EBONY Magazine is celebrating Black Male Brilliance!

EBONY Magazine tapped Black Thought and Questlove of The Roots for the cover of their October issue for a story on the iconic group titled "Band Of Brothers."  The upcoming article is a part of the magazine's ongoing series that celebrates #BlackMaleBrilliance.  The article's photos were shot by Shamayim (shown below with Questlove).

The October issue is on newsstands now and if you're in the NYC area, The Roots will be rocking a free concert on Thursday, October 8, at SummerStage in Central Park. Fans will also enjoy performances from special guests including Marsha Ambrosius, Bilal and DJ Talib Kweli.  Nice!

NeNe Leakes Tries to Pull Rank During NYFW

Tales from NeNe Leakes trip to New York for Fashion Week are filtering home and they are NOT cute… 

Sources tell Radar Online

NeNe and her husband Gregg Leakes brought along NeNe’s son Brentt, who stole and refused to move from a front row spot belonging to New York Post editor Johnny Oleksinski. When the 16-year-old was asked to move to his assigned seat away from his mother, Leakes went off in a rage.

“She was acting like such a diva,” sources told Radar. “She’s not polite and was being very rude.”

Though Brentt, who NeNe revealed on Twitter is “trying the fashion biz out,” was given another seat in the coveted front row, the Fashion Police guest insisted that her son stay in his stolen spot.

“She told him, ‘No you can sit there. You don’t have to move,'” though he eventually did before the show began.

The former RHOA star, who was clearly fed up with not getting special treatment, refused interviews at the show, was annoyed taking photos with attendees and texted during the entire presentation.

“She didn’t even want to be there,” the source said.

Well they treated her just she didn’t even want to be there!

So Porsha Williams Confirms Break Up With Duke Williams?

Remember when we told you that Porsha Williams was beautifully booed up with Buffalo Bills baller Duke Williams???

Well things are over between the housewife and the football star and Porsha confirmed it today with a shady tweet.

According to Porsha, Duke had his car repossessed while they were dating and she and had to pay for her own plane tickets to visit him.

Ooop!

But what prompted Porsha’s shade filled breakup post?

Rumors via BallerAlert that Porsha’s ex has already moved on with Sierra Alston of The Game’s “He’s Got Game” reality show.

But wait, is Sierra really with Duke Williams???

Answer must be NO because according to Sierra, that’s just her longtime friend.

First music, now fashion. FOX’s hit drama, “Empire,” is now making waves on Fifth Avenue. The pop culture phenomenon has its own fashion collection at the storied department store, Saks Fifth Avenue.

Oscar-nominated Lee Daniels kicked off the festivities at the department store during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 12 to celebrate the launch of the exclusive collection inspired by the show.

Cast members, sans Taraji P. Henson, whose flight was delayed, Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Gray,were on hand to celebrate the launch. Looking flawless and fab were Gabourey Sidibe (Becky), Ta’Rhonda Jones (Porsha) and Grace Gealey (Anika “Boo Boo Kitty” Calhoun), Terrence Howard (Lucious), Trai Byers (Andre), and Kaitlyn Doubleday (Rhonda).

The “Empire”-themed windows will be on display at the New York and Beverly Hills Saks Fifth Avenue flagships from Sept. 10 through Oct. 7. Shop the luxe “Empire” State of Mind collection here.

So now Tamar Braxton gives an Emotional Message To Fans About Delayed Album, ‘Calling All Lovers’ 

Tamar Braxton learned about the delayed release of her third studio album, Calling All Lovers, the same day we all did. And now, the singer is speaking out. Remember I spoke on this a few days ago

In a lengthy, heartfelt message on her Instagram page, the new Dancing With the Stars contestant opened up about the delay, the project and her emotions surrounding the release of her labor of love.

“I struggled with this post for about a week and finally I have the strength, the will & the WANT to say ANYTHING about #callingalllovers since I found out about it being pushed back around the same time you all did…all things happen for a reason,some we are still searching to find. Some unexplained. Some we know crystal clear. But the bottom line is I went against EVERYTHING I preached and believed “never let a person stop you”.. Never give up and that I did. I lost hope in something that is SO personal, SO real, So needed to say, SO needed to hear. Without thinking about MY purpose,which I know, but getting in my OWN way because of FEAR, Anger,& lost hope.”

“But here I AM because of a simple Choice: change your mind and your heart! This album is a blessing I thought I would NEVER have. Love and War wasn’t “supposed” to happen. I was written off & forgotten about. But for some reason God saw fit. And so I HAVE to look at THIS album as an extension to his blessings.

