Regina King on learning to live with loss, the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, and finding a way forward (via Harper’s Bazaar)
There is a mesmerizing scene in the new movie Shirley that only Regina King could pull off. The film, directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley, tells the story of Shirley Chisholm, who, in 1968, became the first Black woman elected to Congress—and four years later, launched a historic bid for the Democratic Party nomination for president.
Chisholm’s run for that nomination, which made her both the first Black candidate and the first woman to do so, occupies an important, if prescient, place in the history of American politics, coming four decades before Barack Obama would be elected the nation’s first Black president and five decades before Hillary Clinton’s nomination. Chisholm has been canonized as an unrelenting champion of the people—one who galvanized women, communities of color, and younger voters against a predominantly white, male political establishment that had too often and for too long ignored them.
But she was also a shrewd strategist who embodied her campaign slogan, “Unbought and Unbossed” (which was also the title of her 1970 memoir). During her time in Congress, she drafted dozens of pieces of legislation to end the war in Vietnam and help achieve racial, gender, and economic equality.
In addition to the racism and misogyny Chisholm experienced on the campaign trail, she also faced multiple threats to her safety, including an incident where a man with a 10-inch knife tried to stab her in the back. Chisholm was always reluctant to speak publicly about the attack, but Shirley imagines her in its immediate aftermath.
In a bouffant wig, King, as Chisholm, stands alone in a hotel bathroom, her reflection visible in a mirror as she struggles to compose herself. She removes her glasses and wets a washcloth, which she wrings out with her hands before gently bringing it to her face, all while trying to stave off flashbacks of the assault. Afterward, she sits at the edge of a bed, waiting for her husband, who also serves as her bodyguard, to return.
In that single sequence, King strips away the sound bites and symbolism to show us a side of Chisholm we never got to see in real life as she wrestled with the extraordinary demands placed on her—physically, emotionally, psychologically—as a Black woman who was far too often the first
King’s portrayal of Chisholm is the type of powerfully nuanced performance for which she has been routinely celebrated over the past decade, winning four Emmys and an Academy Award during that span. But it’s also a performance that King delivered at a profoundly devastating time in her own life.
A month into filming Shirley in Cincinnati, on January 21, 2022, King revealed the shattering news that her son, Ian Alexander Jr., had passed away in Los Angeles. Ian, a DJ and musician who performed under the name Desduné, was King’s only child from her marriage to her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander Sr. (The couple split in 2007.) He died by suicide. He’d just turned 26.
On a Sunday afternoon in mid-January, King and I sit quietly at a restaurant in a hotel in L.A. off Sunset Boulevard. A cream beanie covers her long mini box braids, which fall softly over her white, beige, and pink camo hoodie. She is wearing no makeup, which reveals the beautiful intricacies of her face, smooth and angular, with hazel eyes that light up with curiosity and settle down with care. The weekend we’re speaking marks the second anniversary of Ian’s death; the previous Friday, January 19, would have been his 28th birthday.

