Gabrielle Union for Variety - May 2020!
Gabrielle Union has broken her silence on the drama surrounding her exit from America’s Got Talent (AGT) last year in an interview with Variety.
Last November, it was announced that Union and Julianne Hough would not be returning to AGT next season. Days later, Variety published a report claiming there was a “toxic culture” on the set of AGT that included racist jokes and excessive focus on female judges’ appearances.
The new interview was published on Wednesday, the same day an investigation of her complaints of racism on the set of the show concluded that her allegations were unfounded, according to NBC and the show’s producers.
“I signed up for the experience of being a part of a show that hails itself as the biggest stage in the world,” Union told the outlet. “Super diverse, and one about giving people an opportunity to shine where they otherwise probably wouldn’t. What could go wrong?”
The Being Mary Jane actor continued, “There are so many people who are committed to making NBCUniversal and Comcast different, who truly want to be a part of the solution and on the right side of history. … In the same breath, there are some people who want the wheels of change to come to a grinding halt because they feel that their privilege is being challenged.”
Union had previously said she clashed with head judge Simon Cowell due to her concerns about his smoking cigarettes inside the theatre where the show filmed. It’s against the law in California for an employer to allow smoking in a workplace.
The Bring It On actor addressed Cowell’s smoking again, saying, “I couldn’t escape.”
“I ended up staying sick for two months straight. It was a cold that lingered, and turned into bronchitis, because I couldn’t shake it. It impacted my voice, which affects my ability to do my job,” she added.

New report says Simon Cowell’s smoking among reasons for clash with Gabrielle Union on ‘AGT’
“It was challenging to tend to my illness without being made to feel like I’m responsible for my own sickness. It put me in a position from day one where I felt othered. I felt isolated. I felt singled out as being difficult, when I’m asking for basic laws to be followed. I want to come to work and be healthy and safe and listened to,” she said.
Cowell’s spokesperson told Variety that “when he was directly informed of the smoking complaint during the first couple of days of the season, he immediately changed his behaviour and the issue was never raised again.”
Union also addressed Jay Leno, who was a guest judge on Season 14 and she alleged that he made an inappropriate joke. Leno has declined to comment on the matter.
“My first big interview in this industry, the first person who allowed me to come on their talk show, was Jay Leno. I’ve always held him in high regard, but I was not prepared for his joke,” Union said. “I gasped. I froze. Other things had already happened, but at this point, it was so wildly racist.”
She said production told her, “We’ll delete it. We’ll edit it out.”
“You cannot edit out what we just experienced. There is not an edit button in my brain or in my soul. To experience this kind of racism at my job and there be nothing done about it, no discipline, no companywide email, no reminder of what is appropriate in the workplace?” she said.
Union said that her goal now is to enact real change at shows like AGT.
“It starts from the top down,” she said. “My goal is to create the happiest, most high-functioning, inclusive, protected and healthy example of a workplace.”
NBC and AGT producers said the outside review found that Union’s claims had “no bearing” on the show’s decision to drop her as a judge, said the network and production companies FremantleMedia and Syco in a joint statement Wednesday. Syco is series host and producer Cowell’s joint venture with Sony Music.
Union appeared on the talent showcase for a season, until she and fellow freshman judge Hough weren’t asked to return.
Variety previously reported that Union, who is black, believed she was fired because she had asked NBC and the show’s producers to respond to an environment that tolerated racist jokes and remarks. That included what Union said were multiple notes from producers saying she was wearing her hair “too black” for the AGT audience.
NBC sought the investigation into Union’s accusations.
“Through the investigation process, it has been revealed that no one associated with the show made any insensitive or derogatory remarks about Ms. Union’s appearance, and that neither race nor gender was a contributing factor in the advancement or elimination of contestants at any time,” NBC and the producers said.
The findings, which were based on some 30 interviews, did highlight “some areas in which reporting processes could be improved,” the companies said without offering details.
