Jennifer Lopez Covers WSJ. Magazine’s Innovators Issue!

Jennifer Lopez covers WSJ. Magazine’s November Innovator’s Issue,on newsstands now.

After an acclaimed role in Hustlers and a show-stopping performance at this year’s Super Bowl, the star is back with new music and a new movie—and a plan to build her brand into an empire.

At 51, Lopez has built one of the sturdiest careers in show business as one of Hollywood’s most bank- able stars (global box office receipts estimated at $4.3 billion) and one of the most successful pop singers on the planet (roughly 70 million records sold worldwide). Although the new music (the first two videos with Maluma, sung mostly in Spanish, dropped in late September) and new movie are what her fans will be buzzing about in the coming months, there is other big news in J. Lo’s world—and the reason she’s got talking points in hand: a new beauty line launching any day now (details of which are being kept under wraps); a pending IPO for a startup in which she’s a key investor; and perhaps most tantalizing, persistent rumors that she and A-Rod, to whom she is A-ffianced, have been in a bidding war to become the next owners of the New York Mets.

Lopez has never been afraid to show off her boss moves—and has always evinced the aura of la jefa, a woman who thinks strategically, especially when it comes to her career—but get her talking about how she’s juggling the intersecting parts of her portfolio and she goes full C to the E-O. “There’s the entertainment silo,” she says. “There’s the investment silo. There’s the building businesses silo. And in the entertainment silo, there’s a producing silo, an acting silo, a performing silo and the music silo. And everything needs to be managed and looked after properly, right?”

Lopez on owning her power as a woman: “There is something in me that wants to endure,” says Lopez. “I feel youthful and I feel powerful and I want to show women how to be powerful. There was a lot of symbolism in the performance at the Super Bowl. I wanted to be at the top of the Empire State Building, like King Kong, beating my chest: ‘I’m here!’ You know? It’s a very powerful thing to use your femininity and your sensuality. We are here and we matter. We deserve to be equal. You have to count us.”

Lopez on the industry and public’s reaction to Hustlers: Award nominations rained down on Lopez (though not the expected Oscar, a big letdown, she admits). “I was really taken aback by the reaction,” she says. “Not that I didn’t think it was good. I was proud of my performance. But that hadn’t happened to me since Selena. It’d been more than 20 years since I’d gotten those kinds of accolades.”

#MusicNews: The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj Slam Grammys After 2021 Nominations Announced!

Not holding back! The Weeknd called out the Grammys hours after the 2021 nominations were announced on Tuesday, November 24.

“The Grammys remain corrupt,” the “Blinding Lights” singer, 30, tweeted on Tuesday. “You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…”

The Weeknd was shut out completely by the Recording Academy despite his album, After Hours, and its many singles being a staple on the airwaves. During 2020, he had two singles land in the top 10 on the Billboard charts and six songs make it on the Billboard Global 200 list.

The “Save Your Tears” artist, who earned eight 2020 American Music Awards nominations last month and won three trophies on Sunday, November 22, was not alone in his gripes against how the Grammys picks nominees. Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj threw shade at the awards show on social media for their own reasons on Tuesday.

The “Yummy” singer, 26, who was nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album voiced his issues with his album, Changes, being classified as a pop album and not a R&B record.

“Please don’t mistake this as me being ungrateful, these are just my thoughts take em or leave em. Thank you to the people who fought for me to even have any noms,” Bieber prefaced his Instagram message regarding his gripe with the academy.

The Canadian crooner penned a let to the Grammys noting he is “flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry” before breaking down why his album should not be classified as a pop record.

“I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said I set out to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album,” he wrote. “It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album which is very strange to me. I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style all the way down to the hip hop drums that were chosen it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!”

He concluded by saying he “absolutely love[s] Pop music, [but] it just wasn’t what I set out to make this time around. My gratitude for feeling respected for my work remains and I am honored to be nominated either way.”

Minaj, for her part, brought up a past Grammys issue after Bon Iver earned a nod for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for his collaboration with Taylor Swift on “Exile.”

“Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation,” the “Tusa” rapper, 37, tweeted. “They gave it to the white man Bon Iver. #PinkFriday.”

Minaj was up against Bon Iver, which is a folk group founded by Justin Vernon, in 2012 for Best New Artist, which she lost. Bon Iver also took home the trophy for Alternative Music Album that year. The “Anaconda” rapper, however, has yet to win a Grammy.

Barack Obama’s New Memoir ‘A Promised Land’ Sells 1.7 Million Copies In First Week!

“A Promised Land” is a promising smash. Barack Obama’s most recent memoir has sold an eye-popping 1.7 million copies in North America during its first week — a near-record-high tally for a nonfiction book, reported The Associated Press.

