The Daily Buzz For June 25 ☕📰☕

Variety Magazine presents The Power of Pride Issue!
Jim Parsons, Hannah Gadsby, Billy Eichner, Don Lemon, Asia Kate Dillon and MJ Rodriguez are on the cover of Variety‘s inaugural ‘Power of Pride’ issue, out on Wednesday (June 19).

Here’s what the stars had to say…
Jim Parsons, on coming out: “Once it was out in the public, I was like, ‘Well, f–k you! If you still have a problem with gay people, you directly have a problem with me. Being a full-fledged member of it and claiming it, there was just an elation there, and there still is! I still feel it. It’s a huge relief, and it’s also really nice to sometimes be able to feel righteous anger.”

Billy Eichner, on growing up gay and 2020 Presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg: “I was a child in New York at the height of the AIDS epidemic. I was a gay kid way before Ellen and Will & Grace. Pete is doing for the political world what people like Ryan Murphy have done in my industry for LGBT people, which is to create a space where a space did not exist.”
MJ Rodriguez, on coming out as trans to her agent and the fear of being dropped: “I remember calling my agency and saying, ‘Listen, you guys, I don’t know if you’re going to drop me or whatever the case may be, but I just need to let you guys know that I’m a female. That’s how I feel, and that’s how I’ve always been feeling ever since I was a child. They just welcomed me with open arms and said, ‘We don’t care. We love you, and we already pretty much knew.’ And I was like, ‘OK, good.’”

Icon Janet Jackson Opens Up About Michael Jackson’s Legacy, Her Childhood With Joe Jackson and More to The Sunday Times of London!
In a rare interview with The Sunday Times of London, pop icon Janet Jackson shared what it was like growing up as a Jackson and the future of her brother Michael’s legacy.
Months after the debut of HBO’s “Leaving Neverland” documentary, which detailed the child molestation allegations against Michael Jackson, little sister Janet says she believes his legacy will live on. “It will continue,” she said. “I love it when I see kids emulating him, when adults still listen to his music. It just lets you know the impact that my family has had on the world. I hope I’m not sounding arrogant in any way – I’m just stating what is. It’s really all God’s doing, and I’m just thankful for that.”

Janet talked about being involved with charitable work her brother would do as a teen within their community, like feeding homeless people bbq dinners. She also discussed the downside of being a kid in the Jackson household. “You really miss out,” she said. “You don’t get to do all the fun things that kids do. I wanted to do gymnastics, but that couldn’t happen because I was busy working. But at least I had my brothers and sisters. They were my best friends.”
There was even a time when Janet told her father Joe that she wanted to step away from music and go to school to study business law: “My father told me no. …He felt that God had a different path for me,” she said.
Janet revealed that she felt as though she “did say everything” to her father that she needed to before he passed away almost a year ago, adding that her own son, 2½ -year-old Eissa, will be free to choose his own path. “I was thankful for the time that I did have with him, with Eissa, the three of us together,” she said. “Being together with my father in the end.”

The pop icon shared that therapy has helped her get through tough times, following her divorce from ex Wissam Al Mana In 2017. “It’s never going to be an easy ride, but we’re going to get through this,” she said. I’ve done a lot in my life, and it’s about having fun, continuing to have fun. There are still things that I do want to do in life, but if I don’t get to do those things, then I’m good. I have a son, and he’s beautiful. He’s my light.”

Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman will be in August Wilson’s Adaptation 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'
Netflix is behind the movie, which will be produced by Denzel Washington.
Netflix is heading into production on a screen adaptation of August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
Viola Davis, who earned a Tony and later an Oscar for her performance in Wilson's Fences, will star in the feature, along with Chadwick Boseman. Emmy winner Glynn Turman, Tony and Olivier nominee Colman Domingo and Michael Potts round out the cast.

The story follows Ma Rainey, a famed blues singer, as she makes a record in a studio in 1920s Chicago, where tensions boil over between her, her white agent and producer and the bandmates.
George C. Wolfe — the Tony-winning director whose screen credits include the Oprah Winfrey-starring The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks — will helm the movie, which is set to begin shooting next month in Pittsburgh.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who earned a Tony for his performance in Wilson's Seven Guitars, will adapt the play for the screen.