#RHOA: Porsha Williams Hits The Streets In Atlanta To Protest George Floyd’s Murder
“Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Porsha Williams is protesting in Atlanta and speaking out against the murder of George Floyd.
Andy Cohen shared a video of Porsha being interviewed on the local news earlier today. The reality star, holding a sign “We Matter”, said, “With everything that is going on today I’m just like anybody else. I may be more well-known, but I am here to be the voice for the voiceless. What is going on in black America is not okay. We just want to live. I am here today to make sure that everybody understands black lives matter and we want justice for George Floyd’s family. I know one cop has been arrested we would like the other cops to be arrested for murder. And we will be protesting here until it’s done.”
She added, “we are sitting out here for anybody any family who has suffered from police brutality. We are done, we are tired, we are not going to take it anyone. We are going to march and lift our voice. We are going to be heard.”
Porsha was one of many celebrities who took the street to join the protest across the country as the outrage grows over George Floyd’s death.
On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis Police Officers responded to an alleged forgery in progress committed by George Floyd. Once they arrived, Floyd was placed in handcuffs and placed in the back of a cop car. At one point, former officer Derek Chauvin takes him out of the car and forcefully puts Floyd on the ground. He then places his knee on Floyd’s neck and holds it there for over 8 minutes despite pleas from bystanders and Floyd screaming, “I can’t breathe.”
As bystanders started walking by shouted at the officers to remove the knee. Floyd could be heard shouting “I can’t breathe” but the officers did nothing.
Another officer, Tou Thao, is seen scolding bystanders and telling them to back off. He refused to listen to the woman who said she works for the fire department. Once the ambulance arrives, they drag Floyd’s body onto a stretcher. He was pronounced dead once he arrived at the hospital.
Two other officers, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were involved in the arrest but not visible in the video.
All four officers have been fired. Chauvin was arrested and charged with charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter. Floyd’s family have called for the remaining officers to be charged immediately.
Protests across the county have continued to grow as the uproar continues over Floyd’s death.

Beyoncé, Rihanna, And Drake Speak Out After George Floyd’s Death!
Music’s biggest names are speaking out in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
As outrage and protests spread across the the United States, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Drake are using their platforms to demand justice on behalf of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man who was killed on-camera by a white police officer in Minneapolis this week.
Taking to Instagram on Friday night, Beyoncé shared an emotional message with her 147 million followers. “We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight,” said the singer, referring to the video of former officer Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes as he cried out: “I can’t breathe!”
Bey delivered a call-to-action and demanded accountability. “We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain,” she said. “I’m not only speaking to people of color. If you’re white, black, brown, or anything in between, I’m sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killings of human beings. No more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away.”
She continued, “George is all of our family in humanity. He’s family because he’s a fellow American. There have been too many times that we’ve seen these violent killings and no consequences. Yes, someone has been charged but justice is far from being achieved.”
She urged her fans to sign the Change.org petition and “continue to pray for peace, compassion, and healing for our country.” The petition has over 7 million signatures, making it the fastest-growing and largest U.S. petition in Change.org’s history.
Rihanna also reflected on the “devastation, anger, and sadness” she has been feeling in the wake of Floyd’s death. Alongside a photo of Floyd, she explained why she has avoided social media until now.
“For the last few days, the magnitude of devastation, anger, sadness I’ve felt has been overwhelming to say the least! Watching my people get murdered and lynched day after day pushed me to a heavy place in my heart! To the point of staying away from socials, just to avoid hearing the blood curdling agony in George Floyd’s voice again, begging over and over for his life!!!” she wrote.
She also addressed the now-former officer, who was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. “The look of enticement, the pure joy and climax on the face of this bigot, murderer, thug, pig, bum, Derek Chauvin, haunts me!! I can’t shake this! I can’t get over an ambulance pulling up to an arrest, a paramedic checking a pulse without removing the very thing that’s hindering it!”
