let Go From 'Ellen DeGeneres Show' Amid Toxic Work Investigation!
Three producers from The Ellen DeGeneres Show were let go and will no longer be affiliated with the talk show, Variety reports.
Executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman will not be returning to the show when production kicks off again.

However, veterans Mary Connelly, Andy Lassner and Derek Westervelt will remain with the talk show.
The news was announced to staff on Monday (August 17), after reports had been made about the toxic environment and treatment of staff in the recent months
Just last week, Mary and Andy addressed the ongoing investigation and said that the show would go on.
“They said a lot of [the claims are] true and a lot of it is not true,” a source revealed. “They said we are handling everything [and] things will be very different now. … A show that brings so much happiness and fun, it should be a happy show to work on.”

Last month, Ellen penned a letter to her staff about the situation, promising to correct the issues and be more responsible for the future.

Michelle Obama Summons The Democratic Faithful A Searing DNC Keynote Speech!
WASHINGTON -- Michelle Obama had one message for Americans at Monday night’s Democratic National Convention: “If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don’t make a change in this election.” It was a dire warning, but it captured the essence of a speech marked by a sense of urgency and bleak realism.

The former first lady painted a picture of what she said young people, including her two daughters, see around them in America today.
“They see people shouting in grocery stores, unwilling to wear a mask to keep us all safe,” said Obama, in the prerecorded speech. “They see an entitlement that says only certain people belong here, that greed is good, and winning is everything because as long as you come out on top, it doesn’t matter what happens to everyone else.”
“Sadly, this is the America that is on display for the next generation,” she said. “That’s not just disappointing; it’s downright infuriating.”

Obama has long been admired on both sides of the aisle for her ability to deliver inspiring and motivating political speeches. To this day, she remains one of the most sought after campaign surrogates in all of politics.
But if viewers tuned into the Democratic convention Monday expecting to see the same warm, welcoming, “Mom-in-chief” version of Michelle Obama that they had grown accustomed to during Obama’s eight years in the White House, they were in for a wake-up call.

Obama herself seemed to acknowledge this, describing how she reframes one of her best known phrases, “when they go low, we go high,” when people ask her today how to “go high” in the face of a president like Donald Trump.
“Going high does not mean putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty. Going high means taking the harder path. It means scraping and clawing our way to that mountain top,” Obama said.

“Going high means standing fierce against hatred ... And going high means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free: the cold hard truth.”
The purpose of the Democratic convention all this week is to nominate, and ostensibly celebrate, the party’s presidential ticket of former Vice President Joe Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris. But Obama didn’t even mention Biden until halfway into her speech.
After praising Biden for his empathy and fortitude, Obama said, “Now, Joe is not perfect. And he’d be the first to tell you that. But there is no perfect candidate, no perfect president.”

Obama didn’t mention Harris, who is the first Black woman ever nominated to a major party ticket. Obama’s speech was reportedly taped before Harris was announced as Biden’s running mate last Tuesday.
Obama also warned that voter suppression tactics are already underway. “Right now, folks who know they cannot win fair and square at the ballot box are doing everything they can to stop us from voting. They’re closing down polling places in minority neighborhoods. They’re purging voter rolls. They’re sending people out to intimidate voters, and they’re lying about the security of our ballots,” she said.
Her warning echoed remarks her husband, former President Barack Obama, had made about voter suppression during his recent eulogy for the late civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (Ga.).

“If we want to keep the possibility of progress alive in our time, if we want to be able to look our children in the eye after this election, we have got to reassert our place in American history,” Obama said in the last lines of her speech. “And we have got to do everything we can to elect my friend, Joe Biden, as the next president of the United States.”

Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the convention keynote on Tuesday.

Katt Williams’ Powerful Supreme Monologue Is Required Viewing for All!
Katt Williams’ recent standup set for Supreme might not have delivered his usual barrage of laughs. But he did give one of the most incisive commentaries on the pandemic, the president, and the Black Lives Matter movement – albeit to an empty crowd.

Donning a Tekashi-esque rainbow wig and backed by JAY-Z’s “Public Service Announcement,” the veteran comedian began his monologue by skewering the President’s handling of the coronavirus. “Right now, we have a perfectly suitable clown running the free world” he lamented. “We got a guy whose advice included things that no decent crackhead would tell you to do with a gunshot wound. The man said if you have bleach, rub it on yourself. Sprinkle some in your eye. You see any UV light, walk in front of it. But these are serious times. The president is a clown.” Watch HERE.

He then went on to stress the urgency of wearing a mask, rightly pointing out, “It’s an airborne virus, folks. If you breathe air, put on a mask. And because we can all agree that breathing is important.” Here, Williams turned to the murder of George Floyd who died earlier this year when police officer Derek Chauvin forcibly held his knee on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, while other officers knelt on his back. “We can all agree that you putting your knee on a man’s neck for eight minutes is just murder. Just televised murder,” he said.
Williams joked that he left most of his jokes in quarantine. But he did bring a compelling case for Americans to get out and vote for in the US elections on Tuesday, 3 November. “If you got some information out of it, I appreciate that,” he said, adding, “I’ve already done more than an elected official.”

