The Daily Buzz For April 18☕📰☕

#MAGFAB: The Wedding Banquet Star Bowen Yang For Bustle Magazine

BUSTLE published its special Queer Love Issue, featuring cover star Bowen Yang ahead of the release of his new rom-com, THE WEDDING BANQUET.
In the wide-ranging and in-depth profile, the SNL fan-favorite Yang opens up about everything from being on the husband search, to the dissociative breakdown he had while filming WICKED, and where his parents currently stand with his sexuality.
On how the tenderness on display in The Wedding Banquet has changed his perception on dating: “locked me into this notion, finally — not that I was ever a slut — of like, ‘I’ve got to be on the husband search…I can’t suffer these fools anymore.”

On his dissociative breakdown while filming Wicked: “I’m not here to talk about how fame is hard or something…but I’m saying we’ve never been more aware, as late millennials to older Gen Zers, of how to protect yourself because you know exactly how dangerous and noxious and horrible it is to be regarded in any capacity.”

On how he re-grounded himself: “I had to bottom out in a way…Please have that be the pull quote…It was just knowing that there are things you have to know about yourself. I think the thing about your 30s is that you have to start facing yourself. It’s such an eye rolly thing to say. But I think that’s what the White Lotus was about.”
On how things are today with his parents (after they sent him to a conversion camp when he was younger): “They don’t want to hear all the nitty-gritty shit, but they’re asking if I’m dating anybody. I never thought it would get to that point.”

On being back in NYC: “I’m such an asshole here…there’s just something in the air here.”
On his new washer-dryer: “I felt like I was at the f*ckin’ Ritz.”
On turning down being grand marshal of the Queer Liberation March: “It was a lot of my own personal inadequacy and my own inferiority complex…I was like, give it to the elders. I think the year before it was Miss Major…I’m not ever going to be on that kind of pedestal. Someone like her is, was, and always will be.”

On watching The Wedding Banquet for the first time while closeted at NYU: “It ends on this very uncertain tone…There’s a moment of affection, then it’s awkward. And that was something I had to be in bed with, because I was just like, ‘See, this is my life.’”

On representation in film today: “I still haven’t quite made up my mind on what the agreed-upon history of representation has been for Asian people and queer people…I don’t know if I necessarily like the current state of queer storytelling over the way it was 20 years ago. They’re all valid.”
On why representation isn’t his main motivation: “If that’s purely the motivating thing, then I don’t know — it literally is disembodying. Then it’s not about me. It’s like when you can’t fall asleep because you’re so out of your own symbiotic reality.”

On feeling like a true New Yorker: “As long as I can remember, it was always about going to the East Coast…I was romanticizing this idea of being here for so long, and now I’m like, ‘I’ve collected every New Yorker badge.’”
On how queer comedians used to be “siloed away”: “There’d be the one gay guy in improv, one gay guy in a sketch group. You’d have a lesbian stand-up you would run into once a year…There was no queer comedy exchange, no dial-up.”
On finding community in queer comedy with fellow comedians like Julio Torres, Patti Harrison, and Sydney Washington: “You had these people who had this shorthand with you, that you could drop your shoulders around…Like tapping into the same frequency.”

On working with Andrew Ahn on The Wedding Banquet: “I’ve had so many lucky moments and breaks in life…Knowing him, meeting him, and working with him ranks probably number one…He’s my favorite person, my favorite filmmaker.”
On if he’ll be staying in NYC: “I think I’m a lifer…It takes time to build t
hat sh*t up anywhere you are, especially here, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give that up. I’m never going to abandon them.”

Cool.

#RHOA: NeNe Leakes Says Kenya Moore’s ‘RHOA’ Exit Forced Bravo To Bring Back Phaedra Parks: ‘They Wanted Her To Help Save’
NeNe Leakes is weighing in on Kenya Moore’s departure from ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta.’
On a recent episode of her new talk show, NeNe Leakes referred to Kenya Moore as a “fire starter,” saying that’s a big part of what makes the show entertaining. With Kenya Moore gone, NeNe Leakes believes Bravo had no choice but to bring in Phaedra Parks.