The siger goes on to reveal that she thinks Calling All Lover is better than her last LP, Love & War.

Calling All Lovers, which was supposed to be released on September 11, will now be available on October 2.

Wendy Williams Sends Her Son To Rehab

Monday talk show host and gossip queen Wendy Williams opened up to her audience about her teenage son and his addiction to synthetic marijuana. During her 'Hot Topics' segment she spoke candidly about how her 14 year old son, Kevin Jr., became addicted, despite the fact that she considers herself a pretty hands on parent. 

“So the most important thing that happened this summer, which was a life-changing thing for the Hunter family, is our son was made exposed to synthetic marijuana and he was exposed by a loved one who he looked up to. It's one of those pens where you don't see the smoke and you don't smell anything," Wendy admitted to her audience. She says that the 'loved one' who exposed her son to the drug has since gone to rehab and gotten clean. 

Wendy said her son's drug use came as a huge surprise. "I was duped. Our kid had been smoking this mess. He got turned out...to the point where he went off the rails for a moment. The reason that we, me and my husband and my son, we are choosing to share this with you, this is not a surprise to any of us. We’ve had several family meetings over the summer and it was so hard for me to be on the road because Kevin and Kevin Jr. were not there with me and I’m trying to make funny on the tour, but in actuality my heart is breaking and my son could’ve been dead.”

Wendy went on to urge parents to talk to their children and get familiar with how harmful synthetic marijuana is. “To the parents and guardians watching right now, just talk to your kids. This synthetic marijuana, there was only like 2 percent THC in it. The rest was of it was factory manufactured mess. Fortunately, Kevin has two parents who took harness of the thing. We took him out of the country for holistic treatment. We didn’t want to pump him up with psychiatric drugs and all that other kind of mess. I’m glad to say our boy is on the good side of good now.”

Wendy has admitted to her own drug use in the past. Synthetic marijuana is highly dangerous and it's side effects can include anything from hallucination to death by overdose. Good thing Wendy became hip to what her son was doing. It's amazing what kids could be doing right under our noses. 

GA Sheriff: Black Lives Matter Activists Are “Domestic Terrorists”?

Another case of well-meaning, so we assume, white people getting it all wrong has surfaced yet again in the ongoing counter-arguments against the Black Lives Matter movement. Gwinett County Sheriff Butch Conway issued a statement via a local Georgia news publication where he labeled activists from the anti-police brutality movement as “domestic terrorists.”

Sheriff Conway’s statement was a response to the recent incidents involving the shooting of police officers, which he and other law enforcement officials believe has been fueled by the BLM efforts to raise awareness of police violence. While the movement has never ordained a stance to injure police, it isn’t deterring people like Conway and Harris County, Texas Sheriff Ron Hickman from aiming their darts.

In a scathing 818-word statement, Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway declared that “all lives matter” and said those making allegations of racism against law enforcement officers are “hate groups” and “domestic terrorists with an agenda.”

“To say that I’m angry would be an understatement,” he wrote in the statement, sent Tuesday to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I’m angry that fringe groups who started the culture of police hatred have widened the racial divide in our country by alleging that officer involved shootings stem from racism.”

Conway’s law enforcement career began in 1973 with the Gwinnett County Police Department, and he was first elected to his current post in 1996. The silver-haired, tan-skinned sheriff generally maintains a low profile, but when he speaks publicly he tends to offer strong opinions on matters he considers important — everything from animal rescue to the controversial 287(g) immigration program.

Tuesday’s wide-ranging statement — which a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement called “one of the most ignorant, uninformed and inflammatory statements” he’d ever read — references the “firestorm that began” in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death last year in Ferguson, Mo. It says Darren Wilson, the officer who shot Brown, “became the poster child for alleged police racism and suffered damaging, irreversible life-long consequences” despite acting “within policy.”

Straight Outta HER MOUTH! Dee Barnes Gives First Full-Length Interview Since Dr. Dre Assault

Although it didn’t affect much in terms of Straight Outta Compton’s box office dominance for three consecutive weeks, Dr. Dre’s 1991 physical attack on journalist Dee Barnes was an underlying storyline through most of the media. The incident was noticeably absent from the film for reasons, as director F. Gary Gray claims, to not detract focus from the overall story of the N.W.A.