Denzel Washington, who directed and starred in the 2016 big-screen adaptation of Fences, will produce the movie, along with Todd Black and Dany Wolf. Constanza Romero, who is Wilson's widow, will executive produce.

Family Matters 'Revival': Jaleel White to Reprise Steve Urkel Role on Scooby-Doo
It’s been 21 years since Jaleel White slipped on Steve Urkel’s signature suspenders. This week, he’ll revive the iconic Family Matters character, by way of Hanna-Barbera.
White is set to reprise his career-defining role in an episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, premiering Thursday, June 27 on the Boomerang streaming service. White offered up a first-look photo on social media, which reveals the animated rendering of the Winslows’ next-door neighbor, as well as one of his many inventions, Urkelbot.

“Walked in that booth after 20 years and voiced him like it was nuthin,” White wrote on Instagram. “To be on screen with Scoob and Shaggy solving a mystery is #Bucketlist stuff 🙏🏽 Enjoy!”
White’s Scooby-Doo cameo is as close as we’ve come to a Family Matters revival. Back in 2017, White and Darius McCrary teased fans with a reunion photo. Prior to that, Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Payton co-starred in the 2015 Lifetime original movie The Flight Before Christmas. For now, nostalgics will have to settle for all 215 episodes of the 1989-1998 sitcom currently streaming on Hulu.

In addition to White, the first season of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? will feature guest appearances by Ricky Gervais, Wanda Sykes, Sia and Chris Paul. The regular voice cast includes Frank Weller (as Fred and Scooby), Grey Griffin (as Daphne), Kate Micucci (as Velma) and Matthew Lillard (as Shaggy).

Supreme Court rules clothing brand that sounds like F-word can be trademarked
The Supreme Court ruled a clothing line brand that sounds like the F-word can be trademarked. The Supreme Court defended the Constitutional right to freedom of speech in its 6-3 opinion which was released on Monday.
The case was brought by Erik Brunetti, who founded the streetwear/skate clothing line FUCT in Los Angeles in 1990. He was previously denied a trademark due to the vulgar sounding name.

The justices struck down federal rules regarding trademarks that are "immoral" or "scandalous" as unconstitutional.
"The First Amendment does not allow the government to penalize views just because many people, whether rightly or wrongly, see them as offensive," Associate Justice Elena Kagan said from the bench in announcing the decision.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor were the dissenting votes.

Justices Roberts, Breyer and Sotomayor agreed that the ban on "immoral" and "scandalous” trademarks should stand.
"Refusing registration to obscene, vulgar or profane marks does not offend the First Amendment," Roberts said. "The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech; it does not require the government to give aid and comfort to those using obscene, vulgar and profane modes of expression."

Sotomayor said the court's ruling ensures "the government will have no statutory basis to refuse (and thus no choice but to begin) registering marks containing the most vulgar, profane or obscene words and images imaginable.

LL Cool J Says He Couldn't Get a Chapstick Deal Because of His 'Black Lips'
The ladies may love cool James, but apparently sponsors didn't like LL Cool J's facial features and the star is still chapped about it years later.
LL Cool J was in Midtown NYC on Monday when he was asked if his famous smackers have ever been approached for a chapstick deal.
His answer was classic, telling the photographer, "No, they hated my black lips back then."

It's unclear if the rap-actor was referring to a specific situation or simply theorizing, but his luscious lips are definitely worthy of an endorsement nowadays.

The "NCIS: LA" star was also asked if he had plans to get back into the music game, to which he replied, "yeah, I'm gonna do another album."

Cam Newton's $1,500 offer to switch seats on plane denied by fellow passenger
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was turned down by a fellow passenger when he offered to pay him $1,500 to switch seats on a flight from Paris to the U.S. on June 21, according to a witness who said he saw it all happen.
Twitter user Elisara Edwards, who posted a video of the exchange, said the 6-foot-5-inch quarterback wanted some extra leg room for the 10-hour flight.

