#Empire: Actor Morocco Omari acquitted of domestic violence charge
An actor on the television show Empire has been acquitted of domestic battery in Chicago.
Morocco Omari took the stand during a two-day trial that ended with his acquittal Friday. Jurors deliberated for less than two hours. He says he "could never beat up a woman" and that his acquittal is like "an albatross lifted from my neck."
Omari was arrested in April 2017 after a 24-year-old woman who identified herself as Omari's girlfriend told police officers that he had pushed her to the ground during an argument, causing scratches on her neck and chest.
Omari described the aftermath of the allegations as "like a hurricane wiping out your house."
Omari played FBI Agent Tariq Cousins on the Fox TV show. The character was killed off last season.

J. Cole rules over the Billboard 200 with his fifth album KOD, which debuts at No. 1 with 397,000 units.
In addition to being his fifth chart-topper, KOD earns the biggest week of 2018 overall and largest week for a hip-hop album since Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. It’s also the largest streaming week this year (215,000 streaming equivalent album units).
Next up, the Fayetteville rapper plans to release a deluxe edition of KOD.

The #TimesUp Movement Launches ‘Mute R. Kelly’ Campaign
Time’s Up’s Women of Color coalition is calling on all corporations and venues to boycott R. Kelly due to numerous sexual abuse allegations over the years. On Monday (Apr. 30), the Time’s Up organization announced the #MuteRKelly initiative.
“To our fellow women of color,” reads the statement. “Together, we call on corporations and venues with ties to R. Kelly to join us and insist on safety and dignity for women of all kinds.”
The Women of Color committee includes director Ava DuVernay, television mogul Shonda Rhimes, and actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell. DuVernay addressed the initiative on Twitter, explaining the campaign’s demands and goals.
“We demand investigations into R. Kelly’s abuse allegations made by women of color + their families for two decades,” she wrote. “We call on those who profit from his music to cut ties.” Additionally, Rhimes published the same statement on her Twitter account.
Moreover, the #MuteRKelly movement hopes to reach Kelly’s label, RCA Records, streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, and concert giant Ticketmaster. Smollett-Bell expanded on these efforts in a statement to The Associated Press.
“We stand linked with our sisters and will no longer tolerate the predatory behavior of R. Kelly to go unchecked,” she said. “This is a call to action to #MuteRKelly. His music must be turned down and the voices of these brave survivors must be heard.”
John Legend co-signed the movement today. “I stand with the women of #timesup,” he wrote. “#muterkelly.” Questlove added: “Standing alongside the women and sisters in the LONG OVERDUE CANCELLATION of Rkelly. #TimesUp #MuteRKelly.”
Quavo Charged for Battery in Las Vegas Brawl After Cops View Security Footage
Migos member Quavo has been cited in the weekend brawl after performing in Las Vegas, and we’re told it was the video evidence that allowed cops to charge the rapper.
According to cops, Quavo and three other people were cited for battery against two hotel employees at the Encore Hotel & Casino.
Police say they viewed the security footage and clearly saw Quavo involved in the melee. We’re told there was no doubt that he got physical, and was issued the citation for battery.
The fight went down Sunday morning after a hotel valet asked Quavo to move his car. As reported, Cardi B was also present and had to be rushed to safety when the fists started flying.
The incident went down after Migos and Cardi B performed at Drai’s nightclub.
Mariah Carey Announces New Las Vegas Residency
Mariah Carey is returning to the venue for The Butterfly Returns residency, which begins July 5. This marks Carey’s fourth concert residency so far.
“I’m thrilled to be returning to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace with a BRAND NEW residency, THE BUTTERFLY RETURNS, beginning July 5th,” the singer wrote in an announcement tweet.

It was Sister Act Love Fest: Sheryl Lee Ralph Reunites With Lauryn Hill
It was a “Sister Act 2” reunion on Sunday night. Sheryl Lee Ralph connected with her on screen daughter, Lauryn Hill after Hill’s show during Kaya Fest in San Bernadino, Ca.
