The Daily Buzz For Nov 20 ☕πŸ“°☕

Gina Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union, Emma Roberts and Ellen Pompeo for Porter Edit!
Ellen Pompeo, Gina Rodriguez, Emma Roberts and Gabrielle Union are on the cover of the latest issue of PorterEdit, out now.

Here’s what the four stars had to say…

Ellen, on fair pay: “We’re in very rarified air. Women with normal jobs are in different situations to us, so I sort of feel very out of touch or arrogant, even, to talk about my fight for my pay because I was in a very specific situation where I had a very real number. I had seen that Grey’s Anatomy had grossed 3.7 billion dollars over 15 years, and I could take that very real number and attribute my face, my voice. […] Even though we struggle in our industries, we’re struggling a lot less than, let’s say, people who are working normal jobs.”

Gabrielle, on fair pay: “You feel like a jackass; you feel like you should just be grateful and be quiet because it’s more [money] than others [make]. But at the same time, when those lists come out, when Forbes drops the top-paid actresses in television or the top-paid actresses in film, and there’s no women of color on it, it’s like well why didn’t you speak up?”
Emma, on fair pay: “I’ve taken less money knowing I’m taking less than a male costar, because they’re telling me this is as much as we’re going to give you; your male costar is getting more, if you don’t take this deal, another girl will. And I take it because I’m so passionate [about the project]. I was embarrassed to tell my friends, because what if my girlfriends are making as much money as their male costars.”

Gina, on fair pay: “I’ve recently been faced with being offered a project where my fellow actress was offered it prior [to me], and she tells me how much she was getting paid for it, and then I ask for the same amount and they say no because you’re not worth that much, and she was because she’s bigger than I am. But it’s the same job, the same amount of hours.”

3 DEAD, including police officer and Doctor after shooting at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center on Chicago's South Side!
Three people have died -- including a police officer -- after a shooting at a hospital on Chicago's South side, according to officials.
The three victims who were shot all died of their injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The shooting suspect is also dead, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford told ABC News.

The shooting began as a verbal altercation between a man and a woman near Michigan Avenue outside of the Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in the city's Bronzeville District, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters Tuesday evening.
After a friend of one of the individuals tried to intervene, the man then lifted up his shirt, showing that he was armed, Johnson said.
The acquaintance then fled into the hospital, and the man fired at the woman in the parking lot, killing her, Johnson said. The couple was in a domestic relationship, and the woman was an employee at the hospital, Johnson said.
Police officers then responded to the scene and observed the suspect with a handgun. The man then fired multiple shots at the officers before they could even exit their cars, and the officers chased him as he ran into the hospital, Johnson said.
Officers then exchanged gunfire with the suspect inside the hospital. A female staff member who was inside an elevator and a police officer who were both struck by gunfire also died.
One of the women killed was a doctor, while the other was a pharmaceutical assistant, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said during the news conference.

"The City of Chicago lost a doctor, pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer, all going about their day, all doing what they love," Emanuel said.
It is unclear if the suspect died by police gunfire or if he died from a self-inflicted shot, Johnson said.
The officer was identified by the department as Samuel Jimenez, Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer for the Chicago Police Department, wrote on Twitter, describing the deadly attack as a "senseless active shooter incident."
Jimenez "saved a lot of lives," Johnson said, adding that the suspect "was just shooting" and they "just don't know how much damage he was prepared to do."
"Today, the Fraternal Order of Police lost a valued brother -- a courageous police officer who got up this morning, went to work and wanted to protect the city of Chicago," said Kevin Graham, president of Chicago chapter of the police union. "He did that today, and he did so with his life."

Law enforcement swarmed the scene near the hospital after shots were fired near 26th Street and Michigan Avenue, Guglielmi said.
Officers were executing a "methodical" search of the hospital in the wake of the shooting, Guglielmi said. The hospital later tweeted that the building was secured and that patients were safe.

#RHoA: Oh Really? Porsha Williams Thinks 'Hateful and Miserable' Kandi Burruss Is 'Obsessed' with Her Relationship
Porsha responds to her "Real Housewives of Atlanta" co-star spilling all kinds of tea about her baby daddy: "We're not friends."
"Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Kandi Burruss has spent much of Season 11 talking about Porsha Williams' relationship -- and Porsha is over it.

