Viola Davis for InStyle US - December 2020!

The one and only Viola Davis is gracing the cover of InStyle’s December issue. The acting great and star of upcoming film “Ma Rainey,” shares her thoughts on community, humanity and demanding her worth within the entertainment industry. When Viola Davis talks, you listen.

On demanding her worth: “I want and I expect to get the same filet mignon that white actresses get. Cooked at the exact temperature. You cannot throw me a bone with a really nice little piece of meat still on it and expect that’s good enough for me. I love my collard greens and all of that, and I know we were given the leftovers. I know how to cook that, but I want a filet mignon. The differences in pay and the lack of access to opportunities are huge. I fully expect changes. I’m trying to lift my hopes up. Even if it takes a little bit of vodka. If we don’t move forward together, then we don’t move forward.”

On the unapologetic way clothing and beauty were approached in Ma Rainey: “Everything attracted me to Ma Rainey, especially the idea that I didn’t feel I could play her. But she also really reminds me of the women I grew up with, all my aunties and relatives, the people who were bigger in stature whom I saw as so beautiful. They never questioned their worth. They had the full makeup, the earrings, the Afros, the wide-leg pants. In white American culture, the idea of classic beauty and confidence has always been associated with extreme thinness, but not in my culture. In the African-American culture, we are in command of our bodies. There’s an unapologetic way that we approach clothing.”

On channeling her authenticity: “I will say that I think my greatest source of strength is my authenticity. If I try to channel some other being, I get lost. That’s when my anxiety level goes up. Growing up in Central Falls [R.I.] as the only kinkyhaired chocolate-brown girl, I always was trying to channel the girls who had the Farrah Fawcett look. It had disastrous results. So the only thing I can do is channel my authenticity. That is really a powerful tool because we spend our entire lives trying to get there. If you are projecting that, that’s what people are attracted to.”

On processing it all and controlling what you can: “In terms of Black Lives Matter, I am who I always am. What’s happening is what has always been happening. We just decided to wake up. How have I been able to process it? I have days when I fail miserably. And that’s when I need my two or three glasses of wine. But I’m trying not to lose hope in humanity. The only thing I can control in life is what I put into it. That’s the only thing I can do with Genesis [her 10-year-old daughter]. Teach her that you still have to be kind, you still have to be empathetic. That that’s going to be a part of your legacy. You have no idea whose life you can shift. And at the same time, even someone who doesn’t share your belief system could be a friend. That is the complexity of life.

#RHOA: Why Kandi Burruss Is Reportedly Feeling Betrayed by Kenya Moore!

After Nene Leakes left The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss is now the longest-running cast member. The Bravo star clashed with Leakes during her last season and it all stemmed from her newfound friendship with Kenya Moore. As season 13 of the series films in Atlanta, Burruss is reportedly feeling betrayed by Moore and Phaedra Parks is at the core of the issue.

To understand the feud between Burruss and Parks, we have to go back to season 10 of the Bravo series. During this season, Parks and Porsha Williams formed a tight bond. This season also saw rumors about Burruss come up that could’ve affected her life and businesses completely.

At the season 10 reunion, it was revealed that Parks had made up a story about Burruss trying to get Williams tipsy in alcohol. Burruss would then allegedly make a move on Williams, which essentially was to take advantage of her.

Burruss was deeply affected by the allegations brought upon her planned by Parks. The latter exited RHOA the following season and has not appeared on Bravo ever since.

Another person that Parks famously clashed with during her time on RHOA was Moore. The latter was accused by Parks of flirting with her then-husband Apollo Nida. Moore denied having feelings for Nida but her actions were not seen with good eyes by Parks.

However, ever since then Parks and Moore have seemingly reconciled as it’s been reported they both follow each other on Instagram. As America awaited the results of the presidential election, Parks posted a meme that featured Moore.

“The internet is still unmatched,” Parks posted poking fun at how long it was taking to count the mail-in ballots. Moore then replied, “YAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSS.”

“Unmatched,” Parks replied to Moore’s comment.

Fans took notice of the exchange and were seemingly excited that the two peaches had made amends.

“I love to see the unity,” a fan replied. “We need to see it, we go through issues with our girlfriends as well and to see how you can surpass it, gives us women motivation.”