Barnes wrote extensively about her issues with the movie (which has since grossed more than $180 million worldwide) but up until now, hasn’t given a full-length interview on the matter. While speaking to Kevin Powell on the Huffington Post, she broke her silence once and for all and even offered up new revelations.

After reliving the scenes of the attack for viewers (“I mean it’s no secret… [Dre] grabbed me by my hair and started slamming me up against the wall. It’s a painful and traumatic experience”), Barnes revealed that she became a symbol of hope for young girls who told her she was the one they were learning from.

“I had young girls watching, [ages] 13 and 14 so I got emails from young girls saying ‘You were my first experience with domestic violence,’” Barnes recalled. “I was too busy trying to survive. It was vicious.”

Barnes also elaborated on her thoughts of being mentioned in Eminem’s 1999 song, “Guilty Conscience” and outlined her plans for the future, which included penning a memoir.

On August 27, through a statement with The New York Times, Dr. Dre apologized to all “the women he had hurt” in the past.

A new tribute fragrance to Aaliyah, Aaliyah by Xyrena, has been developed in close collaboration with the late singer’s mother and brother Diane and Rashad Haughton.

“It has been wonderful working with Xyrena to create an incredible fragrance that embodies the beauty, mystery, and creativity that my sister infused into every aspect of her life,” said Rashad.

According to a press release:

Did Lil Wayne DUMP Christina Milian?

Lil Wayne and Christina Milian have reportedly called it quits after a year of dating. According to Entertainment Tonight, a source confirmed to them that the couple split in late August.

TMZ adds that sources close to Wayne and Christina blamed their busy schedules for the break-up, and that neither’s pointing fingers.

They were first linked to one another in July of 2014, and Christina since dropped the song, “Rebel,” which she stated was inspired their relationship. She is currently signed to the Young Money roster.

Kenya Moore Slams Brandi Glanville During Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills Reunion; Calls Her “Scum!”

Kenya Moore may want to make amends with Phaedra Parks, but she has absolutely NO interest in mending her relationship with former Celebrity Apprentice c0-star Brandi Glanville! Their feud continues!

Kenya live-tweeted the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills reunion and had some not so nice comments about Brandi – and Kenya was not in the minority because most of Brandi’s RHOBH castmates didn’t have anything nice to say about her either!

Kenya’s ire towards Brandi started after Andy asked Brandi what it was like working with Krayonce on CA. Brandi, of course, didn’t try to make nice. Instead she called Kenya “crazy” and “evil” and Kenya unleashed her tirade on twitter! “LOL this woman is still talking about me #obsessedmuch #RHOBH” Kenya wrote.

Kenya then slammed Brandi – rightfully – for her comments regarding Yolanda Foster‘s daughter Bella.

“Yeeesss @LisaVanderpump speak on it #RHOBH,” Kenya added when Lisa took Brandi to task for her behavior.

Kenya wasn’t done – she then called Brandi “the scum of the earth”! Someone replaced Apollo Nida on Kenya’s pecking order.

Brandi didn’t respond to Kenya’s tirade against her, but I am sure Brandi will retaliate some how…

Well thankfully Kenya isn’t on RHOBH – she’s on Real Housewives Of Atlanta which means only minimal interaction with Brandi, but no less evil given her own co-stars.

Christina Milian Explains Rumored Engagement Ring From Lil Wayne

It’s been close to six months and Christina Milian still seems to be growing strong with rapper Lil Wayne. Whenever asked about the 32-year-old Young Money leader, the new reality star (her E! show Christina Milian Turned Up has landed a second season) is all smiles, literally.

During her recent interview with on Real 92.3 with Big Boy, Christina noted that it’s rare that people see her and Wayne out in public.

"You know how many pictures there are of me and Lil Wayne holding hands? There are actually a couple…I guess it’s been like a couple of months since anyone’s seen any pictures of us together. So I guess it’s a big deal. I mean we’ve had like a couple encounters that people have caught."

She admits that they purposely maintain a low profile and that her boo is a VERY private person.

"With Wayne, honestly he’s not a public kinda guy. He’s not a public figure. If you look at his Twitter, he tweets every now and then. He just started an Instagram. Like you really don’t see him out much. He really is like studio, skate park, eat …"

When asked about rumors that she’s rockin’ an engagement ring, she says:

"It was a sweet little gift. It was a nice gesture."

And when asked whether or not she loves Tunechi, she responds:

"I do, I do love him. He’s dope."