Crown Publishing Group announced on Tuesday that it had upped the book’s initial print run by 900,000 copies to 4.3 million.

Sales also include audio and digital books.

In September, Obama touted the upcoming release of “A Promised Land” on Facebook.

“[The memoir is] an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office, the key events and people who shaped it, my take on what I got right and the mistakes I made, and the political, economic and cultural forces that my team and I had to confront then — and that as a nation we are grappling with still,” Obama wrote.

“A Promised Land,” which chronicles approximately the first half of the 44th president’s White House tenure, sold about 890,000 copies on its first day, noted The AP.

The 768-page tome concludes with the Navy Seals mission to kill Osama Bin Laden.

The first of two planned volumes, “A Promised Land” easily outpaced George W. Bush’s “Decision Points,” which registered 775,000 sales during its first week; and Bill Clinton’s “My Life,” which required eight days to hit the 1 million sales mark.

The most recent White House inhabitant to vie with Barack Obama’s prodigious sales tally is none other than his wife, Michelle.

While the former commander-in-chief’s sales numbers are impressive, he’s got nothing on J.K. Rowling.

The children’s author sold in excess of 8 million copies of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” during the first day, noted The AP.

Starbucks Barista Says She Was Fired For Refusing To Wear Pride Shirt!

A New Jersey woman has filed suit against Starbucks, claiming she was wrongfully terminated for refusing to wear an official company Pride T-shirt that she says violated her religious beliefs.

When Betsy Fresse began working as a barista at a Starbucks in Hoboken in 2018, she alleged in court filings, her managers knew of her religious beliefs. She regularly requested Sundays and certain evenings off to attend church gatherings.

A few months later, Fresse transferred to a Starbucks in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.

In June 2019, she and other staffers attended a meeting in the store manager’s office where, she claims, she saw a box of Starbucks Pride T-shirts on the floor by his desk. After the room cleared out, Fresse asked the manager if she would be required to wear the shirt during her shifts. According to Fresse, he said she would not.

But, per her suit, which was filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, she was contacted by Starbucks’ ethics and compliance helpline several weeks later regarding her request to be exempt from wearing the Pride shirt. She explained to the ethics and compliance representative that she did not want to war the Pride shirt "because her religious beliefs prevented her from doing so," the suit states. Then, on Aug. 22, 2019, Fresse was notified she was being terminated because “her comportment was not in compliance with Starbucks’ core values.” According to her notice of separation, when she was handed a Pride shirt — which Starbucks maintains employees were not required to wear — Fresse said she didn’t want to wear it and that her co-workers “need Jesus.”

In her suit, Fresse claimed that “all people need Jesus” and that Christians are called “to express in word and deeds Christ’s love for everyone.”

She maintains she served all her customers with respect and “holds no enmity toward individuals who ascribe to the LGBTQ lifestyle.” She made some co-workers aware of her religious beliefs regarding sexuality, however, “upon specific inquiry," according to the suit.

Being ordered to wear a Pride shirt as a condition of employment, the suit alleges, “would be tantamount to forced speech and inaccurately show her advocacy of a lifestyle in direct contradiction to her religious beliefs.”

According to filings, Fresse believes “that God created man and woman, that marriage is defined in the Bible as between one man and one woman only, and that any sexual activity which takes place outside of this context is contrary to her understanding of Biblical teaching.”

Fresse filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in February and was given the go-ahead to file suit in August. She’s seeking back pay with interest, plus compensation for emotional pain and suffering, and punitive damages.

A Starbucks spokesperson told NBC News that Fresse’s claims are “without merit” and that the company is prepared to present its case in court. “Starbucks does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation,” the spokesperson said in an email. The spokesperson added that, other than Starbucks’ trademark green apron, “no part of our dress code requires partners to wear any approved items that they have not personally selected.”

Federal court strikes down conversion therapy bans in Florida

On its website, Starbucks asserts it is “committed to upholding a culture where inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are valued and respected.”

But, the lawsuit alleges, the company tried to “exclude and silence Mrs. Fresse, whose religious beliefs it deemed undesirable.”

Attorneys for Fresse did not reply to a request for comment.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, sex and national origin.” In September, two workers at Kroger supermarket in Arkansas filed suit, claiming they were fired for refusing to wear a store apron with a rainbow heart emblem on it, shortly after the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The plaintiffs, Brenda Lawson and Trudy Rickerd, maintained the logo was an endorsement of the LGBTQ community, which violated their belief “that homosexuality is a sin,” according to their complaint. After being disciplined for violating the store’s dress code, both Lawson and Rickerd were ultimately terminated.