A very pregnant Porsha stopped by "Watch What Happens Live" Sunday night, following a super juicy episode of "RHOA," to address everything her co-star has been saying about her and her baby daddy, Dennis McKinley.
"Watching tonight's episode, I just thought that Kandi just came off hateful and miserable," Porsha told Andy Cohen. "I didn't really know that this was even coming. Mind you, we were cool talking on the phone, and then she turned around and pulled up my ex-assistant like Phaedra did with [Kandi's] ex-assistant."

Sunday's episode showed Kandi having a conversation with Porsha's former assistant, Jami Ziegler, about Dennis. Jami said her friend was dating Dennis for "two-and-a-half, three years" when he got with Porsha. "When we were in Africa, she found out 'cause her friend texted her and said that he's with Porsha now, and so it was a big situation. She was crying!" Jami told Kandi, who said she knew of numerous other women Dennis was dating during that time.

Prior to that conversation, though, Kandi FaceTimed Porsha, and the two had a seemingly friendly exchange. Many thought it was a sign they were rekindling their friendship after that explosive Season 9 reunion at the hands of Phaedra Parks, but Porsha told Andy the FaceTime call was actually "drier than [Kandi's] personality."

"We're not friends," she added after the audience let out a collective, "Oooooh."
A caller then asked Porsha, "Why does it seem that Kandi is always the one that has the dirt on the men that come on the show every season?"

"Hmmm, maybe because she's got-- You know, I don't know," Porsha replied. "I haven't really paid attention to what she does to other people, I just found it a little odd that she was doing it to me being that we're supposed to be doing better. So, I don't know. Everybody finds dirt on somebody's man on the show, I just feel like she just went very far to bring out the dirt on Dennis. She's a little bit obsessed with us."
Miss Lawrence -- SherΓ©e Whitfield's former hairstylist -- was sitting beside Porsha and told her she shouldn't be "bothered" by Kandi's comments because that's just the nature of the show.
"But is it normally somebody who you have a truce with?" she asked Miss Lawrence. "Who you're supposed to be moving forward with? No. That's the answer."

"The Real Housewives of Atlanta" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

#NewMusic from Ne-Yo ‘Superstition’ (Stevie Wonder Cover)
Check out Ne-Yo’s version of the timeless hit “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. The song is his contribution to the Motown Magic soundtrack which just released, just days before the November 20 premiere of Josh Wakely’s animated Netflix series.

The series’ theme song – and the soundtrack’s lead-off track – is “ABC,” with 11-year-old Zacary James (Melisizwe Brothers) singing lead. “ABC” is one of the Jackson 5’s signature songs and charted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April of 1970, knocking The Beatles’ “Let It Be” off the top of the tally.

Other artists featured on the album, produced by Wakely, include Becky G, BJ The Chicago Kid, Skylar Grey, Calum Scott and Trombone Shorty. Motown legend Smokey Robinson, Executive Music Producer for the series, contributes newly recorded versions of two hits that he co-wrote for other artists: “My Girl,” which was The Temptations’ first No. 1 hit, and “I’ll Be Doggone,” which was Marvin Gaye’s first single to top the R&B chart and has never before been recorded by Robinson. The soundtrack’s recordings were produced by Don Was, Harvey Mason Jr., Bob Mothersbaugh and Sean Carey.

David's Bridal files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, aims to stay in business
David's Bridal, the nation's largest wedding retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday with plans to stay in business.
The company is saddled with hundreds of millions of dollars in debt from a private-equity buyout several years ago and faces a surge of digital competition.

David's Bridal assured customers that its bankruptcy would not disrupt their weddings – in part because it secured support from key lenders to stay alive. It expects to continue operating more than 300 stores and its website.

"Orders will arrive on time and bridal appointments will not be impacted," the retailer said.
Another wedding retailer, Alfred Angelo, left brides and grooms in a lurch in 2017 when it suddenly liquidated.
David's Bridal said it won't suffer a similar fate.

"For more than 60 years, David's has delivered beautiful, high-quality dresses and accessories for our customers' most special occasions, and the actions we are taking will enable us to build on that tradition," David's Bridal CEO Scott Key said in a statement. "Our team is laser-focused on providing brides and their families with the five-star service and experience they deserve and have come to expect from us."