New Couple Alert? Houston Texans' J.J. Watt & Tennis Star Caroline Wozniacki?

Could NFL star J.J. Watt be dating tennis pro Caroline Wozniacki? The two were spotted sitting together at the NCAA championship game on Monday night in Indianapolis. Both of them were cheering hard for Wisconsin (who, unfortunately for them, ended up losing the game to Duke). J.J. played college football at Wisconsin while Caroline, who is from Denmark, doesn't really have any connection to the school. Maybe she was just there to support J.J.

J.J. has said previously that he doesn't have time for a girlfriend because he spends all his time and energy on football. In an interview with ESPN last year, he said, “I obviously would love to have a girlfriend but a girlfriend deserves so much of your time and energy. And she deserves to be treated like a princess because that’s how you should treat your girls. And if I can’t give them that time and that devotion because of my dedication to football, then I don’t feel like I should almost waste their time. If I find the right girl and she steals my heart then it might be a different story. It’s very difficult and I’m not overly optimistic about it, but I would love the opportunity.”

Maybe he finally found the one girl that he's willing to make time for.

Frank Ocean Announces New Album, Due Out in July

A new Frank Ocean album is officially on its way.

The singer took to Tumblr to share the above photo along with the caption

“I got two versions. I got two versions…”

He also included the hashtags #ISSUE 1 #ALBUM 3  #JULY2015 and #BOYSDONTCRYMAGAZINE.

His mother Katonya confirmed the good news, tweeting, “Yup. True :))”

It took him long enough! We can’t wait to hear what Frank has been cooking up!

Update:  A rep for Ocean confirmed to Billboard that the project is two things: A new album and his own publication. So far, there’s no title for either just yet.

Developing: Beyoncé, Kelly & Michelle to Reunite for a 10-Year Reunion Tour

Beyoncé, Kelly & Michelle are reportedly hitting the road for a 10-year reunion tour — but don’t call it a Destiny’s Child reunion!

According to Daily Mail,  the ladies won’t be able to tour under that name.

via VH1:Beyonce’s father and former manager, Matthew Knowles, owns a quarter of Destiny’s Child. None of the ladies, including Beyonce, wants anything to do with him. In order to tour and record an album without owing Knowles a dime, the group can’t use the name Destiny’s Child.

At the Stellar Gospel Awards, the ladies performed simply as themselves. Two years after their surprise 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance together, Beyonce and Kelly joined Michelle on stage for an unexpected choir-like opening to the show. The trio performed “Alpha & Omega” and “Say Yes” from Michelle’s Journey to Freedom album.

That could explain why Michelle Williams was so adamant about not calling their reunion at The Stellar Awards a ‘Destiny’s Child’ reunion.

Usher’s Ex-Wife, Tameka Raymond, Urges Her Twitter.com Followers to Learn the Koran

Tameka Raymond, the ex-wife of singer Usher Raymond, is urging her Twitter.com followers to learn the Koran in the aftermath of the al-Shabab massacre of 148 Christian students at a University in Kenya.

The Associated Press identified Somalia’s Islamic extremist group al-Shabab as the group behind the massacre at Garissa University College in Kenya on Thursday.

4 gunmen entered the University and began slaughtering students who either couldn’t answer or hesitated to answer the gunmen’s questions about the Koran. Christians were executed on the spot.

The 4 gunmen were killed by Kenyan forces who first put the bodies on display at a morgue, then paraded the bodies through town on Saturday to assure the people that they were dead.

HBO’s documentary film “Terror At the Mall,” which aired on CNN on Friday, featured interviews with some of the 175 survivors of Kenya’s Westgate Mall shootings in 2013.

In a tweet to her 157,000 Twitter followers, Tameka wrote, “Watching @CNN ‘Terror At the Mall” this is poignant & scary. I advise everyone to learn at least some of the Koran. That was the test? Yikes.”

As with the massacre of Christians at the Kenyan University, the victims of the mall shooting were asked to recite the Koran to test their knowledge of Islam and to determine if they were Muslim or Christians.

The FBI has said they are monitoring Islamic extremists who are affiliated with ISIS in every state in the U.S., including Georgia.

Jada Pinkett Smith Left ‘Gotham’ To Save Marriage To Will Smith?

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been married for a long, long time, especially by Hollywood’s standards. Whether it’s for that reason or because there really is trouble in paradise, the tabloids always seem to be fixating on the Will/Jada marriage in their weekly stories.