She questioned the injustice and consequences of murder. “Is this that fucking normal??? If intentional MURDER is the fit consequence for ‘drugs’ or ‘resisting arrest’….then what’s the fit consequence for MURDER???!” she asked, while tagging the names of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, two other unarmed African-Americans who were killed in recent weeks.
Rihanna’s friend and collaborator Drake also honored Floyd by sharing “Affirmation,” a powerful poem by Assata Shakur. “Rest in heaven George Floyd 🌹,” he captioned his post.
While speaking with Lil Wayne on Young Money Radio on Friday, Dr. Dre weighed in on Floyd’s death. “That situation, it hurt my heart. My heart is still aching. It felt like that cop had his knee on all our necks, meaning black men. It’s extremely painful because it keeps going on,” said the hip-hop icon.
However, he was hopeful that this could be a turning point. “What can happen to make this stop? It’s baffling, but it really feels like something is going to happen now, to at least put us in the area where we can start talking about a way to make this thing stop,” added Dre. “I think this one could be the one because I’m seeing white people out there protesting as well… which is a good thing. They should be. You said it right. Any decent human being should see that and go, ‘F**k this.” Enough is enough.'”'

The 50-year-old filmmaker took to his social media accounts to call for an end of the violent protests that are currently going on around the country, saying he stands with Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for calling for an end to the violence.
“I’m not in Atlanta, but if I were I would have been standing with our Mayor! But there was nothing I could say better than what Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said last night! Please, please stop this violence!! Looting is NOT THE ANSWER!!!!” Tyler wrote.
“And listen to me, be careful where you are getting your information to JOIN protests!!” Tyler continued. “There are people and other countries who are posting things pretending to be US, pretending to stand for peaceful protest, but they are trying to incite us into violence and chaos to try and do more harm!! Kylie Jenner and Kris Jenner Are Reportedly "Freaking Out" Over Forbes' Claims She Lied About Money!
Kylie Jenner and Kris Jenner are reportedly "freaking out" about Forbes' claim that Kylie lied about being a billionaire.
Forbes dropped a bombshell story yesterday accusing Kylie of inflating her personal wealth.
So, uh, yesterday Forbes casually dropped an article titled "Inside Kylie Jenner's Web of Lies—and Why She's No Longer a Billionaire," basically accusing Kylie of inflating her personal wealth and straight-up forging her tax returns. Casual.
Kylie wasted no time shutting down the magazine, but The Sun reports that she and her momager Kris Jenner are actually pretty stressed: "Kris and Kylie are freaking out and fear that this is going to hurt their brand, and even worse, they could be in trouble with the government," a source says, adding that they are "definitely worried."
To be honest, Kylie didn't seem that worried on Twitter, and instead accused Forbes of making inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions about her company's finances.
“What am i even waking up to," she wrote in a series of tweets. "i thought this was a reputable site…all i see are a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol. i’ve never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. period. 'even creating tax returns that were likely forged’ that’s your proof? so you just THOUGHT they were forged? like actually what am i reading. but okay. i am blessed beyond my years, i have a beautiful daughter and a successful business and i’m doing perfectly fine. i can name a list of 100 things more important right now than fixating on how much money i have."
This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
As a reminder, Forbes claims Kylie Cosmetics “is significantly smaller and less profitable than the family has spent years leading the cosmetics industry and media outlets to believe,” that the Jenners "likely forged" tax returns, and that Kylie "is not a billionaire."
‘Spider-Man’ Actor Shameik Moore Under Fire For Saying Rosa Parks “Should Have Taken A Cab”!
Spider-Man actor Shameik Moore has been condemned for suggesting Rosa Parks should have travelled in a black-owned taxi company rather than protest during the Civil Rights Movement in 1955.
The actor also argued that black people should no longer blame racism for the cause of police brutality, following the high-profile death of George Floyd in the US this week.
The Get Down actor, who voiced the Marvel superhero in 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, posted a lengthy Twitter thread telling his black followers how best to “avoid” being killed by police.
