Folks came together for UNITY and PRAISE in Charleston SC at Mother Emanuel AME!
The congregation at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal swayed and sang and welcomed the world into their sanctuary Sunday, holding the first worship service since a gunman opened fire during a Bible study and killed nine church members.
Messages of love, recovery and healing were interspersed throughout the service, which was marked by fervent singing and shouting, so much so that many congregants waved small fans in front of their faces. For added security, police officers stood watch over the worshippers at the church known as "Mother Emanuel" because it is one of the oldest black congregations in the South.
"It has been tough. It's been rough. Some of us have been downright angry, but through it all, God has sustained us and has encouraged us. Let us not grow weary in well-doing," said the Rev. Norvel Goff, a presiding elder of the 7th District AME Church in South Carolina.
Goff was appointed to lead the historic Charleston church after Emanuel's senior pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, was shot and killed. A black sheet was draped over his usual chair, which sat empty Sunday. At least one parishioner kneeled down in front of it and prayed.
Pinckney was also a state senator and married father of two children. Goff acknowledged Father's Day and reminded people that God was the ultimate father of these nine families.
"The blood of the `Mother Emanuel 9' requires us to work until not only justice in this case, but for those who are still living in the margin of life, those who are less fortunate than ourselves," he said.
Sunday marked the first service at Emanuel since Dylann Roof, 21, sat among a Bible study group for about an hour Wednesday night before declaring that he targeted them because they were black and opening fire, authorities said.
As Emanuel's congregation belted out a gospel hymn, church bells rang throughout downtown in this "Holy City" - which garnered the nickname because of the numerous churches here. Later Sunday, people were expected to gather on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to join hands in solidarity.
The bridge is named after a former state lawmaker and a vocal Confederate flag supporter.
Photographs of Roof in a purported manifesto showed him holding Confederate flags and a burning American flag. The manifesto also contained hate-filled writings the author said were inspired in part by the killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder. The author of the manifesto said he was in the right.
Martin's family said in a statement Sunday: "It is very unfortunate that an individual with such a vile mind and clear criminal intent would dare seek to undermine our mission of peace, in an attempt to destroy the legacy of our son."
Around the country, pastors asked people to pray for Charleston, and the tragedy resonated far beyond urban areas. Congregants at a small church in rural north-central Pennsylvania signed a condolence card to send to Emanuel. The Rev. Nancy Light Hardy of St. James United Church of Christ said she debated buying the card, which seemed "pitiful and lame" when set against the "inconceivable" killings.
"But at least it lets the Charleston church know that Christians across the country are thinking about them," she said.
The welcoming spirit Roof exploited before the shooting was still alive.
Gail Lincoln said she typically attends another AME church nearby but felt compelled to visit Emanuel this week.
"Through all of this, God is still our refuge," Lincoln said. "I'm still heartbroken but it's going to get better. I know it's going to take time, day by day."
Goff said reopening the doors of Emanuel so soon after the shooting "sends a message to every demon in hell and on Earth."
MiMi has a NEW MAN and he’s a BILLIONAIRE!
American music diva Mariah Carey appears to have struck up an unlikely romance with Australian billionaire James Packer.
The pair announced their very surprise coupling with a romantic hand-in-hand stroll through the picturesque streets of Capri, in the south of Italy on Friday.
Singer Mariah, 45, looked lovingly at the Australian billionaire as they ambled along the cobbled roads, amid reports they are on an 'extended holiday.'
The mother of four-year-old twins is said to have met Packer through American filmmaker Brett Ratner, who was once himself rumoured to be romantically involved with the beauty.
The well-connected producer is known for directing the Rush Hour film series, The Family Man, Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and Prison Break.
A regular visitor to the island of Capri, Mariah was spotted perusing the cobbled streets on Friday by a number of locals, with one restaurant owner telling Daily Mail Australia that he saw the songstress enter a lingerie shop.
An employee at a small cafe meanwhile, saw her stop and take time to greet some of her more ardent admirers.
'She signed a few autographs for fans. There were three or four children around her,' they said.
Prior to jetting across to Italy, Mariah had been Las Vegas for the beginning of her residency at Caesars Palace and likely spent time with Packer who was also in town for the much-anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
Sources have told showbiz website TMZ that Sydney-born Packer has been 'aggressively' pursuing Mariah for months.
The Dream Lover hitmaker has been friends for years with the entertainment mogul and has been spending time on board his 88-metre luxury yacht. Charming Packer, said to be worth an estimated $4.6 billion, according to Forbes, was married for six years to model Erica Baxter, with whom he has three young children; Indigo, six, Jackson, five, and Emmanuelle, two.

Bobby tells ET
"Unless you hear it directly from me or through my attorney, do not believe any words attributed to me. I am making decisions with Pat Houston and we are working together for the medical care of my daughter. I do not have time for the frequent side shows that others choose to engage in almost on a daily basis."
"Right now we are focused on Bobbi Kristina’s medical prognosis and the criminal investigation. These are the priorities for us. Whoever had a hand in causing my daughter's injuries needs to be brought to justice."

Laverne Cox: Men Dating Trans Women Are Probably 'Stigmatized More Than Trans Women'
Actress Laverne Cox has been a forceful advocate for transgender women. She wants the world to know, however, that “gender policing” hurts everyone, and, in particular, men who date transgender women feel its effects in an intensely harsh way. And, she says, these men need someone high-profile among them to come out of this specific kind of closet.
“Most men who are attracted to and date transgender women are probably stigmatized more than trans women are,” she observed in an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress. “I think a man who is dating trans women, who is a celebrity, or famous or is an athlete or something, needs to come forward –- or a musician –- and needs to say, ‘I love transgender women and [they] deserve to be loved and I’m going to declare that publicly.’ I think those men need some sort of inspiration and hope, so they can live more authentically.”
With the third season of "Orange is the New Black" recently released on Netflix, Cox, who plays transgender prison inmate Sophia Burset, is juggling interview requests and appearing on magazine covers –- including Entertainment Weekly, dressed as Lady Liberty herself -– and talking about not only her role in the groundbreaking series but also how she’s managing fame and using her platform to advocate for transgender people – and for all of us, living in a society in which rigid gender norms are enforced.
“Gender is policed in such a way that it does not just affect transgender people,” she said. “It affects gay-identified men, straight-identified men. And straight-identified men [who are] deeply policed. As I date a lot of straight-identified men, I’ve seen them so deeply internalize these ideas very rigidly about what it means to be a man -– to be a straight man. “
Speaking about her character on 'OINTB,' Cox, while not wanting to give too much away, became emotional.
“Episode 12 is when it really goes down for Sophia,” she explained. “What she experiences in that episode is unfortunately the reality for far too many transgender people, whether they’re incarcerated or not, but particularly for trans women who are incarcerated. And when I read that script, I bawled. I cried a lot. I was like, ‘Are they really doing this? Are they really doing this?’ But this is the truth. It was deeply triggering for me because of who I am. And I just immediately knew it was bigger than me and I had to honor this story and these circumstances. And I hope I did. It was hard to play. It was hard to read it, let alone play it and experience it.”
Reflecting on the intensity of her career right now and the enormous attention she's receiving, Cox still sometimes can’t fathom it all, but she's happy her experience allows her to connect with the public on an important issue that affects people’s lives.