The company is grappling with a decline in spending on wedding dresses, as more brides choose alternatives, including cheaper ones online, and couples wait longer to get married.
The average price paid for a wedding dress fell 3.5 percent to $1,509 in 2017, according to TheKnot.
The retailer filed what's known to restructuring experts as a "prepackaged bankruptcy," which typically means the reorganization process is negotiated ahead of time with creditors who stipulate that the debtor will enter Chapter 11.

With support from certain lenders locked in, David's Bridal said it hopes to finish its bankruptcy by early January and emerge with $400 million less debt.
David’s Bridal still sells about 1 in 3 U.S. wedding dresses, according to market research firm IBISWorld. The company also sells prom dresses and other wedding items.

The chain projected 2018 revenue of $721 million and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $75 million, according to a court filing.
Since David's Bridal's product suppliers will get paid in full, there's little reason for engaged couples to worry, said Angelo Thalassinos, senior legal analyst for restructuring research firm Reorg.

The "vast majority" of the company's stores are profitable when factoring out debt payments, said Mark Fischer, director of credit research for Reorg.
"This is about realigning the debt and the capital structure with the company’s operations and not about aggressive store closings," Fischer said.

The trend of Americans waiting longer to get married, or deciding not to altogether, has hurt David's Bridal. The number of new marriages per 1,000 Americans was 6.9 in 2016, down from 8.2 in 2000, representing a decline of about 16 percent  in the wedding rate, according to the U.S. government.

Cicely Tyson, 93, Wows as She Makes History to Become First Black Woman to Win Honorary Oscar
Cicely Tyson capped her legendary career in Hollywood on Sunday when she took home an honorary Oscar.
Just a month before she turns 94, Tyson wowed in a metallic dress with shiny gloves and chic chin-length hair as she became the first black woman to receive an honorary statuette from the Academy.
The iconic performer — who has starred in projects like Fried Green Tomatoes, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, The Help and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter — was previously nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 1973 Academy Awards for her work in Sounder.

Tyler Perry, Ava DuVernay and Quincy Jones presented Tyson with the award. DuVernay called Tyson “the seed for so many of us, the rose that we adore.”

“Her work, grace, dignity, class, humility and profound professionalism firmly placed her on the pedestal of Hollywood royalty, and now, at long last, I could not be more honored to say that tonight, Cicely Tyson receives her more than well-deserved Oscar,” Jones said.
Tyson then delivered her acceptance speech. “I don’t know that I would cherish a better gift,” Tyson said. “This is the culmination of all those years of haves and have not.”

At her buzzy table, which Oprah Winfrey offered a peek at in a group shot, Tyson mingled with Shonda Rhimes, Anita Hill and Winfrey.
“Here at the Academy Governor’s Awards celebrating Royalty!” Winfrey gushed. “Ms. Cicely Tyson’s getting a long overdue Oscar! And yes that IS THe Anita Hill standing behind chair!”

Rapper Tekashi69 among 4 arrested on racketeering, weapons charges
(WABC) -- Federal authorities have arrested rapper Tekashi69 on racketeering charges.
The 22-year-old rapper, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was one of four people taken into custody Sunday.
The arrests appear to be connected to a shooting at a party last month on the Upper East Side.

Among those arrested are the victim, Faheem "Crippy" Walter, who was shot during the fight, and Tekashi69's recently-fired former manager, 36-year-old Kifano "Shotti" Jordan. Jensel "Ish" Butler was also arrested.
They are all charged with racketeering and firearms possession.

The rapper, also known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, has been one of the most ascendant and controversial names in hip-hop in recent months. His debut album, Day69, was among the most downloaded records on iTunes following its February release.
But he also has had a series of run-ins with law enforcement and has publicly identified himself as a member of a violent New York gang. He recently pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in Brooklyn Criminal Court in connection with a May traffic stop.

In a 2015 case in New York, 6ix9ine was sentenced to probation for his involvement in a sexually explicit video of a 13-year-old girl.
The video, posted on social media, showed the girl performing a sex act on another man while 6ix9ine "stands behind the child making a thrusting motion with his pelvis and smacking her on her buttocks," according to court documents.

The shooting occurred outside what was a party to celebrate Tekashi69 receiving probation in that child sex case earlier in the day.

Stan Lee’s Team Responds To Bill Maher’s “Disgusting” Comments About Marvel Legend And Comic Books
In a response to Bill Maher’s recent remarks about the death of Stan Lee and comic books, the Marvel legend’s team at POW! Entertainment posted an open letter to the Real Time host that criticized his commentary he posted over the weekend.