In the video, Newton can be seen talking to a passenger in a seat with no one to the front.
The passenger shook his head to a surprised Newton, who smiled and went back to his seat.

Newton, known for his sense of style especially during post-game appearances, was in Paris for Men's Fashion Week.

‘The Chi’ Creator Lena Waithe Under Fire for Calling Out Hollywood Veterans for Apparently Not Doing Enough for the Culture
Lena Waithe has had it with Black Hollywood megastars after she has alleged they have not done enough to help up-and-coming Black creators.
The creator of Showtime’s “The Chi” made the remarks while speaking to The New York Times and directly called out Denzel Washington and Will Smith in the process.
“Don’t get me started on black financiers!” Waithe told the newspaper. “How many of those do we have? I’m not [going to name] names because I know better, but there are some very big black movie stars out there, and they could pay for two or three or even five small independent movies to get made by black directors and black writers.”

The star did, in fact, wind up naming names as she credited the Brad Pitt-co-founded Plan B for doing more to advance the work of Black storytellers than Black actors have.
“Let me give you two movies that are very important to the black community: ‘Moonlight’ and ’12 Years a Slave.’ Whose production company put those out?” she asked. Plan B was responsible for both Oscar-winning efforts.

“Wasn’t Denzel. Wasn’t Will Smith,” Waithe continued. “You won’t catch me making $20 million a movie and not paying for at least four or five independent movies a year. I do give credit to Ava [DuVernay] for trying to build something that hasn’t been built before, but that’s a lot on Ava’s back.”

Waithe’s remarks have drawn the ire of Twitter users who had no issues letting their feeling show.
“So Lena Waithe is calling out Denzel Washington and Will Smith for not financing enough “Black projects and talent?” #CAREERSUICIDE Wow. Blackballed or nah? Also, her neutral stance on Tiffany Boone’s situation on HER set… has changed my attitude towards her… FOREVER. ✌🏾”
“I can’t believe Lena Waithe had the audacity to say that Denzel Washington doesn’t support black talent in the same capacity that Brad Pitt does lol. It’s disrespectful bc Denzel has worked with & supported so much young black talent. Y even lie on him lol.”

“Lena Waithe taking shots at Will Smith and Denzil Washington might cause a stir short term but long term, criticizing these two actors in public is not a smart move.”
Still, there are examples of Smith and Washington lending their hands to help rising Black stars.
In one of her first major starring roles, Quvenzhané Wallis landed the title role in the 2014 remake of “Annie,” produced by Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. That same company is behind an upcoming documentary centering on the Flint water crisis written and directed by 29-year-old Malcolm M. Mays.

As for Washington, “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman explained the legendary actor paid for him to study at Oxford. He also gave Fordham University $250,000 for a scholarship fund in 2011, something theater students have been thankful for.

Cardi B and Offset drop $100K on jewelry for 1-year-old baby Kulture
Cardi B and Offset want their daughter dripping in diamonds. Ahead of baby Kulture Kiara Cephus’ first birthday on July 10, the 26-year-old “Bodak Yellow” rapper and 27-year-old Migos member commissioned a pricey piece of custom bling: a diamond pendant and chain featuring colorful enamel characters from the Netflix series “Word Party.”

The piece was designed by celebrity jeweler Eliantte, who’s created gems for Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Future and Lil Wayne, in addition to Cardi and all three Migos members.

The approximate cost for Kulture’s new jewels? A cool $100,000, according to TMZ.
Just last month, Cardi B shelled out another $80,000 on more jewelry for her daughter, including nine diamond tennis bracelets and a pair of matching stud earrings from Pristine Jewelers. “If I’m iced out my daughter gotta be too,” she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post showing off Kulture’s new sparkle.

The Daily Buzz For May 29 ☕📰☕

Pamela Anderson for Vogue Czechoslovakia - June 2019
Pamela Anderson is officially a Vogue cover girl. The former Playboy pin-up, 51, just made her debut on a very different type of magazine, starring on three covers for Vogue Czechoslovakia’s June issue.