Since losing her son, King has, for the most part, remained out of the spotlight. Our meeting is an early step in her reengagement with her more public life as an actor and director, one she has occupied since she landed her first role at the age of 14, in 1985, as brassy adolescent Brenda Jenkins on the sitcom 227. “As I looked at it on my calendar, I was like, ‘Well, when is it going to happen?’ ” King tells me. “But we’re here,” she says, measuring her words slowly, “making it through.”
Ian was born when King was 25, and for years motherhood has been a driving force in many of her career choices. Practically, this has sometimes meant pursuing TV work instead of movies because the schedules are more predictable and don’t require as much travel.
It also led King to take on projects that might resonate with Ian and his identity. In 2019, while promoting Barry Jenkins’s If Beale Street Could Talk, the plot of which hinged on a young Black man who is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, she recalled how Ian told her after a screening of the film that it was the first time he’d ever watched a movie and felt seen. King would win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a fiercely loving and loyal mother in the film
When I spoke with King in early 2021 about her feature directorial debut, One Night in Miami … , a fictionalized account of an actual meeting in 1964 between world heavyweight-champion boxer Muhammad Ali, football star Jim Brown, Civil Rights leader Malcolm X, and soul singer Sam Cooke, she told me that Ian had been a major impetus for her to want to make a film that explored Black male vulnerability through the eyes of four larger-than-life icons.
In almost every interview of King’s that I’ve read or listened to, she has spoken about the tightness of their bond—about how she and Ian, in some ways, grew up together.
“I feel like I am in a place now where my faith has really been challenged,” King says. “I don’t know that I should say this, because I feel like it’s where I used to be, but that idea that what you put into it is what you get back—it’s been proven to me that that’s not necessarily true.”
She pauses and exhales.
“When I look at all of the work and everything that we and Ian put into trying to move through the depression … I mean, he’s pure joy and pure light,” she says, slipping for a moment into the present tense. “But he was struggling so much. We knew. We knew what we were going through, but he never presented that way. That’s why I know that a smile doesn’t always mean happy. He would never not let whoever he was with feel like they were the most special person in the world. So for me, I’m like, ‘Man, he was putting a lot into things, a lot into people, a lot into this world, and yet it wasn’t translating back,’ ” she says.
“If I was told, ‘Do you want to do this again, but it’s going to be exactly the same?’ I would say yeah, just because of how much Ian gives me,” King continues. “But right now, it is me trying to better understand this new relationship with Ian that the universe has chosen. We always talk about spirit: They’re always with us in spirit. But his physical absence is so loud that it’s hard to sometimes tap into that spiritual connection.”
King is candid about the fact that she’s still processing Ian’s death—and that that itself might be a process that doesn’t have an end. “One of the things I’ve learned on this journey is that gratitude and sadness are not mutually exclusive; they’re always working at the same time,” King says. “I just have to navigate this. Sometimes it’s minute by minute. I’m aware when I talk to other mothers—and I hate that we share this because I feel like I don’t want anyone to share this, but because we do share it, they have just taught me so much. Having those women in my life reminding me of the importance of not isolating—because it’s really easy to isolate, especially when the majority of people in the world have no idea whatsoever of this level of grief. But talking to women who are like, ‘It’s not going to go away.’ At least I know that. … One thing that I feel like every mother that I talk to feels like is that no one could have prepared me for this. No one told me this part. There’s something about them, 11 years, 12 years later—the grief is still there. So at least I know. I do know that. And I think even without them telling me that, I feel that inside. I think they just confirmed that for me. I read somewhere that grief is love with no place to go, and I was like, ‘Huh … yeah … that does sum it up in some way.’ ”

King doesn’t remember everything that happened when they all reconvened a few months after Ian’s death to finish shooting Shirley. That period, she says, is like a blur. But she does remember some moments vividly. She knew she had to finish the movie and is grateful to Ridley, the crew, the cast, which included Terrence Howard, André Holland, Christina Jackson, Lucas Hedges, and the late Lance Reddick, and her younger sister, Reina King, who served as a coproducer on the film, for the way they lifted her up and made it their mission to complete the movie too.
“I know Ian would have felt like if I didn’t finish something because of a choice that he needed to make, then I wasn’t honoring him,” King says. “We all landed at the finish line on Ian’s wings. He guided us there.”
I like to think that King’s perseverance comes as much from being a child actor as it does from being a teen athlete. To anyone who has seen her kickbox in 2005’s Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous or battle Zazie Beetz in the 2021 western The Harder They Fall, her kinesthetic intelligence and physicality are much more than apparent.
King, who was born and raised in L.A., enrolled in her first acting class as a child with Betty Bridges, an actor and the mother of Diff’rent Strokesstar Todd Bridges. She also ran track in high school, an extracurricular activity she maintained even after she started acting professionally. As a former high school sprinter myself, I can’t help but suspect that those dual experiences may have instilled in her an endurance and an uncanny ability to throw herself fully into every stride while rigorously pacing herself for the road ahead and whatever comes next.
It was the late director John Singleton who cast King in her first movie, as a cheeky around-the-way girl in 1991’s Boyz n the Hood,and later as Janet Jackson’s saucy sidekick, Iesha, in 1993’s Poetic Justice. But fearing she’d be typecast, King pursued roles that allowed her to stretch and subvert expectations. She auditioned for—and got—the part of Marcee Tidwell, the ride-or-die wife of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s football star Rod Tidwell, in Cameron Crowe’s 1996 film, Jerry Maguire,and went on to appear in How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998), Enemy of the State(1998), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), and Ray (2004). King then returned to TV, embarking on a tour-de-force run of peak-era work on shows like 24, Southland, The Leftovers, American Crime, Seven Seconds,and Watchmen.