On the Real Time With Bill Maher blog, Maher recognized that the world is mourning Lee’s death but then went on to say that Lee “inspired millions to, I don’t know, watch a movie” with his signature sarcasm. He also went on to put comic books on blast: “Now, I have nothing against comic books – I read them now and then when I was a kid and I was all out of Hardy Boys,” he wrote. “But the assumption everyone had back then, both the adults and the kids, was that comics were for kids, and when you grew up you moved on to big-boy books without the pictures.”

He continued to criticize how adults don’t give up “kid stuff” and says that they have “pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature.” He adds that there are over 4,500 colleges in America and that “we need more professors than we have smart people” before saying that “dumb people got to be professors” for writing theses about comic books.

POW! wasn’t about to let this go unnoticed. On their website, they posted a letter to Maher saying that great creators like Lee “make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human being.” The letter adds, ” One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare.”

POW! then went on to drag Maher saying that him saying Lee inspired people to “watch a movie” was disgusting. “Countless people can attest to how Stan inspired them to read, taught them that the world is not made up of absolutes, that heroes can have flaws and even villains can show humanity within their souls,” the letter said.

Read the letter in its entirety below.

Mr. Maher: Comic books, like all literature, are storytelling devices. When written well by great creators such as Stan Lee, they make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings. One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare.

But to say that Stan merely inspired people to “watch a movie” is in our opinion frankly disgusting. Countless people can attest to how Stan inspired them to read, taught them that the world is not made up of absolutes, that heroes can have flaws and even villains can show humanity within their souls. He gave us the X-Men, Black Panther, Spider-Man and many other heroes and stories that offered hope to those who felt different and bullied while inspiring countless to be creative and dream of great things to come.

These are but a few of the things we the fans of Stan Lee also consider “adulting,” because life both as a child and grown-up can indeed be a struggle. Stan is the author of millions of happy childhood memories and the provider of so many of the positive tools of adulthood.

Our shock at your comments makes us want to say “‘Nuff said, Bill,” but instead we will rely on another of Stan’s lessons to remind you that you have a powerful platform, so please remember: “With great power there must also come — great responsibility!”

-Team Stan…POW!

Because Nobody Can Take a Joke The WHCD Won’t Invite a Comedian Next Year!
It’s official: Next year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner will not feature a good old-fashioned roasting by a comedian. In a statement, the White House Correspondents’ Association announced today that it has selected author and presidential biographer Ron Chernow as the speaker of 2019’s ceremony, confirming earlier speculation that both the White House and journalists can’t take a joke in today’s political climate — especially not a joke about smoky eyes by Michelle Wolf.

“It will not surprise you to hear that my email inbox is overflowing with advice on how to improve the dinner,” WHCA president Olivier Knox said in an interview back in April following Michelle Wolf’s WHCD performance, which drew criticism from Donald Trump and others. Knox followed it up with a list of changes the ceremony might include: “No entertainer. No comic. A serious speaker. Maybe a musician. Maybe don’t televise it.”
“The White House Correspondents’ Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment, and I am happy to oblige. Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics,” Chernow said on the news. “My major worry these days is that we Americans will forget who we are as a people and historians should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storehouse of memory. While I have never been mistaken for a stand-up comedian, I promise that my history lesson won’t be dry.”

Michelle Wolf responded to the news on Twitter, saying, “The @whca are cowards. The media is complicit. And I couldn’t be prouder.”

The Rolling Stones will return to the US next spring for a new leg of tour dates.

The Stones have also hinted at a new music in the works. “We have some stuff down, which is very interesting. “I’m going to sound like Trump — ‘It will happen; don’t worry about it’ — but it’s in the early stages,” guitarist Keith Richards told The Wall Street Journal earlier this year. “We have some stuff down, which is very interesting. It’s more difficult for us to write together the further apart we are, but it also has its benefits in that we come back to it from a different angle.” In September, frontman Mick Jagger shared a short video of himself playing harmonica with the caption, “New tunes.”

Rolling Stones released a covers album of blues music entitled, Blue & Lonesome, back in 2016. Their last original recordings, “Doom and Gloom” and “One More Shot”, were included on the 2012 greatest hits album GRRR!.
