After 25 years, you'd be forgiven for thinking — despairing, really — that the formula for a perfect Scary Movie has been forgotten. But the family that started it all remembers everything.
"If you look at everything we've done — I don't care if it's White Chicks, I don't care if it's Little Man — all our movies are set pieces and jokes. It's joke, joke, joke, joke, joke. If we have a movie that's an hour and a half, we really want 88 minutes of jokes and two minutes of heart," Marlon Wayans tells Entertainment Weekly on a recent May afternoon.
Shawn Wayans, his Scary Movie co-creator and the co-writer and costar of its long-awaited sixth entry (in theaters June 5), is quick to keep his brother humble.
"That's 30 seconds of heart and about five minutes of fart," he corrects.
There weren't any farts (at least that we know of), but there certainly were a few hours of laughs, and lots of love between the brothers, Regina Hall, and Anna Faris — the original core four of the beloved horror parody series — on the set of their EW cover shoot in early May. The foursome piled into a shower in Brooklyn's Samson Stages to parody Psycho… but with a high-brow twist. It's like no time's passed at all, even as their new installment — simply dubbed Scary Movie — hits theaters almost exactly 25 years after they all last shared the screen together in Scary Movie 2.
"Getting everybody back was The Avengers, bro," Marlon says, with Shawn on his heels again: "The Avengers with no money!"
Marlon has a quick retort this time, referring to the reunited Scary Movie family as "The Pretenders."
It was a long, rocky road back to Scary Movie, which was Faris' first audition, Hall's first big hit, and the Wayans' first blockbuster as writers. Made on a sub-$20 million budget, the flagship comedy grossed $278 million worldwide.
"They chased us at the premiere. They said, 'We want another movie next summer, the same date.’ And we didn't have a script," Marlon recalls.
Scary Movie 2 was nevertheless delivered on time, and again grossed many times its budget in 2001. But that didn't matter to Dimension Films, the franchise's distributor, which was then a label of Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Miramax Films.
The franchise was "taken from us," Marlon says. But Faris and Hall, whose hapless BFFs Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks had by then become its A-list faces, continued with Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 alone.
Marlon described the Weinsteins as "an evil regime" in a 2020 lookback on the first Scary Movie, saying the pair of producing moguls "do what they want to do, how they do it — and it can be rude and quite disrespectful." The Weinsteins lowballed the Wayans with an offer to return for Scary Movie 3, Marlon claimed, and they couldn't agree on a new deal. His response: "If you don't want to pay for the jokes, have somebody else do it."
That's exactly what they did, publicly firing Shawn and Marlon with a New Year's Eve press release announcing that Scary Movie 3 was moving on without them.