#RHOA: What Has Apollo Nida Been Up To Since RHOA?
Bravo fans fell in love with Phaedra Parks on the Real Housewives of Atlanta thanks to her Southern drawl and quick, witty one-liners. So it was a bit of a surprise when she announced that she was marrying an ex-con named Apollo Nida. Phaedra had everything going for her: a successful law practice, peach holder, and well-respected within the Atlanta community. But after she became cagey with her due date, fans everywhere knew something was up with the couple and their shady ways.
What Is Apollo Up To?
Since leaving prison life behind in 2019, Apollo is once again trying to pretend he has his ducks in a row. Almost immediately, he was behind the camera directing his fiance’s wig campaign, but nothing came of it. Apollo is shooting for the stars as his Instagram bio read that he is also a “Reality Production, Fitness Mogul, Public Speaker, Celebrity Ambassador, Philanthropist, and Brand Endorser.” Yet I only see him doing construction.
Phaedra and Apollo’s Demise
Apollo is no longer carrying the weight of the sun across the sky each day and instead is trying to turn away from a life of crime. No matter how you word it, Apollo was always a hustler who wanted to figure out how to give himself a life most only dream of. But as Pheadra and the rest of the Real Housewives of Atlanta cast learned, Apollo wasn’t everything he said he was and ended up serving an eight-year federal sentence after a fraud conviction. At the time, federal prosecutors alleged that Apollo had stolen millions of dollars from at least 50 people over four years.
Prosecutors presented evidence that the father of two had created fake collection companies to gather personal information, which was used to steal victims’ identities. What is with Bravo stars trying to get away with fraud? This was not Apollo’s first stint behind bars; before meeting Phaedra, he spent five years in federal prison for auto title fraud.
How Are Apollo and Phaedra Now?
Apollo and Phaedra did not end on good terms, with Bravo fans remembering that their last scene filmed for the Real Housewives of Atlanta showed the two having an unconfirmable fight in their garage. However, the duo has come a long way, and according to the Married to Medicine star, they “co-parent very well.” While on Watch What Happens Live, the mother of two shared that after Apollo was released from prison in 2019, he tried to bond with their sons, Ayden and Dylan. Phaedra joked about Apollo’s connections to Sheree Whitfield, telling viewers, “Honey, if it makes him some money, he can buy these children some shoes and some Chick-fil-A. Hang out with whoever you need to hang out with to get a check. Bring it to Mama!”
Reunion Rumble
But Married to Medicine fans were pleasantly surprised to learn that Apollo will be taking a seat behind his ex-wife on the second part of the reunion. This marked the first time they have filmed together since the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Apollo even spent the recent holidays with his former family. Even though he was not invited to Ayden’s 13th birthday, which was filmed for the show, it seems he is trying to get back in Phaedra and his son’s good graces after so many years of being an absent father.
I can’t help but think that production is messy boots for inviting Apollo to the reunion, but I’m here for this. Make her work a bit; she hasn’t given us anything the whole season. However, I think his appearance will be positive because I don’t believe for a second that fancy Phaedra would have allowed him to be on the show if they weren’t at least amicable. I hope Bravo didn’t bring Apollo back to intimidate his ex-wife because we already watched that once, and I’m not here for that narrative again.
I can only imagine he is here because the women made such a big deal about Apollo not being at his son’s birthday. So there is only one thing to say: welcome back, Apollo.