The EEOC, which is representing both in the suit, claims Kroger engaged in unlawful employment practices, firing them “because of their religious beliefs and in retaliation for requesting a religious accommodation.”

Is Rihanna Is Joining The 'Black Panther 2' Cast?

Sorry, y'all; Rihanna is NOT joining the cast of the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel.

According to E! News, the rumors about her being cast in the next installment of the superhero franchise were just that: rumors.

Speculation about Rihanna appearing in Black Panther 2 began on Monday (November 23), after fans noticed that when you Googled "Black Panther 2 cast," the singer turned business mogul's name appeared alongside cast members Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, and Winston Duke. While an explanation for the error has not been explained, it wouldn't be the first time that the Internet got something wrong.

Production for Black Panther 2 is expected to begin in July 2021 in Atlanta. It was recently revealed that the entire script had to be rewritten following the sudden passing of lead actor Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August after a secret battle with colon cancer.

While Rihanna won't be a part of the cast, many of the film's originals stars including Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye — head of the Dora Milaje, Wakanda's all-female special forces — and Martin Freeman, who plays CIA agent Everett Ross, have confirmed their return for the Black Panther sequel.

The film is tentatively planning a 2022 release.

Drake x Nike To Release New Collab In December!

Who's ready for another Drake x Nike drop? After releasing his Certified Lover Boy collection with the footwear brand last month, the "checks over stripes" rapper has teased another Nike collab slated to drop in December.

On Saturday (November 21), Drake shared an Instagram clip that began by showing the beautiful Lake Ontario. The camera then panned upward to the Toronto skyline that featured an image believed to be Drake’s Nike logo illuminated in the night’s sky. “12.18.2020," he simply captioned the post.

While not much is known about the collab, the "12.18.2020" date has its own private Instagram page, which is followed by Champagne Papi. Not to mention, the logo featured in Saturday's teaser video was previously shown in Drake's "Laugh Now Cry Later" music video, which was shot at Nike's headquarters in Oregon.

Additionally, Complex recently reported that the collection is all apparel, so fans will have to wait a while longer for the Drake x Nike sneaker. The collection will, however, reportedly include puffer jackets, a track jacket, hoodies, fleece pants, track pants, shirts, socks, and a hat with most of the items coming in "black or black and gold colorways," according to the outlet.

Netflix Removes Chappelle’s Show After Dave Chappelle Asked It To!

Comedian Dave Chappelle has succeeded in getting his old sketch comedy program Chappelle’s Show removed from Netflix, after requesting the streaming service do so because the original rights holder, ViacomCBS, began licensing it without his permission.

The news means Netflix subscribers will no longer have access to the show’s three seasons that originally aired on Comedy Central. Netflix first made the show available on November 1st, and it’s no longer discoverable on the platform as of Tuesday afternoon. Netflix declined to comment.

Chappelle’s Show aired on ViacomCBS-owned Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006 and the program has aired in the years since on other cable networks through syndication deals. It has also been available through Comedy Central’s own website and app, but more recently on streaming services including CBS All Access (also a ViacomCBS property), HBO Max, and Netflix. Chappelle has a controversial relationship to the program, having quit it abruptly during production of its third season, and he does not own the rights to it despite it carrying his name.

Netflix, however, also has a lucrative contract with Chappelle for comedy specials and other programming that started back in 2016 and is worth tens of millions of dollars. The Wrap reports that Chappelle’s ongoing relationship with Netflix is why the streaming service decided to honor his request and pull his old show from the platform. The show is still available on CBS All Access and HBO Max as of Tuesday.

Chappelle initially mentioned his frustration with recent licensing deals around Chappelle’s Show in his Saturday Night Live monologue earlier this month. The comedian then posted an 18-minute clip of unreleased standup, titled “Unforgiven,” to his Instagram account earlier today.

In the clip, Chappelle references his request to Netflix, saying, “I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better.” He also called the decision to stream Chappelle’s Show “fencing stolen goods.”

Here’s the segment of the Instagram video starting at roughly the 11-minute mark that pertains to the Netflix request:

People think I made a lot of money from ‘Chappelle’s Show. When I left that show, I never got paid. They didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract. But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal because I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either.

That’s why I like working for Netflix. I like working for Netflix because when all those bad things happened to me, that company didn’t even exist. And when I found out they were streaming ‘Chappelle’s Show,’ I was furious. How could they not know?

So you know what I did? I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better. That’s why I fuck with Netflix. Because they paid me my money, they do what they say they’re going to do, and they went above and beyond what you could expect from a businessman. They did something just because they thought that I might think that they were wrong.