For example, the latest report from OK! Magazine claims that Jada Pinkett Smith left ‘Gotham’ to save her marriage to Will Smith. A ‘source’ tells OK!, “Jada enjoyed her time on the show, but she and Will have issues. She can’t afford to be on set right now.”

Apparently, these ‘issues’ and the ensuing divorce rumors all stem from the fact that Will got too close to his ‘Focus’ co-star, Margot Robbie. However, most of the tabloids seem to conveniently forget that Margot Robbie was dating someone else at the time, even though that doesn’t necessarily mean that nothing went on.

Either way, I can guarantee that neither Will Smith nor Jada Pinkett Smith are going to get divorced, especially not right now. Even if we put aside the fact that both of them are going to stick to the Scientology creed of marriage [never get divorced], there’s also the fact that they need each other right now. Will’s career has never been worse, and without the good family guy image that he often demonstrates in the media, it might not recover.

Granted, Jada leaving Gotham might have absolutely nothing to do with her marriage, but rather her desire to star in films and higher-caliber projects. Gotham is a high profile network show, but Jada wasn’t the lead of the show nor was she an integral part to the story. She is no doubt looking for more challenging and high-profile material, at least to showcase her particular talents.

San Francisco 49ers running back Reggie Bush and wife Lilit are expecting their second child.  While the couple (and their publicist) have kept quiet about the news, we noticed Lilit's baby bump on Instagram a few days ago.

Lilit and Reggie married in July 2014 in San Diego, Calif and are the proud parents of daughter Briseis, 22 months.

Congrats to the couple! We look forward to the official announcement!

Keyshia Cole Isn’t Going to Jail After All

Keyshia Cole gets to remain jail free after her lawyer successfully argued that a 10-year-old warrant shouldn’t land the singer behind bars.

via TMZ: It’s a bizarre story … back in 2002 Keyshia got a DUI. She was placed on probation and was required to attend an alcohol ed course. The court records do not show proof of completion so the judge issued a bench warrant.

But Holley told the judge Keyshia completed the program and her former lawyer just screwed up by failing to inform the court. Holley explained the alcohol ed program — which no longer has the old records — must have notified the DMV, because Keyshia has gotten 2 drivers licenses since then.

Holley persuaded the judge so the warrant was recalled and probation was terminated — yes, Keyshia was unwittingly on probation for the DUI for more than a dozen years.

As for how this all came up … TMZ broke the story Keyshia was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman in Birdman’s West L.A. condo last September. The arrest turned up the warrant. The assault matter was dropped, so Keyshia’s a free bird.

Good for her.

Mob Wives Big Ang has THROAT CANCER!!!

Last week Big Ang down played her lemon sized throat tumor on Facebook during her reveal, but now we’ve learned that Big Ang Nervous Over 7-Hour Throat Surgery.

Big Ang ran into a health scare last week, but she’s jumped on it like bees to honey to have the tumor removed. CelebNMusic247.com has the new details that Ang will have to undergo a seven-hour throat surgery to remove the cancerous tumor.

Beside Ang, Renee Graziano and Karen Gravano also announced the news on her social media accounts last week.

We’ve also learned, after discovering the presence of the tumor, which is sitting on top of her voice box, she has learned that it is in fact cancerous and she is undergoing a lengthy surgery to remove the mass,  according to Radar Online.

Detore explained to the news site: “The tumor is cancerous: It’s throat cancer.”

“It’s on top of the voice box. They didn’t give her a stage. I think when she gets the surgery to remove it, they’ll probably have all the answers by then.”

Ang took to her Facebook to update fans on the condition earlier this week, where she tried to remain optimistic despite the scary diagnosis.

Ang wrote: “This coming week I will be taking proper precautions and having it removed.”

“I do want to say that you have all been on my mind every step of the way and I am so thankful to each and every one of you for the love, support, prayers and most of all positive wishes. Big Ang isn’t going anywhere!”

Ang took to Facebook to clarify the situation to her fans.

Meanwhile, Ang’s sister also reveals that  is saying the star is a little bit nervous going under the knife.

“Who wouldn’t get nervous about having a seven-hour surgery?” Janine said of Ang’s attitude prior to the operation. “It’s a long time so of course she’s nervous. She’s got a lot of nieces and nephews that are worried, her grandchildren, her daughter, her son, her husband, her other siblings … we’re all nervous, of course.”

As far as what the doctors are planning on doing, the family is still in the dark as to whether Ang will receive chemo or radiation following the lengthy procedure.