The “Baywatch” star strikes some dramatic seaside poses for the triptych covers photographed by Dan Beleiu in Cassis, France, posing in Chanel, Saint Laurent, Versace and Savage x Fenty alongside the phrase “Who wants to kill Pamela Anderson?”

“Miracles happen,” the publication wrote on its Instagram account alongside one of the images, explaining that the shoot was inspired by the 1966 cult Czech film “Who Wants to Kill Jessie?” starring Anderson look-alike Olga Schoberova.
In the interview that accompanies the shoot, the longtime animal rights activist says, “Every girl wants to feel sexy. I think of myself as a socialist feminist. I love men. I don’t like authority,” adding, “Be careful who you share your weaknesses with. Some people can’t wait for the opportunity to use them against you.”

#RHOA: Eva Marcille Just Debuted a New Hairstyle
The Real Housewives of Atlanta model Eva Marcille showed off a brand-new hairstyle, and it's the definition of different.
With the soon-to-be mom of three's due date for her third child quickly approaching, the Georgia Peach took self-care to the next level by trading in her short hair for a fresh braided and twisted 'do, which she artfully piled on top of her head.

In another shot of her hairstyle, she wrote, "You do you, and imma do me." Clearly, Eva doesn't care what anyone has to say about her bold new look — she loves it, and that's all that matters.
LOL! What do you think?

#Empire: After canceing ‘Star’ Lee Daniels Has a New Project Announcement
It’s just been announced that Lee Daniels has developed a new TV pilot, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about “Star,” the Fox series that was recently canceled after three seasons.

Daniel’s potential new show is called “Good People,” which he wrote with actress and comedian Whitney Cummings, who will also be in the pilot. The Amazon project will star Lisa Kudrow from the ’90s sitcom “Friends” as well.
The premise of the pilot surrounds three women from different generations who work in the ombusdman’s office and deal with shifting more as the times change. There will also be a focus on how race, gender, sex, class and feminism are affected by the changing times.

Cummings and Daniels will also be executive producers of “Good People,” and Daniels will direct the pilot episode.
In fact, he shared news of the pilot Monday on Instagram but also brought up “Star,” as if he anticipated a lot of questions about it.

“The comeBack comes to me!!!!,” wrote Daniels. “So excited to have #lisakudrow aboard #goodpeople … Oh and I have not forgotten about #star.”

This prompted fans to respond.
“okay because we ain’t letting it go 😂❤️.”
“Yyyeess congratulations and thanks for not forgetting about star. “
“Okay well hurry up with star updates … thanks. “
And he doubled down on that promise after someone wrote, “Soooooo, can we have star back or nah.”
“Yes,” the director responded.
A lot of fans expressed utter sadness when news of “Star” being canceled came on May 10, and the following day Daniels mentioned how hurt the cast and crew were.
“To our die hard @staronfox fans please know this was not of my doing. Our cast and crew are 💔,” he wrote.

Plus, it was revealed that Daniels flew the “Star” cast to Los Angeles for a skating party after the show was canceled. He also paid for their flights and hotels out of his pocket, according to Page Six.
“Cross fingers that you see us again, and if you don’t you’ll see us in your dreams,” he said in a clip that showed the party. Queen Latifah, who was also on the show, is in the video as well.
For now, Daniels hasn’t given any other updates on “Good People” or what his exact plans for “Star” will be.

The Fox drama followed the story of three young women trying to make it in the often ruthless, always competitive music industry.

#NewMusic from Eric Benet – ‘Can’t Stop’
It’s always exciting when you get new music from Eric Benet, especially when it’s unexpected. The new song is called “Can’t Stop” and from what we can tell it’s a previously unreleased song from much earlier in his career.

The cover art for the single shows that this is from the “Warner Archives”, with Warner being the label that Benet was a part of for his first few albums until 2004. The sound of the album does indeed match up to a late 90’s early 00’s vibe so it could easily be a leftover from his second album “A Day in the Life” or the previously unreleased “Better and Better”.