If you’re concerned about mailing your vote due to the defunding of the USPS, there are still ways to make sure your vote gets counted. States also allow in-person drop-off at your county clerk, registrar, or local Board of Election.

Kim Kardashian West Advocates For Rapper C-Murder's Release From Prison!
Kim Kardashian West is advocating for the release of New Orleans rapper C-Murder, who she says was wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, was accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old named Steve Thomas at a nightclub in 2002, according to The Associated Press. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 2009 and is serving a life sentence in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. However, since his conviction, two key eyewitnesses have recanted their original testimony, the AP reported.

"The jury convicted Corey 10-2 and he was sentenced him to life in prison. If his trial was today, the jury would have had to be unanimous for him to be convicted," Kardashian West tweeted Sunday, referring to the Supreme Court's April decision that jury verdicts in trials for serious crimes must be unanimous."Since his trial, witnesses have recanted, new evidence of his potential innocence has come to light, and there are claims of jurors being pressured into voting to convict."
Kenneth Jordan, one of the key witnesses, claimed while recanting his testimony in 2018 that detectives pressured him to lie under oath or else he would face a 10-year sentence on unrelated criminal charges, NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans reported.

"I know the individual that I saw shoot the gun was not Corey Miller," Jordan said at the time.
The second key witness, Darnell Jordan, also claimed that he felt pressured to lie under oath in 2018, WDSU reported. Although they share a last name, the witnesses are not related to each other.
"True justice for the young man requires that the person who actually killed him be held responsible and that Corey Miller be returned home to his kids," Kardashian West tweeted.

Miller, the brother of rapper Master P, has consistently maintained his innocence.

"'I've been snatched away from my family, separated from my kids, from my career, everything," Miller told WDSU in 2018. "And I just want it back."
Kardashian West said she would be working with the singer Monica, who was dating Miller at the time of his arrest, as well as Jessica Jackson and Erin Haney of the REFORM Alliance, an organization that aims to "dramatically reduce the number of people who are unjustly under the control of the criminal justice system."

"My heart goes out to the family of Steve Thomas," Kardashian West wrote. "I can only imagine how hard this is and my intention is never to open up this painful wound but to help find the truth behind this tragedy."
Kardashian West, who has been studying to become a lawyer, has been working with advocates for criminal justice reform for several years and played a role in the 2018 release of Alice Marie Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender who had been serving a life sentence since 1996. President Donald Trump commuted Johnson's sentence days after Kardashian West lobbied him.

Kardashian West was also instrumental in helping commute the life sentences of more than a dozen other first-time nonviolent drug defenders by providing financial assistance to The Decarceration Collective, a nonprofit law firm.

Tavis Smiley to Pay $1.5M to PBS Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations!
A jury decided Wednesday that former television talk show host Tavis Smiley, who was fired amid allegations of workplace sexual misconduct at the height of the #MeToo movement, must pay about $1.5 million to his former employer, the Public Broadcasting Service.
Smiley was suspended in December 2017 and later fired from the PBS after the network said it had received multiple, credible allegations of misconduct by Smiley on his late-night interview show. He was on air with PBS for more than a decade, broadcast to more than 200 stations nationwide. Smiley, who is black, was the only minority to have served as the solo host in the history of the network, according to his lawsuit.

He was fired amid the wave of#MeToo reports of sexual misconduct in the workplace by powerful figures in movies, media and politics that began with allegations against Harvey Weinstein and also led to the departure of Smiley’s fellow PBS talk-show host Charlie Rose. Weinstein has been convicted in New York City ofrape and sexual assault against two women and will be sentenced next week.
Smiley first sued PBS in D.C. Superior Court, contending that racial bias contributed to his dismissal and he was wrongly terminated without proof. He acknowledged having romantic relationships with colleagues over his career, but says they were consensual. He sought $1 million. The network counter-sued, arguing in part that Smiley owed the network for a season that didn't air.

At issue was the network's “morals” clause, which bars romantic relationships in the office and also disallows employees from acting in a way that would impact the employee or network in a negative way.
Jurors heard testimony from six female employees who described misconduct claims. Smiley denied the allegations. The jury deliberated for about a day before reaching a verdict in the civil case.
Smiley's attorneys said they would appeal. “We are disappointed in the jury’s verdict but respect the process," said attorney John Rubiner.
PBS later said in a statement the network was pleased with the jury's decision.

“PBS expects our producing partners to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect," the network said. "It was important for us to ensure that the courageous women who came forward were able to share their stories and that we continue to uphold the values and standards of our organization.”