“This is why they went and got Phaedra. They wanted Phaedra to try to come on and help save. That’s what it feels like,” Leakes stated.

Is she speaking facts?

#MusicNews:Marvin Sapp Releasing New Song “Close The Door”

After weeks of attempting to explain himself, Marvin Sapp is leaning into his craft in reference to the viral video of him asking ushers to “close the doors” during church offering.
Sapp, 58, revealed that he would be releasing new inspirational song “Close The Door” this Friday. “The last few weeks have been tough. Misunderstood, misrepresented, misinterpreted, and even maligned,” Sapp shared via an Instagram post Wednesday (April 16). “But I’ve learned that when life hands you lemons, you don’t just make lemonade… you build the lemonade company. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

He went on, “‘Close the Door’ isn’t just a song, it’s a soundtrack for survival. I’m releasing it this Good Friday, the day we honor the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Just like He closed the door on death, Hell, and the grave, I’m closing the door on the noise, the pain, and everything that tried to break me.

The gospel artist faced backlash in March due to a viral video of him at the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World National Convocation, where he told ushers to “close the doors” until $40K in offerings were collected from both the live and online congregation. The video resulted in Sapp being harassed and even threatened, he told The Rickey Smiley Morning Show shortly after the clip flooded the internet.

“This song will bless you,” he went on. “I believe that with everything in me. My assignment in this season through this song is to help you close the door too.”

Tyra Banks Thinks Taylor Swift Should Star In ‘The Bodyguard’ Remake
Tyra Banks has thoughts about the planned remake of the 1992 classic romantic thriller, The Bodyguard.
Her first idea? Taylor Swift should be cast as the lead. While co-hosting on TODAY With Jenna & Friends, Banks theorized who should take over the starring roles following the precedent set by the late Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

“I think Taylor Swift, because business, commerce, art, and she would frickin’ sell like crazy,” quipped the America’s Next Top Model creator.
When asked who should star alongside Swift, Banks kept the interracial romance trope and replied, “But, okay, I’m just gonna be real, I’m a Black girl. It was Whitney Houston as a Black girl [and] Kevin Costner as a White man. What if we flipped it, and it was Taylor Swift and Idris Elba?”

Jenna Bush Hager immediately cheered, adding, “That is good!” Banks chimed in, “Right?! That would be so hot.”
She’s even going to use her own “friendship” with Elba to try to make it happen. “We’re like WhatsApp friends right now. I’m like, ‘Are you down?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, Banks.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna make this happen.’ I feel like we should do, like, the romance thing,” she joked.

Bush Hager asked Banks if she’d star in the remake and Banks declared, “Hell no. We need somebody that can really sing.”
Per Deadline, The Bodyguard remake is being produced by Warner Bros. and set to helmed by Sam Wrench, who directed Swift’s Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film.
The outlet noted, “No casting has been set, but after the [success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour], it certainly will be a casting process to watch.”

Megan Thee Stallion wants Tory Lanez held in contempt over his deposition conduct, calling it “disruptive, inflammatory, and inconsistent with the basic norms of civil litigation.”
In a motion filed by her attorney, Megan Thee Stallion urges the court to take action in her civil case against blogger Milagro Cooper, who she claims “has used her social media accounts to spread defamatory statements, deepfake porn videos, and outright lies about [Megan] at the behest and command of Mr. Peterson.”

During the deposition, Tory Lanez allegedly feigned confusion over simple words like “discuss” and “approve.”
Megan Thee Stallion‘s team also says he insulted her attorney, describing her hair dye as “distracting” and suggesting she “bring a hairbrush” next time.
An email from Tory Lanez‘s criminal appeal lawyers states they don’t represent him in the civil matter and won’t oppose contempt charges.

Megan previously received a restraining order, telling the judge she needed it “because I haven’t been at peace since I [was] shot.”

U.K. Supreme Court Rules Only Individuals Born Female Qualify As Women Under Law, Limiting Transgender Access To Female-Only Spaces

The U.K. Supreme Court ruled that only those born female can be legally defined as women, marking a landmark judgment. “Britain’s top court ruled only those born female can be considered women,” excluding transgender women from this legal definition.
The decision follows a “yearslong legal battle over protections for women and female-only spaces.” It could lead to “tighter limits on female-only spaces and services” and affect “the protections and freedoms given to transgender women in the U.K.”