LISTEN HERE

Can’t Stop” is a pretty good listen. Eric Benet never lets us down!

#HipHopNews: Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Igor’ Album Debuts At No. 1, Has Biggest First Week Of Career

Crazed Man kills two in Japan stabbing that injures 16 schoolgirls, police say
TOKYO (Reuters) - A schoolgirl and an adult man were killed and 16 other young girls injured in a stabbing at a bus stop outside Tokyo on Tuesday, Japanese national broadcaster NHK cited authorities as saying, and another man detained at the scene also later died.
The girls, aged between 6 ands 12, were students at a private Catholic school in Kawasaki city, south of Tokyo, and were boarding their school bus when the suspect attacked them, according to NHK.

The driver of the Caritas Elementary School bus told police he saw a man approach the bus stop and start slashing at people, holding a knife in both hands, the broadcaster said.
Police said an 11-year-old girl and a 39-year-old man were killed. NHK said the man was likely the father of one of the children, while another woman was severely injured along with the 16 other schoolgirls who were hurt.

A suspect was detained at the scene after stabbing himself in the neck but died later, NHK cited police as saying. It said the man, a Kawasaki resident probably in his 50s, was unconscious when he was detained.
The motive for the attack was not yet clear but there were no immediate fears of a wider security threat. There have been previous examples of mass stabbings in Japan, sometimes involving the vulnerable.
In an apparently unrelated incident, a police officer shot a man who approached him with a knife in his hand in a town north of Tokyo, Kyodo news agency reported. The man was taken to hospital but no other details were available.

The attack occurred on the final day of U.S. President Donald Trump's four-day state visit to Japan.
"On behalf of the First Lady and myself, I want to take a moment to send our prayers and sympathy to the victims of the stabbing attack this morning," Trump said as he toured Japan's largest warship, the Kaga.

"All Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and for their families," he said.

'FRIGHTENED AND SHOCKED'
TV footage showed scores of police officers and emergency vehicles at the crime scene, with large areas cordoned off.
A witness told NHK he saw people lying on the ground covered in blood and one police officer was seen hosing down the sidewalk.
"I saw a boy carrying a school bag with scratches on his face, wrist and legs in a parking lot," NHK quoted an unidentified witness as saying.

"He was visibly trembling - frightened and shocked."
The girls' school is located just over a kilometre from the scene of the attack, NHK said.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described the attack as "extremely harrowing" and promised to step up efforts to secure the safety of children commuting to and from school.
Two children were killed and a dozen injured in western Japan earlier this month after a car involved in an accident with another vehicle skidded into a nursery school group out for a walk with their teachers.

Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan but occasional high-profile incidents have shocked the nation.
A knife-wielding man broke into a facility for the disabled in a small town near Tokyo in 2016 and killed 19 patients in their sleep. In 2001, eight children were stabbed to death by a former janitor at their school in Osaka.
More than a dozen people were injured in a 2010 stabbing spree on a school bus and a commuter bus in a Tokyo suburb.

Serena Williams Makes a Statement with Empowering Attire for Her Return to the French Open
Serena Williams arrived at the 2019 French Open making another fashion statement, a year after wearing the black catsuit that was banned from the tennis court.
Upon arrival to the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, the mother of one sported a jacket that read the words “Champion,” “Queen,” “Goddess,” and “Mother” in French.

For her match against Russian opponent Vitalia Diatchenko, Williams, 37, wore a matching two-piece ensemble from a Nike collaboration with designer Virgil Abloh.
The tennis pro gave a sneak peek of the look on Sunday, posting a series of black-and-white photos to her Instagram.
“Let the Roland Garros begin. Here is my French Open look designed by @virgilabloh and @nike,” she captioned the photos, which highlighted the crop top, skirt, and jacket.
Last year, the 23-time Grand Slam winner turned heads in an Abloh-designed all-black catsuit that she said made her feel like a “queen from Wakanda.”