Ralph posted a photo and video of the two embracing backstage. “Rita Louise Watson, Singing does put food on the table!!”, she captioned the pic referencing a line from the film. “What a magical moment I had seeing Miss Lauryn Hill last night close out @kayafest ! She looks amazing, she sounds amazing and what beautiful children she has!! We still have that Mother Daughter vibe!”
Hill could be heard in the video telling Ralph she looked “wonderful as always” before they shared a big hug. Hill’s 19 year old daughter Selah was also seen in the background and Ralph commented that she remembers working with Hill when she was around her age.
Ralph and Hill shared the screen together in 1993 for the musical comedy sequel also starring Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Najimy.
#FashionNews: Zara Slammed for Stealing Signature Design from South African Brand
A well-known South African brand has been the target of Zara’s latest design-stealing incident, as initially pointed out by an influencer from the nation. And now, the African label is gearing up for a lawsuit.
Thebe Ikalafeng exposed the new Zara Men sock design that he says rips off one from MaXhosa by Laduma. The South African fashion label, described as an “innovative Xhosa-inspired knitwear brand,” launched the Khanyisa cardigan in March 2014 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Johannesburg. Now, the best-selling item’s design has been duplicated on socks sold at Zara stores locally, in the U.K. and in New York.
“We consulted with Shane Moore and Muhammad Patel from Moore Attorneys, one of Africa’s leading IP law firms who are handling the matter on our behalf,” MaXhosa said in a press release Monday, April 23. “They have since sent a letter to the parent company alerting them of the copyright infringement and our demands. We have taken such steps so as to avoid our works being appropriated and adapted without our consent or permission.
“Copyright infringement is a matter that we take seriously and fully aware of our intellectual property rights,” the statement continued. “We would like to thank the clients who have silently sent us proof of such infringements as they allowed us means to act. The debate as to whether we shall win the case or not remains, we stand by our decision to fight such a case. Thus, we have sent our letter of demand and we await their reply.”
A separate release revealed Maxhosa is set to meet with Zara representatives confidentially the week of May 7. It noted there will be “no new communications on this matter until further notice.”
By April 24, MaXhosa designer Laduma Ngxokolo posted on Instagram that stealing designs is Spain-based Zara’s “business model” and he and his family will return all Zara apparel they own.
“I’ve had a few copyright infringement cases in the past, and won majority of them,” he noted, “but @zara took this one to great extremes. … P.s: they’ve started removing the socks from their global site, Sandton, [South Africa] outlet, etc.”
Indeed, Inditex, Zara’s holding company, told TshisaLIVE Wednesday, April 25 that it has “the utmost respect for individual creativity and takes all claims concerning third party intellectual rights very seriously. As a preventative action, the process to immediately remove this item both from out stores and online was activated at the moment this situation was brought to our attention.
“The company has already started an internal investigation and will be in contact with MaXhosa’s representatives to clarify and resolve the situation as swiftly as possible,” it added.
Even still, social media users have been just as riled up about the scandal as Ikalafeng.
“I’m so shook! 😳🤭😦,” one user said. “Zara straight up jacked MaXhosa’s signature patterns…. like… COPY AND PASTE!! Bathong – WHO DOES THAT???? Shameless!!”
“Zara must remove Maxhosa like socks from its stores!” another tweeted. “A victory for the small guy. I love @MaXhosaByL designs. #MaXhosa @eNCA.”
“That’s Zara’s entire business model,” another less surprised person said, “Not sure why people are surprised. EVERYTHING in store is copy and paste. Of course they were going to take Asian and Africa’s best styles — google and see how frustrated European designers are with the brand.”
And the outrage is warranted, as this is not the first time Zara has come under fire for ripping off designs.