Donald Trump added fuel to the debate in February, stating schools allowing trans athletes on female teams “could be at risk of losing federal funding.”

Lenny Kravitz Has a Private Nightclub in the Basement of His Paris Home
Lenny Kravitz revealed that his lavish Paris home has an entire nightclub in the basement.
The legendary musician gave Architectural Digest a tour of his sprawling Paris home, which he affectionately calls Hotel Roxie.
“It was named after my mother because it was her dream to come live in Paris,” he said in a video of the walkthrough linked up top.

The house looks like a Kravitz Pinterest board. There’s beautiful, abstract art on the walls and floors, a grand piano in the entry hall that wouldn’t be out of place in a concert orchestra, and even an entire room dedicated to his mother, Roxie. It’s a stunning home—one that no Airbnb or music video mansion could ever match.
Babe wake up, Lenny Kravitz’s Architectural Digest feature of his Parisian townhouse just dropped!
Another highlight of the house is the Grand Salon, which is an entire room dedicated to boxing legend Muhammed Ali. “What I love about Muhammad Ali is the humanitarian work, the civil rights work, he was a freedom fighter, and that is so important,” explained Kravitz about why he designed the room after him.
What Kravitz described as the “heart and soul” of his house is the club in his basement. Practically an A24 movie come to life, the cozy venue is filled with red lighting and featured people of all ages inside having drinks and dancing their asses off. Kravitz even joined the fun to shake his dreads and tailfeather.
Lenny Kravitz’s real estate portfolio is ridiculous he’s got the Fazenda in Brasil, the haunted loft in New Orleans, The boujee Paris apartment with the Basquiat hanging in the lobby, the pad in LA, the penthouse in Nolita and the random trailer in the Bahamas.

At the end of the tour, Kravitz takes the time to explain what the house means to him. “It represents so many parts of my history, my story, and evolution,” he explained. Then, he revealed that he won’t make any more changes to the house in his lifetime and that his daughter, Zoë, can do so after he dies.

Kravitz’s Parisian paradise is only one piece of the real estate portfolio that he’s become known for online. According to Travel Noire, he also owns a nearly 1000-acre former coffee plantation in Brazil as well as a customized Airstream trailer in the Bahamas.

LaTocha Scott was crushed Tamika didn’t leave Xscape, too
Scott sat down with famed TV personality NeNe Leakes on her eponymous podcast to discuss a treasure trove of intriguing topics about the group, the music industry, her marriage tumult and, of course, the strife that exists between her and her sister.

LaTocha Scott said she stood up for her sister before LaTocha Scott said that she was the one who stood up for her sister when Tamika Scott got pregnant back in the day and Xscape members reportedly wanted to kick her out of the group.
“I remember when we were about to do ‘Understanding,’ the song was getting ready to come out, and she had gotten pregnant. And I’ll never forget. They were like, ‘Okay, we’re going to kick her out.’ That bothered me,” LaTocha Scott recalls. “I felt a way, but I couldn’t give up on my sister. You know what I told them? She goes, I go. That could have been my whole career. I wouldn’t have been sitting here.”

LaTocha Scott claims Tamika didn’t support her
Scott continues, saying that sister Tamika did not reciprocate the kind of loyalty to her when she left Xscape in 2022 to pursue a solo gospel career.
“You wouldn’t have been asking me about Xscape. Because that’s the love and the loyalty that I had. So does it hurt to know that? Yes. It’s deep. Very deep.”
The public was able to see the scandal that mushroomed between the sisters on the reality series, Bravo’s “SWV & Xscape: The Queens of R&B.” Tamika Scott leveled devastating blows against her sister, accusing LaTocha and her husband, Rocky Bivens, of mismanaging the group and allegedly stealing royalty

LaTocha Scott attempts to reconcile with sister

Recently, LaTocha Scott has attempted to reconcile her relationship with Tamika Scott, particularly by belting out the “Residuals” freestyle song that went viral in February 2025.
On the YouTube show, Scott said the siblings have since sat down to talk, but she gave no indication if resentments still simmer beneath the surface.