I can’t help but think that production is messy boots for inviting Apollo to the reunion, but I’m here for this. Make her work a bit; she hasn’t given us anything the whole season. However, I think his appearance will be positive because I don’t believe for a second that fancy Phaedra would have allowed him to be on the show if they weren’t at least amicable. I hope Bravo didn’t bring Apollo back to intimidate his ex-wife because we already watched that once, and I’m not here for that narrative again.
I can only imagine he is here because the women made such a big deal about Apollo not being at his son’s birthday. So there is only one thing to say: welcome back, Apollo.

Kobe Bryant gave his father, Joe, his very first championship ring as a gift in 2000. He won it when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers, making it his first of five NBA championships throughout his storied career. He gave his mother, Pamela, a replica, but now the original ring—that is made of 14 karat gold and has a total of 40 diamonds—is being auctioned off.
This is the second time Kobe’s parents have attempted to sell some of his prized possessions — and fans are pissed.
One called them “disgraceful” while another noted, “Kobe would of never sold it. Wow sad.” Others felt the ring should “stay in the family” or that the late athlete’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, should buy it and “keep it safe.”
Prior to his death, Kobe and his parents reportedly attempted to make amends after several fallouts that began when he started dating Vanessa. Joe and Pamela didn’t attend the couple’s wedding in April 2001. Over the years, their brief reconciliations were documented, but that came to a halt in 2013.
“When u give Give GIVE and they take Take TAKE at wat point do u draw a line in the sand?” Kobe tweeted, according to the Los Angeles Times, with the hashtags “hurt beyond measure,” “gave me no warning,” and finally, “love?”
The tweet was in response to his parents attempting to sell several beloved pieces of memorabilia from Kobe’s career, including the aforementioned championship ring and his high school jerseys. This prompted a lawsuit, the New York Post reported, because Kobe reportedly wasn’t notified about the auction and didn’t give his permission to sell any of the items in question.
“We regret our actions and statements related to the Kobe Bryant auction memorabilia,” said Joe and Pamela in a statement at the time, per ESPN. “We apologize for any misunderstanding and unintended pain we have caused our son and appreciate the financial support he has provided over the years.”
This did put a further strain on Kobe’s relationship with his parents, as they did not attend his final NBA game back in April 2016.
“Our relationship is sh*t,” he explained to ESPN. “I say, ‘I’m going to buy you a very nice home,’ and the response is, ‘That’s not good enough?’ Then you’re selling my s**t?”
Neither Vanessa nor Joe or Pamela have publicly spoken about this current auction, which will be live until March 30, via Goldin.

'RuPaul’s Drag Race' Star Shangela Accused Of Sexual Assault By 5 Alleged Victims
In a statement, Pierce's lawyer Andrew Brettler denied all allegations of sexual assault, calling them "false and unsupported by any evidence or reliable witness testimony."
One alleged victim, Helmer, claimed Pierce sexually assaulted him in Los Angeles in 2015 while intoxicated. Pierce's lawyer countered that the sex was consensual and that Helmer continued to contact Pierce afterward.
Another alleged victim, Edward Ramirez, stated that Pierce sexually assaulted him in Texas in 2018 after a night out. Ramirez reportedly declined to report the incident to police due to a distrust of authorities.
A third accuser, Checri, claimed that Pierce attempted anal penetration without his consent in London in 2017 while intoxicated. Pierce's lawyer asserted that Checri pursued a physical relationship and that they made out consensually.
A fourth accuser, Zachary, alleged that Pierce and another man attempted to penetrate him forcibly in New Orleans in 2015 while intoxicated. Pierce's lawyer stated that the sexual acts were consensual and that Zachary continued texting Pierce afterward.
A fifth alleged victim, RoyLee Soliz, claimed that Pierce attempted to put his penis in his mouth while intoxicated in Texas in 2012. Pierce's lawyer denied this accusation, stating that Pierce has no recollection of meeting Soliz.
The allegations mirror those made by McGarrigle in his lawsuit, which was later dismissed. Pierce has denied all allegations, calling them "personally offensive" and harmful to the LGBTQ+ community. He has previously stated that an external investigation found no proof of McGarrigle's claims.
Alicia Keys Makes $60K Donation To New York Performing Arts School
Alicia Keys, the 43-year-old Grammy winner, has donated $60,000 to a GoFundMe campaign organized by 7th grade student Tennyson Artigliere to save the theater program at her alma mater, Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) in New York City.
Along with her label, Roc Nation, Keys' contribution helped surpass the $102,000 goal required to maintain the school's partnership with theater company Waterwell. Fellow PPAS alum, Jeremy Allen White, also urged his followers to donate.
Keys, who enrolled at PPAS at age 12, has promised to continue fundraising until the city can provide funding. "When I told my class, people couldn't believe it," said Artigliere. "We brainstormed about what we could do. We wouldn't let the program that brought so many students happiness be cut short.
The school's PTA and parent body will vote on the allocation of the funds in the coming weeks. While the funds raised will continue the Waterwell partnership, other arts partners are being considered.
For Keys, this cause is personal. She was signed to her first label shortly after graduating from PPAS and has since won 16 Grammy Awards, including Best Immersive Audio Album for the re-release of her 2003 album, "The Diary of Alicia Keys".
Other notable PPAS alumni include Britney Spears, Claire Danes, Jesse Eisenberg, Lana Candor, Sarah Hyland, and Josh Peck.