In 2016, Business Insider reported the label was under siege for allegedly stealing designs from independent designer Tuesday Bassen and was also called out for debuting a line similar to Kayne West’s Yeezy brand. And in 2014, Zara was accused of stealing designs from now-defunct British label Sibling; it was under fire for doing the same with New York street designer Patrick Waldo in 2012.
Stephen Curry Headed to Hollywood After New Deal With Sony Pictures
NBA star Stephen Curry is heading to Hollywood in a big way.
Sony Pictures Entertainment announced Monday that it has struck a deal with the Golden State Warriors All-Star guard to produce television, film and possibly gaming projects.
A press release states Curry and the company he has co-founded, Unanimous Media, will have their production headquarters on the Sony backlot in Culver City, California.
The projects developed by Curry’s company will focus on family, faith, and sports themes.
No specific projects were announced Monday, but Curry says in a statement he wants to use the deal “to affect the world positively.”
Curry and the Warriors have a 3-1 lead in their first round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs.
#NFLDraft: Shaquem Griffin Has become the First Player with One Hand to be Drafted in the NFL
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Shaquem Griffin came back. The crowd loved it.
Players in attendance not selected in the first two days of the NFL draft usually head out of town before the fourth through seventh rounds.
Griffin, who sat through 100 names being called in the first three rounds, wasn’t in AT&T Stadium on Saturday.
Then he was after Seattle spent the 141st overall selection on the Central Florida linebacker who has no left hand.
That fifth-round choice, announced in Seattle, drew loud cheers from fans at Jerry’s World.
Griffin, whose left hand was amputated when he was young, has become the feel-good story this year and one of the most popular players in this draft because of his perseverance, outgoing personality and, of course, his talent.
“I mean that was amazing,” Griffin said. “To even have an opportunity to come back, I didn’t think I was going to be able to come back and do it … I don’t remember seeing too many people who have left and came back.
“That was the most amazing experience of my entire life. Me thinking about it, that moment, to be up on that stage and having the crowd go crazy, it was like we had won the Peach Bowl all over again. It was nuts.”
Griffin helped UCF go undefeated last season, then blew through the NFL combine with a 4.38 in the 40, sensational lifting work with his prosthetic, and a can-do attitude.
Exactly the sort of player the Seahawks seem to find; they drafted his twin brother, Shaquill, out of UCF last year.
“It’s been a really good experience,” Shaquem said. “I would have been crazy to turn an experience down like this. I’m just glad I was one of the selected few to be here.”
Griffin had one of the more unusual ways of finding out he was chosen.
“I was using the restroom and my brother came and tackled me with my cellphone, saying ‘answer it, answer it,’ and I looked, and that’s when tears started pouring down,” Griffin explained.
“I literally went to use the restroom and that’s when my brother busted in and tackled me. I think I was more scared of him tackling me in the bathroom and not knowing what was happening than anything.”
Griffin received, by far, the biggest cheers of the day — louder even than when the Cowboys’ selections were announced. And he made a promise: “Great things are coming to Seattle.”
Griffin’s selection early in the fifth round enlivened a day in which most picks are relatively unknown or obscure players. Not all, though.
Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst was taken one spot in front of Griffin by Oakland. The All-American would have gone much earlier, but a heart condition was discovered at the combine, dropping him far down draft boards.
He had 5½ sacks as an interior rusher and led all nose tackles and defensive tackles with 49 total quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.
“It’s tough thinking that you’re one of the top players in the draft and having good tape and everything like that, just having to wait,” Hurst said. “You believe you’re better than guys who go ahead of you is tough. I’m just happy to be in the right place and a great organization.”
As for his health, “I’m ready to go right now.”
Another All-American, Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell, was taken by Denver at No. 106. He’s not considered quick, but he is active and seemed to be in on every tackle for the Hawkeyes.
“A lot of that is instincts. A lot of film watching for me,” he said. “It really helped me because I did not run the fastest time ever, not even close. I had to be able to make up from somewhere else.”