“We love to see it,” an Instagram user added.

“I’m not mad about it,” another fan said of the ladies’ friendship. “I never thought I’d see the day.”

“Love to see this friendliness,” another Instagram user posted.

If there was one person that had Moore’s back in RHOA Season 12 it was Burruss. The latter tried to remain bi-partisan in Moore’s conflict with the other ladies. Things got so messy that Leakes called out Burruss for taking Moore’s side blindly.

However, after Burruss was made aware of the interaction between Parks and Moore, a close source is saying it’s making the Grammy winner feeling some type of way.

“Kandi is pissed off that Kenya would make up with Phaedra after Phaedra tried to ruin Kandi with the sex dungeon lie,” an insider told AllAboutTheTea. “Kandi is seeing Kenya’s actions as a betrayal because no true friend of Kandi’s would ever speak to Phaedra.”

Rumors of Burruss’ reaction are not confirmed and it remains to be seen if this will play out on the new season of RHOA.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 13 premieres December 6 on Bravo.

#HipHopNews: Jeezy Says Gucci Mane ‘Respectfully Declined’ His Verzuz Battle!

Gucci Mane is simply not interested in a Verzuz battle with Jeezy. The Snowman appeared on The Breakfast Club on Monday morning (November 9) to promote his newly-announced album The Recession 2. When the topic of his upcoming Verzuz battle with T.I. was brought up during the conversation, he explained why it wasn’t his original plan to go up against his former rival.

“I was like, ‘Swizz if I do it, it’s only one person I’ll do it with,'” Jeezy recalled. “And he was like, ‘Who?’ and I was like, ‘Gucci. Reach out to him. Let me know what’s up.’ I did that. I reached out, Swizz hit back and said he respectfully declined. Cool, kept it moving. I was gonna do it for the culture. We could have did it for the culture. I hung up the phone, three minutes later – that’s when I seen my brother video calling me out.”

Over the summer, Jeezy toyed with the idea of sitting down and having a man-to-man conversation with Gucci during a conversation with Tip for his expediTIously podcast.

“I just feel like that gotta be one of them mafia backroom conversations, man,” he said. “It gotta really be a convo. What I’ve learned over the years, man, is this shit big business. You know, people that went to Yale still do business with people that went to Harvard. So it’s just one of them real convos, man. It’s been decades.”

Clearly it’s going to be some time before a conversation like that happens. In the meantime, Jeezy and Tip will go head-to-head for the Verzuz Season 2 opener, which goes down on Thursday (November 19) at 8 p.m. EST.

Pastor John Gray Publicly Apologizes To His Wife Aventer Gray For “Emotional Unfaithfulness”!

Amid cheating rumors, pastor John Gray has publicly spoken out again, admitting to being unfaithful to his wife Aventer Gray.  In addition to honoring his wife with her photo and a heartfelt message, he admitted to his “emotional unfaithfulness” and said that he has “started intense counseling” for both personal and his marriage.

In part he stated, I never knew what consistent discipline, planning, leadership, manhood, or personal holiness in action from a man’s standpoint looked like. Living a shadow life, God was unwilling to let me die assuming I was whole. I failed to uphold the holy standard of God in my marriage. And I’m sorry. Although you are the only woman I’ve ever slept with, emotional unfaithfulness is just as wrong. Sin is sin. People want to minimize one sin over another, when it all can get you sent to hell.

Pastor Gray, who has been accused of cheating on his wife before, expressed that God and his wife deserve better and says,

The pain I caused her is immeasurable. Seeing her name in blogs because of things I did broke my soul. So since I was the cause of public embarrassment, let me be JUST AS LOUD ABOUT PUBLIC HONOR.

Aventer you are a miracle to me. I am sorry for the pain I have caused you. You name should have NEVER come up in any conversation

in any negative way with anyone ever. I must do the work to earn your trust.

In September, the former reality star stood on stage and addressed the rumors and apologized to his wife at that time as well.  In part he said,

“As I’ve said to my wife, I say to her now in the moment, Aventer I am sorry for the pain that I have caused you. And my prayer is that the life I live from this moment will be one worthy of the love that you have extended and that our family receives from.