“You don’t know what they are going to do: whether they are going to have chemo or radiation or nothing,” the star’s sister explained. “She doesn’t know yet.”

In Political Theater: Rand Paul: 'I AM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT'

Sen. Rand Paul launched his 2016 presidential campaign Tuesday with a combative challenge both to Washington and his fellow Republicans, cataloguing a lengthy list of what ails America and pledging to "take our country back."

Paul's fiery message, delivered in his home state of Kentucky before he flew to four early-nominating states, was designed to broaden his appeal outside of the typical GOP coalition as well as motivate supporters of his father's two unsuccessful bids for the Republican presidential nomination.

In a 26-minute speech that eviscerated "the Washington machine," he spared neither Republican nor Democrat as he attempted to tap into Americans' deep frustrations with their government.

"I worry that the opportunity and hope are slipping away for our sons and daughters," the tea party favorite said. "As I watch our once-great economy collapse under mounting spending and debt, I think, `What kind of America will our grandchildren see?'"

He added: "It seems to me that both parties and the entire political system are to blame."

By criticizing fellow Republicans, Paul showed he was ready to run a tough-talking campaign equally at ease criticizing both major parties.

"Big government and debt doubled under a Republican administration," Paul said in a swipe at former President George W. Bush, whose brother, Jeb, is expected to be a Paul rival for the GOP nomination.

He immediately followed up: "And it's now tripling under Barack Obama's watch."

In what well might have been a jab at Jeb Bush and other rivals considered more mainstream, he added: "If we nominate a candidate who is simply Democrat Lite, what's the point?"

At a splashy kickoff rally, Paul promised a government restrained by the Constitution and beholden no more to special interests.

"I have a message, a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words: We have come to take our country back," he told cheering supporters.

Paul is a fierce critic of Washington, where he is in his first term as a senator but often not in line with his party's leadership. A banner over the stage in Louisville proclaimed: "Defeat the Washington machine. Unleash the American dream."

Paul was clearly most passionate about upending the way Washington works.

"I propose we do something extraordinary," he said. "Let's just spend what comes in."

Cheers erupted when he decried government searches of phones and computer records as a threat to civil liberties. Most Republicans defend the practice as a necessary defense against terrorism.

"I say the phone records of law-abiding citizens are none of their damn business," Paul said of government officials.

Tom Stewart, a 58-year-old resident of London, Kentucky, joined Paul's rally and counted himself a backer.

"I like that he wants less government," Stewart said. "Less spending. Less intrusion. Maybe less intrusion into everybody's rights around the world."

Paul's challenge now is to convince other Republican voters that his is a vision worthy of the GOP presidential nomination, a prize twice denied his father, former Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. The elder Paul joined his son at Tuesday's announcement and got a raucous cheer when he was introduced.

Paul begins the 2016 race as the second fully declared candidate, behind Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. They could face as many as 20 rivals before the lead-off Iowa caucuses in February.

Paul is a frequent contrarian against his party's orthodoxy, questioning the size of the U.S. military and proposing relaxation of some drug laws that imprison offenders at a high cost to taxpayers. He also challenges the GOP's support for surveillance programs, drone policies and sanctions on Iran and Cuba.

But as the presidential campaign has come closer, Paul has shifted his approach somewhat on the question of how much government the country actually needs.

He recently proposed a 16 percent increase in the Pentagon's budget, a switch from his earlier call for military and troop cuts.

Tech savvy and youth focused, Paul is expected to be an Internet pacesetter whom his competitors will have to chase.

Paul's digital advisers, for example, kept track of who asked questions in a Facebook exchange after the speech, harvesting data to reach prospective voters.

It's unclear how much support Paul can muster in the Republican mainstream.

In one sign of his uphill climb, an outside group not connected to any candidate planned to spend more than $1 million on ads criticizing Paul's positions on Iran sanctions. And Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz continued the pile-on, telling reporters, "Rand Paul's policies are way outside the mainstream."

Paul is leaving open the door to a second term in the Senate. With the backing of his state's senior senator, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, he is likely to seek the White House and the Senate seat at the same time.

McConnell, who backs Paul's presidential bid, appeared Tuesday at a business event in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

"I think we take it one step at a time," McConnell said. "I'm confident if Rand is running for the Senate, he'll be re-elected."

One of Paul's likely rivals, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, is expected to announce next week that he will skip a Senate re-election bid in 2016 in favor of putting everything into a presidential campaign.