Halle Bailey joins A24 musical comedy with stellar cast

Halle Bailey is stepping into a new musical venture, joining forces with Jesse Eisenberg for his upcoming directorial project at A24. The untitled musical comedy brings together an extraordinary ensemble including Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Havana Rose Liu, and Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, creating what industry insiders anticipate will be a powerful creative combination.

This project marks Eisenberg’s return to the director’s chair following his critically acclaimed film A Real Pain, which secured the Best Original Screenplay accolade at the 2025 Academy Awards. His directorial journey began with When You Finish Saving the World in 2023, which also featured Moore in a leading role, establishing their creative partnership.

Behind the narrative
The storyline revolves around Moore’s character, a woman described as reserved and introverted, who unexpectedly finds herself cast in a local community theater’s musical production. As the narrative unfolds, viewers will witness her transformation as she immerses herself deeply in the role, pushing boundaries and exploring the profound psychological impact of artistic expression.

The film promises to examine the transformative nature of performance art and how stepping into another persona can reveal hidden aspects of one’s own identity. This thematic exploration aligns with Eisenberg’s previous work, which often delves into complex character studies and psychological nuance.

Production details
The production boasts impressive backing, with Academy Award winner Emma Stone and her creative partner Dave McCary producing through Stone’s Fruit Tree banner. Ali Herting joins the producing team, while Topic Studios takes on executive production responsibilities, ensuring the project maintains artistic integrity while reaching commercial potential.

A24’s involvement as the distribution partner signals significant industry confidence in the creative direction. The independent entertainment company has established itself as a home for distinctive, auteur-driven projects that challenge conventional storytelling approaches while achieving critical acclaim.

Supporting ensemble
The supporting cast brings additional depth to the production with Eldar Isgandarov, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy, and Bonnie Milligan rounding out the ensemble. Each performer brings unique theatrical and cinematic experience to the project, creating a dynamic range of performances that complement the musical comedy format.

Industry analysts note that A24’s involvement signals confidence in the project’s artistic merit, as the studio continues its tradition of supporting distinctive voices in filmmaking. The combination of Eisenberg’s writing sensibilities with musical elements creates an intriguing premise that stands apart in the current film landscape.

Bailey’s expanding portfolio
For Bailey, this role represents another strategic career move following her breakthrough performances in Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid and the musical drama The Color Purple. Her trajectory continues upward with a recently announced lead role opposite Regé-Jean Page in Universal Pictures’ forthcoming film Italianna.

Music remains central to Bailey‘s artistic expression, having first gained recognition as part of the musical duo Chloe x Halle before transitioning to screen roles that frequently showcase her vocal talents. This A24 musical comedy provides another platform for her to demonstrate the versatility that has made her one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young performers.

Industry implications
The project arrives at an interesting moment for movie musicals, which have experienced varied commercial success in recent years. With streamers and traditional studios alike seeking content that provides distinct viewing experiences, theatrical musical productions represent both creative risk and potential reward. Eisenberg’s approach to the genre, informed by his character-driven storytelling style, promises a fresh perspective.

While production timelines and release dates remain unannounced, the film has generated significant industry buzz based on the creative team and cast assembled. A24’s distribution strategy will likely position the film for both critical recognition and audience engagement, potentially including festival premieres before wider release.

This untitled musical comedy adds to A24’s diverse slate of projects, reinforcing the studio’s reputation for supporting filmmaker-driven content across genres. As production moves forward, additional details regarding musical compositions, choreography, and visual style will likely emerge, providing further insight into Eisenberg’s vision for this unique theatrical story.

Bobby Brown says Britney Spears 'butchered' his hit 'My Prerogative': 'I couldn't take it'
Everybody's talkin' all this stuff about Britney Spears. At least Bobby Brown is.
The singer was not impressed with her take on his 1988 song, "My Prerogative," which Spears released in 2004, as part of her greatest hits collection. Tell me why, you say?