Watch the entire video HERE

Aventer Gray has yet to speak about the affair of her husband, but John Gray states that he will put in the work and effort that it takes to get back in good standing with his church, his wife and his children.  He concludes,

I’ll be the pastor Relentless can stand behind. I’m in the process and I will stay in it. May the man I am becoming match the vision God showed you. I love you.

What do you think of his public apology?

Actor Bert Belasco Found Dead In Virginia Hotel Room; No Foul Play Suspected, Police Say!

Actor Bert Belasco, known for his roles in the sports series “Pitch” and as the star of BET’s sitcom “Let’s Stay Together,” has died at the age of 38, police confirmed Monday.

The Woodland Hills, California, resident was filming a movie on location in Virginia, but family and friends became concerned when they could not reach Belasco, who was quarantining in a hotel prior to shooting the film, Variety reported.

Hotel staff contacted Henrico police to conduct a welfare check, and Belasco was pronounced dead in his room, the outlet reported.

According to a police statement, a cause of death has not yet been determined, but investigators said they encountered “no signs of foul play” and the circumstances of Belasco’s death “do not appear suspicious.”

Belasco’s father told TMZ that it appeared his son died of an aneurysm, but he was waiting for the results of an autopsy.

As word of Belasco’s death spread, friends and past co-stars took to social media to express their condolences, WTVR reported.

“Heartbroken at the passing of Bert Belasco,” actress Jackee Harry wrote on Twitter. “A talented, kind young man who I had the pleasuring of working with numerous times on #LetsStayTogether.”

Meanwhile, actress Yvette Nicole Brown wrote on Twitter that she was “gutted” by the news of Belasco’s passing.

“Bert was my friend! We had JUST talked last week. He was happy and excited about his new project and all the good that was to come," she wrote.

According to Variety, Belasco earned his theater degree from Southern Illinois University, enjoyed a stint with Chicago’s Second City improv theater and, in 2007, began appearing in TV shows such as “House” and “Justified,” before landing the role of Charles Whitmore opposite Nadine Ellis on “Let’s Stay Together.” The popular show ran for four seasons.

T.I. Clarifies His 'Handle Your Beefs in Your City' Comment, Says It Wasn't Directed at King Von!

T.I. faced criticism Monday for an Instagram post which some suspected was in reference to the recent death of King Von.

"Atlanta is a beautiful progressive city filled with black excellence," T.I. previously wrote. "We uplift each other & win together. Stop coming here to kill each other. That shit is played out."

The post included a caption which read, "Handle YOUR beefs in YOUR city. Thx in advance." King Von, a Chicago native, was shot and killed outside of the Monaco Hookah Lounge in Atlanta. The shooting reportedly occurred after a feud between Von's crew and the entourage of Atlanta-based rapper Quando Rondo spilled outside the nightclub.

T.I. later stated his post was "grossly mistaken" and had nothing to do with King Von.

The post didn't sit well with King Von's sister Kayla, who responded with a few digs at T.I.'s alleged personal life. She's also asking 50 Cent to help her take Tip to task for the remarks.

50 wondered why T.I. said anything in the first place, and urged him to no longer speak ill of the dead.

Ariana Grande Scores Fifth No. 1 Album With 'Positions'!

Ariana Grande just topped the charts again! Grande’s reign just won’t let up: the singer-songwriter just bagged her fifth number-one album. With the release of her sixth studio LP, Positions, the superstar celebrates yet another chart-topping achievement on the Billboard 200.

Billboard confirmed via Nielsen Music/MRC Data on Sunday (November 8), Grande’s latest full-length project pushed 174,000 units in its first week alone.

More impressively, Positions garnered the highest one-week performance for an album since bundles no longer became factored into chart and sales rankings. To be precise, 42,000 units of that total sum were not aided by either merch-album bundles or concert ticket-album bundles.

What’s more, the outlet reports, “Positions’ streaming start of 173.54 million clicks is the second-largest streaming week for a non-R&B/hip-hop or Latin album in 2020.” Streaming numbers for Positions place Grande behind Taylor Swift’s folklore, which holds the crown with 289.85 million streams.