And I do — I think if you are fucking streaming that show you’re fencing stolen goods. They stole that from me. They just took it. And I’m not here trying to tell you guys that I believe Comedy Central gave me a raw deal just because I’m black. I believe they gave me a raw deal because this fucking industry is a monster.

Meghan Markle Reflects on "Unbearable Grief" After Suffering Miscarriage in July!

Meghan Markle is opening up about "unbearable grief" after suffering a miscarriage over the summer.

In a new piece for the New York Times, published Wednesday, Nov. 25, the Duchess of Sussex shared the heartbreaking news publicly for the first time, explaining that this particular July morning "began as ordinarily as any other day."

"Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find that missing sock. Pick up the rogue crayon that rolled under the table. Throw my hair in a ponytail before getting my son from his crib," she wrote of her routine with her and Prince Harry's son, Archie Harrison. "After changing his diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right."

Meghan continued, "I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second."

In her piece, Meghan recalled going to the hospital with her husband by her side, holding his hand. "I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles," she said, "wet from both our tears, Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we'd heal."

She then reflected on the couple's 2019 royal tour in South Africa, during which a journalist asked Meghan, amid all of the pressures in the public eye, "Are you OK?" Reflecting on that honest moment with the reporter, Meghan wrote, "Sitting in a hospital bed, watching my husband's heart break as he tried to hold the shattered pieces of mine, I realized that the only way to begin to heal is to first ask, 'Are you OK?'"

Meghan went on to write that losing a child "means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few."

"In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage," she said. "Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning."

As we approach the holiday season, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and social injustice, Meghan is hoping that we can all still check in on each other, asking, "Are you OK?"

"We are adjusting to a new normal where faces are concealed by masks, but it's forcing us to look into one another's eyes—sometimes filled with warmth, other times with tears. For the first time, in a long time, as human beings, we are really seeing one another," she concluded her piece. "Are we OK? We will be."

Joe Biden Gives His First Interview to NBC News Since Winning Election!

President-elect Joe Biden gave his first interview since he won the election earlier this month, speaking to NBC News’ Lester Holt about the transition of power, COVID-19 and his administration’s first priorities.

Asked about the Trump administration finally clearing the way on Monday for the formal transition to his administration to begin, Biden said, “I must say, the outreach has been sincere. [It] has not been begrudging so far. And I don’t expect it to be.”

In the NBC interview, which aired Tuesday evening, Biden said they’re “already working out” how he’ll get presidential daily briefings and he expects those to begin as soon as Wednesday.

Emily Murphy, head of the General Services Administration, had sparked outrage by declining until this week to find that Biden had won the election. Without her sign-off, the Biden team could not obtain millions of dollars in transition funds and access to current officials.

Trump himself has yet to concede the election, despite his repeated losses in court cases challenging election results in several states and those same states — including Pennsylvania and Michigan — certifying their results showing Biden as the winner.

Biden told NBC that he has personally “not heard anything from President Trump” since the election but that he believes their chiefs of staff have spoken.

Biden is set to inherit a growing coronavirus crisis, with the number of cases ballooning across the country in recent weeks, reaching over 160,000 confirmed cases per day over the past week. More than 259,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus so far.

The president-elect told NBC he expects to meet soon with the coronavirus team at the White House. On the key matter of distributing a COVID-19 vaccine, he said, “I think we’re going to not be so far behind the curve as we thought we might be in the past.”

Biden described the pandemic and the related economic crisis as “causing real mental stress for millions of people,” adding that it’s “within our power to solve it and to grow the economy.”

“The words of a president matter,” he said. “I think it’s a patriotic responsibility to wear a mask, to socially distance.”

Trump has repeatedly downplayed the threat of the virus, even as he and several members of his immediate family have been infected, as well as dozens of people in his administration and campaign circles.

Biden listed as one of his top priorities for his first 100 days sending an immigration bill to the Senate with a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented people living in the U.S. He also said he plans to reverse Trump’s “very damaging” executive orders “making the climate worse.”

As his team has indicated before, Biden told NBC that he does not intend to push his Justice Department to investigate Trump, saying: “I will not do what this president does and use the Justice Department as my vehicle to insist that something happen.”

He’s already spoken with several leaders of other countries, the president-elect said. “America’s back. We’re at the head of the table once again.”

“This is not a third Obama term, because we face a totally different world,” Biden added. “President Trump has changed the landscape. ... We find ourselves in a position where our alliances are being frayed.”

Asked about his developing Cabinet, and whether he planned to appoint former primary rivals Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to top posts, Biden said that “taking someone out of the Senate ... is a really difficult decision.”

“I have a very ambitious, very progressive agenda,” Biden told NBC. “And it’s gonna take really strong leaders in the House and Senate to get it done.”