"I don't think they really did justice to any of the samples," Brown said Wednesday on the Club Shay Shay podcast, when he was asked about the best use of his music. "Like Britney Spears butchered, she butchered 'Prerogative.' Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that, you know, I ... I couldn't take it."

When host Shannon Sharpe protested that the former New Edition star had cleared use of the song, Brown explained why.
"I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears, and I was thinking..." Brown started.
Sharpe interjected, "She going to do it good. She going to do it right."
"Yeah," Brown answered. "Teddy Riley's doing it too. So, you know, but I felt it was a butchering."
Artists who left bands for successful solo careers
Jon M. Chu says Britney Spears will be involved in biopic

He said that it's made him more cautious about letting his music be used by other artists.
"Yes, I got to hear it," Brown said when Sharpe asked what it took for him to allow his tracks to be used. "Because you don't know what these kids will say these days. You know, these kids will say some s--- that, you know, you don't want your song associated with."
Both versions of "My Prerogative" were successful. For Brown, who wrote the song as a public response to his departure from the boy band New Edition, it was a No. 1 hit, the second single from his second solo album, Don't Be Cruel. Riley helped cowrite and produce that track as well as ones from artists such as Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, and the late Whitney Houston.

It was a bigger hit internationally for Spears, who married Kevin Federline the month that it was released as the first single from her album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. The other songs featured included beloved bangers such as "Toxic," "I'm a Slave for You," and " ...Baby One More Time."

Tyrese Owes $112k in Back Child Support

Three years ago Tyrese was ordered to pay nearly $11k a month in child support to his second ex wife, Samantha Gibson
In a new motion Samantha claims Tyrese has only paid the full amount three times and is actively fighting to lower his support obligations...

From In Touch: Tyrese Gibson’s ex-wife Samantha Gibson pleaded with a Georgia judge to throw out his lawsuit seeking to lower his child support payments due to his income dropping drastically, In Touch can exclusively report.
Samantha filed a motion to dismiss, obtained by In Touch, on February 14. She explained Tyrese, 46, was ordered to pay her $10,690 per month in child support for their 5-year-old daughter named Soraya.
Samantha was awarded primary custody in 2023. In her filing, Samantha opposed Tyrese’s petition, filed in state court, to reduce the $10,690 a month he pays in child support.

She said Tyrese appealed the child support order in a separate petition with the Georgia Supreme Court, where he makes an argument that the monthly child support that was awarded was not permitted pursuant to their terms of their premarital contract.
In addition, Samantha said despite Tyrese being ordered to pay $10,690 per month in child support starting September 2022, “he has only paid the full monthly amount three times.”
Samantha said Tyrese has been held in willful contempt three separate times by Fulton County Court, including an incarceration order.”
She claimed that Tyrese currently owes her $107,850 in back support, along with $4,105 in interest, for a total amount owed of $111,955, as of February 14.
The judge has yet to rule.

Meagan Good Reflects on Her Divorce From DeVon Franklin: ‘He Left Me'
Meagan Good says that it was DeVon Franklin who "left" her leading to their 2022 divorce.
The actress was a guest on an upcoming episode of Zeus' The Jason Lee Show, and in the clip below, suggested that it was her ex-husband who wanted to end things. Good, 43, and Franklin, 47, were married from 2012 to 2022.
"What I can say is, it’s not that anybody did anything wrong. I can’t say that he fucked that up and I can’t say that I fucked that up," Good explained.

"We grew from it," she continued. "I don’t think that any time was wasted. I think that everything in life, every single season, you do learn so much, and you do grow so much, and you give so much, and you do get so much."
The former Harlem star expressed that she was "thankful" for her time with Franklin, which she said changed her "perspective" on moving forward. "It's my conscious mind in every single season to choose what best serves my quality of life and best serves the other person's quality of life," she said.

The exes met on the set of 2011 romantic comedy Jumping the Broom and married after less than a year of dating. Good and Franklin would also release a self-help book titled The Wait, which encouraged readers to be celibate until married like they were.
"My divorce shook me to my core," Good reflected on Club Shay Shay last year, around the 3-minute mark of the video below. "Lord, you asked me to be celibate, and I was; you told me to marry, and I married that person. I tried to do everything to the best of my ability, and no, I didn’t do everything perfect, but I don’t know if I could do anything differently if I’m being honest."