As aforementioned, this is the "Motive" singer's fifth studio album to go No. 1. Her previous number-one albums include Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014), Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019).

The 27-year-old pop star—who dropped the highly-anticipated record on October 30 with little more than a week’s worth of promotion—also made history this year with the album’s lead single, “Positions.” The title track didn’t just debut at No. 1, it set Grande apart from the competition by making her the first artist with five Hot 100 number-one debuts.

Supreme Court Appears Likely To Uphold The Affordable Care Act!

A demonstrator holds a sign in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard arguments Tuesday on the future of the Affordable Care Act.

The Supreme Court, with a newly constituted and far more conservative majority, took another look at Obamacare Tuesday. But at the end of the day, even with three Trump appointees, the Affordable Care Act looked as though it may well survive.

To many, it may have seemed like dΓ©jΓ  vu.Yes, the Supreme Court did uphold Obamacare eight years ago. It ruled that the so-called mandate, requiring people to either have health insurance or pay a penalty, was constitutional because it amounted to a tax. But in 2017, Congress decided it did not need the penalty, and zeroed it out. At the time, not only congressional leaders, but President Trump crowed about "terminating" the mandate.

But on Tuesday, the Trump administration and a group of GOP-dominated states, including Texas, were back in the high court with a new challenge. They contended that because the mandate language is still on the books, and because the mandate was so interwoven with other provisions of the Affordable Care Act, the whole law should be struck down in its entirety.

Defending the law, California Solicitor General Michael Mongan, representing 20 states that support the ACA, set out the stakes.

"What's before the court today is an enormously consequential statute," he said. "It provides health insurance and other life-saving benefits and protections to hundreds of millions of Americans."

Also defending the law was the House of Representatives, and its lawyer Donald Verrilli, who eight years ago successfully defended the mandate as the Obama administration's solicitor general. Chief Justice John Roberts reminded Verrilli of that argument.

"Eight years ago, those defending the mandate emphasized that it was the key to the whole Act" Roberts said. "But now the representation is that, 'Oh no, everything's fine without it.' Why the bait and switch?"

Verrilli replied that in 2010 Congress made "predictive judgments" that the penalty was needed to get people to buy insurance, but in 2017 the Congressional Budget Office concluded that the market would remain the same even if the penalty were zeroed out. "Congress is allowed to learn from empirical evidence ... and adjust its policy choices," said Verrilli. "And that's what happened here."

Justice Amy Coney Barrett wondered aloud why the court should not strike down the mandate since it raises no revenue now, and thus could no longer be justified under Congress' taxing power.

But when the lawyers seeking to have the whole law struck down began to argue, they ran into real push-back, and not just from the court's liberals.

Chief Justice Roberts, addressing Texas Solicitor General Kyle Hawkins, said, "I think it's hard for you to argue that Congress intended the entire Act to fall if the mandate were struck down when the same Congress that lowered the penalty to zero did not even try to repeal the rest of the Act."

And with a jab at congressional Republicans, Roberts added, "I think, frankly, that they wanted the Court to do that. But that's not our job."

Moments later, Roberts was even more explicit, pointing to what is called the court's doctrine of severability. It calls for the court to preserve the rest of a law when it can, even if one provision or another is struck down. Roberts explained that, "here, Congress left the rest of the law intact when it lowered the penalty to zero. That seems to be compelling evidence on the question."

Justice Brett Kavanaugh echoed the chief justice's sentiments, saying, "It does seem fairly clear that the proper remedy would be to sever the mandate provision and leave the rest of the Act in place, the provisions regarding preexisting conditions and the rest."

Justice Clarence Thomas chimed in with this question for the Texas solicitor general: "The individual mandate now has no enforcement mechanism, so it's really hard to determine exactly what the threat is ... of action against you."

Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that the argument for striking down the whole law, without proof of substantial harm to anyone, including Texas and other conservative states, did not make much sense. "At some point, common sense seems to me would say, 'Huh?'"

And when the Trump administration's Jeffrey Wall, the acting solicitor general, weighed in, arguing for the whole law to be struck down, he took incoming flak even from Justice Samuel Alito.