He wrote: “We have to work on our community before blaming everything on ‘racist’ and police. 1… there is STILL black on black violence that needs to be addressed… and 2.. if we KNOW that the wrong white person could change our whole life with a false accusation..WHY DO WE GIVE THEM THE ENERGY THEY WANT?”
Defending his tweets, Moore emphasised that he “refuses to feel like a victim” or “have a slave mentality.” He also claimed that he does not face danger in his daily life as he “knows how to carry [himself] in tuff [sic] situations”.
He then took to Instagram Live to clarify his tweets, arguing that they were “taken out of context”.
In the live broadcast, he said: “Rosa Parks, sitting at the front of the bus, right?. What we don’t know as a black community is, [there were] black-owned taxi cabs and black buses that could have been used during that time. This is something a lot of people might not want to hear.”
His comments came after the public outpouring of anger and calls for justice over his death.
Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis on Monday (May 25) following an altercation with police officers. Floyd, who was African American, was killed when a white police officer appeared to kneel on his neck as he lay on the ground during an arrest.
ABC Insiders ‘Extremely Worried’ Ryan Seacrest Is ‘Overdoing It’!
Known as the hardest-working man in show business, Ryan Seacrest rarely takes a day off. So when he took an unscheduled one from co-hosting “Live” with Kelly Ripa on May 18, there was cause for alarm at the show’s network.
An ABC source said that some members of the show’s production team were made aware of Seacrest’s absence less than 30 minutes before they were to go live on air.
“It was a last-minute thing and there was a sense of panic at ABC when we were told that Ryan couldn’t make it that morning,” the ABC source revealed.
Just hours earlier, the 45-year-old had prompted serious fears for his health during the “American Idol” finale — when, while broadcasting from his Los Angeles home, he struggled with words, seemed confused and had a visibly droopy right eye.
Seacrest’s reps were forced to deny that the host had suffered a stroke amid frantic tweets from worried fans.
The next morning, when Seacrest had to bow out, Ripa’s actor-husband, Mark Consuelos, was able to quickly step in alongside his wife at their vacation house on the Caribbean island of Mustique.
“Live” is set to go on a weeks-long scheduled hiatus next month, and sources close to Seacrest and within ABC say the timing couldn’t be better.
“There are people at the network who are extremely worried that he is overdoing it,” said the ABC source.
Seacrest has been spread thin, by choice, for a long time. Not only does he co-host “Live” every weekday, he also has a syndicated radio show, “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” which runs for five hours Monday to Friday, as well as the weekly “American Top 40” music-radio countdown program.
He hosts “American Idol” and various specials — including two recent Disney Sing-A-Longs and “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” — as part of his multimillion-dollar three-year deal with ABC. He hosts E!’s awards-show red carpet coverage, as well as contributing to the same for ABC.
His eponymous production company gave the world all the Kardashian family reality shows and spinoffs on E! (Seacrest has referred to this as his “biggest contribution to the world”), plus series such as “Shahs of Sunset” on Bravo. He has skin-care and clothing lines, among several other business ventures.
Perhaps no one should have been surprised when Seacrest returned to “Live” on May 19 and admitted to suffering from exhaustion.
Although he brushed it off — thanking viewers for their well-wishes and saying “I got a day off to relax” — an ABC/Disney source admitted: “People are worried. That ‘Idol’ moment was extremely disconcerting.”
According to a friend, his on-air breakdown is likely a culmination of years of workaholic tendencies catching up with him.
“People underestimate just how much work Ryan puts in every day. [Right now,] he wakes up at 4 a.m., has producer meetings by 5 a.m. and has to be ready to film at 6 a.m. LA time as ‘Live’ goes on air at 9 a.m. EST. Add the radio show every day, in addition to hosting “Idol” and additional content for his platforms,” said the friend. “He has definitely had to adjust his body clock.
“While some of us can turn off or take a break throughout our workday, he almost always has a camera on him or a microphone in his hand. He’s always on.”