Bruno Mars isn’t in the red with MGM, that is, according to the hospitality and casino giant.
In a statement given to the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Monday, MGM Resorts shut down rumors the “24K Magic” singer had racked up a $50 million gambling debt, and that he was paying his balance via multiple business deals with MGM and its Las Vegas properties.
The company said claims that it has Mars on the hook for millions were “completely false,” writing, “We’re proud of our relationship with Bruno Mars, one of the world’s most thrilling and dynamic performers.”
Celebrating his residency at the Park MGM and partnership on the Bellagio’s new Pinky Ring cocktail lounge, MGM’s statement read, “Bruno’s brand of entertainment attracts visitors from around the globe. MGM and Bruno’s partnership is longstanding and rooted in mutual respect.”
“Any speculation otherwise is completely false,” it went on. “He has no debt with MGM. Together, we are excited to continue creating unforgettable experiences for our guests.”
NewsNation was the first to report the claims, citing an insider who said MGM “basically own” Mars.
“He makes $90 million a year off of the deal he did with the casino, but then he has to pay back his debt,” the source claimed, adding the singer takes home around $1.5 million a show, after taxes.
Mars has mentioned his fondness for the card table more than once over the years.
In a 2013 interview with GQ, he talked about nervously losing $100 on his first bet when he was just 19.

Months after coming to Keith Lee’s defense following the Atlanta stop of his food tour, Cardi B has linked up with the beloved TikTok critic to review his favorite restaurant in Los Angeles.
Lee was in L.A. for the 2024 NAACP Image Awards, where he was nominated for Outstanding Social Media Personality Of The Year. While in the City of Angels, he revisited the only restaurant that’s ever gotten two 10 out of 10 ratings from him—Easy Street Burgers.
“Alright guys, so you know how I feel about L.A. food; it’s not my favorite, but I got a good recommendation about this place […] You know what? Since this person recommended this place, if I don’t like it, I want to tell them to their face,” Bardi joked before Lee walked into frame.
“God is amazing; Let’s do it,” he interjected. Together, they ranked the restaurant’s Jalapeño Monster Burger and Bacon Monster Burger after she declared herself to be a “real burger expert” and boasted that she just had the “best burgers that [she] ever tasted in [her] life” while recently vacationing in Colombia.
First, the “Up” rapper praised the presentation and felt that it was a “fancier Shake Shack.” Most of all, Cardi felt the Jalapeño burger reminded her of a chopped cheese—a New York City staple. They both gave that burger a nine out of 10 rating. She noted that it tastes “100 percent healthier” than a Shake Shack burger.
“They made it with love,” she joked. The Bronx native was not that big of a fan of the Bacon Monster burger and ranked it a seven out of 10. She felt the bacon was overload, but Lee quipped, “See, everybody taste buds are different.” For him, it still remains top-tier. For her, she preferred the first option because “jalapeño on a burger is a treat.”
Fans reveled in the fact that “we made the right person famous” as they ogled in the comments.
Prior to this link-up, Cardi co-signed Lee’s comments on restaurants in Atlanta after he caught flack over his controversial opinion. Bill Hader is been cast in a Dr. Seuss movie! The 45-year-old Emmy-winning actor will be voicing the titular character in Warner Bros. upcoming animated adaption of The Cat in the Hat, which will be directed and written by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, Deadline reports.
Fellow stars voicing characters in the new movie include Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, and Paula Pell.
As of right now, The Cat in the Hat is scheduled to hit theaters on March 6, 2026 and will follow The Cat as he cheers on a pair of siblings struggling with their move to a new town.