"At the time of the first case, there was a strong reason to believe that the individual mandate was like a part in an airplane that was essential to keep the plane flying," said Alito. "But now the part has been taken out, and the plane has not crashed. So, if we were to decide this case the way you advocate, how would we explain why the individual mandate in its present form is essential to the operation of the Act?"

A decision is expected in the case later in the term.

Eva Longoria Faces Backlash Over “Latinas Were the Real Heroines” Of Biden Victory Comments!

Whatever happened to the days when celebrities had PR? Actress Eva Longoria is now facing backlash after trying to diminish the role that Black women voters have played in getting Joe Biden elected.

Longoria has upset a lot of people with her remarks in which she claimed that Latinas were the “real heroines” of the Democrats’ election victory, while seemingly downplaying the voter turnout among Black women.

During an MSNBC appearance, Longoria said: “The women of color showed up in a big way. Of course, you saw in Georgia what Black women have done, but Latina women were the real heroines here. Beating men in turnout in every state and voting for Biden/Harris at an average rate close to three to one.”

Following her remarks, Longoria issued an apology after her social media was rebuked by hundreds of people who accused her of “anti-Blackness.”

She tweeted, “I’m so sorry and sad to hear that my comments on MSNBC could be perceived as taking credit from Black women.” She wrote, “When I said that Latinas were heroines in this election, I simply meant that they turned out in greater numbers and voted more progressively than LATINO MEN.”

She added: “My wording was not clear, and I deeply regret that there is such a history in our community of anti-Blackness, and I would never want to contribute to that.”

The actress, who also co-presented this year’s Democratic National Convention, also tweeted: “Black women have long been the backbone of the Democratic Party, something we have seen played out in this election as well as previous ones. Black women absolutely should be applauded and lifted up! They brought this victory home in a BIG way!”

Her interview sparked a conversation on Twitter, and many users were calling her out on the platform.

One podcaster Kinsey Clarke tweeted: “Eva Longoria can try to downplay the significance of black women securing the presidency for Democrats all she wants, but she hasn’t been relevant since Desperate Housewives, So. Let’s not look to her for any political insight or analysis. Gone, girl.”

Author Daniel JosΓ© Older added: “This is not okay @EvaLongoria. Saying Black and Latina women as if they are 2 separate categories is erasure of Afro-Latinas. Saying yeah Black Women did a lot BUT Latinas are the REAL heroes is both wrong and foul. And a lot of our folks went for 45. We need to deal with that.”

Many users tweeted to say that Longoria’s claims were false.

According to statistics published by the Financial Times, most of Trump’s biggest gains were in Hispanic communities, particularly in Florida and Texas.

In a statement, the National Assn. of Hispanic Journalists publicly rebuked the star on Twitter: “Eva Longoria should apologize for her divisive comment about ‘real heroines.’ We have to stand up for Black women, including Black Latinas, who are standing up against injustice for all of us. White and brown Latinos must do more to fight racism in our newsrooms and beyond.”

Trumps Evangelical Advisor Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. Dies!

Donald Trump’s evangelical advisor Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. and senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland has died Monday at the age of 66.

After his death, the church released a statement saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we notify you that our beloved Bishop Harry R. Jackson, Jr. has transitioned to be with the Lord on November 9, 2020.”

Though Jackson aligned himself with the Republican Party by being conservative, passionately pro-life, and against same-sex marriage, he was also a prison reform advocate.

In 2005 he told Religion News Service, “What I believe is that the whole left and right paradigm that politics has chosen to create for itself is fundamentally incorrect because the Bible has both what we call left and right issues.”

Trump referred to Jackson as “a highly respected gentleman who is a member of our faith and a person that we have tremendous respect for,” when introducing him at a White House gathering back in April.

Jackson attended Trump’s speech at this year’s Republican National Convention. He was also present at the White House garden party in which Amy Coney Barrett’s appointment to the Supreme Court was announced. The event was deemed a coronavirus superspreader event by infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.

While his cause of death is currently unknown, his church says that he was not among the many who tested positive for coronavirus after the announcement event.

Bishop Harry Jackson was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2005, and while he was being treated, he suffered a stroke.

According to RNS, during a 2015 interview with The 700 Club, he said he was “24 hours away from dying.”