The temporary restraining order expires on June 23 at the end of his hearing for a longer-term or permanent domestic violence restraining order, according to court documents
The alleged former boyfriend of Bad Boys star Theresa Randle has filed a restraining order against the actress after claiming that she broke into his home and assaulted him on multiple occasions.
Dario Pallini filed the petition in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, June 2, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
In the petition, Pallini, 60, claimed he and Randle, 61, dated for two years between 2022 and 2024 and alleged that she has repeatedly harassed him since their breakup.
Pallini further stated that he returned home on June 1 and found Randle — best known for her roles in Bad Boys, Bad Boys II and Malcolm X — inside his apartment after she had broken in.
He claimed she was sitting in a closet with his dog and smoking crack cocaine.
According to the filing, an argument followed, during which Pallini alleged that Randle hit him on the shoulder and threw a can of vegetables that struck him in the head.
He also alleged that during a separate incident on May 18, he awoke to find Randle standing over him in his home. He stated that he could "tell she was high" at the time because "she started to clean my house and telling me that I owe her."
He stated that she then threatened to shoot him before striking him with a metal pole from his medical bed.
Pallini claimed that he called the police during the incident.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed to PEOPLE that officers responded to a domestic violence call at Pallini's apartment complex on June 1 shortly before 5 p.m.. local time. The department was unable to confirm whether a call had been placed on May 18.
"She is addicted to drugs and needs help," Pallini continued in the petition, adding, "she is unpredictable and I am afraid of what she might do.
A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Pallini a temporary restraining order against Randle on June 2, according to court records.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Pallini a temporary restraining order against Randle on June 2
The temporary restraining order expires on June 23 at the end of his hearing for a longer-term or permanent domestic violence restraining order, according to court documents
The alleged former boyfriend of Bad Boys star Theresa Randle has filed a restraining order against the actress after claiming that she broke into his home and assaulted him on multiple occasions.
Dario Pallini filed the petition in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, June 2, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
In the petition, Pallini, 60, claimed he and Randle, 61, dated for two years between 2022 and 2024 and alleged that she has repeatedly harassed him since their breakup.
Pallini further stated that he returned home on June 1 and found Randle — best known for her roles in Bad Boys, Bad Boys II and Malcolm X — inside his apartment after she had broken in.
He claimed she was sitting in a closet with his dog and smoking crack cocaine.
According to the filing, an argument followed, during which Pallini alleged that Randle hit him on the shoulder and threw a can of vegetables that struck him in the head.
He also alleged that during a separate incident on May 18, he awoke to find Randle standing over him in his home. He stated that he could "tell she was high" at the time because "she started to clean my house and telling me that I owe her."
He stated that she then threatened to shoot him before striking him with a metal pole from his medical bed.
Pallini claimed that he called the police during the incident.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed to PEOPLE that officers responded to a domestic violence call at Pallini's apartment complex on June 1 shortly before 5 p.m.. local time. The department was unable to confirm whether a call had been placed on May 18.
"She is addicted to drugs and needs help," Pallini continued in the petition, adding, "she is unpredictable and I am afraid of what she might do.

Megan Thee Stallion is pushing back against a lawsuit that accuses her of failing to pay more than $1.2 million in wardrobe and styling expenses.
According to legal documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and spotted by People, celebrity stylist Eric Archibald and styling firm Six K are seeking $1,243,501.98 in alleged unpaid fees tied to services performed for the Grammy-winning rapper between January 2024 and August 2025.
The lawsuit reportedly claims Archibald was hired to provide styling services for numerous appearances and events during that period. The plaintiffs allege they submitted invoices to Megan and several related business entities between January 2025 and January 2026 and that those invoices were supported by deal memos and email correspondence acknowledging the work.
Among the examples included in the complaint is an invoice related to the inaugural Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in New York City. The filing includes an itemized memo totaling $53,800 that lists styling services, assistants, preparation days, and wardrobe expenses, including multiple gowns worn for the event.
Archibald and Six K claim they have spent nearly two years attempting to resolve the matter privately. They argue that the outstanding balance has negatively affected both their businesses and professional relationships, with some of the money allegedly owed to third-party vendors.
"Despite the fact that Six K has made numerous and unsuccessful attempts to resolve payment over the course of the last two years, there is still no imminent direction towards settlement between the parties," the complaint states.
Megan, however, strongly disputes the allegations. In a statement provided to PEOPLE, the Houston rapper said an internal review conducted by her financial team uncovered what she described as significant irregularities in the billing records.
"My finance team conducted a comprehensive audit of Eric Archibald's wardrobe expenses and uncovered fraudulent invoices, unsupported charges, and styling shipments tied to addresses that could not be verified," Megan said. "Those findings raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of expenses that we repeatedly tried to resolve privately with Eric's team."
"Rather than address the issues from the audit, Eric and his team chose to file a lawsuit," she continued. "The facts are on our side and I won't be coerced into paying charges that can't be substantiated."
The dispute marks the latest legal challenge involving the "Savage" rapper. In December 2025, Megan secured a victory in her defamation lawsuit against blogger Milagro Gramz, whose legal name is Milagro Elizabeth Cooper. A jury ultimately ruled in Megan's favor after she accused the blogger of spreading false claims about her on behalf of Tory Lanez.