“I feel like a warrior in it,” the tennis champ told reporters last May. Not only was the outfit a fashion statement, but a benefit to Williams’ health.
“I’ve had a lot of problems with my blood clots, God I don’t know how many I’ve had in the past 12 months,” she said last year after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia the prior September. “I’ve been wearing pants, in general, a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going.”
However, the French Tennis Federation did not approve of Williams’ French Open outfit last year, and in August chose to introduce a new dress code.
“I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far,” said French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli to the Associated Press at the time. “It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place.”
Williams responded to the ban as gracefully as a queen.
“I feel like if and when, or if they know that some things are for health reasons, then there’s no way that they wouldn’t be okay with it,” she told reporters later that August. “So I think it’s fine. The president of the French Federation, he’s been really amazing. He’s been so easy to talk to. My whole team is basically French, so, yeah, we have a wonderful relationship.”

The ban hasn’t stopped Williams from slaying the fashion scene — or the tennis court.

Meek Mill Was Allegedly Denied Entry to the Cosmopolitan Hotel Because of a Previous Fight with Security?
Meek Mill and his lawyer claim the rapper was denied entry to the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas over the weekend because of racism, but sources connected to the hotel say it was actually because of a previous fight with security.
TMZ broke the story … Meek rolled up to the hotel Saturday and was ordered to stay in his car and drive away … or else he’d be arrested.

Meek’s celebrity lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told TMZ, Meek is part of a long list of African-American rappers who were blacklisted from certain Vegas hotels. Tacopina has threatened the hotel with a lawsuit unless it apologizes, and STAT.
Cosmopolitan officially had nothing to say about the incident and did not issue an apology, but the Cosmo source says there was a prior incident where Meek was at the hotel and “fought with security guards.” The source claims Meek became persona non grata for that reason.

Tacopina told TMZ, “We have learned that the Cosmopolitan maintains a list of African American recording artists who should be denied access for no other reason than their culture and skin color.”
Meek’s lawyer issued a follow-up statement to counter the Cosmo source’s claims.

“The racist hole that they [Cosmopolitan] have dug for themselves has just gotten deeper. Yesterday, when this incident unfolded, the chief security guard could not articulate a reason why Meek was denied entry and threatened with arrest. They’ve now come up with some fabricated claim through an anonymous source that Meek was involved in a fight on their property. Meek Mill was never involved in a fight on their property, ever and I challenge the Cosmopolitan to produce a video of such altercation or a contemporaneous incident report. The legal case against the Cosmopolitan just got stronger.”

We’ll see how this plays out…

Wendy Williams, son Kevin Jr. attend snack expo in Chicago after his arrest
Wendy Williams and her son Kevin Hunter, Jr. flew to Chicago, Ill. to attend the Sweets & Snacks Expo on Wednesday.
A rep for the convention confirmed to Page Six on Thursday that Kevin Jr. was with his mom at the event, just hours after he was released from jail for allegedly punching his father, Kevin Hunter.

The rep tells Page Six Kevin Jr. did not participate in any events and was solely a guest of his mom's, as she was there representing the brand Candy Pop - which was a sponsor of the soon-to-be-dissolved Hunter Foundation.
As Page Six reported, Kevin Jr. was arrested after his father put him in a headlock in a store parking lot in West Orange, New Jersey. A source told Page Six he spent less than an hour behind bars before being released from custody.

Kelly Clarkson almost takes a tumble in $2K dress
Kelly Clarkson had a bit of a misstep on Sunday. The pop star, 37, attended the Indianapolis 500 over the weekend where she performed the national anthem. But as she was making her way to the stage, the “Stronger” singer almost took a serious tumble after tripping over something obscured by the event’s red carpet.
The “American Idol” alum had a great sense of humor about the moment, however, retweeting the video of her trip and writing, “Best part of my day is always revealing to people that might not know how utterly not cool I am. That damn crack was hidden by the carpet man!”

It didn’t help that Clarkson was wearing a long, flowing, star-spangled Temperley London wrap dress ($1,948) and some seriously high platform sandals.

Thankfully, she quickly regained her composure, mouthing “I’m OK” to the crowd and giving a quick curtsy, before knocking her performance out of the park.