Richard Simmons apologizes for ‘confusion’ after social media posts spark concern
Richard Simmons has apologized after posts he made on social media caused concern and speculation about his health.
It all began when Simmons, who is 75, posted an ominous message to X and Facebook on Monday: “I have some news to tell you. Please don’t be sad. I am …. dying. The truth is we all are dying. Every day we live we are getting closer to our death.”
He added: “Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to enjoy your life to the fullest every single day. Get up in the morning and look at the sky… count your blessings and enjoy.”
In a later post Monday, Simmons said he was “sorry for the confusion.”
“Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me,” the fitness celebrity wrote on a post on X. “I am not dying.”
In fact, Simmons said, his message was meant to be one about “how we should embrace every day that we have.”
When reached by CNN prior to Simmons’ apology, Tom Estey, a spokesman for Simmons, also asserted that the posts were meant to be motivational in nature and not a personal announcement related to his health.
“I can confirm with one hundred percent certainty that Richard is not dying,” Estey told CNN. “He’s, in fact, very healthy and happy. The sole purpose of the post was meant to be inspirational.”
In the thread of posts on his X page stemming from his original post, Simmons writes about healthy eating and encouraged his followers to check out his workout videos available on his YouTube channel
“A big hug really goes a long way,” he wrote at the end of his post.
Simmons grew a fitness business and became a television regular in the 1980s, with a reputation as a gregarious health advocate.
He has remained out of the public eye in recent years, but the circumstances surrounding his whereabouts and wellbeing has provided a fair share of internet fodder.

According to RadarOnline, Wyatt stated that his project aims to present Cosby’s perspective on his legal troubles and allegations of sexual assault.
An insider told the National Enquirer that Cosby considers the book “his final opportunity to set the record straight and share his perspective on the events that have led to his downfall.”
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that insiders claim Cosby is scared to leave his home because he “fears for his life.”
A source previously told RadarOnline that Cosby is “scared to leave the house” because he believes someone will try to kill him “for fame.”

Record producer and designer Williams, who was named men’s creative director of the French luxury fashion house last February, has seemingly drawn inspiration from the classic paper sandwich bag for one of his latest designs, reimagining it as a high-fashion accessory.
Instead of paper, the large clutch bag — seen tucked under the arms of models on the runway during Williams’ debut collection on the Pont Neuf in Paris last June — is made of cowhide leather “in the same color as the house’s famed (paper) shopping bags,” the label said.
The comparisons don’t end there. Precisely folded to resemble its more quotidian counterpart, the accessory also features the iconic Louis Vuitton lettering as well as a blue fastening, evoking the grosgrain handles of the house’s bags, to keep sandwiches — or more likely, something more precious — secure.

The paint can bag was designed by Louis Vuitton’s late creative director Virgil Abloh who, in a 2021 interview with design magazine “Icon,” cited the artist Marcel Duchamp — renowned for transforming everyday objects into art — as one of his heroes.
Other fashion houses have employed this approach too: In 2014, designer Ashish Gupta revamped the plastic grocery bag into a sequined statement piece at a premium price, saying that it paid “homage to everyday life.”
“It’s also perhaps a revolt against the disposable nature of fast fashion,” Gupta added in a 2017 email to CNN. “It’s taking a classic but throw-away object and turning it into something with longevity, that can be appreciated outside of its usual context for its timeless design quality.”
But such designs can court controversy — and ridicule. In 2017, Balenciaga released a $2,145 bag that looked just like Ikea’s iconic 99-cent crinkly, blue “Frakta” bag, and promptly went viral on social media.