Written and executive produced by The Fosters co-creator Bradley Bredeweg and Matthew Thomas (Joker’s Downfall), Debbie, now in development, is described as an elevated legal drama procedural exploring the cost of reinvention and the fine line between justice and survival. It centers on Debbie Powell (a role earmarked for Union), a once-feared attorney whose spectacular public downfall forces her to rebuild her life and career as a public defender, using the skills, connections, and relentless drive that once made her one of Atlanta’s most formidable lawyers to fight for those the system has left behind, one explosive case at a time.

Musicians Union Sues Warner and Universal Over AI Training Deals
The American Federation of Musicians has filed a federal lawsuit against Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, accusing both labels of licensing members' music to AI music generators without compensating the artists who made them.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Friday (June 5), centers on the labels' settlements and licensing deals with Suno and Udio.
The AFM contends those arrangements triggered the "new uses" provision of its collective bargaining agreement, which requires major labels to pay musicians when their work is put to new commercial applications, according to Billboard.
The AFM complaint spells out the core grievance directly: "Defendants have failed to share in the settlement proceeds and future revenue with those same artists whose music was copied, used for training, and incorporated into the development of the AI models and platforms now being commercially exploited."
The union, represented by attorney Eyad Asad of Cohen Weiss & Simon, is seeking unspecified monetary damages and also demanding that the labels disclose exactly which recordings were fed into the AI training programs.
UMG reached a settlement and partnership with Udio in late October 2025, followed by WMG's own deal with Udio in mid-November 2025. WMG subsequently became the first major label to settle with Suno, also in November 2025.
The AFM argues that those resolutions protected the labels' financial interests while leaving musicians out entirely. "While the defendants protected their own interests and created a significant source of new revenue with the retrospective settlements and prospective licenses, they have refused to compensate the musicians whose work — created with their own instruments and through their talent, creativity, and hard work — is fed into AI machines for profit," the complaint reads.
Both labels pushed back on the suit, with a UMG spokesperson saying the company has been "at the forefront of protecting the rights and advancing the interests of artists and songwriters in the age of AI." They added that the AFM "chose this route during our collective bargaining negotiations" and that UMG intends to resolve outstanding issues through those talks.
WMG called the lawsuit "unproductive" and said it looks forward to resuming scheduled negotiations, framing its Suno deal as part of a broader effort to "architect a healthy AI ecosystem on behalf of artists everywhere."
The filing lands two days after Suno announced a $400 million Series D funding round valuing the company at $5.4 billion, a more than twofold jump from the $2.45 billion valuation it carried seven months earlier.
Suno CEO Mikey Shulman said the capital will help more people express themselves through music, and confirmed a new model built on the WMG partnership is planned for release in the coming months.
"This funding will help us accelerate what matters most: helping more people express themselves through music, while continuing to expand what’s possible for artists and creators on Suno," Shulman said at the time.
Meanwhile, UMG's copyright case against Suno remains active, with UMG and Sony last month adding more than 61,000 additional copyrighted songs to their complaint after discovering them during discovery.

Donald Trump & Zohran Mamdani Both Plan to Attend June 8 Knicks Game, But Won’t Sit Together
Donald Trump is apparently planning to attend a New York Knicks NBA finals game next week.
According to sources at the New York Post, a walk-through was done at Madison Square Garden in anticipation of the 79-year-old POTUS’ decision to watch the game.
It is said he’s going to attend the June 8 game, which will take place at the famed venue. The Knicks won game 1 of the series against the San Antonio Spurs, and will play game 2 on Friday (June 5).
Game 3 – the game Trump is apparently planning to attend – is on Monday (June 8).
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also planning to attend the June 8 game.
The Post clarified that they will not be sitting together.
Trump and Mamdani have met.
The pair had a meeting at the White House, and Mamdani confirmed how he views the President afterwards.
Plans could always change, but as of right now, if you tune in to watch the Knicks vs. Spurs game, you may see Mamdani and Trump.