She continued, "My greatest fear was that my husband would leave me after 10 years of marriage, similar to my dad leaving my mom, and that’s exactly what happened."
The actress married Jonathan Majors last month during a private ceremony. Last December, Franklin announced his engagement to fitness trainer Maria Castillo, 28.

Will Smith Trolls “Bad Boys” Costar Martin Lawrence on His 60th Birthday: 'You Don't Look a Day Over 70'

Will Smith is wishing his longtime friend and costar, Martin Lawrence, a happy birthday!
Smith joked that Lawrence, who turned 60 on Wednesday, April 16, does not "look a day over 70" on Instagram alongside a photo of Lawrence wearing a large beard

The actors are best known for collaborating on the buddy cop series Bad Boys, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 7
Will Smith always has a joke at the ready for his friend, Martin Lawrence — even on his birthday.

On Wednesday, April 16, Lawrence celebrates his 60th birthday, and his Bad Boys costar Smith, 56, shared a photo of the two to Instagram showing Lawrence wearing tan robes and a large fake beard. "Happy Bday Marty Mar!! You don’t look a day over 70 ;-)," Smith jested in the caption.
Smith and Lawrence are longtime friends and costars, having shared the screen in the buddy cop action movie series Bad Boys, in which the two portray Miami detectives who investigate and fight against drug traffickers in the city. The original movie was released on April 7, 1995, and both Smith and Lawrence also took to Instagram on April 7 to celebrate that film's 30th anniversary.

“30 years ago @jerrybruckheimer, Don Simpson and @michaelbay took a chance on us and Bad Boys was born!! Grateful for all the love y’all have shown us thru the years 👊🏾,” they captioned the post, which displayed a number of behind-the-scenes photos from the film's set, including pictures of director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and cast members Michael Imperioli, Joe Pantoliano, Téa Leoni and Theresa Randle.

Smith and Lawrence made a second Bad Boys movie back in 2003 and then reunited for Bad Boys for Life in 2020. The fourth movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, was released in May 2024 and saw the pair's characters Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) go on the run after discovering massive corruption in Miami's police department
Back in June 2024, Smith shared on social media that Lawrence originally asked him to sign on to costar in the first Bad Boys movie without a finished script, something Smith said he was not fond of in the moment. "If you know me, you know I do NOT like flying blind like that. But it was my shot to work with w comedic genius like Martin - so I said, you know what? F%## it. I’m in," he wrote at the time. "And the rest is history. Thank you for tagging me in, Marty Mar. You are the definition of a Ride or Die."

Lawrence recently caught up with PEOPLE to discuss his new animated movie, Sneaks, which debuts in theaters on April 18. "I'm at that point now — I done did it all. So many things in my career and in my life and everything," he said, when asked about his milestone birthday.
"Now it's just about enjoying the fruits of my labor, doing what I want to do and spreading love," Lawrence added.

Fyre Festival 2 Officially Postponed With No New Date
Billy McFarland Pushes Back After Playa del Carmen Denies Fyre Fest 2
Fyre Festival 2 has been postponed and organizers are blaming the Mexican government for the sudden change. The event, originally scheduled for May 30 to June 2 in Playa del Carmen, was announced with bold claims of a comeback by Billy McFarland, the promoter behind the failed 2017 Fyre Festival.

Tickets for the new festival started at $1,400 and promised a multi-day experience featuring music, comedy, food, and more. But days after Mexico officials publicly denied the event had any official approval, organizers quietly notified ticket holders that the festival was off and refunds were being issued. A new date has not been announced.

McFarland claims the government in Playa del Carmen took money, issued permits, and promoted the event before abruptly cutting ties. He also shared screenshots and documents online to prove Fyre organizers had worked with officials. Mexican authorities responded by saying no such event was registered or permitted in the city or surrounding areas.
Despite the setback, McFarland says plans for Fyre Festival 2 will continue and a new location will be announced soon. For now, the festival is once again on hold and surrounded by controversy.