“There are people at the network worried that [Seacrest] is overdoing it.”
- ABC source on Ryan Seacrest skipping his “Live” show with Kelly Ripa
But other sources say Seacrest’s schedule is actually easier during the pandemic than it has been in the past, and wonder if there’s more to the story. Previously, Seacrest had to travel a couple days a week between Los Angeles and New York City, where he lives most of the time. He would record “Idol” in LA, then catch a red-eye to NYC to record “Live” and his radio shows.
But since March, Seacrest has been in lockdown at the Southern California estate he bought from good pal Ellen DeGeneres for $37 million and recording everything from his home studio.
“This whole time [he] has been in his house in LA because of the pandemic. It’s been a lot of shooting, but people internally . . . are concerned about his fatigue,” said the television-industry insider. “Everyone is rooting for him to be OK and knows he’s a hard worker and juggling a lot of things — but he’s a hard worker with no commute.”
Ripa, meanwhile, is said to care very much for Seacrest — “Kelly and Ryan really like each other,” said the ABC source. “It’s not like with [Ripa’s former co-host] Michael Strahan. They have a very good relationship.”
But there are some people within the morning show’s production team who, sources told The Post, are “frustrated” that “Live” isn’t always Seacrest’s first priority.
He joined “Live” in May 2017 following Ripa’s very public fall-out with Strahan after the former NFL star failed to tell her he was leaving the show to go to “Good Morning America” full-time.
Seacrest moved to New York City for the talk show, renting a $75,000-a-month Upper East Side property with his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Shayna Taylor, and transferring his radio shows to Manhattan.
Hill Harper ApologizesAfter Misgendering Dwyane Wade &Gabrielle Union’s Daughter
Actor Hill Harper admits he made a ‘horrible error’ after referring to Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s transgender daughter, Zaya, as a ‘young man’ on her 13th birthday.
The Good Doctor star Hill Harper, 54, is regretful for calling Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s daughter Zaya, who is a transgender female, by the wrong gender. Underneath Gabrielle’s Instagram birthday tribute for her stepdaughter on May 29, Hill wrote in a now-deleted comment, “Happy Birthday young man!! Read Letters to a Young Brother!!! Your mom wrote something in it!! You’ll love it! Have a great day!!”
Hill was immediately called out over his birthday wishes for Zaya, who celebrated her 13th birthday on Friday. Fans were also upset to see Hill give a shout-out to his self-help book, which is aimed at young men. He soon took to Twitter to apologize.
“I would like to apologize for my post. I am responsible for what gets posted and I made a horrible error,” he admitted in a tweet, shared on May 29. “I misgendered my friend’s child and I am so sorry to Zaya and the entire Wade family. It was not my intention to misgender and misrepresent her in any way. I celebrate Zaya.” HollywoodLife has reached out to Dwyane and Gabrielle’s reps; both parents have not commented on Hill’s remarks.
In the post that Hill commented on, Gabrielle had written, “Happy Birthday baby!!! I can’t believe you are 13!! @zayawade you are such an inspiration and motivation to get my butt up everyday and fight. When I’m weary, frustrated, full of rage, I see your face and your joy and you living your best life and I want that for all of us. I love you sooooo much kid!! Enjoy this day and everyday knowing you are loved, protected, respected, admired and celebrated.”
Meanwhile, Dwyane gushed over his daughter’s bravery by writing, “watching you walk in your truth and live your life your way is one of the greatest gifts I’ve been able to experience in my life.” He added, “In a world where the color of your skin is deemed a threat you continue to be the bravest person I know and I’m gonna stand by your side until there isn’t anymore standing left to do.” You can read his full touching message above!
Dwyane confirmed Zaya’s gender identity during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired on Feb. 11. “We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community,” Dwyane told Ellen DeGeneres. “We’re proud allies, as well. We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question or an issue or anything, it’s our job as parents to listen and give them the best information and feedback that we can.”
