SAD NEWS! Michael Sam is stepping away from Football for Mental Health Reasons!
Michael Sam left the CFL's Alouettes for "personal reasons" in June. The former Missouri defensive end is stepping away once again.
Citing mental health reasons, Sam announced Friday he would leave the team. He is hopeful he can be back on the field soon. See his tweets below.
Sam, the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL Draft and a former SEC Defensive Player of the Year. After he came out in February of 2014, the NFL said in a statement that "we admire Michael Sam's honesty and courage."
Sam became the first openly gay football player drafted by an NFL team when he was picked by the Rams in the seventh round. The selection raised hopes among some gay rights advocates that attitudes in professional sports have changed. He later signed a two-year deal with Montreal in May but failed to make a tackle in his first live game action in the CFL.
After being taken by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, Sam was released prior to the start of the season. He then spent seven weeks on the Cowboys' practice squad before being released again. Sam competed in ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" earlier this year.
We wish him the best as he works on himself!
